NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM) as well as the Month of the Military Child. This year’s theme is: “Strong Communities Strengthen Families”, with key messages; BE INFORMED - Stay a step ahead, build your parenting skills BE ATTENTIVE - Consistent care and supervision help kids thrive BE SUPPORTIVE - Caring words and small actions make a big difference Raising awareness in the Army community helps to lower risk, reduce stigma, increase prevention, and improve health and safety for all in the Army community as these areas relate to child abuse and neglect. Throughout the month, blue pinwheels will be displayed in various locations or planted in “pinwheel gardens” at all Army installations and communities island-wide. The pinwheel is the nationwide symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month and serves as a reminder of the wonderful liveliness and spirit found in children.

Dear Tina Dear Tina, I’m going to be having a baby soon and I’m worried about how our dog will be with her. Is there anything I can do to help them get used to each other? Our dog has been our “baby” and has always been the center of attention. I’m afraid he might get jealous. Any advice? Signed, Doggie Mom

Dear Doggie Mom, I get this question a lot from expectant parents. It’s great you are planning ahead, as it will make the transition smoother. The Humane Society and the ASPCA have good suggestions for helping your dog to adjust to the new family member. Safety should always be the first consideration. The Humane Society recommends having your dog neutered prior to your baby’s arrival. Dogs who are neutered are usually calmer. This will also reduce the risk of bites. If your dog has presented any behavior problems or is not well-trained, consider enrolling him in a training class. While you and your new little bundle are still in the hospital, have a family member or friend bring your dog an article of clothing with your baby’s scent, to help prepare him for their first introduction. Maintaining your current routines with your dog will help support him in accepting a new family member. To reduce jealousy and to help your dog create a positive association with the baby, try to avoid ignoring him when the baby is present. The ASPCA recommends increasing petting, treats, and playing with your dog when your baby is with you. Most importantly, closely supervise your dog whenever the baby is accessible; never leave them unattended! I would encourage you to consult your pediatrician and your veterinarian for additional information. Best Wishes, Tina
