Muslim Link Staff Writer “The opposite of fear is hope and our task is to stoke the fire of hope,” said Rabbi Michael Holzman of the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation to a small but packed room in the All Dulles Area Society (ADAMS) Center. In an event hosted by the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Qurtuba Institute and the Interfaith Committee at the ADAMS Center on November 21st 2011, Imam Mohamed Magid of ADAMS and Rabbi Michael Holzman of the Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation came together in hopes of clarifying both Islamic law, Sharia, and Jewish Law, Halakha, and contextualizing their relevance in a secular society. With growing fear that Sharia law will somehow usurp American democracy,
the Islamic religious tradition has been a constant discussion in political campaigns and on the streets in the form of passionate protests against what some believe will bring the downfall of the American democratic ideal. The relevance of Sharia has now taken new meaning as the Muslim community in America is faced with defending a complex and contextual set of rules in both a political and social context, a challenge even for Muslims to fully understand and agree upon within their own religious communities. The Imam and Rabbi first overviewed the laws in their most basic definitions as a refresher for members of their respective congregations and a primer for those of other faiths in the audience. Though distinctly different in their comprehensiveness and application, both Sharia and Halakha law provide

the overarching fundamentals of their respective faiths, which unbeknownst to many are strikingly similar. Imam Mohamed Magid spoke to the evolution of Sharia itself and its significance in a local context. While many mistake Sharia law as it’s played out in various Muslim countries, Magid warned against the confusing of religion and culture and emphasized the importance of understanding Sharia law as it fits within the laws of the land in which you live. “Sharia is a text and there is an understanding of the text in context... Application of Islamic law has been impacted by the circumstances where people live. There is an evolution of fiqh, which is the understanding of Islamic law but there is no evolution of the text itself. The text is principle,” said Magid.
The discussion between the two religious leaders created a unique juxtaposition of religious ideologies that brought forth the differences between the laws of the faith. However, at the same time it highlighted the similar struggles both faiths have faced in contextualizing the laws in the United States for critics who derive their understanding from their application in countries under religious governmental rule, worlds away. The same topic that has been inciting so much recent aggressive political and public discourse was calmly, and at times even humorously, addressed by the local area’s theological minds. “There’s 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, we only have 18 to 20 million Jews..if someone asked me the question “Does

Opposition to Women-Only Swim Program Did Not Materialize PATH members packed Columbia Association meeting to show support of the initiative By Marge Neal
Columbia Patch, November 23, 2011 People Acting Together in Howard members packed the Columbia Association’s tiny board room Tuesday night to provide a voice of support in a debate that never materialized. About 55 residents, concerned that opponents of a women-only swim program would ask the board to cancel the program, organized to show their support but it wasn’t needed, and the program will continue — at least until January or February. The initiative is a pilot program. Association staff members will evaluate the program and its attendance after three or four months — it started Oct. 25 — to see if use justifies its existence, a staff member told Patch earlier this month. News articles about the program over the past week have elicited comments
described as nasty, hateful and vitriolic by association staff member Jessie Newburn. “We’ve been watching the comments as well, and it’s been really tough to see and hear the comments,” she said before the meeting began. “Some of the comments have been horrible, horrible — and there’s no way of telling if the people are even in Columbia.” The request for the program originated in the local Muslim community by women who cannot enjoy swimming in a co-ed setting because of religious dress codes.

More than 100 students participated in this university’s first-ever Undercover as a Muslim Woman event, which invited students to wear a headscarf — also known as a hijab — for one day to understand what Muslim women who cover their hair experience on a day-today basis. Although many students who took part in yesterday’s event said they “felt pretty” while wearing the hijab,

The event was organized by Muslim Women of Maryland member Sarah Mostafa, along with members of Community Roots, the Sisterhood of Unity and Love and the Nyumburu Cultural Center. About 130 students filled the Stamp Student Union Atrium to share and listen to participants’ experiences. Although Mostafa, who covers her hair, said this campus was an ideal site for the event because of its diversity and its students’ open-mindedness, most have misconceptions about what it means to wear a headscarf and practice modesty. “Definitely we don’t mean to simplify
[a Muslim woman’s] life in a piece of fabric, but … I think it’s more interactive than if I were to just tell someone about how it is to be a Muslim woman,” said Mostafa, a senior environmental science and policy major. Although students said they took part in the event to better understand the cultural and religious practices of Muslim women, the scarf also proved to be a flattering accessory. “As soon as I put it on, I don’t know why but today I just felt pretty,” said Ashley Evangelista, a junior Chinese and philosophy major. “I put it on and I put my cardigan on and started taking pictures of myself in the mirror.” But nearly every student who spoke said they felt a deep sense of unity and
sisterhood after seeing others on the campus wear headscarves. Senior Arabic studies and linguistics major Emily Perry said she feels closer to many of her friends who cover their hair. “Faith is a part of who we are, and if I don’t understand that, I don’t understand my friends,” Perry said. But for some students, such as senior Arabic studies major Safia Latif — who first began wearing a headscarf in third grade and took it off nearly four years ago — yesterday’s event provided them with an opportunity to wear the hijab in a more accepting environment. Latif said she took her hijab off after experiencing a series of traumatizing instances while growing up — including a girl who ripped off her headscarf, which left her in tears, and a classmate who flushed her shirt down the toilet during gym class. “Today was the first time in a long time I wore it all day,” Latif said. “I was a little nervous, but it just felt completely natural. Son’s Muslim Faith Divides One Black Family By Lonnae O’Neal Parker
Washington Post, 11/5/2011 Joshua Blackwell finally visited his mother in North Carolina this summer and they talked about his conversion to Islam. The conversation didn’t go well. Margaret Blackwell had returned at midnight from her factory job making surgical bandages. Joshua, a D.C. public school teacher, was still up. She pulled out her Bible. He opened his Koran. They tried to reach each other but ended up doing battle. It was 1 John and Surah 31, verses and ayats. It was only those washed in the blood of the risen Christ, and the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him, until after 2 a.m. And later that morning, they resumed. “You ever had somebody die in your family?” Margaret Blackwell, 58, asked a reporter quietly. Her hair was pulled into a neat bun, and her face was smooth and unlined. She sat in a straight-backed armchair in the living room of her twobedroom apartment and stared pensively toward the floor. Big Wheel Gospel — 1510 AM — played softly in the background. She tapped her foot quickly up and down. “That’s how it felt.” Joshua had been getting his 2-yearold daughter something to eat in the kitchen, and listening to his mother talk. He converted in 2008 but only told his mother about it in a phone call six months ago. This was his first visit home since
then. He stepped into the living room, his 6-foot-5 frame filling the space, and made a statement that was part longing for understanding. “I just believe in religious tolerance, that we should respect each other,” he said. The Koran says to hold your mother in high honor, and he does, he said. “But I’m a man. I made this decision as a man, not as a boy, and I will live with my decision.” They’ll always be family, but “decisions have consequences,” Margaret said quietly, without looking at her son. “I have one son in Atlanta already in that [Islam], and my hope was that Josh would bring him out.” She tapped her foot faster. The Blackwells love one another, but their differences stretch out like the arms of Jesus between them. As in many African American families, Islam is a source of tension. Not because of suspicions about terrorism or Sept. 11. Joshua’s family is worried about his soul. In the living room of the Blackwells’ home outside Greensboro, filled with family memorabilia and artifacts of faith, there are no geopolitics and no clashes of civilizations. knots about Islam, African Americans have historically seen it differently. The number of black Muslims has always been relatively low, but the religion’s influence in the black community is long-standing and familiar. Its roots trace back to slavery — scholars contend that 20 to 30 percent of those brought to America came from Muslimdominated countries in West Africa — and Islamic-based movements of the early 20th century had self-definition and empowerment as core premises. Founded in Detroit in 1930, the Nation of Islam combined economic determinism, religious nationalism and a politically tailored theology. The religion gained sway among the working class, the dispossessed and especially the imprisoned. In the early 1960s, Malcolm X became the Nation of Islam’s most dynamic and controversial leader, and historian Manning Marable estimated its membership surpassed the 100,000 mark, primarily in the urban north. The sect’s ability to transform lives through its strict behavioral code became legendary. And its image of strong, independent black men (although rarely women) was attractive and sympathetic even if most blacks didn’t believe in the theology involved. After the 1975 death of Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, Islam in black America became simultaneously more traditional and more dispersed in the wider
culture. His son Warith D. Muhammad embraced a more orthodox form of Islam. Other orthodox African American Islamic communities sprang up across the country. Alex Haley immortalized his Muslim ancestor, Kunta Kinte, in his 1977 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “Roots.” Jazz and the black arts movement had Islamic tenets, aesthetics and converts at or near their core. In the 1980s, with drugs and violence at historic levels in black communities, Louis Farrakhan reconstituted the Nation of Islam with a strident re-articulation of black nationalism (and frequent antiSemitism). Given that history — and blacks’ common experience of being suspect in a white society — terrorism is rarely part of the African American Muslim conversation. Instead, being Muslim “has come to be regarded as the most authentic way of being black in America,” Columbia University researcher Zaheer Ali said. “It’s the blackest spot on your black card.” Some of the biggest names in hip-hop — Rakim, Lauryn Hill, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West — are Muslims or have sampled Islamic themes in their music. That’s how they first reached young Joshua Blackwell, growing up in Reidsville, N.C., where his daddy preached the gospel of Jesus Christ.

His father, Lenward, a truck driver and associate pastor, taught Sunday school, and the family attended Bible study, choir practice, children’s church and revivals that went for days. “Before he was a preacher, he was a wild dude,” Joshua said. A drink-moonshine, carry-a-shotgun kind of dude. His father would study Scripture with him. “If he wanted me to know something, he’d have me read it” in the Bible and they’d talk it out for hours. Question God, his father urged him, so God can answer. Their neighborhood was rough, said his older sister, Sheneka Jackson, 29, a divorced mother of six boys who is studying early child care at a local community college. Young guys “were drug dealers, they had felonies, they had children at an early age. Joshua was different.” Margaret Blackwell had two sons from a previous marriage. When Joshua’s older brother Ron, now a barber and truck driver in Atlanta, went to prison on drug charges, he joined the Nation of Islam and later became a Sunni Muslim — and, in Joshua’s estimation, a better man. His oldest brother, Tyrone, is in prison on drug charges. Margaret knew things would be different for her youngest son. “They didn’t have the Word in them like Josh did,” she said. “He was the family go-getter,” the first to go to college. Their best hope. Joshua’s views of Islam were complicated. He was enormously moved by how his brother changed after he converted. The speeches of Malcolm X preaching black self-sufficiency that he watched over and over on YouTube helped make sense of the dysfunction he saw around him. “I used to say I’d be down with Muslims if they believed in Jesus,” Joshua said. He recognized that Islam had become associated with terrorism after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but says he never married the two. He calls Jim Crow
segregation and violence a form of terrorism but said, “I would never say there’s such a thing as a Christian terrorist. “Besides, my brother was Muslim and you couldn’t tell me he was a terrorist.” On breaks from Winston-Salem State University, where he studied business, Joshua would lie across the living room floor talking to his mother about his Bible group. In 2007, he met Danielle Matthews, a former Miss University of the District of Columbia, at a student leadership conference at Bowie State University. They became Facebook friends and he learned she’d been a Muslim since childhood. “He pretty much said if I didn’t accept Jesus Christ as my personal lord and savior I would be going to hell,” Danielle recalled. In January 2008, he started reading the Koran to formulate arguments to bring Danielle and Ron back to salvation. But that’s not what happened. “I knew reading [the Koran] immediately that my life would have to change,” Joshua said. He found in Islam “a structure for better human life. It was almost like I was reading a plan for success.” Every ill that had plagued his community and his family came into focus. He’d questioned God, like his father taught him, and God answered. Still, Islam “really looks like it’s calling you to something extreme,” he’d say to himself. He’d have to pray five times a day, prepare his food differently and become a more intentionally religious man. He shared his feelings with Danielle, Ron and one of his closest friends, Brandon Smith. But not with his parents, who were, by this time, divorced. His mother felt rejected when his older brother converted, and they became estranged. And his dad, who taught him the word of God, who scraped and borrowed money to send him to college, was dying of lung cancer. “He was sick,” Joshua said. There was nothing for it. And he didn’t want to upset his father at the end of his life. Though a newfound religious zeal was lighting him up, he ultimately didn’t tell the man he calls his “greatest inspiration in life.” In July 2008, Lenward Blackwell died. A

Joshua was respectful and told his godmother he valued her opinion, but Mitchell said, “I got off the phone and my heart was heavy, and I cried out to the Lord that he would show Joshua the truth.” And she prayed for his mother, who was so very hurt.
Two years ago, when Joshua told Sheneka Jackson that he was Muslim, the siblings pretty much stopped talking. As youngsters, his sister would cry when Joshua got whippings, and as they grew up, he was her confidant as she struggled and had baby after baby. But after he converted, she became “afraid that we won’t end up in the same place” in the afterlife, Jackson said. She wasn’t concerned about any political freight being Muslim in America can carry. “I can’t worry about somebody blowing up the World Trade Center,” Jackson said. “I was worried about my mother’s reaction.” Joshua’s godmother, the Rev. Alla Mitchell, talked to him after she learned of his conversion. “I know Jesus is more than a prophet — he’s God’s son. That’s how we were discussing it,” Mitchell said. “It was me trying to let him know that you can’t forsake that part of salvation,

Regional Muslim Martial Arts Tournament Planned for Christmas Day By A. Idris Palmer
Muslim Link Contributing Writer On December 25th 2011, Dar Al-Taqwa in Ellicott City, Maryland has the honor of being the venue of the United Muslim Martial Arts Association (UMMAA) Second Open Muslim Martial Arts Tournament from 8AM-4PM with trophies and awards for all participants. In 2005, UMMAA held its first tournament with great success. This upcoming event at Dar Al-Taqwa is unique. It is open to all styles, Karate, Kung Fu, Silat, Ju Jitsu and Grappling. It will also include demonstrations by various masters and practitioners. Competition will include open hand forms, weapons forms, sparring, self defense and grappling. It will also feature separate children’s and youth divisions, as well as a separate women’s division for both girls and adults officiated by female judges.

But on a rainy Monday, November 21, 2011, about one thousand local EthiopianAmerican Muslims staged a protest in front of the State Department, asking the United States to prevent US taxpayer funds from supporting the Ethiopian government’s oppression of its Muslim minority. The protest was organized by an Ad-hoc Committee of local Ethiopian American Muslim consisting about around 15 members. In a letter to Ambassador Johnnie Carson, the Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of African Affairs at the US State Department, the Ad-hoc Committee wrote “our concern lies in the government’s unconstitutional restrictions imposed on the peace loving Ethiopian Muslims through the promotion of a religious sect of its choice.” The religious sect referred to is a group commonly known as the “Ahbash” or “Habashis”, founded

UMMAA was founded in 1989 by Brother Abdul-Muhsiy Abdul-Rahman from Baltimore, Maryland. Brother AbdulMuhsiy is a well known practitioner of the Chinese martial art of Taichi and has participated and officiated in numerous national and international martial arts tournaments, such as the US Capitol Classics, the Battle of Baltimore and the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship (ICMAC). He is also a contributing editor for Action Martial Arts by Ethiopian-Lebanese Muslim scholar Sheikh Abdullah al-Harari . The sect is best known in the United States for claiming the qibla direction in North America is south-east instead north-east, the direction agreed upon by all major Muslim organizations in the nation. In the west, the sect operates under the organization name “Association of Islamic Charitable Projects (AICP)”. The government of Meles Zenawi put the Ahbash in charge of the religious affairs of Ethiopia’s Muslims earlier this year, and the Ahbash have started a heavy handed indoctrination program throughout areas with heavy Muslim populations, forcing people to attend “religious training” camps or face police interviews and possible arrest. Ethiopian Muslims say this move by the government is in violation of the Ethiopian constitution which prevents the government from getting involved in religious affairs, but is tacitly supported by the United States, in large part because the Ahbash are seen as a friendly alternative

For a period of 10 years, from 19891999, UMMAA held annual martial art performances and exhibitions usually during the summer months in the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. From 2000 to the present, it has held them on Dec. 25th, the first one being held at Dunbar Senior High School in Baltimore. UMMAA has always geared its events as a means of da’wah and to encourage Muslims to participate in the martial arts for health, fitness and self-defense. He sees the event as a vehicle for da’wah, and that the date of Dec 25th was specifically chosen to enable Muslims who may be off that day, to invite their non-Muslim family members and associates to a family oriented Islamic event.

Many local Ethiopian Muslims refused to speak to the Muslim Link on record, for fear that their relatives will face harassment by the Ethiopian government. Sister Zenith said she cared for her religion more than her family, so it was important for her to speak out.

Ron Paul 9/11 And Foreign Policy Discussion On Face The Nation Gets Heated By Christopher Santarelli

Ron Paul is known to at times have opinions on foreign policy that are out of step with the party he is campaigning to represent in the general election for President. On Sunday’s [November 20, 2011] Face the Nation, Paul got into a tense discussion with CBS host Bob Schieffer in regards to the candidate’s foreign policy beliefs: As Paul gains more support and is taken seriously as a contender for the Republican nomination for president, his beliefs are examined under a microscope to see how he differs from the other candidates. As Paul grows in popularity, more questions have been asked about his foreign policy positions. As Schieffer pressed Paul Sunday in
regards to past statements on 9/11, the candidate clarified his opinion that flawed U.S. policy “contributed” to the causes that led to the terrorist attacks on. Paul however stopped short of saying the attacks were America’s “fault.” “To argue the case that they want to do us harm, because we are free and prosperous, I think is a very very dangerous notion because it’s not true,” said Paul. Pointing to statements made by the Department of Defense and in the 9/11 Commission, Paul said that there is a connection between U.S. policies and what caused the 9/11 attacks, while emphasizing, “that’s a far cry from blaming America.”
The discussion shifted to U.S. policy towards Iran, where Paul believes the U.S. could extend greater diplomatic efforts rather than military action, similar to the way that the U.S. handled the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Paul emphasized that “Iran doesn’t have a bomb, there is no proof,” and that he is fearful the U.S. will “overreact.” “Mr. Paul, may I interrupt you for a second,” Schieffer said in a harsher tone. “No one has suggested in the U.S. government that we are going to bomb Iran,” but pose very tough sanctions. Paul said he opposes sanctions because they are “the initial steps to war.” As for Schieffer’s claim that no one is suggesting “bombing” Iran, Paul advised the television host to “listen to the debates.”

The Hill, 11/14/2011 Herman Cain said that he believes a majority of American Muslims share extremist views in an interview published on Monday.
Asked if he thought this individual — whom Cain would only identify as “a very prominent voice in the Muslim community” — was right, Cain said that although he found it hard to believe, ultimately he trusted his adviser.
In an interview that included a few eyebrow-raising comments, Cain’s exchange about American Muslims may get the most attention.
“Yes, because of the respect that I have for this individual. Because when he told me this, he said he wouldn’t want to be quoted or identified as having said that,” Cain said.
“I have had one very well-known Muslim voice say to me directly that a majority of Muslims share the extremist views,” Cain said in an interview with GQ.
In March, Cain made waves when he said that if he were elected, he would not feel “comfortable” in appointing Muslims to his Cabinet. The interview — which included questions
from GQ’s food critic — also touched on some of the culinary themes that have permeated the Republican nominating contest. Cain famously described himself as not the flavor of the week or month after his rise to the top of the polls, joking that instead he was Häagen-Dazs’s black walnut, a flavor that “tastes good all the time.” The GQ writers challenged Cain to assign flavors to his competitors and Cain obliged, labeling Mitt Romney plain vanilla and Texas Gov. Rick Perry rocky road. He was then asked what flavor Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) would be: “Michele Bachmann ... I’m not going to say it. I’m not going to say it,” Cain said.
But pressed by his interviewers, Cain relented, saying that Bachmann would be “tutti-frutti.” “I know I’m going to get in trouble,” Cain said. The survey identifies the work of 212 faith-oriented groups, which spend about $390 million per year. That is up from less than 40 such groups in 1970. The biggest spenders, the survey says, include the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and established social conservative groups focusing on abortion, same-sex marriage and home-schooling. The report’s authors said that the science of identifying “religious” advocates was imprecise but that they picked groups that said they were driven by faith convictions. Some longtime Hill advocates highlighted the report’s finding that the vast majority of religious advocates stick to softer education-type outreach and don’t get into explicit politics, such as donating money to candidates. Others said the report showed how tiny the field is, compared with the tens of thousands of mostly corporate lobbyists that have ballooned in number in Washington. “No one is going on a golfing vacation in Scotland with us,” said John Carr, a policy advocate for the Catholic bishops, who first came to the Hill in the 1970s. “Washington is awash with money, and it’s harder to break through.” The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Vatican’s U.S. arm, is the second-largest spender, investing $26.7 million in advocacy, according to the study. “Religious lobbyists used to be like subsistence farmers, and now it’s like agribusiness,” said the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the 15th-biggest spender, with $6.3 million spent on advocacy in 2008, according to the Pew study. The study noted that 80 percent of the groups are registered as tax-exempt nonprofit organizations, meaning they are restricted in how much direct lobbying they can do. But some watchdog groups that focus on money in politics have said that federal law exempts some religious organizations from having to disclose communications related to lobbying. The work of religious advocates mirrors the issues that come and go in public life. Early groups focused on trying to ban alcohol and funding for Native American schools. Different issues rose and fell, as did organizations. The Moral Majority, once one of the nation’s largest advocacy groups with millions of members, closed its Washington operations in the late 1980s as religious conservatives became
more confident that their values were being heard. The study noted that the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, also eliminated its D.C. office “due to declining revenues.” Today, foreign affairs issues are getting more lobbying attention, particularly human rights and poverty. Compared with their numbers in the U.S. population, Muslims and Jews make up a bigger chunk of advocates. There are 17 Muslim advocacy groups and 25 Jewish advocacy groups, while the faith groups represent less than 1 percent and 1.7 percent of the American public, respectively, according to Pew. About 8 percent of groups identify as mainline Protestant, compared with being 18 percent of the population. The study doesn’t attempt to measure influence, but veterans in the field say the religious advocacy groups wield a particular kind of clout. “I think there is a grudging respect for consistency, even with people who disagree with us,” said Carr, whose group has been active in several recent policy
debates, such as protecting entitlements for the poor during budget-cutting this year and adding tougher antiabortion language to House legislation on health care in 2009. “But the reality is, our priorities are not Washington’s. Obama: A Disaster For Civil Liberties By Jonathan Turley With the 2012 presidential election before us, the country is again caught up in debating national security issues, our ongoing wars and the threat of terrorism. There is one related subject, however, that is rarely mentioned: civil liberties. Protecting individual rights and liberties — apart from the right to be tax-free — seems barely relevant to candidates or voters. One man is primarily responsible for the disappearance of civil liberties from the national debate, and he is Barack Obama. While many are reluctant to admit it, Obama has proved a disaster not just for specific civil liberties but the civil liberties cause in the United States. Civil libertarians have long had a dysfunctional relationship with the Democratic Party, which treats them as a captive voting bloc with nowhere else to turn in elections. Not even this history, however, prepared civil libertarians for Obama. After the George W. Bush years, they were ready to fight to regain ground lost after Sept. 11. Historically, this country has tended to correct periods of heightened police powers with a pendulum swing back toward greater individual rights. Many were questioning the extreme measures taken by the Bush administration, especially after the disclosure of abuses and illegalities. Candidate Obama capitalized on this swing and portrayed himself as the champion of civil liberties. However, President Obama not only retained the controversial Bush policies, he expanded on them. The earliest, and most startling, move came quickly. Soon after his election, various military and political figures reported that Obama reportedly promised Bush officials in private that no one would be investigated or prosecuted for torture. In his first year,
Obama made good on that promise, announcing that no CIA employee would be prosecuted for torture. Later, his administration refused to prosecute any of the Bush officials responsible for ordering or justifying the program and embraced the “just following orders” defense for other officials, the very defense rejected by the United States at the Nuremberg trials after World War II. Obama failed to close Guantanamo Bay as promised. He continued warrantless
his captor despite the obvious threat to his existence. Even though many Democrats admit in private that they are shocked by Obama’s position on civil liberties, they are incapable of opposing him. Some insist that they are simply motivated by realism: A Republican would be worse. However, realism alone cannot explain the utter absence of a push for an alternative Democratic candidate or organized opposition to Obama’s policies on civil liberties in Congress during his term. It looks more like a cult

Ironically, had Obama been defeated in 2008, it is likely that an alliance for civil liberties might have coalesced and effectively fought the government’s burgeoning police powers. A Gallup poll released this week shows 49% of Americans, a record since the poll began asking this question in 2003, believe that “the federal government poses an immediate threat to individuals’ rights and freedoms.” Yet the Obama administration long ago made a cynical calculation that it already had such voters in the bag and tacked to the right on this issue to show Obama was not “soft” on terror. He assumed that, yet again, civil libertarians might grumble and gripe but, come election day, they would not dare stay home. This calculation may be wrong.
Obama may have flown by the failsafe line, especially when it comes to waterboarding. For many civil libertarians, it will be virtually impossible to vote for someone who has flagrantly ignored the Convention Against Torture or its underlying Nuremberg Principles. As Obama and Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. have admitted, waterboarding is clearly torture and has been long defined as such by both international and U.S. courts. It is not only a crime but a war crime. By blocking the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for torture, Obama violated international law and reinforced other countries in refusing investigation of their own alleged war crimes. The administration magnified the damage by blocking efforts of other countries like Spain from investigating our alleged war crimes. In this process, his administration shredded principles on the accountability of government officials and lawyers facilitating war crimes and further destroyed the credibility of the U.S. in objecting to civil liberties abuses abroad. In time, the election of Barack Obama may stand as one of the single most devastating events in our history for civil liberties. Now the president has begun campaigning for a second term. He will again be selling himself more than his policies, but he is likely to find many civil libertarians who simply are not buying. Whether you consider yourself a positive, easy-going person or a demanding, hard to please person, these tips can help you become a more grateful, caring, and content individual. There is much more to gratitude and Shukr (thankfulness) in Islam than a mere “Thank You” that our ears have become so used to ignoring. Discover how you can be more thankful to Allah and His creation. (1) Stop Complaining and be positive! This is the first step towards being thankful to Allah and people around you. We have become a community of complainers and whiners, which has lead to a collective psychology of negativity and unproductively. Stop complaining about the economy, weather, politicians, traffic, or ‘the system’. Refrain from blaming your Masjid, Imams, parents, spouse, in-laws, children, or boss. If you think with an open mind, you may find more positives in your circumstances and the people around you than negatives. (2) Say “Al-hamdulillah” (All thanks and praise belongs to Allah) often: A constant utterance of this phrase reminds you of the source of all blessings and happiness in this life. This practice of attributing all good actions to Allah keeps you humble and content and has a positive affect on your relations with people. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has instructed us to say “Al-hamdulillah” on daily basis: “Allah is pleased with His servant if, when he eats something he thanks Allah for it, and when he drinks something he thanks Allah for it” (Muslim). (3) Respect others’ time and schedule: Part of ungratefulness is wastage of time.
As a scholar once said, “Time is not just money. It is more expensive than gold, diamonds and pearls. Time is life itself!” Arriving late at a meeting or a class, cancelling appointments last minute, or starting off a program late, are not only a big waste of time and disrespectful to others, but also a lack of appreciation of others’ time on your part. (4) Seize the opportunity while you can. Procrastination in offering your prayers, delaying a donation to a humanitarian cause, or filling your leisure time with unproductive or unlawful activities is ingratitude to Allah for the limited time and opportunity He has given you to do good and to achieve Paradise. Prophet Muhammad warned us, “Good health and spare time are two of the blessings of Allah with respect to which many people are deceived.” (Bukhari) Even if you live till tomorrow, what guarantee do you have that there won’t be any obstacles in carrying out a good action. The Prophet used to call on Muslims to take the initiative to do good deeds before any problems arise. (5) Spend 15 minutes daily to think about things that you should be thankful for: Recall people in your life, whom you may have taken for granted like your parents, spouse, children, co-worker, or teacher, who were caring and loving. List some of Allah’s gifts that are not tangible or were not obvious to you before. Sulayman, a follower of the Prophet’s Companions, once said: “Remembering His blessings makes one love Allah.” This simple mental exercise not only makes you a grateful person, but also a healthy one. According to a 2001 research bythe Institute for Research on Unlimited Love (IRUL), based in Ohio, just 15 minutes a day focusing on the things you
are grateful for will significantly increase your body’s natural antibodies, will make you less vulnerable to clinical depression, and will keep your blood pressure and heart rate stable.

(6) Be patient and grateful when disasters strike: The depth and strength of your gratitude is tested in difficult times. Allah wants to see how thankful you truly are when you loose your job or a loved one, or when you feel ill and or get injured.
(9) Share the message of Islam: If you appreciate the guidance of Islam as your most precious treasure, don’t hesitate to share it with others. If Islam has changed your life for the better, what’s holding you back from inviting your friends, family, neighbours, and co-workers to explore this message of hope and positive transformation?
It helps to know that in times of calamity and distress, there will be some good for you, provided you respond appropriately. The Prophet said, “How wonderful is the case of a Believer! There is good for him in whatever happens to him -and none, apart from him, enjoys this blessing.” (Muslim) Sufyan al-Thawri, a famous early scholar of Islam, said, “He does not understand religion properly who does not count affliction as a blessing and ease as a trial.” (7) Donate your time, talent, money, and advice to social work and non-profit efforts: In our profit-driven culture, it is burdensome to squeeze out time and wealth for others. Your selfless service and generosity towards people in need and non-profit organizations is a sure way of showing gratitude to Allah and to your community. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him said, “People are dependants of Allah; the closest to Him are those who are most useful to His dependants” (Muslim). “As the blessings from Allah to a servant increase, so will the people’s needs of that blessed servant’s services. If the servant ignores their needs, it will cause those blessings to be removed” (lbn Hibban). (8) Visit the sick, the terminally ill, and the disabled: Frequenting patients and families of the deceased, not only brings
(10)Recite and memorize the Duas of Prophet Muhammad: The most natural and beautiful way to thank Allah is the words of the Prophet himself. The Prophet told Muadh, “By Allah, I love you, so do not forget to say at the end of every prayer, ‘O Allah, help me to remember You and to give thanks to You and to worship You well’” (Ahmad and At-Tirmidhî). (11) Fall in Prostration (Sajda) when you receive a blessing from Allah:Prophet Muhammad used to prostrate (Sajda) to Allah whenever he received something pleasant or was told good news to thank Allah for the grace he had received. (12) Don’t consider any blessing too small: Treat all gifts of Allah with equal respect and gratitude, lest you lose it one day for good. Aishah said that the Prophet entered upon her one day and saw a small piece of bread on the floor, so he picked it up and wiped it, then told her: “O Aishah, treat the blessings of Allah with respect, for when it departs from a household it may never come back to them” (Abud Dunya). An American Muslim Father’s Extra Mile
History
At the start of the 2010-2011 school year at al-huda school, the kindergarten girls teacher Sister Amber Qayyum made an appeal to parents to help fund a reading corner for the class. Sabriya Rashid had been at Al-Huda in preschool since 2006, and though her father Abdur Rashid and his Aminah were struggling financially they really wanted to support his daughter’s classroom. “Even parents whose funds are limited have faith and health that we can use to help. Do something!” Abdur Rashid told himself. So, he planned a personal bike-a-thon to help raise the $700 needed to fund the reading corner. Getting per-mile pledges from friends and co-workers, on October 11, 2010 he rode from AlHuda School in College Park, Maryland to a learning store in Alexandria, Virginia and back—using bike trails and secondary roads for a 75 mile round trip—and loaded a bike trailer with books from the store. Leaving at fajr, he returned at around 3pm to deliver the books to the class. He raised $1,462 – more than double what the class needed, alhumdulillah. This year he wants to contribute even more with a 235 mile bike-a-thon linking AlHuda School in Maryland and Al-Huda School in Pennsylvania.
Why A Bike-A-Thon? The Muslim community has many great projects going on that need continuous funding. With so many fundraising dinners and juma’ appeals being made, its easy for the community to get numb. Abdur Rashid says: “We wanted to introduce something fresh and new, something that will get people involved with more than just their checkbook. Bike-a-thons, marathons, and walk-a-thons are very successful in the United States, raising money in the millions for cancer research and other causes. This type of effort involving sacrifice, physical effort, and excitement is what we need for the Muslim community. A Bike-A-Thon will link us together and help us move forward together In Shaa Allah. Some of us can’t afford to donate cash, but we can give of our time, energy, and persistence. That’s what this ride is all about.”
Who is Abdur Rashid? Abdur Rashid is a 40-year old American Muslim who grew up in the local area and lives in Silver Spring, Maryland. He commutes to work at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda each morning by bike. He is not a professional athlete, and the Sabr Wins the Race Bike-A-Thon will be his longest bike ride ever. His daughter Sabriya attends first grade with Sister Shirin Ishaq at Al-Huda School and his wife Aminah is a 2011 UMD graduate. Abdur Rashid and his daughter Sabriya.
The Route Since it is dangerous and against the law to travel on highways, the route from Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland to Al-Huda School in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania will go through bike trails and secondary roads for a round trip total of 235 miles. Traffic and weather conditions will affect the time for both the going and coming legs of the route, but we estimate each leg will take 10-12 hours. We will only stop to use the bathroom and to make salah. We will eat high energy foods like honey and trail mix while biking, and of course plenty of water In Shaa Allah. Muslim Link (which is sponsoring the ride) staff will connect with us at checkpoints on the route to document the Bike-a-Thon and to make sure we are safe. We will leave College Park around midnight Friday, December 9 and aim to make juma’ prayer in Pennsylvania. We’ll sleep the night in Pennsylvania and then head out again around midnight, aiming to get back to College Park around thuhr time. We will track the ride live using a GPS device connected to our website, so In Shaa Allah all of our supporters can track the progress.

He asked me, ‘Do you have any possessions?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He asked me what sort, and I told him, ‘I have all sorts. of people; they may not like working with others. This insensitivity to other people’s preferences and inability to accommodate others is a sign of selfishness, arrogance, and ungratefulness. Be content in every situation and you will become grateful. (15) Admire those below you and keep your expectations low: A lot of times the reason for our ungrateful behaviour is that we are constantly comparing our material success with the wealthier, healthier, and more accomplished. In our race to ‘keepup-with-the-Ahmad-family’ next door, we forget so many obvious blessings that others may not enjoy and we should be thankful for. The Prophet admonished us, “Look at those people who have less than you and never look at those who have more grants than you, this will ensure that you will not depreciate Allah’s favours” (Muslim).
(16) Thank people for littlest things: People like to be appreciated for little favours they do for us, which often get ignored in our busy routines. When was the last time you thanked your little son for taking care of simple chore for you? Has your husband heard a compliment from you lately? Take the time to thank them for their thoughtfulness. As the Prophet stated, “The one who does not give thanks for a small blessing will not give thanks for a great blessing, and the one who does not give thanks to people will not give thanks to Allah” (Abud Dunya). (17) Compliments & recognition and motivate team members: Whether you are an employer or a manager at work, or lead a volunteer based project, or simply a team player, a personal recognition significantly boosts the employee or volunteer morale. As Stephen Robbins in his book “The
Truth about Managing People” explains, several organizational behaviour studies have indicated employees and volunteers rate personal thanks and recognition from a superior for a job well-done as the most motivating of a variety of incentives; yet not many team leaders use this simple, cost-effective technique that works like magic! What kinds of personal recognition and group success incentives does your organization have in place? (18) When you thank someone, make sure you mean it: When you say “Jazakallahu Khayran” (May Allah reward you the best) to your wife, does it come from your heart? Or is it received as another cold cliché? Be a little creative when you really want to express your gratitude to someone. Say it with a personal thank you card. Show it with flowers. Accompany it with a genuine smile. Charge it with emotions. Enhance it with a meal or a meaningful gift.
