AVLS Fellows Give Back! By Dr. Marlin Schul
Over the past several years, the American Vein & Lymphatic Society (AVLS) has transformed its mission and vision to become the leading Society in the United States, advancing venous and lymphatic disease research with the PRO Venous Registry. To continue this vision, the Fellow Members of the AVLS have come together to develop a new research grant targeting young or new researchers in the field.
THE AREAS OF EMPHASIS FOR RESEARCH THAT THE GRANT WILL BE LOOKING TO SUPPORT • The science of compression therapy for chronic venous insufficiency, • Pathophysiology and/or Treatment of venous ulceration, • Diagnosis and Management of Superficial Disease. This new AVLS Fellows Grant will provide the scientific and financial resources to the recipient and, more importantly, provide a mentoring opportunity where a Fellow or Fellows will be available to advise and support throughout the execution of the research project. A Fellow Member of the AVLS is a member that has clearly demonstrated a level of experience and expertise in venous and lymphatic medicine who has also shown a commitment to advancing the Society and the field in general. Our Fellows are excited by the opportunity to support future researchers and leaders! The grant process will be somewhat unique from other grants that the AVLS has historically overseen. Three finalists will be selected from among the applicants and will be provided the opportunity to present their research proposals to the AVLS Fellows at the Annual Congress. The Fellows in attendance at the awards dinner will then select the recipient of the grant who will be announced during the Congress awards session, and their Fellow mentor(s) will be appointed. The winner will then have a year to complete their research, where they will then be required to present their results at the next AVLS Annual Congress. In addition to the support of a Fellow mentor, they will receive a $10,000 cash award, access to the PRO Venous Registry and data/analytical support from the Anyon Institute of Artificial Intelligence. Each finalist will receive a complimentary registration to the Annual Congress, two nights lodging at the Congress hotel and a travel stipend of $750. Currently, the AVLS Fellows are seeking a sponsoring organization interested in investing in the future of venous and lymphatic medicine. Applications for the AVLS Fellows grant will be accepted in the Spring of 2022, with the finalists being invited to the 36th AVLS Annual Congress to be held in New Orleans on October 13-16, 2022.
