El retiro del Papa Luna.
El casco histórico de Peñíscola sobre una península rocosa representa una de las postales más famosas de la costa valenciana, y constituye uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de la provincia de Castellón. En su punto más elevado destaca el castillo templario, hoy sede cultural y excelente mirador sobre el Mediterráneo. En sus 700 años de existencia ha sido testigo de la particular historia de Peñíscola, ligada a la figura del Papa Luna, Benedicto XIII de Aviñón, quien estuvo refugiado en la fortaleza hasta su muerte durante el denominado “Cisma de Occidente”.

Perched high on a rocky peninsula, Peniscola’s historic quarter offers a postcard-perfect picture of the Valencian coast that has made it one of the top tourist destinations in the province of Castellón. Its history is dominated by the 700-year-old Templar castle found at the highest point of the town. The castle was the refuge of Benedict XIII of Avignon, who sheltered in the fort during the so-called Western Schism. Today, the castle acts as a cultural venue and offers excellent views over the Mediterranean.
