In English and various languages with English subtitles. Altai shamans and leaders fight a natural gas pipeline set to run through the Ukok Plateau, a World Heritage Site in southern Russia. They use ceremony, singing and mapping of sacred sites to create a park preserve where they can transform tourists into pilgrims. They also seek the return of the 2,500-year-old Ukok Princess, a shaman ancestor whose mummified remains were exhumed in violation of sacred law. And near Mount Shasta, the Winnemem Wintu people use the same methods as the Altai, plus a war dance, to preserve a sacred spring. Their tribal designation stripped away, their land flooded by the Shasta Dam, they continue to counter plans to raise the dam further. GPS technology and the Altai shamans aid their quest to put themselves literally back on the map. WORLD PREMIERE —Carol Harada

In English and various languages with English subtitles. Corporate development is ensnaring the indigenous people still living off the land in Papua New Guinea and Alberta, Canada. In Papua New Guinea, 97% of the land is owned by indigenous people, and therefore environmentally protected. But a government-sanctioned Chinese nickel mining company brings false promises of development trickle-down. As traditional people are forced off Kurumbukari Highland, grassroots activists rise up to prevent the devastation of “deep sea tailings” from the mine, which flow uncontrolled into vital coastal waterways. Across the globe, First Nations people are split between tar sands oil refinery jobs and living off the Athabascan River’s traditional hunting grounds. Feeling industry’s negative impact, including a 30% rise in rare cancers and deformed fish and game, indigenous people are using GPS mapping to track their land rights and document treaty-breaking devastation. WORLD PREMIERE —Carol Harada

In Icelandic with English subtitles. Old Ofeig was a loud-mouthed boor when he was alive. But now that he’s dead he’s more ornery than ever (though his piano playing has improved). When daughter Anna and her boyfriend Ingi decide to sell the house, Ofeig’s ghost fumes at the idea of being left to “live” with strangers. His somewhat spooky, seriously self-absorbed supernatural self interferes not just with realtors but with every aspect of the couple’s life (it’s hard to get in the mood when the ghost of your girlfriend’s father might be watching). Desperate to save his relationship and sanity, Ingi attempts to exorcise his father-inlaw-to-be from the house, but family ties prove hard to break. While Dad may be turning their world—and their bookshelves— upside down, Anna finds herself reluctant to force him out of the only home he’s ever known. In this comical showdown between past and future, will any of them rest in peace?
