ACS is here to provide quality support services, various training opportunities and education to our Army community of Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees stationed on Oahu. 310 Brannon Rd, Bldg 690 Schofield Barracks 655-4ACS (4227)

53 YEARS AND STILL SERVING PROUDLY Dating back to the Revolutionary War, Army spouses assisting other Army Families has been a longstanding tradition. Army spouses led these early relief efforts by operating lending closets, assisting needy families, helping with emergencies, and providing comfort to the ill and bereaved. However, when the spouse volunteer transferred, this social assistance often waned or faded away. Please join our ohana in celebrating the Army Community Service (ACS)’s 53rd birthday! Enjoy tours of the new ACS building, light refreshments, birthday cake, and exciting activities and prizes for the entire family. Mahalo for your years of support and for helping us provide 53 years of excellence in customer service for our Soldiers and Families! July 25 • 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. • Army Community Service (BLDG 690) *Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) families may enjoy festivities from 12:30 p.m.

The Army gradually recognized the need for an official “Family Services Program” and in 1963 tasked LTC Emma Marie Baird to develop the concept of a system of social services that eventually would evolve into Army Community Service (ACS). On July 25, 1965, General Harold K. Johnson, Army Chief of Staff, sent a letter to all major commanders announcing the establishment of Army Community Service. ACS has provided services and resources to the Army community for 53 years, and it is a remarkable accomplishment. ACS will be hosting an Open House Celebration to commemorate the 53rd ACS Birthday on Wednesday, July 25th at ACS (310 Brannon Road, Bldg 690, between the PX and the Commissary), from 1330-1530. This event will feature a narrated tour of ACS programs, followed by cake, refreshments, and activities for kids. If someone is not familiar with ACS programs, the ACS Birthday celebration is a good opportunity to come by, meet the local ACS team, and learn about services provided through ACS. Currently, services offered by ACS include: Information and Referral, Employment Readiness, Relocation Readiness, Financial Readiness, the Family Advocacy Program, the Exceptional Family Member Program, Mobility, Deployment, and Stability Support Operations, the Army Volunteer Corps, Army Family Action Plan, Army Family Team Building, Survivor Outreach Service, and the Soldier and Family Assistance Center. ACS also administers the Army Emergency Relief (AER) program. Army Community Service continues to adapt to the changing needs of the Army Family and assists in developing resiliency skills for Soldiers and Family members needed in today’s modern Army. Congratulations and Happy Birthday ACS!

Dear Tina,

Dear Tina

My baby cries a lot. Sometimes, she still cries even after I feed her and change her diaper. I try everything to comfort her - from swaddling and walking with her, to even a drive in the car. But sometimes, nothing works. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. My husband thinks her crying is normal, but I feel like I’m not good at this. What am I missing? Thank you, Whit Sende Dear Whit Sende, Being unable to soothe your crying baby can be very stressful for parents, but it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Many babies cry much more than expected and often times it’s still within a normal range. I’m not sure how old your baby is, but it may be helpful to know that most newborns cry between one to three hours per day. It’s their way of telling you they have a need, are over-stimulated, or need to release stress. For most babies, the amount of crying each day will begin to increase after two weeks of age and peak around two months. You should notice the crying has decreased quite a bit by four or five months. Sometimes the crying will continue when you have done everything possible to meet their needs and to comfort them. This can be a phenomenon known as the Period of Purple Crying. The most important thing to understand is that it is normal to feel frustrated at times, but no matter how bad it gets, you should never shake your baby. Babies have weak neck muscles and shaking can cause serious brain damage or death. If you feel frustrated please place your baby in a safe place (i.e. the crib) and take a break for a few minutes. Call a friend for support if possible. If your baby cries for more than three hours per day (total) or you suspect a health concern, it would be a good idea to consult your pediatrician. I would also encourage you to contact New Parent Support Program (NPSP) at (808) 655-4ACS. NPSP is a professional team of nurses and social workers who can assist you with support and education with comforting your child, understanding and responding to their needs, and understanding their developmental stages. Best wishes, Tina www.himwr.com

School Liaison Public school registration is accepted throughout the year. If you have any questions, please contact the Army School Liaison Office. July 4 Independence Day. All public schools are closed July 15 Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications available online at ezmealapp.com July 19 Hawaii Board of Education General Business Meeting 1:30 p.m. Queen Liliuokalani Bldg. 1390 Miller Street Honolulu, HI 96813

Make sure the school nurse and teachers are aware of any medical conditions or allergies your child may have. Start transitioning your child from summer to school schedule before the first week of school. Set a homework schedule. Set a bedtime/curfew (especially for school nights.) Have a “dry run” (whether your child is walking to school or bussing it, do a run through of the routine and bring them into the building, walking them around so they get the feel of it.) Talk about making friends and also that old friendships can change. Make a list of clothes and supplies your child needs, so that you don’t buy more than is necessary.

Hourly Care

Hourly care is available on a space available basis at the Child Development Centers (CDC): Petersen, Helemano Military Reservation, Schofield Barracks, Bowen, Aliamanu Military Reservation and Ft.
