The Holiday Season is a time for celebrating, eating too much food, and spending time with your loved ones. However, it only takes one hurtful comment like, “that is not how Mom made the green beans,” to throw Families into a tailspin. Regardless if you have been on island one month or three years, there are many ways Families can plan ahead to avoid stressful Holiday experiences and enjoy their time together. HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO REDUCE HOLIDAY STRESS: 1) SET A BUDGET - Holidays are an easy time to overspend. Make a conscious effort to sit down with your partner and establish spending guidelines and a Holiday budget before you start purchasing gifts for your friends and Family. 2) EXPECTATION MANAGEMENT - Your holiday dinner doesn’t have to be “Martha Stewart caliber.” Have a few simple recipes that you have tried before and won’t cause a great deal of stress to make. Ten years from now, your Family won’t remember that your gravy was too thin or that your Turkey was a little dry. When all else fails, you can go to one of the many on-post dining facilities for a Holiday meal! In the Holiday classic “A Christmas Story”, a Christmas dinner at the local Asian restaurant turned out to be a big hit.

FINANCIAL READINESS

Million Dollar Soldier Refresher Training This training provides Soldiers with valuable financial tools. Topics include: saving, credit, investing and big purchases. Dec 2, 9, 16, 23 • 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Money Management This class focuses on the core concepts of personal finances. Learn how budgeting, credit and investing fit in to your overall financial plan and take away the “Steps to Financial Success.” Dec 3 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Budgeting for the Holidays This class will help you prepare financially for the holidays. Giving valuable money-saving tips for the holiday spending planned for this year, as well as introducing ideas of budgeting and savings throughout the year. Dec 10 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Your Credit Report & Score No credit or bad credit, this class will help you increase your credit score and understand how lenders see you. Bring one copy of your credit report from: annualcreditreport.com Dec 17 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

3) CLEARLY STATE YOUR NEEDS AND WANTS - If you don’t feel you can support a house full of visitors, or that in-law that makes you frantic, be up front about it. Be honest with your partner and children about your plans and goals for the Holiday to reduce stress and anxiety during this busy season. No one wants lingering resentments to sour the season. 4) TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF - It is easy to get, “wrapped up,” in making the Holiday memorable for everyone around you. If you’re anxious and frustrated, you won’t be able to truly enjoy the season. Talk with your partner and children about fun things you can do for one another and for yourselves. The advice that flight attendants give each of us on a plane, “put your oxygen mask on before you assist loved ones with their oxygen mask,” is equally relevant when recognizing how important it is to take care of ourselves so that we have something to give to everyone else. 5) ENJOY MAKING NEW TRADITIONS WITH YOUR FAMILY - One of the marvelous things about being a part of a military Family is that everywhere you go, you have a chance to create an experience worth remembering. If you’re stationed in Germany, you might frequent a Weihnachtsmarkt during the Holiday Season. Now that you’re in Hawaii, try adding an island flare to your Family traditions. Add a touch of paradise to your holiday tree or meal and enjoy the beautiful weather on Oahu while your friends back home are warming their feet after a day in the snow. If you need help with ways to cope with the Stress of the Holiday Season, or support around the issues of Holiday spending and stress, Army Community Service (ACS) can help. ACS offers stress classes, financial counseling, couples communication classes and more! Call 808-655-4227 for more information or to sign up for classes today!

MILITARY CHILD SPOTLIGHT

Daniel Mejias

Fort Shafter Youth Center Fort Shafter Youth Center shines its December spotlight on Daniel Mejias. Daniel is a freshman at Moanalua High School. With his outgoing personality and amazing sense of humor he has managed to befriend every teen at our center. Daniel is never afraid to crack a smile or enter a friendly competition. One of Daniel’s most admirable traits is his sense of competitiveness which is why he enjoys sports and gaming so much. At Fort Shafter he is able to put this skill into play by challenging his peers in match of basketball or Mario carts. Outside of the center he enjoys spending time outdoors and even earned the nickname “spider monkey” from his peers. Daniel is also an intellect who enjoys his time at school. His favorite subject is Social Studies because he says it helps him discover more about himself and believes we need to learn from our past in order to progress. Congratulations Daniel Mejias!
