WICKED BOLD

VEGAN KITCHEN

It's all about family at Flower Mound's newest vegan establishment, Wicked BOLD Vegan Kitchen. Owners Deric and Brooklynn Cahill named the restaurant after their family members - Brooklynn, Ophelia, Landon, & Deric. And they began their vegan journey after they learned their daughter couldn't eat animal products like cheese and eggs.

Back in Florida, they started out with making vegan chocolate out of their apartment. And when they moved here to DFW, they decided to expand their chocolate business and also open up a vegan restaurant where they can share some of their favorite vegan products and recipes with the community.

We were able to sample quite a few things from their kitchen menu, including: Their guacamole flight, which comes with three types of guacamole — including a chocolate guacamole. Yes, you read that right. And yes, it is surprisingly delicious!

We also tried their popular Italian Sandwich made with vegan pastrami, capicola, pepperoni, and American cheese topped with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and spices. You'll be surprised how much this tastes like a meat-lover’s Italian sandwich!

We also got to sample one of their new bowls - the Texasmexus made with black beans, avocado, tomato, basil, sprouts and served with a side of salsa, tortilla strips, and jalapeños.

Then to top it all off, we finished up with their famous tabletop S'mores complete with some of their own signature chocolate and a tabletop fire pit so you can roast those marshmallows to perfection. In addition to being a vegan kitchen, Wicked BOLD is also a sober bar, getting creative mixing up cocktails without the alcohol. Some of the mocktails you can try at their bar include a Smoked Rosemary Palo, a Cucumber Fizz, and a Chocolate Whiskey.

It was fun to see so many people coming in to experience Wicked BOLD for the first time while we were there, and we can't wait to see their continued success here in our community. So, whether you are an experienced vegan or you're just curious what eating vegan looks like, we'd love for you to head to Wicked BOLD soon to meet Brooklynn and Deric and their family. Our moods were instantly lifted by walking into their restaurant and talking with them, and we know that yours will be too!

A New

LOCATION

by Steve Gamel | photography by Your Candid Memories (YourCandidMemories.com)

Kevin Lively still feels like he hit the jackpot when he opened Mrs. Lively’s Cajun Konnection three years ago in Lake Dallas. Not only could he honor his late grandmother, Edith Lively, and mother, Judy, for teaching him the ways of southern cuisine, but his bayou-inspired menu gave this fishing community the Cajun kick it desperately needed.

...New Orleans and Mardi Gras-inspired decor that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the heart of the bayou...

So what can you give such a wildly popular restaurant that seemingly has everything it needs?

How about more visibility, easier access and triple the seating room.

That’s exactly what Mrs. Lively’s has now that it has moved from Lake Dallas to nearby 1400 N. Corinth St. in Corinth. The new 3,850 square-foot location opened on August 10 across the street from NCTC. It boasts triple the seating capacity compared to the original location and a revamped look that includes live entertainment, both inside and on the outdoor patio, a bar, New Orleans and Mardi Gras-inspired decor that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the heart of the bayou, and an expanded menu with items that’ll make your tastebuds do cartwheels in your mouth. And if that were not enough Louisiana inspired ambiance, there’s even a grand

piano to add a snapshot into Louisiana’s nightlife.

And the best part? The original location isn’t going away. While closed for the time being, Kevin plans to reopen the Lake Dallas spot under the new name, Mrs. Lively’s Catfish Whole.

That means there are TWO Mrs. Lively’s restaurants in the Lake Cities.

“From the moment I shared that I had the keys to this new place two and a half months ago, our social media has been blowing up,” Kevin said. “We have people telling us, ‘You’re so close to our house now.’ Had it not been for Lake Dallas, there’s no way we would have had the opportunity to do what we’re doing. But now we have more exposure.”

It’s hard to argue against the fact that Mrs. Lively’s has been a hidden gem for far too long. To get to the original location, patrons needed to exit the highway and travel all the way down Hundley Drive through the neighborhoods as if they were going to Willow Grove Park or the marina. If you didn’t know Mrs. Lively’s was back there, you’d miss it.

COMING SOON SAT & SUN BRUNCH

Mrs. Lively’s is a full-tilt taste of the bayou Louisiana kitchen with an amazing variety of made-from-scratch Cajun meals that will satisfy any pallet.

Granted, Kevin’s amazing menu was reason enough to help people find his restaurant, but that didn’t change the fact that one of the more common statements besides, “This food is delicious,” was “We had no idea you were here. How long have you been here?”

He won’t have that problem with the new location, as it is right off I-35 centrally located for existing and new customers.

“The amount of exposure is going to be tremendous,” he said.

And the food is still out of this world. Mrs. Lively’s is a full-tilt taste of the bayou Louisiana kitchen with an amazing variety of made-from-scratch Cajun meals that will satisfy any pallet. Every dish, whether it be their gumbo, crawfish, alligator ball basket, blackened fish, or boiled shrimp,

is prepared daily with fresh ingredients and cooked with only the finest signature spices.

And let’s not forget about their mouthwatering desserts like pecan cobbler, buttermilk pie, and bread pudding.

Kevin only cooks up the best because that’s what Edith and Judy taught him from the time he was three years old. It was at that tender age that young Kevin would stand eagerly in a straightback chair in front of the stove in his grandmother’s modest Louisiana kitchen and help her cook several of her many famous Cajun recipes.

They’d do everything from fry eggs and prepare out-of-this-world gumbo, shrimp, and jambalaya to bake homemade biscuits and desserts. The smells and soulful flavors from that kitchen are still strong in Kevin’s mind and heart today.

“They had the big bowls – you’d sift the flour, work the dough, and pinch the biscuits off. I remember doing all of that.”

...there’s even a grand piano to add a snapshot into Louisiana’s nightlife.

Just hearing Kevin talk proves how much cooking and owning his own restaurant in a way that honors his family upbringing means to him. His goal is simply to offer a welcoming place where a family can come in and get a good meal, friends can enjoy each other’s company, and couples can dress up and come for a date night.

“People travel from everywhere just to eat with us. That means a lot to me,” he said.
