Welcome from MTU President Be part of change. Be bold. Choose to pursue a postgraduate degree at Ireland’s newest Technological University. At MTU we aim to lead change and, through education, empower people for a successful future in a globalised world. MTU is a multi-campus technological university, contributing to the region through the provision of academic programmes that support student development and opportunities, education, and research. This past year has been full of challenges, disruption, and upheaval but it has also brought opportunity for collaboration, creativity and thinking-outside-the-box. The need for, and the value of, postgraduate education and research has never been more relevant. One example of how the value of research in the working world has proven itself to be invaluable recently is through the accelerated creation and development of the COVID-19 vaccine in the battle against this pandemic. Across MTU we have embraced remote teaching and learning platforms to ensure continuity of education for our students. As we face into the 2021/2022 academic year, we can assure you that we will continue to make the most relevant, high quality and profession-focused courses available to our postgraduate students. We will deliver our courses in a manner in line with Public Health guidelines, always putting the MTU student at the centre of our delivery and do hope that we can meet in MTU campuses again soon. We hope you can join us on what will be an interesting postgraduate journey over 2021/2022. Professor Maggie Cusack President of Munster Technological University

CURRENT PHD STUDENT After working my first Artificial Intelligence (AI) job for around 5 months in India, I started my postgrad journey with MTU first before enrolling into PhD and I couldn’t be more grateful. The lecturers at MTU not only helped me perfect my concepts that I learned during my last job but also guided me about the host of options available to excel as an AI professional. Although the technologies are fairly new to the world, I loved the maturity while growing through the curriculum as I developed the confidence to present my papers to international research journals including the IEEE. The teaching methodology is far from rote learning and is a perfect blend of classroom and hands-on learning to enable students to think critically and build highly efficient algorithms. The faculty is highly approachable and the members were always available during my postgrad journey, which is why I enrolled in the PhD programme with Edge Intelligence as my research subject. I had a fantastic time on the campus, made some great friends for life, along with a constant connection with my faculty family. I would highly recommend the Masters and PhD programme for all students looking forward to building a strong base in the world of AI and Machine Learning.

Dr Sharon Butler RECENT PHD GRADUATE

My experience at MTU has been thoroughly enjoyable, so much in fact that I’ve completed both my BSc and PhD degrees there and I am now a full-time staff member. My BSc was in Applied Physics and Instrumentation in the Physical Sciences department which has an array of lab facilities. During the course, all my lecturers were always engaging and attentive to any of my needs. I then had the opportunity to undertake a PhD in CAPPA based in the CREATE building on the MTU Cork Campus. I was extremely fortunate to work alongside many experts in that field and gained so much knowledge from my colleagues and especially from my supervisors. CAPPA has state-of-the-art photonics research facilities, and those along with the exceptional people that work there provided me with the resources to complete my PhD research project which was a highly rewarding learning experience. Having completed my PhD, I am now a postdoctoral researcher in CAPPA and I also provide assistant lecturing in the Department of Physical Sciences. MTU will always be a special place for me both in a professional and personal aspect and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Cian O’Regan

CURRENT PHD STUDENT Despite starting my PhD in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and not being able to study on-site at MTU, I’m extremely grateful to everyone at MTU for making the first few months of my research as smooth and stress-free as possible. For someone new to the world of research, the Research Skills Development and Data Analysis modules were very beneficial in enabling me to fully grasp the high standards, expectations, and support for researchers at MTU. Despite not being able to interact with my fellow postgrad students and supervisors in person, I still feel part of an exciting research community thanks to the fantastic support and communication from the School of Graduate Studies. It’s great to know that if you have a worry or query about something, they’ll be there to help you and answer any questions you may have. MTU Postgraduate Study and Research in Cork 2021

What does a student who has taken this route say? Karrie Marie McCarthy CURRENT PHD STUDENT

I graduated from the Department of Biological Sciences in 2019 with a BSc. (Hons) in Nutrition and Health Science. Upon graduating, I secured employment in the food industry, where I spent 1 year, before returning to academia in 2020 when I was awarded a Rísam PhD Scholarship in the Department of Sport, Leisure & Childhood Studies (SLCS). I was delighted to get this opportunity to return to MTU and further my education in Nutrition & Health, as I feel this has brought me a step closer to the future career I have always wanted. The support and encouragement from not only my supervisory team, but also the other postgraduates in the Department, has made the transition back to academia effortless. So many opportunities have arisen since I commenced my postgraduate studies, including the opportunity to get involved with teaching undergraduate classes, which I thoroughly enjoy. These opportunities have helped me to grow and develop on both a personal and professional level, and I feel privileged to both work and study in this department. Research is a journey that is not always linear, but one that is already so rewarding.

Aimee Plante

CURRENT PHD STUDENT Following the positive experience of my undergraduate degree (Nutrition and Health Science, 2016) I realised I wanted to pursue a postgraduate research qualification. In 2016, I was successfully awarded a Rísam PhD Scholarship which allowed me to carry out research on how nutrition contributes to healthy ageing. Although challenging, my PhD experience within MTU has provided me with many opportunities including collaborations with food industry, travel, publications and lecturing experience. As part of my structured PhD programme, I have completed modules designed to support the development of my research and transferrable skills. The postgraduate community is a great area to work, filled with enthusiastic and dedicated researchers who I now consider great friends. This degree also provides students with an insight into different career paths including academia, research and industry. The staff within MTU are extremely dedicated to their students and have supported me throughout my years to strive and achieve my research goals. I would highly recommend this postgraduate research programme in MTU to those wishing to further their career in science.

What does a student who has taken this route say? Dr Susan Golding RECENT PHD GRADUATE

I was awarded my PhD from MTU for my research on identifying and investigating potential disease-modifying therapies for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. One of the highlights of my doctoral studies was the opportunity to teach the undergraduate labs in the Biological Sciences department. I really enjoyed teaching as it allowed me to improve my communication and presentation skills and hopefully help to prepare the researchers of tomorrow. My advice to postgraduate students starting out would be to really question what your project is about, why you’re doing it and what you hope to achieve from it. It sounds simple, but it is really effective to know what your goals are when undertaking any research project. My second piece of advice would be to stick with it, some days are better than others, you may encounter difficulties or a change in direction, but when you can finally put your hardbound thesis up on the shelf, it will all have been worth it.

Averil Kiely

CURRENT PHD STUDENT Unlike the majority of my classmates, by the final year of my Biomedical Science degree, I simply did not see a future for myself as a practicing Medical Scientist. I was intrigued by how we can drastically improve patient healthcare by understanding how our cells work and decided to look into postgraduate research opportunities and applied for a Rísam PhD scholarship, which I was awarded in 2017. I am now engaged in research that is focused on the DNA damage response (DDR) system and my work involves trying to understand how cells recognise damage to DNA and how they initiate and activate the DNA repair processes. Understanding the DDR system can help develop future cancer therapeutics. The project involves collaboration with researchers in MTU, UCC, and GMIT allowing me to gain experience in multiple laboratory facilities. Over the last 4 years I have also been granted the opportunity to demonstrate practical classes, aid in the Exams Office, and lecture which have all been thoroughly enjoyable while expanding my skillset for future employment.

My time in MTU as a postgrad was fantastic. The staff are so friendly and approachable and the facilities on campus are second to none. It’s just an amazing environment to be in. I completed my PhD in the Department of Sport, Leisure and Childhood Studies. The lecturers and other postgrads became not just supervisors, lecturing staff and colleagues, but great friends that I’m sure I’ll stay in contact with. During my PhD, I was lucky enough to get some great experience lecturing and leading practical sessions on a variety of different modules. I also had the opportunity to present my research at a number of different conferences, including an international conference in Essen, Germany. I also played camogie with MTU and made friends with some fantastic people who are extremely passionate, dedicated and great at what they do. The MTU GAA club was more like a family than a sports club and it was great to play with and be part of the club. I highly recommend MTU, my time there was amazing with very fond memories.

The first eye-catching feature of studying at MTU for me as an international PhD student was lecturers’ and staffs’ hospitality and kindness which I think is something necessary for someone who has just left his country. Pursuing my PhD at MTU was absolutely a turning point in my academic life. I am interested in the Nearly Zero Energy Building field of study where the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to overcome the global warming crisis in the future. MTU provided laboratory facilities in the MTU Energy Lab to set up a test chamber for testing natural ventilation regimes, which is something exceptional; in addition, working with and learning from the energy experts in MeSSO Research Group is a great opportunity for me to gain some necessary skills in this field. Hopefully, all the hard work in this group will lead us to be an active player in net-zero greenhouse gas emission world by 2050.

In 2015, as an Irish American Partnership Scholar, I successfully completed a Masters Degree in Business, eventually leading to my RÍSAM scholarship PhD (2017-2021) study, called “Smart Ageing and Renewal through Entrepreneurial Skills Training”. This study explored potential alignments between healthy ageing and older entrepreneurial capacity. Throughout my experience there was great support from the School of Graduate Studies, guiding us students through the PhD process, reminding us when reports were due, answering our questions, and pointing us toward appropriate study modules. It is a really friendly campus and welcomed me back to study as a mature student.

Dr Holly Barry

RECENT PHD GRADUATE Completing my PhD studies in MTU was one of the best decisions I have made. Throughout the 4 years I spent in this programme in the Department of Marketing & International Business, I was incredibly supported and encouraged by not only my supervisors, but also the academic staff and the Graduate Studies team. MTU invests not only in your research, but your personal development through the availability of library facilities, regular workshops and teaching hours. During this time, I was also afforded the opportunity to submit papers and present at academic conferences, including the Academy of Management in Queens University, Belfast, the Collaborative European Research Conference in the University of Stuttgart, Germany and the Academy of Marketing in Queens University, London. Post PhD, so many doors have opened for me in both my academic and industry career. I have secured a senior role in my place of employment and have signed a book deal with SAGE Publications, co-authoring an academic book with my supervisors on my topic of research, experiential marketing. I have no doubt that without my time in MTU, these are opportunities that I would not have been afforded. If you are thinking of enrolling in postgraduate research programmes in MTU, do it. This is a decision that you will not regret!

I chose to undertake my PhD as professionally it was the next step for me having completed two Masters, one by research in 2008 and a Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2014. Engaging in a PhD has enabled me to expand my knowledge within the area in which I work and hopefully to contribute to the development of the area for the future. I work in MTU in the Extended Campus in the area of Recognition of Prior Learning and Work-based learning. These areas broaden the participation in education by those in the workplace and with prior learning. The support I have received from my supervisors has encouraged me to stick with it and in my abilities as a practitioner-researcher. In addition to the encouragement of my supervisors, the opportunity to be a member of the MTU Enterprise Engagement and Experiential Learning Research Group (E3LRG) has enabled me to share my research in the space and collaborate with colleagues and researchers. Undertaking a PhD is demanding on top of a job and other commitments but I see it as a worthwhile investment in myself.

Dr Wendy Oke

RECENT PHD GRADUATE MTU was my first choice because I wanted access to industry experts who could guide me in excelling to new professional heights. My doctoral research revolved around quality and compliance in early childhood education and care. I was constantly encouraged by my PhD supervisors to apply my research findings to real-world problems. It was this type of thinking that paved the way for the development of the award-winning, TeachKloud, which is used by thousands of parents and preschool teachers. During my time at MTU, I was also given numerous opportunities to lecture on a diverse range of modules, published multiple peer-reviewed research papers and presented in national and international conferences.

Dr Aidan Harney RECENT PHD GRADUATE

Completing my PhD part-time at MTU was an extremely positive experience. I was fortunate to have not one, but two, terrific supervisors. Their enthusiasm for my research question generated great vitality. Their flexibility in terms of availability and mobility was of immense assistance to me, given the nature of my senior role in Intel at the time. The rigor they applied to the process throughout was very welcome. The MTU online library is a rich research utility and I found all of the support staff to be most helpful. All in all, the process was demanding and challenging but very worthwhile in terms of expanding my capability to engage in research and generate new knowledge. I would like to extend thanks to the great team at MTU.

What does a student who has taken this route say? Joseph Keating RECENT MA GRADUATE

After consulting with the teaching staff at MTU Crawford College of Art & Design of the benefits of various postgrad courses offered to fine art graduates, I decided the research MA was the course best suited to my practice. For a research based practice, the course allows an autonomy on the selected subject and examination of a variety of areas of academic and practical interest related to the specific research subject. It provided a framework to develop a variety of artistic skills and knowledge of research methods and in art-related fields. These are learned skills which I will carry through in all aspects of my future practice. As the course is self-driven, there were no constraints on the intensity of time spent on specific areas of the research. My research was based in ‘Thirdspace, Art Practice and Palestinian Refugee Camps’ and I was supported by the University through their academic network while on research trips throughout the Middle East. I found the academic and studio tutorial consultations invaluable for their imparted knowledge, experience, support and direction at all times, and particularly in times of stalemate. There was no research area of the subject I suggested that was not met with practical and constructive criticism that was ultimately beneficial for both the academic and studio work.

A perfect balance of space and support. I had a clear idea of my research subject and, from the start, was given the space to explore this area. At the same time, I was provided with an array of college supports: ranging from access to the well-stocked library, to workshops in academic and technical skills and most importantly, two insightful tutors who shared many hours of encouragement, guidance and advice.”

Overview

Delivery

This programme is geared at providing non-business graduates with the skills required to develop and promote products and services in an international environment while furthering their business skills and knowledge. Students build upon their own discipline (science, engineering, computing etc.) to develop solid understanding of Business Development, Internationalisation and Innovation in an interesting educational environment. Students will expand their business knowledge and skills through simulation, guest speakers, and an international trip. Students will also undertake an industry consultancy project which will prepare them for opportunities in the workplace. The programme is an excellent opportunity for students who want to complement their degree with business skills, broadening their skillset in a way that adds value to an organisation.

Programme Highlights

The International Business Field Trip is an opportunity for immersion in non-Irish culture which serves to enhance and deepen the learning experience for students involved. The trip focuses on the skills required to develop business opportunities in new markets. The Seminar Series module allows students the opportunity to draw upon their learning throughout the programme and to synthesise that in the context of some direct exposure to industry leaders. The Applied Business Consultancy Project is a capstone module which brings together the learning from the programme which is applied to a business-set project.

Overview

Placement

Enquiries

The MA in Global Business Practice emphasises the development of skills relating to International Business with a capstone international placement. The programme is aimed at those with existing business degrees and develops knowledge and insight relating to areas that are of particular importance for businesses operating globally. Skills and knowledge developed relate to operations management, supply chain and logistics, procurement as well as broader themes like strategy and innovation which also underpin success in global business. The programme has three strands, geared at developing a graduate that will be ready to gain employment in roles where international business skills and knowledge can be put to immediate and practical usage.

Traditional Platform

This focuses on the global environment putting specific focus on contemporary issues in the international landscape. Modules in areas including Global Competitive Strategies, Financial Interpretation, Business Relationship Development, International Business Negotiation, Innovation Management & Creativity and Operations Strategy will be through a delivery mode that emphasises traditional delivery albeit through interesting pedagogical approaches.

Accelerated and Intensive Platform

During January, February and March learners will have the opportunity to undertake specifically tailored modules that will be delivered in either intensive or accelerated modes.

The final stage of the programme will provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through placement in an international business or a business with a strong business orientation. This will be of significant duration and will be targeted at overseas partners though suitable placements may also be approved within Ireland.

Admissions Requirements

This programme is geared at business students. As students will emanate from various business areas the following entry criteria normally need to be met: • A H2.2 (or equivalent) in an Honours Degree in a business area • A Personal Statement must be provided by the applicant • An interview may be held with candidates • An IELTS of 6.5 (or equivalent) will be requested of students where deemed appropriate by the HOD

Career Opportunities

It is envisaged that graduates will play significant roles in the various aspects of the export orientation of Irish and multinational businesses. There is an articulated demand within Irish businesses for graduates who understand what it means to be truly global, who have the skills and knowledge required to play an active part in an ever more competitive business environment. We expect that graduates of this programme would be suited to graduate programmes of large multinationals and that beyond this the graduates would be ready for roles (within large and small companies) including indigenous Irish companies.

Overview

Information Developers are individuals who bridge the gap between subject matter experts and that of the end user. The role of information developers is becoming increasingly important given that society is being driven by technology and information developers provide the voice in communicating how issues incorporating technology are framed and developed. The Society of Technical Communication (STC) define information developers or technical communicators as individuals that communicate using an instruction based focus on technical or specialised topics using technology. In essence, information development and technical communications ensures that designs, products, systems and methodologies are documented and conveyed to their target audience to maximise its business value to the organisation. Simply put - if it is not worth documenting, it is not worth anything. Over the past number of years, the manner by which information developers perform their role has been impacted by technological advancements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and modern day practitioners need skills from not just Humanities but also Computing and Business domains. The programme seeks to provide a modern day practitioner with the opportunity for in depth study of the advanced rhetorical, compositional theories, project management, and technical skills necessary for them to be leaders in designing, composing, managing, and editing content using a standardised methodological approach using XML based technologies such as DITA.

also concerned with the significant elements of the software system from the code’s structure and design to the deployment of that code to the live environment. At this layer, a software architect will focus on security, reliability, authentication, performance etc. Across these pillars, software architects make architectural decisions that shape a system and design decisions to ensure his/her vision is realised.

This programme is designed for software professionals, architects, and senior system design engineers. Managers of architecture teams will also benefit from this programme. The programme aims to form part of the evolutionary path that a software developer takes in becoming a software architect, enabling each student to advance their technical career path. Students will learn about a software architect’s role in creating extensible and maintainable software solutions by applying abstract knowledge and patterns to software architecture and design. The traditional role of a software architect is critically assessed in the face of agile development methodologies and the adoption of tools, and practices that avoid or decouple Up Front systems from architectural design. The programme is taught by industry and academic experts who are either practicing software architects, senior technical architects or active researchers in the field of software development. Software architecture spans a number of pillars which include the application, system, software and enterprise. Application architecture represents the fundamental building blocks of software, and at this layer, an architect needs to make decisions about the programming language, the constructs, libraries and frameworks that to be used in developing software. An application rarely lives in isolation, and typically a system is composed of multiple collaborating applications. At this system-level, software architects focus on issues such as reliability, interoperability and integration. Software architecture is

The programme will provide students with the principles and concepts involved in analysing and designing large software systems. The programme was developed with significant input from the software development industry’s leading experts. The programme is focused on developing a holistic view, seeing the bigger picture to understand how a software system works as a whole. This approach helps to differentiate software development and software architecture, and it also helps to know how somebody progresses from software development to a software architecture role. The programme places significant emphasis on student learning by doing. It adopts a practical, handson, approach to learning, where all modules are fully assessed using continuous assessment methods. There are no formal end of semester written examinations and this ensures that you will learn by doing from the first module to the last.

In all cases, final admission to the course will be on the basis of interview.

E-learning as a field of study, as an approach to teaching and learning and as an industry has evolved considerably over the last decade and a half. Governments and policy makers have made e-learning a central imperative of their political educational rhetoric and provide substantial funding initiatives to support its development and mainstreaming. Related policies and requirements with regard to lifelong learning, the knowledge-based economy, work-based learning and globalisation combine with the benefits of e-learning as a delivery and support tool to make e-learning one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the worldwide education and training and digital media industries.

Programme Aim and Orientation In the above context the programme seeks to produce developers of cutting edge, educationally effective e-learning solutions. Our graduates, subsequently, will go on to work as designers and developers either directly as part of the burgeoning e-learning sector or in support of in-house e-learning and learning technology departments which are becoming mainstream in a number of other areas and industries. The programme is a Master of Arts and, as such, reflects a special orientation towards, variously, creativity, culture and design, rather than technology per se.

Delivery

The programme is delivered entirely online using many of the same e-learning tools and technologies which also form the course curriculum. All registered students are also, uniquely, given access to a virtualised desktop which provides all their multimedia software and remote storage requirements for the duration of the course. This means the programme may appeal to those who, for whatever reasons, cannot commit to attending regular face-to face lectures and labs or who simply find the flexibility and convenience of studying at a distance attractive.

5.6 Graduate profiles at a glance

MA in Marketing Practice CLAIRE O’DONOGHUE

“The MSc in Marketing Practice helped me gain new insights into the marketing profession. For me, one of the key differentiators of this course is the practical aspect which sees students developing marketing plans for real life companies. This partnered with the high level of interaction between students and lecturers meant I was truly able to advance my skills in marketing. The placement aspect allowed me to apply everything that I learnt during the classes to actual business situations. After completing my placement, I was lucky enough to be kept on in the organisation and am now an Assistant Brand Manager for SuperValu in Musgrave. I am delighted to have chosen this course and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing a career in marketing.”

MSc in International Business AISLING DOWLING

“Feeling like my career had stagnated, I returned to education to complete the Masters in International Business. A challenging but enjoyable year. The workload was demanding but the approach was accessible for the wide range of students from different backgrounds in the class. The topics covered were diverse while also complementing each other and there is a lot to be said for the friendly and welcoming culture in the college. The benefit of the Masters for me was it broadened my horizons as I got opportunities in roles and companies that I don’t think I would have otherwise. Returning to education showed I was willing to change, learn and adapt. But most of all I found, when looking for a job, speaking with recruiters and in interviews I had developed the ability to see the bigger picture a lot better. I have a much more rounded view of businesses, how they work, what they need and what I could potentially add. The ability to competently discuss the many things I learned in the Masters – sustainability, marketing, human resources, finance – into conversation in an interview setting, I believe, helped me to stand out that bit more. My career path since the Masters included time in a Business Development role with a software startup, a few years with a global food company and my most recent stop is with AnaBio Technologies Ltd as Quality Assurance Director.”

MA in Global Business Practice EVA HORGAN

“The MA in Global Business Practice opened the door for me into the world of procurement. Modules such as International Business Negotiations, Business Relationship Management and Purchasing and Logistics are used daily in my current role as a Procurement Consultant for Ireland’s largest Grocery Distributor, Musgrave Group. My internship began as a 6-month placement and almost 2 years later I am delighted to be still working with the same company and going from strength to strength. Working with local Cork organisations on live projects, attending site visits, and the International Field Trip, are elements of the Masters which I really benefited from. I would 100% recommend the MA in Global Business Practice to anyone looking to explore a career in Purchasing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations or looking to obtain a Global Business Masters.”

MSc in Digital Marketing Strategy JEN BRYAN 94

“Completing the MSc in Digital Marketing Strategy was key for my career growth. It provided me with the theoretical knowledge and framework for growing my career in the digital marketing space. Completing the programme part-time and online allowed me to continue working full-time, while also furthering my knowledge in the digital marketing space. Since completing the programme, I have moved from working full time in a digital agency to starting my own business, jdigital.ie. The modules in the course allowed me think strategically around all areas of digital marketing. Everything from branding, to data assessment to strategy implementation has undoubtedly helped me in my career path and now my own business growth. The lecturers all provided deep insight into their areas of expertise which led to a phenomenal learning experience. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to further their learning and professional development in the digital marketing space.”

MA in Human Resource Management PAUL KENT

“Employed in a Technical Learning & Development role within PepsiCo, I support the Capability building process for our associates worldwide. Working with a worldwide audience and building capability by doing more than training, I needed a programme that would give me both a theoretical and practical comprehension of how we can continue to develop people. As well as developing the right people, we need to understand how we attract, recruit and retain these people. With limited exposure to the HR environment, this programme gave me the opportunity to build on the knowledge that I had and grow this for the benefit of my organisation. The content initially attracted me to the programme but I have also got great exposure to newer areas and it has been a great source of personal development. The programme provides a broad learning base for students across many aspects including Employment Law, Business and even some Psychology. Human Resources is becoming a strategic element in the modern business environment and people with this skillset can offer a competitive advantage. CIPD accreditation was also very important for me. I would highly recommend the MA HRM. It is not a programme designed solely for the HR professional; I believe that anyone with a role to play in the strategic development of the people within their organisation will benefit greatly from this programme. There is a strong blend of academic learning and practical knowledge ensuring that skills are practiced immediately and it is this application that makes the course challenging and interesting but ultimately effective and rewarding.”

MTU/UCC Architecture students Kieran Cremin and Eoghan Horgan’s project “Entangled City” was awarded a European Architectural Medal in Architecture (Prize for Innovation) in December 2015. “This prize is a fitting and well-deserved acknowledgement of our student talent and their incredible work ethic; all of which, well hidden behind modest exteriors” (Jason O’Shaughnessy, Master of Architecture Course Director). MA in E-Learning Design and Development SARAH MCGOWAN

96

“The MA in E-Learning Design and Development had the perfect structure for me as someone working full-time. While it did involve a lot of dedication, it was flexible enough that I could coordinate my time around daily work and family commitments. The lecturers were fantastic and supportive throughout, and they provided me with all the additional support I needed! The topics covered gave a great insight into the different areas of E-Learning and Learning & Development in different industries, and even helped me to pursue new career opportunities within this field. I am now a Learning and Development manager within Ireland’s fastest growing startup, eShopWorld.”

MA in Public Relations with New Media GILLIAN LYONS

“The course contained a good mix of PR, digital marketing as well as content writing - something not many courses offer despite the massive growth in the digital sector. The course provided me with vital skills and knowledge to kick start my career in Digital Marketing. I have worked on exciting projects including social campaigns, e-learning courses, animations, and overseeing new website builds for well known clients such as Club Orange, Fáilte Ireland, and the GAA. The lecturers were fantastic and I could not recommend the MA in PR with New Media course highly enough!”

MA in Digital Marketing Strategy JANINE GALVIN

“I took this course because it is so on point. Everything is digital, it’s the now and future of marketing. The instructors and visiting lecturers are unbelievable; they are enthusiastic, energetic and knowledgeable with up to date knowledge of the industry and the latest trends. They provided me with the tools and techniques to work on the next brands. It’s an opportunity to learn about brand strategy, design and development of ecommerce sites, search engine marketing, and digital marketing analytics… and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made.”

MA in Art & Process PÁDRAIG SPILLANE

“I chose this programme to bring more attention and stimulus to my photography and image-making practice. At that stage, I needed the concentrated emphasis and structure of working within this taught MA programme, especially with the input of tutors plus a diverse and active peer group. It was the most exciting and formative year with both the freedom to experiment and the structure to explore my areas of specialty. The most important influence from the MA was trusting myself and becoming self-directed in my work and research. The MA, with its studio and learning environment, was a place I could trust and become practiced in what art and its possibilities are for social and other involvements. It assisted me in how I made the context of my work bigger. It also built up my visibility, creating connections for my work as an artist and a curator. I now teach at MTU CCAD and work with students to progress their ideas in conceptual and material ways. This has fed into my curatorial practice of showing artworks to different audiences.”

MA in Art Therapy

97

MICHAEL O’TOOLE

Since graduating in 2017, Michael has worked in addiction clinics in Ireland and abroad, and for the Education Training Board, where he works with refugee groups and disadvantaged families. Michael continues his work as an Art Therapist in the midlands and has plans to work abroad again supporting families in disadvantaged areas. “The Art Therapy course at MTU CCAD was an amazing experience. The course prepares you with a wealth of knowledge, from guest lectures to your own personal tutor and group supervisions. With the support from your tutors, well delivered lectures and workshops, the course works in theory and in practice, and is well rounded for all types of thinkers. In this course you will gain the experience, knowledge and work ethics that will establish your own professional career.”

Professional Master of Education (Art & Design)

JEANIENNE MCCARTHY

Jeanienne has worked as a teacher since graduating in 2016. Although she found the course demanding, she comments “it enabled me to recognise my own strengths and I developed a confidence and determination that I have taken with me. My tutors were positive role models offering advice, support and encouragement and I hope that this is something I emulate in my own professional practice. The PME teaching practice equipped me with the skills and knowledge I needed to confidently begin my career in education. As a teacher of art, craft and design my aim is to provide pupils with opportunities to grow as autonomous, creative, motivated and happy individuals who aspire to fulfil their potential. I feel privileged to work in an area which is fulfilling and meaningful to me and which also allows me to draw upon my own creativity.
