Hey seals! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s officially the new school year and I hope you are adjusting well to this online format. Remember to take care of yourself and take breaks whenever necessary! Thank you for staying active in key club during the summer and participating in our service events! We will continue to hold virtual service events so you can look forward to those. Happy September seals! I hope you’re staying safe this school year and doing whatever is necessary to prevent from catching the virus. This month, I highly encourage you to still participate in our events even though we have school! I wanted to give a HUGE thanks to Aiden Ngo for making the cover for this month’s issue of The Sealy Times. Thank you so much Aiden for taking the time to create it <3 I hope school has been good to you so far! I know it might get stressful but it’ll be okay. Anyways, I hope y’all are safe and healthy and I hope you join us for more events!

by Nancy Phan, Treasurer From an outside perspective, people will think that Key Club is a club that makes keys. This is one misconception. Key Club’s main purpose is to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. We are also a social club that strives to welcome anybody who wants to join. We are part of the Kiwanis family, which invites students as young as six years old to college students to help out their community. With that, this leads to another misconception in which we are an exclusive club, as the majority are Asians. Again, this is false. Key Club is filled with a diverse range of people, from everywhere around the world. We are always welcoming people regardless of race, religion, or gender. Though many people see that there are groups in the club, and don’t feel included, but, rest assured, as long as you join in, we will welcome you with embracing hands. So don’t worry. Just come join us!
Mountain Viewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charity Miles event was very successful and open to the division! It started on July 14 and ended on August 14. Members from all over the division participated in this month long service event. There was a prize of a $10 giftcard and a goodie bag for the person with the most miles. Once the event ended, the Charity Miles group reached over 1000 miles! This was a great opportunity to get your service up and be active during quarantine. Charity Miles is an app that has people exercise and they donate a certain amount of money to your choice of organization depending on the amount of miles you walked or ran. This event was a great opportunity for members and officers to earn more service hours and to stay active during quarantine. Picture credit: Andy Smithwick
Edgewood and Mountain Viewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s joint Color-A-Smile service event was successful! There were two Google Meets calls. One on July 26 and the other on August 9. These meetings and the event was opened to the division. Members and officers from the two clubs and other clubs in the division joined in and participated in Color-A-Smile. Kiwanis advisors such as Ms. Kaye Biggs, Ms. Tina Carrey, and Ms. Mary Price joined the calls. Color-A-Smile is an organization that collects coloring pages and coloring books to distribute to senior citizens. They do this to help make their days just a little bit better.
Color-A-Smile allowed members to spend some time coloring and get to know other Key Clubbers on the Google Meets calls. This event allowed Edgewood and Mountain View to bond and become closer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really liked this event because of its simplicity and how relaxing it was. To be honest, I was actually not a big fan of coloring before this, but this event has really made me want to buy coloring books. I also plan to continue volunteering with the Color-A-Smile organization. The meeting call was great and I loved how comfortable the members in the call made me feel even though I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t interact much. - Angelina Sin â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;24
Bean Bean Bean is our new service event! It’ll be going on for two weeks and ends on September 7th. This is open to the division. Go to beanbeanbean.com to get started! This website donates money to organizations based on how many beans you get. It has different types of bean icons when you reach an x number of beans.
Since there was no DCON last term, shirts are still here! D35W is taking pre-orders for DCON shirts for a donation of only $5! Go pre-order them when you can! They’re super cute and the money is going to support the YES campaign which helps the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund.
Math for UNICEF This event will be released after the Bean Bean Bean event ends in September. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be open to the division. Math for UNICEF will be from 9/14-9/28.
On August 14 at 3 PM, Mountain View Key Club had their first general club of the school year! They had their Kiwanis advisor, Ms. Kaye Biggs and faculty advisor, Mr. Sergio Martinez on the call. The meeting consisted of the Key Club Pledge led by Vice President, Kaylee San, introductions of guests and officers, a presentation of what is Key Club, a two truths and one lie icebreaker, current division wide events, and then a raffle. Everyone excluding officers and advisors, were entered into a raffle for one of three seal plush keychains and a spirit pack! “I really enjoyed the first meeting. Still with You- BTS Jungkook The song reminds me of one you would play while studying or while it’s raining. I remember the day it came out, I had a lot of anxiety over organic chem and listening the song just calmed me down. I was reminded that I’m not alone. Constant bad thoughts gloated through my head, but the calming nature of his voice and the instrumentals allow for my mind to be cleared and I feel appreciated and loved. - Christine

There are four core values that Key Clubbers uphold. Leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness give Key Club members some rules that they should stand by while in and after Key Club. “Leadership is grounded in humility and service to others. A true leader listens, recognizes, and empowers.” “Character is built by everyday acts of kindness, integrity and teamwork to grow stronger relationships and communities.” “Compassion for others is a cornerstone of the Key Club experience, to one’s community.” “We welcome people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to join in serving and making a positive difference in our world.” -Key Club International All these traits help shape Key Clubbers into down to earth leaders and good people.
