ARMY FAMILY COVENANT / BLUE STAR CARD / KMC

The Blue Star Card is a FMWR deployment discount and activity card for Spouses of deployed Soldiers. The card offers everyday discounts at FMWR facilities, free childcare options and access to special events and activities. Blue Star Cards are available and valid throughout the duration of deployment. If you are eligible* for a Blue Star Card, bring a copy of your Soldier’s deployment orders, along with your military ID to either the Schofield Barracks or Tripler Medical Center Army Community Service (ACS) locations. Make sure to submit your email address when signing up for your Blue Star Card so you can be emailed with the latest discounts, events, and activities for card holders. * To be eligible, Spouses of Army combat deployed Active Duty/Reserve/National Guard Soldiers/DA Civilian employees must be stationed in Hawaii. The Soldier must be deployed for at least six months, and receive hazardous duty pay. Spouses of Soldiers deployed for less than six months may also qualify. These programs are open to pre-school age children, 3-5 years old. Young Readers Book Club Elementary age children are invited to participate in a book discussion group at SGT Yano Library. The book club meets on Thursdays at 5:30 pm on Nov. 5 & 19 and Dec. 10. “Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren will be discussed Nov. 5, “The Chocolate Touch” by Patrick Skane Catling is the topic on Nov. 19, and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” by Judi Barrett will be discussed Dec. 10. Wishing Tree When a loved one is deployed, we are full of wishes: that he’ll be safe, that she’ll be home soon, that the children will adjust to the separation. SGT Yano Library has created a wishing tree to offer a concrete reminder of the person who is away and provide a place to collect wishes, hopes and prayers. Everyone interested is welcome to make a wish on a paper leaf or heart, which will be displayed on the tree.

Afterschool @ SGT Yano Library Elementary age children are invited to enjoy Native American Tales and a craft activity on Wed, Nov. 25, 3 -3:45pm and “The Polar Express” on Dec. 16, 3:00-3:45pm. This is a FREE program and no registration is required. Share Your Reading Adventures @ SGT Yano Library Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to tell us what they liked about a book they read. Our Hero Tree @ Hawaii Army Libraries The “Our Heroes’ Tree” is a national initiative founded to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by the families of current service members, veterans and deceased service members. During the month of November, Hawaii Army Libraries will display a tree featuring ornaments of our community’s heroes in each library. Ornament templates will be provided for you to add a picture of your hero or you can create your own handmade ornament. Stories about the individual service member can also be submitted and will be displayed in a binder near the tree.

Beginning Jan 1, 2010 all beginning level classes will be on a monthly basis, with no contracts. Classes that will no longer require semester contracts will be all beginning dance classes to include 2 year old Rhythm and Motion, New Beginnings in January, Beginning Guitar, Keyboard or Drum classes, 3-5 year old & 6-8 year old Theater Classes, and Beginning Hula classes. New students in these classes may begin to enroll Dec 15, 2009, at any CYSS Registration Office, Child Development Center or School Age Services Center. First Come, First Served policy. Spaces in classes are limited in size for safety and learning quality of students. All enrollments with payment must be completed by the last day of December 2009 for January 2010 classes. Parents will be able to enroll for future months during the month prior to the class beginning. Classes begin the first week of each month; payments may not be taken after the 1st of the month. Parents or older students must show their teacher their monthly receipt the first week of class to be admitted into class. For intermediate or above level Dance, RockSchool, Hula and Theatre (Performing Arts Classes) classes will continue to be on a monthly billing system to ensure students in these levels are able to stay with the same classmates for the competition of routine, song, or play and in preparing for performances and/or demonstrations. Parents with children in this level of instruction will no longer be required to sign semester contracts and will be able to remove their student from billing with a 2 week notice to SKIES. Removal from billing forms will be available at the SKIES office; forms must be turned in to SKIES no later than the 15th of the month prior to the student leaving to ensure they are removed from monthly class billings.
