Army Community Service COMPONENTS OF EFMP By: Alexandra White The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) ensures that Family members with special medical and educational needs will have the necessary services available to them at their gaining installation. EFMP also aims to provide a continuum of care to Soldiers and their Family members as they transition. There are two main components of EFMP: EFMP Medical and Army Community Service (ACS) EFMP. EFMP Medical is located at TAMC in the Oceanside building. EFMP Medical completes the screening process for Command Sponsorship. All Soldiers with assignment orders outside of the continental U.S., who elect to request dependent travel, must have Family members medically and educationally screened and, if required, enrolled into EFMP. Enrollment in EFMP is mandatory if a Soldier has dependents with special medical or educational needs. This process should be initiated within 30 days of receipt of assignment orders. EFMP Medical is the starting point for enrollment into EFMP, as their office processes all medical administrative documents. The community support portion of EFMP is located at the ACS building on Schofield Barracks. ACS EFMP helps Families to navigate through the various systems of care that are available to them, connect Families to local resources, and provides support within the Special Education system. To learn more about ACS EFMP, please call us at (808)-655-4227 or stop by our office at 2091 Kolekole Avenue Schofield Barracks, HI 96857.

Dear Tina, How do I potty-train my strong willed female child? What are some good techniques? Signed, Concerned New Mom Dear Concerned New Mom, Potty-training is one of those intimidating undertakings for new parents, but the fact that you’ve already conquered diaper changes and teething should give you some confidence. There are a few things to keep in mind as you enter into this new stage.

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks.

According to the Mayo Clinic (www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle), “Potty-training success hinges on physical and emotional readiness, not a specific age. Many kids show interest in potty-training by age 2, but others might not be ready until age 2 1/2 or even older — and there’s no rush. If you start pottytraining too early, it might take longer to train your child.” Thus, the first thing you will want to consider is whether your daughter is demonstrating signs of readiness for potty-training, (i.e. does her diaper stay dry for a couple hours at a time? Does she recognize that her diaper is wet or that it is about to be?). The second thing to keep in mind is that it will take practice. It’s a little bit like when you learned to drive a car, what seems difficult at first will take practice until it becomes second nature for your toddler. Accidents are a normal part of learning, so it is important to keep the process positive; it is not the time for punishment. In fact, since children naturally want their parents to be proud of them, rewards and encouragement are far more effective. Also, wanting to exert independence is one of the hallmarks of the toddler stage - which is why “no” becomes a favorite word. Try not to engage in a power struggle with your daughter. Instead of telling her to use the toilet or even asking if she wants to, try giving her a choice like, “would you like to try using the potty-chair in the bathroom or in front of the television?” This way you are giving her the power to make a decision, while limiting the options to two “yes” choices. Please feel free to give us a call here at the New Parent Support Program, at 655-4ACS, for more in-depth information and assistance. Best wishes, Tina
