History Following the American Revolution, the Northwest Territory was created in 1783. From this territory, the boundaries of states were portioned off and recreated into their own territories. The Indiana Territory was created in 1800, named for the plethora of Native American cultures present in the land. Roughly, “Indiana” meant “land of the Indians.” Delaware County was formed in 1827. It was named for the Delaware, a Native American people who then still inhabited the area. The Delaware were moved to new lands west of the Mississippi River in the 1840s. David Conner was the first white settler, arriving in the early 1810s. Muncie itself was formed in 1865 as a largely agricultural settlement comprised of pioneers and other early settlers. The first discovery of natural gas in Indiana occurred in 1876 in the town of Eaton. A company was drilling in search of coal, and when they had reaching a depth of sixhundred feet, there was a loud noise and foul smelling fumes began coming from the well. After a brief investigation, it was decided they had breached the ceiling of Hell, and the hole was quickly filled in. In 1884, when natural gas was discovered in nearby Ohio, people recalled the incident. They returned to the spot and opened Indiana’s first natural gas well. The gas was so abundant and strong that when the well was lit, the flames could be seen from Muncie. The east central Indiana and western portion of west central Ohio became known as the Trenton Gas Field. The Trenton Gas Field brought an increase of business to Muncie, including the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company, which moved its base of operations from Buffalo, New York, to Muncie in 1887. The Gas Boom and the Ball Brothers were instrumental in the growth of Muncie through industry and burgeoning commercialism. The population of Muncie quadrupled in twenty years following the Gas Boom, from a little over five thousand in 1880 to over twenty thousand citizens in 1900. Pottery Delaware County has a rich history of potters and pottery, dating back to the early days of Ball Corporation. Potters were needed in the production of huge vessels in which the glass ingredients were melted. In their spare time, the story goes, the men made home-sized pottery. Fast-forward to 2015, and Delaware County still has a healthy number of working potters. Ball Five brothers founded Ball in 1880 with a $200 loan from their Uncle George. In the beginning, they made wood-jacketed tin cans for products like paint and kerosene, but soon expanded their offerings to glass- and tin-jacketed containers. In 1884, the brothers began making glass home-canning jars, the product that established Ball as a household name. The brothers-Edmund, Frank, George, Lucius and William-moved the company from Buffalo, New York to Muncie, Indiana, in 1887 to take advantage of abundant natural gas reserves essential to making glass. Ball grew rapidly in the ensuing decade and has been in more than 45 businesses since its founding. Ball no longer manufactures the ubiquitous canning jars, but have expanded and grown into a worldwide metal packaging company that makes billions of recyclable metal containers, and a unique aerospace business that designs one-of-a-kind solutions to answer scientific and technical challenges. INDIANA ARTISAN Indiana Artisan identifies, recognizes and promotes exceptional works of art and food created by Hoosier artists. It is an official, state-sanctioned designation for work of the highest caliber, with applications reviewed annually. Different panelists are engaged in each of the two annual reviews, and art panelists include artists, collectors, gallery owners and managers, folklorists, museum curators and directors, art educators, retailers, and others with an appreciation of fine art and craft. One criterion of particular importance is the work’s relationship to the Hoosier State. The work of successful applicants is “juried in” to Indiana Artisan, meaning it becomes part of the Indiana Artisan brand and the artist may take advantage of the organization’s business development opportunities. Currently the work of 296 Artisans in 63 Indiana counties is part of the brand, and Delaware County is home to nine Indiana Artisans. Since the organization’s launch in 2008, more than 1,400 applications have been reviewed, with fewer than 20 percent successfully “jurying in.”

INDIANA GLASS TRAIL Delaware County embraces the Indiana Glass Trail. The trail is a showcase for talented Hoosier artisans and glass blowers that create magic with glass. The trail connects communities in which the tradition and history of glass and glass artisans can be experienced first hand. MINNETRISTA In 1887, the Ball family moved its glass manufacturing business from Buffalo, New York to Muncie. Ball Brothers Glass Company became one of America’s best known manufacturers of canning jars. The Ball family purchased most of the land along the north bank of White River between Wheeling and Granville pikes in 1893. The name chosen by the family for the property was taken from a Sioux word, “mna” (pronounced mini) which means “water,” and combined with the English word, “tryst,” to form “Minnetrista,” or, “a gathering place by the water.” The origin of Minnetrista dates back to 1978, when Margaret Ball Petty wrote to her cousin Edmund F. Ball, suggesting that the Ball Brothers Foundation provide a museum in which to exhibit fine art. Learn more at www.minnetrista.net

Bloss
In September, 1862, Union soldiers camped near Frederick, Maryland. During their stay, Private Barton Mitchell and Sergeant John Bloss found several cigars wrapped in paper. The paper was an order detailing the movement of the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee. It went up the chain of command until it reached General George McClellan, who reportedly exclaimed, “Now I know what to do! Here is a paper with which, if I cannot whip Bobby Lee, I will be willing to go home.� Now, here is the connection to Muncie. After the war, John Bloss, who was a graduate of Hanover College, was superintendent of Muncie schools for a while. He later became President of Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University). After he retired, he and his family moved to a farm near Muncie. He is buried in Beech Grove Cemetery. Cornerstone History (Former Masonic Temple) This Gothic Revival building is the third Masonic Temple for the Masons in Muncie. Construction on the building began in 1920 and finished in 1926 at a cost of approximately $1 million. Prominent local architect Cuno Kibele was commissioned for the project. In addition, nationally recognized artist Gustav S. Brand created twenty-two murals for the interior spaces. The six stories are divided into three levels, each a double story. The first level contains a banquet hall and auditorium, which were intended for use of the community. The second and third levels were reserved for the various Masonic lodges. Throughout the nearly 75 years of this buildings use, most of the original character defining exterior and interior features remain unaltered. The foundation for the Masonic Temple was poured in 1921, but plans were stopped and revised with the donation of $150,000 from the Ball brothers for the incorporation of a public auditorium in the building. Frank C. Ball, in his memoirs, stated that the brothers had discussed upon several occasions providing an auditorium for Muncie where entertainments of a high order could be found. With the construction of the new temple, they felt that they had found a good organization to oversee such a facility. The beautiful building has since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now home to Cornerstone Center for the Arts and welcomes 90,000 visitors through its door annually. Presently, the arts programming has over 1,000 students enrolled annually. Cornerstone has made efforts to reach individuals of all races, ages, cultures and socio-economic levels through arts programming, family-friendly special events and by serving as landlord to other local groups, mostly artsrelated organizations. IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital In the late 1800s, the five Ball brothers from Buffalo, NY moved their business to Muncie. The eldest of the brothers, Edmond B. Ball, had a keen interest in improving the quality of health care in Muncie, and when he died in 1925, his will established that Ball Brothers Foundation and provided the funding for a modern, public hospital. Because it was to be a teaching hospital, primarily for training nurses, locating it across from the local college was a logical choice. Ground was broken in 1927 and the main structure was completed and opened in August of 1929. The hospital has grown in size and complexity to meet the needs of the community. By the 1970s it had become a regional referral center for East Central Indiana. The North Tower opened in 1979 and in 2009 the South Tower and John W. Fisher Heart Center opened. Today the original structure is gone and replaced with modern facilities in order to provide the best in healthcare services to the communities they serve.

BALL STATE
HISTORY Ball State’s tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship is rooted in the late 19th century, when Muncie business leaders envisioned a local college to help boost the city’s development. Among the visionaries were Frank C. Ball and his brothers, young New York industrialists who moved to Muncie looking to expand their glass container business. A small, private teacher training school opened in 1899. After the community’s efforts to sustain the college failed, the Ball brothers purchased the land and buildings of the defunct institution and donated them to the State of Indiana. This gift became the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division, which opened in 1918 to meet Indiana’s need for more and better teachers. In recognition of the Ball family’s generosity, the Indiana General Assembly changed the school’s name to Ball Teachers College in 1922 and then Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The winged statue Beneficence stands on the campus as a tribute to the family. This and other landmarks from Ball State’s early years are featured in our historical walking tour of the Old Quadrangle.
Growing a University
By the 1960s, the regional teachers college had begun to attract faculty from outside the Midwest, and students sought majors in areas such as business, architecture, and other emerging disciplines. Enrollment and funding surged with national trends, and new facilities and degree offerings were added. In 1965, the Indiana General Assembly renamed the college Ball State University, acknowledging its phenomenal growth in enrollment and facilities, the variety and quality of its educational programs and services, and the anticipation of the broader role it would play in the state’s future.

Today, Ball State’s entrepreneurial spirit continues to shine through numerous expansions and additions of degree offerings, technological resources, immersive learning opportunities, community outreach projects, and state-ofthe-art facilities. These investments are preparing bright students to take advantage of current and emerging job opportunities, meet society’s most pressing needs, and serve the communities in which they will live and work. White River Greenway is a six-mile paved asphalt trail following the river through Muncie’s city center. It resides on city-owned land, but is managed by Cardinal Greenway, Inc. Freddy It was August 9, 1953 and there was a record crown in Akron, Ohio for the All-American Soap Box Derby. Freddy Mohler, a 14 year old, from Muncie, Indiana had traveled to the derby in hopes of winning and he did just that. He was about to run in the final heat for the championship that day but didn’t even realize it. He thought there was still one more heat to go. To his surprise he won the world championship! Soap Box Derby racing was quite popular in 1953 and Freddy became an instant icon. He took a victory ride in the first Corvette ever made, he appeared on two television shows and received a hero’s welcome home where the mayor of Muncie presented him with a key to the city and the governor of Indiana visited his home. “All the dreams I’ve ever had have come true,” he said in 1988. “I have the derby to thank for that.” Freddy passed away at age 75 in 2014.

Kemp Machine Works Kemp Machine Works (later known as B-K Machine), founded 1905, was a mainstay for machine services for local industries and for automotive applications and was in business for 100 years in Muncie. They began the business about the same time that inventors began putting noisy gasoline engines in new-fangled automobiles. Originally located on South Liberty Street it later moved to 1215 South Franklin Street. In addition to general machining jobs Kemp was working on designing and building engines for aircraft about six years after the Wright Brother’s historic 1903 flight. One motor by Kemp is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute and the Oregon State Museum. By the end of WWI Kemp slowed production of aircraft engines. The Muncie Aero Club was formed in 1912 and George Kemp served as president. Kemp had been interested in airplanes since the early flights in 1903 and he even knew Orville Wright. Much like the automobile, airplanes came from carriage and blacksmith shops and have grown into the great industry we know today. The Aero club tested small planes which only rose 5 to 6 feet off the ground on a small field at the intersection of Country Club Road and Highway 32. In 1918 Muncie seen the first real airplane flight ever over the city. In 1925 the South Hackley Street Airport was dedicated. This land is now a residential area. Then in September of 1932 the Muncie Airport was dedicated. Want to learn more about aviation history? Appeal to the Great Spirit The statue, owned by the City of Muncie, is a memorial to Edmund B. Ball. After his death in 1925, his family searched for a suitable memorial to him. They settled on a replica of the “Appeal to the Great Spirit” cast in bronze and erected on a site just east of the Ball family homes on the north side of the White River in Muncie. The original sculpture was created by Cyrus Dallin in 1909 and is a Plains Indian. The statue and surrounding park were dedicated in 1929. The Myth of the Chief The statue at Granville and Walnut Avenues “Appeal to the Great Spirit” by sculptor Cyrus Dallin is an iconic symbol for our great city. Many refer to the man on the horse as Chief Munsee. But, the Indian depicted did not live in this area, the Indians of this area were Woodland Indians, and the city of Muncie isn’t named for that same non-existent chief. Roller Polo “Roller polo” was a hockey game which developed into a popular league sport in several Midwestern cities in the 1880s. Muncie had roller polo teams by 1885 and it was so popular it became a high school sport. The glory days of this fad ended in the 1890s. Muncie was well known for the manufacturing of roller skates. Mr. Thad A. Nelly, of Muncie, held a patent for what was known as the “Muncie Roller Skate”.

Moore-Youse Home Museum When Mary (Youse) Maxon died in 1982, she left her house and its contents to the Delaware County Historical Society, with the provision that the organization establish and maintain a museum of Delaware County History on the premises. The Moore-Youse house became a home museum, and the Heritage Library Resource Center was established next door. Three generations of MooreYouse women and their families lived in the house. Each of them added to the exceptional mix of furniture, china, linens, and other household items, endowing the home with its own unique charm. A number of paintings by Muncie artist J. Ottis Adams also decorate the walls. Rebecca Hackley originally owned the land on which the house was built, having been given 672 acres by the U.S. government for work done by her father, William Wells. William was the adopted son of Miami Indian Chief Little Turtle. The house was built in 1849, by Anderson Carter, who purchased the land from Daniel H. Andrews and his wife, Mary Jane Gilbert. Mary Jane was the daughter of Goldsmith Gilbert, founder of Munseytown (Muncie). The house first came into the Moore family after Samuel Porter Wilson purchased the two-story structure in April of 1864. Two months later he sold it to his daughter, Clara Jane (Wilson) Moore. The Moore’s enlarged the four-room house in the 1870′s to better accommodate their growing family. They added an entry hall, dining room, kitchen, an upstairs bathing area, a sitting room, and another bedroom. Porches appeared after 1883. When Clara died in 1904, she left the house to her daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Moore) Youse, a.k.a. Mame. When Mame died in 1943, she left the house to her daughter Mary (Youse) Maxon. The Hemingray Glass Company The Hemingray Glass Company was founded by Robert Hemingray and Ralph Gray in 1848 Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1888 the company announced it start production in Muncie, Indiana. By 1890 they were operational. They are well known for being the largest manufacturer of glass insulators. Fire struck the Muncie plant on June 18, 1892 and the factory had to be rebuilt. By 1911 they were running at least four furnaces seven days a week. During the 1920s machines started taking the place of people. Rather than lose employees Hemingray began to make other items such as bottles. The 1930s brought the great depression. In 1933 Hemingray was bought by Owens-Illinois. This was the same year prohibition was repealed which meant more demand for bottles but the deal to sell had already been made. In 1937 the one billionth Hemingray insulator was made. From 1948 to 1951 the Hemingray division of Owens-Illinois was known as American Structural Products. It became the Kimble division of Owens-Illinois in 1952. In the 1950s the demand for insulators started to decline. In the 1960s they started production of face plates for televisions. By 1966 they were no longer producing insulators or glass blocks. In 1972 the plant closed its doors for good. On September 4, 2011 the Hemingray Glass Company site became a historic site exactly 123 years after they moved to Muncie. Imagine this…. The Hemingray Glass Company was cranking out 50,000,000 insulators per year back in 1907! Want to learn more of their interesting history? Cardinal Gree nway
The Cincinnati, Richmond and Muncie Depot (also known as the Wysor Street Depot) was built in 1901. It was acquired by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1920. The station was used for passenger train service throughout the 20th century and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Restored in 2004 it now serves as the headquarters office of the Cardinal Greenway. On display inside are photos and artifacts of the depots history. Cardinal Greenways offers free bike rental at the depot along with meeting space, souvenirs and community information.
Cardinal Greenways is a private, not-for-profit organization that encompasses the Cardinal Greenway, White River Greenway, Historic Wysor Street Depot and Cardinal Equestrian Trail.

Cardinal Greenways The Cardinal Greenway is the longest rail-trail in Indiana and spans 62 miles from Marion through Muncie to Richmond in East Central Indiana.
