few others to have him around, providing us with a new challenge each week. “A few of the backpackers that have come through along with Felix have proved outstanding players, and it’s been a lot of fun playing with and against them.” “Because badminton isn’t a major sport in Mildura it can get repetitive in the sense that you’re playing the same people each week. It’s been fun going up against a range of new players, all with different styles.” For Felix it’s been a case of rekindling a love of a sport he hadn’t played for a year, and enjoying a small reminder of home. “I really do love this game,” he said. “It’s very a fast, reflex-based sport. “You have to be very fit to play, and you have to have quick reflexes to get the shuttle back over the net when it’s smashed at you.” And he wasn’t joking, as the Mildura Weekly watched on the

intensity and speed in which games are played was easy to see. Shuttles flew from one side of the court to the other in the blink of an eye, with team mates desperately attempting to call each other into, or out of, position. At one stage Felix failed to avoid a fierce return, and was struck hard on the body for his efforts. And by the look of the giant welt that appeared on his arm moments later, those little shuttles pack a punch. “Mostly you don’t have time to think about what you’re doing,” he said. “You just have to react. It’s a very exciting game, and one I’m glad I’ve started to enjoy again.” Jeff said he hoped more visitors and backpackers would start enjoying the sport during their stay, and that the opportunity of playing unknown opponents like Felix would continue keeping the sport fresh. “We would love to get more

Jeff said he would be sad to see the young player go, and would miss the friendly on-court rivalry the two were starting to develop. Badminton is played every Thursday and Sunday nights at the Irymple Leisure Centre, with racquet hire available for $2, and a match fee of $5 applying for senior members. SUNRAYSIA badminton has adopted an international flavour of late, with a number of backpackers like Felix Gosch breathing new life into the competition. Felix, an industrial engineering student from Germany, has been backpacking around Australia for six months, arriving in Mildura two months ago after a stint in Melbourne. He quickly found work with a local citrus grower, learning about the local badminton competition within days of landing. “A friend of mine (Ashlie) told me that badminton was played in town,” Felix said. “I play back home, and thought it would be fun to go with her.” When Felix says he’s played badminton before, what he means is that at 27, he’s almost a veteran of the sport with 14 years experience under his belt. With that in mind he casually made his way to the Irymple Leisure Centre (where the competition is held twice a week), and to his surprise was placed in the lowest division available. “We had no idea that Felix had played before,” Mildura District Badminton Association President Jeff Rose said. “I think everyone assumed he was another visitor who wanted to come and have fun, which is something we encourage people to do.” Felix’s knowledge of the game quickly asserted itself, steadily making his way up the ranks and becoming one of the stand-out players in the top division. “It didn’t take long to see that 3 points o Felix am had I? talent, and that he was n the 19th August, I wasaddition orphaned atto the going to be1883, a great y age in the Roman Catholic monastery of Jeff said. ne, local where Ibadminton learnt the trade scene,” of a seamstress. hool“It’s vacations weregreat spent with been for relatives, myself and a
