5 Ways to Enjoy Mother’s Day Here are some great ideas of what you can do to enjoy Mother’s Day.

1. Enjoy a meal at a Child Friendly Hotel Take a day off from housework and the day to day grind. Take the family out for lunch or dinner to a child friendly restaurant/hotel or pub. Let the kids play in the play areas (dad’s on duty) while you can sit back, enjoy a nice drink and a break. The best thing with this type of celebrating is that there is no cleaning up before or afterwards and no cooking.

2. Picnic in the Park

Take advantage of some of the beautiful parks available in Australia. Depending upon your children and your family likes, you can look online for great parks to suit your needs. Find a child friendly park where you can picnic with great views, cycle around a track, enjoy a BBQ or watch the kids play on the play equipment.

3. Throw a party at home

If dad’s on board and willing to help: sometimes the easiest way to celebrate with a baby is to have people over to your house. The house is already child proof and when baby is tired, you can put them down to sleep and then relax.

4. Book a pamper party with your mum

What better way to celebrate than taking a few hours to relax and be pampered? Organise with hubby or siblings to have the kids cared for and book a pamper pack for you and mum. Then wave goodbye and enjoy the bliss of silence and the great feeling of being completely relaxed and taken care of.

5. Visit a winery

What better way to celebrate than with great wine? Enjoy taste testing and a fun and relaxing day as you sip wine share stories and enjoy a few laughs. As its Mother’s Day organise for one of the ‘dads’ to be the designated driver.

What New Mums Want this Mother’s Day What new mums really want, to be spoiled for Mother’s Day A precious baby has arrived into the world and you are plotting how to spoil the new mum. Department stores beckon you with the latest gadgets and nursery items. Surely this is what every new mum wants? The truth may surprise you. Be warned: you will never look at those stores the same way again. What we don’t often hear is that not only has a baby been born but also a mother. She has done an enormous job of carrying, nurturing and birthing this baby into the world. Whichever way her labour went, it took enormous courage and strength. So rather than getting carried away with all the nursery items you can get your hands on, consider the road less travelled and spoil the new mum instead. After all her hard work, surely she deserves it! The American Academy or Pediatrics says babies should sleep in their parents’ room – but not in the same bed – for at least the first six months, ideally for the whole year to reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by 50% so you can pretty much forget about the nursery for a while. When you think about it, the baby has no awareness of how pretty her nursery looks. All she wants is to be close to mum and get basic needs met. For nine months, baby’s nursery has been mother’s womb so her priorities are vastly different than ours. A healthy, whole, happy mother translates into a happy, calm baby who feels safe in the world so better to invest in the mother and help everybody involved.

So what does a new mother really need? I asked those that really matter – the new mums themselves. If someone could wave a magic wand, this is what they really want… “I could have done with a nap to be honest. Had my third child six months ago and I didn’t get a single nap during the day. I wish someone I trusted could have walked him for an hour when he was a newborn. “Time! People bothering to make time to see me and my baby.” It would cost nothing to visit or take baby for a scenic walk. Never underestimate the power of good food to feel nourished, rebuild strength and stamina as

well as having good milk supply for baby. “Definitely meals! But healthy meals and not a bunch of junk that makes you feel sick to your belly! A pitcher of fruit infused water would be fun to help stay hydrated while nursing.” “A steady stream of healthy and nutritious meals and snacks as well as someone to clean and do laundry for a week or two. That would really speak my language!” “Meals! My mom cleaned out and stocked my fridge; such a beautiful thing. Freezer meals. Foot massage or back rub or manicure. My doula brought me a breastfeeding basket that I carried from room to room and it was such a blessing.” “Someone to text in the morning saying, "don’t worry about dinner tonight, I’ve got this" and to turn up with dinner for our family. We live out of town and our neighbour did this! Now it’s my 'Go To' when my friends have children.” “Someone to come to my house and sit with the baby while I get to take a long shower, eat a decent meal. Then they can do my dishes for me... throw in a load of laundry.” “A post birth massage, a cleaner to mop my floors, someone to take my older kids out or help with meal prepping - getting quick meals stored in the freezer to save time. But even a simple breakfast in bed with loads of love and snuggles and a hot bath afterwards would be amazing too.” “A postpartum doula!” A doula helps a new family in those first days and weeks. This could also be part of a tradition which lasts up to 40 days, when a new mum rests and avoids physical work, while being cared for so she can focus on baby. “A day of self-care - whatever I need to feel good about myself. I think we submerge ourselves so much in the care of others that we don’t make time for ourselves. So a day when someone says, ‘don’t worry about your kids, I’ve got them today and you go do your thing’ is such a great gift. May every mother be spoiled in a meaningful way this Mother’s Day. Churros

Churros are delicious and this recipe is quick and easy. Perfect as a holiday treat or to enjoy with your children one afternoon or as a delicious dessert.

Churros

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

1 cup plain flour 1 tsp baking powder Pinch salt 1 Tbsp Olive Oil 1 cup boiling water

¼ cup sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Method:

Melted Chocolate

1 Tbsp Thickened Cream (milk will also work) 100g chocolate

1. Add flour, baking powder and salt to a large bowl. 2. Add olive oil and boiling water and stir together quickly mixing until the mixture is combined. It should be thick and doughy. 3. Place dough into a piping bag with a star tip nozzle and allow to cool down. If you don’t have a piping bag, simply roll the batter out into ‘sausage’ shapes. 4. In the meantime, heat oil in a pot. To test if the oil is hot enough, insert a wooden skewer into the oil and if bubbles form around it, the temperature is right. 5. Pipe lengths of the Churros dough into the oil, using scissors to cut it. Be careful not to drop the dough into the oil as it will splash. 6. Cook for a few minutes until golden. Use tongs to move around and turn if needed. 7. When cooked, using tongs, hold the churros up out of the oil to drain and then place onto Cinnamon Sugar plate. Using a different set of tongs, turn churros in the sugar and place on a new plate. 8. Once all churros are cooked, enjoy with your melted chocolate.

Cinnamon Sugar Plate

Combine sugar and cinnamon onto a plate with raised sides.

Melted Chocolate

Add milk and broken chocolate pieces into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second blocks, stirring after each one until the chocolate is melted and combined with the cream. The recipe makes around 15 Churros – which when shared in a big family wasn’t enough...so we can to create another batch. I would recommend considering doubling the quantities and making one larger batch.

Nutella Mug Cake There’s only one thing better than Nutella, and that’s Nutella for breakfast. And what could be a better breakfast in bed idea than an oozing, gooey chocolatey Nutella mug cake (it’s Mother’s Day, chocolate cake for breakfast, in bed, is totally permissible) But here’s where this idea gets a major Mother’s Day upgrade. You don’t serve the cake in any old mug, you serve it in the Mother’s Day ‘I Love You’ Mug. Many might think cake in a mug is a bit naff, but in fact many Michelin star restaurants make sponge in the microwave due to its light fluffy qualities.

Ingredients (Serves One)

2 TBS Self Raising Flour (Can use Gluten Free) 2 TBS Brown Sugar 2 TBS Cocoa Powder ¼ Teaspoon Baking Powder (Can use Gluten Free) 1 Egg 2 TBS Full Cream Milk 1 TBS Olive Oil 2 TBS Nutella or other Hazelnut choc Spread 1 Love Heart Mug

Method

1. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl (flour, sugar, cocoa and baking powder) 2. Make a well in the centre and add the wet ingredients. With a whisk or electric beaters, beat until well combined 3. Fill your Love Heart Mug with the cake batter, spoon Nutella in the centre. 4. Microwave on HIGH for 70-90 seconds or until cake has risen 5. Serve with cream and vanilla ice cream and glass of champagne This recipe provided by Matthew Lawry from Yellow Octopus who have a range of Mugs for Mum.
