Whether you are experiencing good or bad stress, it can affect a person emotionally, mentally, physically, and behaviorally. There are various signs and symptoms, that when identified, help individuals understand where they are on the continuum of stress. It is important to be aware of the type of stress you’re going through, so that you can find the best way to deal with stress and prevent burnout. Here are three positive ways to cope with stress: 1. Change your thought patterns and reframe your perceptions from negative to positive: “Nothing is going right and I cannot deal with what happened last week,”to“Today is a new day and I have the opportunity to make better choices than I did yesterday.” Remember that you can only change things that are within your control, starting with your response to outside circumstances. You cannot control the cost of living or the traffic in Hawaii, but you can control your thoughts, attitude, and response to it. 2. Positive support network: It is important to have people and resources that you can reach out to during a time of need. Don’t be afraid to seek help, as seeking help is a sign of health and strength. 3. Self-care: Everyone needs time to rest and recuperate. Enjoy a day at the spa, a nap, or a date night with your partner. Exercising, eating healthy, and practicing relaxation techniques while limiting alcohol intake and internet based activities can promote optimal performance.

Basics of Budgeting Sick of living paycheck to paycheck? This class will help you develop a budget, track expenses, and create a system to save and pay your bills on time. Please bring a copy of your LES (available at https://mypay.dfas.mil) and a list of bills. Aug 13 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

One of our Stress Solutions class attendees shared her story about how her quality of life improved by implementing these coping strategies. She used to think, “Life will not get any better than this.” She reframed her perspective to, “This is only temporary and I can overcome this one day at a time.” She did not believe in asking for help and felt she could handle everything on her own. After taking the Stress Solutions class, she built relationships with other community members who she can now reach out to for support. She learned the importance of taking care of herself first, in order to take care of others.

Your Credit Report & Score No credit or bad credit, this class will help you increase your credit score and understand how lenders see you. Bring one copy of your credit report from: annualcreditreport.com Aug 20 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Basic Investing & TSP Learn the basics of the Thrift Savings Plan and other investment options including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. www.tsp.gov. Aug 27 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii has 6 Child and Youth Services Child Development Centers (CDC). All Army Child and Youth Services Child Development Centers must be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC promotes high-quality learning by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. Their vision is that all children thrive and learn in a society dedicated to ensuring they reach their full potential. Each CDC must undergo an accreditation renewal process every 5 years. The facility prepares and receives a site visit by an NAEYC Assessor who determines if the program meets the Early Learning Program Standards. The NAEYC Accreditation demonstrates both a commitment to quality and ensuring that standards are being maintained. USAG Hawaii, Child and Youth Services is proud of our two programs who just recently completed their renewal site visits. Bowen CDC achieved their new 5-year term of accreditation by the NAEYC on February 7, 2019. Fort Shafter CDC achieved their new 5-year term of accreditation by the NAEYC on March 26, 2019. Our Child Development Centers strive to ensure that the health, safety, and welfare of the children in their facilities is being met at all times. This allows the soldier/parent the peace of mind to carry out their mission. Many of our staff feel this is not a job, but a vocation, and when they see the happy faces of parents and children, day in and day out, that is the greatest reward they can receive.
