MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS 2010 SEASON

Dear Music in the Mountains Friends, What a wonderful and supportive community we live in! Just listen to what we have experienced of late… We began the year with debt that we chalked up to a down economy over the past few years. We believed it would get better. In February, we succeeded in reducing a good portion of the debt, but then the “storm” began. The economy worsened. Our Executive Director resigned unexpectedly just before SummerFest, resulting in many projects having to be dropped or quickly covered by the Board and staff. We did our best. However, our donations were negatively affected, and SummerFest ticket sales came in 45% below projections (mostly due to the outdoor “headliner” concert attendance). We were forced into greater debt. Shortly after SummerFest, our Board of Directors had a special meeting. We were determined to focus on the reality of the tough situation. The Board, Gregory and staff took quick action: • • • •

We calculated that we needed $600,000 to get through 2010, pay off all debt, and go into 2011 with an operating cushion. We received an extremely generous 1:3 matching gift pledge of $150,000 – but only if we first raised the other $450,000. The Board members stepped up to “give or get” $10,000 each. So did Gregory. We immediately took strong steps to reduce spending and streamline operations.

As we write this in early October, the results to date are as follows: • • • • • • •

The budget for the balance of 2010 has been greatly reduced. We are negotiating lower-cost contracts with vendors. We are very close to finding a solution to dramatically lower our office costs. The 2011 budget is now projected to be less than $700,000 instead of the million dollar plus budgets of the last few years. We have to reduce the number of concerts to match the support we can receive from our audience and donors. But we will preserve our musical excellence while preventing audience fatigue. We have received surprising new levels of help from volunteers and generous donors. We launched a Special Campaign to raise the $450,000 needed to earn the $150,000 matching funds. We have received $300,000 to date, or two-thirds of our goal. Our supporters have been like coaches, urging us to get this done with comments like “MIM is a community treasure” and “Your exceptional classical music education programs must continue.”

The first few words in this letter were about our wonderful and supportive community. We’re sure you will agree after reading the above. After all, Music in the Mountains wouldn’t exist without you and your gifts of time, talent and treasure. By the time you read this in December at WinterFest, we expect to have many more accomplishments to report, such as our Campaign results and exciting plans for our 30th season celebration in 2011. When you see us at the Concerts, please ask us for an update!

Concert Notes

Christmas Joy - by Mark Hayes, choral composer/pianist born in Wisconsin in 1953. He has had his works performed in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Ave Maris Stella - “Hail Star of the Ocean” is Trond Kverno’s beautifully complex choral masterpiece. He weaves a six note tranquil repeating theme, then a dynamic and confrontational interlude followed by the six note theme…stunning! Kverno was born in Oslo in 1945 and is a prolific composer, noted organist and pedagogue. He is a member of the commission to reform the liturgy of the Church of Norway. All My Heart This Night Rejoices - Dan Locklair, nationally recognized composer and organist, is currently Composer in Residence at Wake Forest University. O Magnum Mysterium - “Oh, Great Mystery” is a polyphonic gem by Tomas Luis de Victoria, Spanish composer and organist. Written in 1570, it celebrates the miraculous birth of Christ. Other 16th century composers writing on this theme were William Byrd, Thomas Tallis and Giovanni Palestrina…and more recently Olivier Messiaen and Seattle’s prolific Morten Lauridsen. Gloria - London born, John Rutter is a prolific composer/arranger, widely performed in his native England and well recognized internationally. His Gloria, a landmark choral work, was premiered in 1974, about the same time he became Director of Music at his alma mater, Clare College at Cambridge University. In 1981, he formed the Cambridge Singers and recorded many of his commissions and arrangements. A few years ago, he wrote Birthday Madrigal for the great jazz pianist George Shearing, and he is currently working on a cello concerto for Julian Lloyd Webber. Rutter also feels that he has a Broadway musical lurking somewhere inside his creative self. The next four carols celebrate songs from around the world. Fanfare for Christmas Day by English choral composer Martin Shaw is included in the “Songs of Praise” collection he edited with Ralph Vaughn Williams. Next is Huron Carol, Canada’s oldest Christmas carol, arranged by Paul Aitken. Fum, Fum, Fum, a 16th century Catalan Carol arranged by Robert Shaw precedes Ave Maria by Bavarian choral composer Franz Biebl (1906-2000) - one of the favorites of Chanticleer. Hannukah Blessings is by Oregon composer and choral music publisher Ron Jeffers (b. 1943), Emeritus Professor of Music at Oregon State University. In 1993, Eddie Pola (1907-1995) wrote The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a hit song recorded by Andy Williams on his first Christmas album. Christmas Ornaments is an extensive collection of familiar carols written in 1953 by Randol Alan Bass whose works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood and the by Boston Pops. We Wish You a Merry Christmas - arranged by (whom else?) John Rutter.

CONCERT NOTES

WHAT IS IT ABOUT CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY MUSIC? Is it the celebratory feeling in the air? Is it those moments of quietude and introspection? Is it joining with others in songs of praise and carols of joy? Whatever it is, it’s happening tonight at HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. Personent Hodie (Proclaim the Day!) is part of Christmas Ornaments, an extensive collection of familiar carols written by Randall Allen Bass in 1953. His works have been performed at the Boston Pops and Carnegie Hall and by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Tanglewood Chorus.

Toys are for kids (and grown ups too!) wagons dolls Breyer horses stuffed animals board games Webkinz puzzles trucks dress up clothes

Next we hear Ding Dong Merrily on High, a 16th century French carol, and then Hark the Herald Angels Sing, with words by Charles Wesley in 1739 and later, in 1840, music adapted from Felix Mendelssohn. Turning to contemporary songs, we hear the classic White Christmas by Irving Berlin and The Christmas Song, with its familiar opening line of “Chestnuts roasting by an open fire” by Mel Torme and music by Robert Wells. A vintage 18th century English carol with origins in Cornwall is next, The First Nowell. A Musicological Journey through the twelve days of Christmas is an odyssey of holiday melody by Craig Courtney. A classically trained musician and former member of the Salzburg Mozarteum music faculty, Courtney is an active choral conductor and prolific composer residing in Ohio. Deck the Halls, a very old Welsh carol, and Carol of the Bells, an early 20th century Ukrainian carol, are traditional favorites. O Holy Night (Cantique de Noel) was written in 1847 by Adolphe Adam, the composer that created the wonderful ballet music for “Giselle”. In 1895, W.J. Kirkpatrick supplied the music to Away in a Manger with the words originating from a Lutheran Sunday School book, contrary to the early rumor that Martin Luther wrote the original verses.

MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS 2010 SEASON

Concert Notes

Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) A Bohemian Voice - The lyricism of folk melodies infuses much of Dvořák’s composing, from dances and rhapsodies to his symphonies and tone poems. His first major effort as a composer was in 1873, with a cantata, The Heirs of the White Mountains. Two years later, he won the Austrian State Prize and then twice again in 1877, bringing him the unqualified support of Brahms and firmly establishing his credentials among music publishers. The following year, he wrote Bagatelles, Op. 47, a spirited five movement work that prompted Brahms to say, “I should be glad if something occurred to me as a main idea that occurs to Dvořák only by the way.” Johannes was sooo modest! Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) Conversations - Among piano and wind and strings, they start out in a declamatory and paced way and then end in the last movement’s instrumental argument – so goes Concertino. Creative tempi and well stated dissonances with overall tonality - are truly late period Janáček. The last decade of his life generated works that had little in common with the Czech romantic style of fellow Bohemians Dvořák and Smetena. Might his Concertino seem like a preamble to the works of Hungarian neighbor, Bèla Bartók? Janáček’s early life was musically oriented, as you would expect, with brief stays at the Leipzig and Vienna Conservatories where he demonstrated his high expectations but low levels of patience. To his Conservatory professors, he was a rebellious student. However, when he had students of his own, he was considered authoritarian in the extreme, which was not particularly surprising. In addition to critically acclaimed orchestral, chamber and choral works, he composed twelve operas, four of which are in the current repertory: Jenůfa, Kát’a Kabanova’, The Makropulos Case and The Cunning Little Vixen. Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) A First for Johannes – His first venture into orchestral music was the Serenade No. 1 in D (1858), and up to that point he had written a piano trio, some piano pieces and lieder. The Serenade began life as a wind nonet (nine instruments) in three movements; strings were added later. Even later, Clara Schumann suggested a full orchestral version and, being in love wth her, Johannes naturally obliged. This evening’s arrangement (a reconstruction of the second version by Hungarian composer-conductor Zsolt Serei) is a double quintet – five strings and five winds. Shortly after this came Serenade No. 2, which, like No. 1, is a look back at the serenade form so effectively used by Haydn and Mozart, but with Brahmsian touches. For the next few years, Johannes conducted various musical groups and worked on his compositional strengths. In 1868 and now living in Vienna, he hit the creative jack-pot with his German Requiem (recently performed by Symphony Silicon Valley conducted by our own Gregory Vajda.) In 1869, his immensely popular first book of Hungarian Dances made its appearance. He was on solid creative ground, and Vienna loved him. The rest is history… Jack Roberts

Maurice Ravel (1875-1939) Ethereal - That is the operative word for Ravel’s Introductions and Allegro, an incredible blending of instrumental colors that features the harp interwoven with flute, clarinet and strings. Written in 1905 shortly after leaving the Paris Conservatory, it marks the time that his creative juices really started flowing. But now, let’s take a brief look at what made Maurice tick. Abundantly endowed with musical talent, he entered the Conservatory in 1889 at age 14. A few years later, he left, but returned in 1897. For the next four years he unsuccessfully competed for the Prix de Rome (the top award for composition). He tried again in 1905 but was denied admission for flagrantly disregarding academic rules. He was irritated in the extreme! He was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1920 for his contributions to musical literature. He refused to accept it, still upset about the Prix de Rome debacle. About his life he stated, “The only love affair I have ever had was with music!” Luciana Berio (1925-2003) Not “Oh, Susannah” – A bit more complex is Berio’s Folksongs. This is a lilting, modal song cycle with subtle touches of Scotland and Appalachia, and with shifting European tonal patterns mixed in. Written in 1964 and dedicated to mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian, it uses folk melodies and some “folk-like” songs – two by Berio and two from French composer Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne. After graduating from the Milan Conservatory, Berio married Berberian and, shuttling between the U.S. and Europe, studied with Dallapiccola, Boulez, Stockhausen, Ligeti and Nono. With this impressive avant-garde background, he returned to the U.S. and held faculty positions at Tanglewood, Mills College and the Juilliard School. He was Distinguished Composer in Residence at Harvard from 1994 to 2000, after which he returned to Rome. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) A New Direction – To many composers, Debussy seemed to establish a path away from Romanticism and into new tonal colors and dynamic dimensions of natural images. His music style was intensely personal and distinctive, as was his piano technique. The Petite Suite is unique, in that it is a look back at the French Romantic period that preceded him, rather than a continuing evolution of his style. Enjoy – and paint your own mental pictures! Manuel de Falla (1976-1946) Nationalism – Music often has that ‘sound’ – a defining temporal and geographic statement. De Falla fine tuned the foundations set by Albeniz and Granados, and in 1905 wrote his prize winning opera, La Vida Breve. Then it was off to Paris and contacts with Dukas, Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky. On his return, he wrote El amour brujo (Love, the Magician), based on an Andalusian Gypsy tale in which a young woman’s current love life is interrupted by the ghost of her former lover. Talk about a wet blanket on a hot affair! All this and the Ritual Fire Dance too. Way to go, Manuel!

TESTIMONIAL Dear Shirley, We are very appreciative of the work you did on our behalf in the one and a half year process to purchase our beautiful new home. You were extraordinarily patient and yet very determined in your negotiations with the seller and his realtors. We always felt you had our best interests at heart. You have now helped us buy three different properties and sell two other ones. We couldn't recommend another Realtor more highly. Steve & Nancy Murphy

MIM—A History The first Music in the Mountains Summer Festival took place in June of 1982 after 14 months of planning. Originally operating under the auspices of City Opera, a nonprofit corporation founded in 1978 in San Francisco by Paul Perry and Terry Brown to perform little known works of opera, the purpose of City Opera was changed to produce a Summer Festival called Music in the Mountains (MIM). Utilizing the local volunteer chorus, the Golden Chain Chorale, already under the direction of Paul Perry, as the core of the Festival, professional musicians were hired from orchestras throughout the United States. In 1985, the corporate name was changed from City Opera to Music in the Mountains, and the Golden Chain Chorale was renamed the Festival Chorale. In the 1994-95 season, the chamber concerts were consolidated into two “mini-fests” – two series in Fall and Spring. The Holiday Choral concerts were always a part of the schedule presented in December. In 2009, our new Artistic Director and Conductor, Gregory Vajda, combined the Fall and Holiday concerts to present a WinterFest series in December. MIM is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. An organized volunteer support group responsible for hospitality and benefit events, Allegro Alliance, was formed in 1987. With founding Artistic Director and Conductor Paul Perry’s retirement in August 2008, an extensive search process that included past and present board members, orchestra principals, chorus and audience input overwhelmingly chose Gregory Vajda as MIM’s new Artistic Director and Conductor in July 2009.
