It is difficult to say “goodbye” to a beloved teacher who taught for 44 years, 41 of which were spent teaching at Maumee Valley. But that is the task as long time teacher Nancy Fish retires.
Nancy began her teaching journey with a degree in Learning and Behavior Disorders and later earned a Masters of Teaching. In 1974 she started as a student teacher and the next year she taught kindergarten in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1976 she married Jim Fish and one year later she began her tenure at Maumee Valley when she was hired as a Primary teacher. In 1986 Jim and Nancy co-directed Hob Haven along with Chuck and Ann Sprandel, working the camp while tending their two week old son, Adam. A year later Nancy and Jim became the sole camp coordinators and continued in that position for 20 years. When Karen Lundholm became Head of Lower School, Nancy moved into the Primary School coordinator position. Nancy became the SummerTime director in 2007 and continued for six years. The next year Nancy became Director of Student Services/Intervention Specialist, where she defined the position by creating and expanding a student support department. Nancy and Jim are looking forward to taking the “California Here We Come” retirement trip to Yosemite National Park and San Francisco. They are then planning travel to the “I” countries – Iceland (to see the Northern Lights), Ireland, and Italy. After the “I” countries they will start on the “P’s” – Portugal and Peru. A quiet retirement at home is not in the foreseeable future for these former educators!
NANCY FISH
As teachers and parents, Jim and Nancy experienced every day of their children’s education first hand, from birth (Red Balloon) to graduation and had the peace of mind of knowing the people who educated their children. Nancy says she and Jim would have followed the same path at any school their children attended but they are happy and grateful they got to do it at Maumee Valley.
