Moshe Tamir 1924-2004 Moshe Tamir was born in Odessa and died in Jerusalem. Between 'there' and 'here' he created a new world of personal, artistic and cosmopolitan language that possessed an extraordinary power to touch many places on the globe and transform Tamir into something immortal and universal, as well as one of the most important and respected artists in the world. His works are featured in various prestigious international collections, such as the collections of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and Queen Silvia of Sweden, private collections of Christina Newburgh, Simon Guttman and Henry Marcus, as well as in leading museums and permanent exhibitions. In his life, as in his work, Tamir was totally devoted to his goals. He finished his studies at the Bezalel Academy of Art in 1947 and won the Struck Award given to him by Mordechai Ardon. In 1952, Tamir graduated cum laude from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he specialized in fresco and monumental painting, and was chosen by his teacher, the renowned fresco artist Prozzo Parchi, to become his assistant in painting murals at the St. Eugene church in Rome. Working closely with a prominent figure in the art of fresco painting, greatly contributed to Tamir’s professional development, and he was one of the few who knew the secrets of the fresco painting techniques. One of Tamir’s masterpieces – a magnificent fresco “Amnon Wounded”, which is a part of a permanent exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum – earned him an honorable citation at the Venice Biennale.

In 1954 Tamir moved to the Montparnasse quarter of Paris, where he lived and worked for seven years alongside Constantin Brâncuşi, Jean Tinguely and Jean Dubuffet. Tamir deepened his studies once more and graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Soon, the doors began to open before him. In 1958 he exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and was voted one of the top twenty young artists in Europe. Following this exhibition Tamir was invited to paint monumental frescoes in Chicago, followed by Mexico City, where he painted huge murals.

Between 1956 and 1986, he was invited to present four exhibitions at the Palais des Beaux-Arts museum in Brussels, including a joint exhibition with Pablo Picasso. The opening of the 1986 exhibition hosted many important guests, among which were King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola, the Belgian Prime Minister, ministers of the Belgian Parliament and heads of the European community. The newspapers headlines called him a ‘Renaissance Man'. His works were extensively covered and he was repeatedly invited to various TV shows to discuss his unique work. Tamir won first prize for an artistic lithography at the Sao Paulo Biennale, and his works are on a permanent display at the Rio de Janeiro Museum till today. He published several albums of lithographs, and for the last album, the celebrated poet Mario Lucci dedicated three poems, written especially for the occasion. In 1999, the publisher and curator Guy Pieters published in Brussels a comprehensive book of two hundred and thirty pages describing Tamir’s paintings and sculptures. Many well-known professors and heads of art faculties participated in the writing of this book. The famous art critic Stephane Rey wrote in the book: “Tamir is an artist, but also a thinker, thorough and educated. His works made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century, and he gathers around him more and more art lovers all the time. He is contemporary, cosmopolitan and unique”. Tamir’s works reflect his life. He began with oil paintings of Independence, followed by monumental frescoes, drawings and gouache paintings that earned him a Young Artist Award in Israel. Later, during his stay in Paris, he developed the so-called “New Figuration” – paintings crammed with shapes and mythological images in thick, colorful and intoxicating layers of paint. However, throughout the years Tamir managed to preserve his personal and unique language, without surrendering to passing fashions. Moshe Tamir left a legacy of groundbreaking and sensitive works that speak through a wealth of color and texture. Indeed a prophet with honor in his town.
