Niki’s ‘clip around the ears’ nets $2300 A NUMBER of locals have been busy doing their part for this year’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ event, with individuals and businesses rounding up donations in an effort to see friends, family members, and colleagues undergo radical haircuts. Nikita Allan, 16, was one, with the Mildura Senior College student losing her lengthy locks last Sunday in front of a packed Sandbar crowd. Seated in front of family members, friends, and a fair number of bar patrons, Niki managed to work up the courage to go through with the shave, with good friend Jack Mills firstly cutting her hair into a

crop-cut style, before professional hairdresser, and family friend, Vanessa Garlick finished the job with the clippers. It was a new style that helped Niki raise $2300 for the Leukemia Foundation, with her mum Sue saying the event had been eight months in the planning. “It was a monster effort,” she said. “Niki has been collecting donations for about eight months, and has been looking forward to this for quite a while.” Sue said that $1700 had been raised on the day alone, thanks largely to the sale of 500 raffle tickets.

While the majority of the crowd had arrived expecting to see Niki get a trim, what they didn’t expect was a surprise last minute entry. Inspired by Niki’s efforts, and his aunty’s requests, one spectator, a 14-year-old high school student, decided to put a challenge to the crowd. Putting his reasonably wellgroomed afro against the crowd’s generosity, the youngster offered to shave his locks if $200 could be raised in five minutes. The crowd quickly responded, with more than $400 raised in the allotted time.

Sue said that both Niki and herself had been overwhelmed with the support shown by locals and businesses. “Niki has been very passionate about this cause, and it was fantastic to see such a large number of people support her on the day,” she said. Her goal to enlist support for reversing the massive environmental problems facing the Murray continues today. Recently named as Australia’s first Salinity and Water Quality Ambassador by Environment Australia, she continues to spread the word via her ongoing roles as an official Save the Murray Ambassador and spokesperson for National Water Week. In marathon swimming, Tammy credits much of her success to another swimming legend, Olympic swimming champion Dawn Fraser, who has overseen some of her swims and offered support and encouragement for every challenge and new goal. One of her most recent records came in July, 2006, when Tammy smashed the 81-year old record held by legendary female athlete and first woman to swim the English Channel, Gertrude Ederle. Her new record of 5 hours, 6 minutes and 48 seconds from Battery Park, New York City to Sandy Hook, New Jersey eclipsed Ederle’s record, set in 1925, by 2 hours and 5 minutes. Tammy said one of the reasons she selected the record attempt was because Gertrude Ederle was her childhood inspiration and hero. “Although I have swum more than one and a half times around the world, those 22 miles were some of the most meaningful,” said. “Meeting the Ederle family and getting to know them helped me to swim with the spirit of Gertrude. She was a pioneer for women, a barrier-breaker for all athletes and a timeless inspiration.” When not swimming marathons, Tammy spends much of her time inspiring other Australians to achieve their goals as a motivational speaker. Two years ago she took a brief spell from swimming following the birth of her first baby Rebecca…but during her pregnancy she estimated she clocked up around 500 kilometres. Just for the record; The total distance Tammy has swum so far is 65,000kms (1.5 times round the world). She has represented Australia in over 18 international marathons, holds six World Records, won 16 Victorian Royal
