Army Community Service

NEW!! Dear Tina Column Army Community Service (ACS), Family Advocacy Program is pleased to bring you “Dear Tina,” an advice column devoted to parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Tina is also the mother of 3 children. She and her colleagues at NPSP will be teaming up to assist you with questions and connect you with the appropriate resources. Each month, you can find the “Dear Tina” column located in the ACS section of the magazine. Submit your questions TODAY to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Family Advocacy Program located in BLDG 2091, Schofield Barracks. We look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Tina, I was loving life here in Hawaii. My husband’s assignment is great and we have a lot of friends visiting. I have also fallen in love with hiking and have made some friends through an informal hiking network. My problem is that I am pregnant and for some reason I am feeling really scared. My husband is excited and I feel bad that I am not as “excited” as him. My pregnancy is forcing me to face the fact that I’ve never been around babies much and my parents were not the best example. My husband tries to be reassuring, but the truth is that he doesn’t have a lot of experience with little kids either. Neither of our parents can afford to come and help out after the baby is born. Any ideas? Miss Defied Dear Miss Defied, I’m glad you are enjoying Hawaii! Pregnancy, whether planned or unplanned, can trigger a wide range of emotions, and they likely won’t be the same for each person. The fact

that you are feeling scared can actually be a good sign. Your instincts are telling you that you are not prepared. That realization is the first step in taking action to become prepared. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help get you and your husband on your way to becoming great parents. The New Parent Support Program (NPSP) is a good starting place and can help you learn all of the basics of becoming loving, nurturing parents and help you to prepare in practical ways as well (like how to change a diaper). The first step is to attend our orientation, which is offered monthly. We will provide you with information on available classes like Boot Camp for New Dads, home visits, and other resources. Just call 655-4ACS to find out more. Best wishes, Tina

Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the New Parent Support Program. She is also a mother of three.
