ANGER AND CONFLICT / STRESS/ COMMUNICATION Anger & Conflict Solutions
Prevention program for individuals to learn the basics of anger awareness. The class will help participants identify their own personal anger cues and ways to de-escalate conflict situations. October 4, 18 • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Stress Solutions

DEMYSTIFYING THE IEP PROCESS
| By Alexandra White has special needs. In order to achieve this goal, family members and professionals come together to create a personalized plan that breaks down barriers within the school environment. Although each IEP is unique, an IEP must outline a child’s present levels of functional performance in each subject area, list long-term and short term goals, describe accommodations and modifications needed, and list positive ways to address behavioral concerns. The IEP will also describe how progress will be reported. Transition planning must also be addressed in the IEP if the child is over 16 years old.
An important part of parenting is to ensure your children are receiving a quality education. This can often times feel like an overwhelming task when transferring to a new duty station and navigating through an unfamiliar school system. Having a child who needs additional educational support can make this process even more challenging. Often times, children who are experiencing challenges within the typical learning environment are given an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The ultimate goal of an IEP is to ensure a successful life after high school for a student who

The Army Community Service Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) staff recognize that the Special Education system can be challenging, and we are available to assist Families with navigating the IEP process. EFMP staff can assist parents with the procedure of requesting an initial evaluation for their child, and can also provide additional support at IEP meetings. Dear Scared and Broke, Congratulations on becoming parents! I’m glad you are reaching out for help. It is true that raising children is expensive, however there are definitely ways to cut costs and still meet your baby’s needs. One suggestion is to get some of the more expensive baby items second hand. Babies grow quickly and often you can find second hand items which were barely used. The one item you DO NOT want to buy second hand though is the car seat. If the car seat were to have been through a prior automobile accident, it cannot be trusted to protect your baby. Also, be aware that they do have expiration dates. Another suggestion is to apply for WIC (Women Infants Children), which is a federally funded program helping families insure their nutritional needs are met. Call 808-586-8175 to set up an appointment with the WIC clinic nearest you. Another great resource is a class offered here at Army Community Service (ACS) called Baby and Budget. You can call 808-655-4ACS for details. One last suggestion is to come and visit us here at the New Parent Support Program at ACS, Schofield. Jorge is a member at the Schofield Barracks Youth Center and a junior at Mililani High School where he is an active member in several programs. His favorite of which is JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps), where he holds the position of platoon sergeant. JROTC’s main purpose is to motivate young people to become better citizens and that has made a very positive impact in Jorge’s life. He has learned the key meaning of the Army values which are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage which he carries over into his everyday life . This program has taught him to be the very best at anything he does and to be accountable for his actions and deeds. In addition to being a positive role model at the Youth Center and JROTC at school, he is a member of the Drill Team, and Color Guard where he conducts drill events throughout the year.

Teen Read Week-Make a Comic Contest October 9-15
The Fort Shafter and SGT Yano Libraries will be celebrating with a comic contest on Instagram. Create a short comic consisting of one Instagram post with the hashtag #trw2016lib. Entries must be original and by a teen. Entries must be posted to Instagram by October 15 and voting will end on October 20, 2016. There will be two categories, Staff Pick and Most Likes, so tell your friends to vote for your entry. Winner of each category will receive a $25 gift card to Target.
