My family has just spent a whirlwind three weeks visiting New York, Disney World in Orlando and Dubai. Travelling with kids is slightly more challenging than travelling alone (eek the traffic in New York is scary), but despite the exhaustion of being on the go 24/7, we had the most fantastic time! Here are some travel tips if you’re planning a similar trip: • Do your research beforehand so you have an idea of what you want to do and see, or ask your travel agent. If you can book and pay online for certain things, then do so as many places offer discounts for online bookings. • Make sure you book kids’ meals for the flights as they get activity kits/bags/soft toys etc depending on the airline. • Get going early! Our days consisted of getting up at the crack of dawn and heading out for breakfast on the run.• Your kids will tire after a long and busy day, so book a bus tour. The best value for money was our New York Pass, a hop on/hop off bus tour that was valid for 2 days and allowed free entry into almost 80 attractions. • We thought twice about spending $75 per person on a Broadway show, as once you convert back to the Rand it is a small fortune, but if you really want to do something, do it as you’ll regret it later if you don’t. • Do not book anything via the hotel’s concierge service! We were quoted almost $200 per person for our Broadway show which we booked direct for $75. • Take advantage of the “buy once and refill” offers. At our Disney hotel you could buy a cup for $15 then have free unlimited refills. • Always call 24 hours in advance to confirm the time of your transfer to the airport, even if your travel agent has pre-booked it. • You will not be able to avoid delays, so don’t let them upset you – we sat on the runway for 2 hours in Durban before taking off and then 3 hours in a queue in New York to get our passports stamped. • We often ate at self service type restaurants as a sit down meal in some cases quadrupled the price for the same meal.

Reader’s Life Funny Things Kids Say We had some wonderful responses to our 5 October newsletter in which we asked readers to send in the funny things their kids have said. Here are our favourites, said by Rory and Ben Steele and sent in by star contributor, their Dad, Warren Steele: • Rory (having a discussion about pirates): “Who makes breakfast for the pirates, Dad?”… “They do my boy.”… “How do they make breakfast with only one hand?” • Ben (watching a morning moon rise): “Look Dad, there’s the moon. The sun is the one with the spikes coming out, hey Dad?” Congratulations Warren – you win a Mum’s Mail Notebook. November Letters • Thank you, readers, for your recent generous donation of clothing to Kiddie Kan. The items were given to Gozololo Children’s Centre. Brenda Daniels. • In today’s times, we all know that success in business is not for the “faint hearted” so on behalf of the Three Peaks team we “salute” you on this achievement of the 8th year anniversary of Mum’s Mail. Debbie Jones. • Thank you for the wonderful Skip and Comfort hamper I won through your offices. The product is great and I can honestly say that these products will continue to be my product of choice for our household laundry. Michelle Scott. • We would like to thank Monkey Helpline so much for coming out to help the male monkey knocked down by a car outside our gate and left for dead. We called Monkey Helpline and Steve

www.mumsmail.com

was at our gate in under 15 minutes. Thank you Monkey Helpline for being on call and offering your professional services. Contact Monkey Helpline, Carol or Steve, 082 411 5444 or 082 659 4711. Roxy Moodie. • Thanks for organising such awesome competitions and functions and fun. I was so excited to win VIP tickets to the Chippendales. Heather. • Dear Slipper Supporters, thank you all for your contribution in making our Slipper Day a HUGE SUCCESS!!! Ana Claudio Sotero, Reach For A Dream Foundation. • Thank you for the Chippendale tickets I won. The show was brilliant, we laughed and clapped the whole way through. Another thing which was amazing is the owner/manager/dancer is my Dad’s old friend. My Dad died a few years ago and unfortunately I never got to spend time with him as my parents split before I was born. I have always felt like I am only half a person as I have no info on that side. Now from the show I am going to be put into contact with Dad’s family and start moving forward. I really can’t say thank you enough. Kelly-Ann Foord. • My kids attend Assegai Primary School in Wentworth and they do not receive your mag. My colleague gets this mag and I think it has fabulous articles, activities and events. Brenda-Lee Smith. Ed’s reply: You can subscribe to Mum’s Mail. It costs R100 per year and will be posted directly to you. E-mail info@mumsmail.com Send your letters to brenda@i4u.co.za. November Book & DVD Reviews FOR CHILDREN:

BOOKS: • One Little Mermaid is the simply told tale of how a little mermaid, Finn, loses her special necklace and how her two mermaid friends help her recover it. Young children will love it. Published by Ladybird Books, a Penguin Company. • First Skills with Ladybird – Counting and Letters Sticker Book are part of a set of books ideal for children aged two and upwards. The readers, activity books and flash cards are designed for parents to help young children develop basic skills in early maths, language and writing. Published by Ladybird Books, a Penguin Company. FOR ADULTS: MOVIES: • What age restrictions mean: S – Sex; L – Strong Language; V – Violence; P – Prejudice; N – Nudity; B – Blasphemy; M – Mature Accompaniment; PG – Parental Guidance. So for example a film with a 10M age restriction means that children under the age of 10 can attend as long as they have an adult with them. It does not mean that children under the age of 10 cannot see the film. The Film and Publication Board classify all films (http://www.fpb.org.za). DVDs: • Hunger Games (16V) stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in this, the first of the Hunger Games trilogy. It features a future world, set in North America, in which the poor are forced to compete in an annual competition. The competition is a “game” which involves contestants fighting each other to the death so that only one emerges as winner. A NuMetro release. • Mirror Mirror (PG) is a retelling of the well-known fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Lily Collins, who stars as Snow White, is made to look just like the original Disney character, but her character features a modern feminist tweak. Julia Roberts stars as the evil, and amusing, stepmother. A NuMetro release. BOOKS: • Zoo. James Patterson has done it again, providing us with a book that is not only easy to read but also makes you stop and think about the world around you. Zoo is the story of Jackson Oz, a young biologist, who senses a slow destruction in the world as he notices a change in the animals’ behaviour. All over the globe animals are attacking humans, with growing ferocity. It is up to Oz to figure out why and to help save humanity. This is a terrifying account of a world that desperately needs to change. Published by Random House Struik. • Paper Sons and Daughters is a memoir about growing up Chinese in South Africa written by Ufrieda Ho. The author, who was born in South Africa, explains how her family came to live in South Africa and how they fared under the Apartheid system. It is a balanced, touching and beautifully written account of an ordinary family getting by, told without judgement or over-politicising. Recommended reading. Published by Picador Africa, an imprint of Pan MacMillan. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Dad’s Life Bike Talk – Motorcycling When faced with the numerous personalities of both riders and motorcycles, there may not be a single answer as to what attracts a rider to motorcycling. Despite the differences between motorcycles, there are some universal attributes that get under the skin of the motorcyclist and feed the desire to ride.

P A N A C H E

charmainelingard@remax.net

Freedom is often cited as an attraction, but what does that mean? Compared to driving a car, riding a motorcycle offers freedom from the constraints of fourwheeled physics. When a car negotiates a turn, it leans to the outside of a corner whereas a motorcycle leans into a corner. Until you’ve experienced both you can’t understand the superior grace and simplicity of the latter. Cornering becomes a symphony of precise movements, working in harmony with the road instead of fighting it tooth and nail. On a motorcycle you experience a world of broader existence. Your body will feel the vibrations of the motor and absorb the buffeting of the wind. Your skin will feel the gently warming temperature as you crest a hill and drop to the valley floor below. You are no longer huddled behind a wheel disconnected from nature. “You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.” (Robert Pirsig).

Business Life Prepare Your House Before Putting it on the Market

KWAZULU-NATAL SO CIETY FOR THE BLIND A Proudly South African Organisation

• Kerb appeal: They say you can only make one “first impression” and people usually form their first impression within 30 seconds. The front of your house is a good place to spend a little extra time and money. Plant flowers, trim bushes, weed, pick up leaves, repaint your front door, and replace tarnished house numbers or a dented mailbox. • Clean: Your home must sparkle! • Fix: Got a dripping tap or a cracked tile? These will send the wrong message to potential buyers. Getting all problems fixed before you put your house on the market is a smart idea. • Eliminate clutter: This may be the hardest rule of all! We love our clutter but it doesn’t sell homes! Clutter makes homes seem smaller and disorganised. • Neutralise: Neutral colours sell. It’s a fact. Try to convey an image of quality and neutrality. Potential buyers walking through your home want to imagine themselves as the owners. If you use styles or colours they would never select, you’ve just turned them off. Stay high-quality, but neutral is safest. • De-personalise: Remove objects that your potential buyers won’t be able to identify with. For example, political and religious items may turn off whole groups of buyers, because they cannot “imagine” your home as their home. Buying a home is an emotional decision, and you want potential buyers to make an emotional connection with your home by being able to “see” themselves in it. • Define each area: Buyers need to know what each room is for, so that they can decide where they will place their own items. Sell the lifestyle and you’ll sell your house.

Business Life Businesswoman of the Month: Senta Duffield

Ladies’ Beginner Golf Coaching

Senta Duffield, principal teacher and director of belly dance company “Maya Dance Company”, started belly dancing after a horrible break up with a boyfriend of four years. “I was left a complete wreck,” said Senta, “and needed to find something to build myself up again. I saw a belly dancer, Wendy, perform, and immediately knew that she had the passion I needed to bring back into my life. I started lessons with her immediately! That eventually led to taking over my whole life and to me teaching belly dance.” Senta’s business advice to new entrepreneurs is to: “Follow your bliss and remember why you started your business.” Of course, life wasn’t always like this for Senta. When she was growing up she wanted to be a social worker and has worked – wait for it – as a travel agent, a tour guide, a German teacher, English teacher, course administrator for an English language school, Kahuna massage therapist, Reiki master, SRI breathwork therapist at a natural fertility centre, and a massage and body work teacher at a beauty college. Now she’s a belly dance teacher, show organiser and director, dance teacher examiner, main administrator for BDASA, and magazine owner and editor. Phew! Despite her passion for her work, Senta’s biggest goal this year has been to have more balance between work and play and to learn to delegate. “I always get let down if I don’t do the job myself,” said Senta. “I’ve had to lower my expectations of what people can/should do.” Senta, who is married to Warren, has recently started making porcelain dolls in her spare time, and longs to have a baby.

Dreaming of a Green Christmas?

Forget Irving Berlin and his dreams of a white Christmas. Andy Cartwright Homeware’s new Korol Christmas Tree will have environmentally conscious consumers humming a greener tune this December when they put this festive, fully recycled designer tree up in their homes. Korol is a cutting edge modular design system that uses recycled, starshaped components or “building blocks” that, when connected at their points, can form limitless functional and decorative designs for the home. Starting with homeware like clocks, bowls and lamps, Andy Cartwright Homeware has now created the Korol Christmas Tree for people looking for a tree with a difference that is also easy on the planet. The tree comes in a compact, kit form which is easy to assemble and is portable, further lowering its carbon footprint. Even the packaging is used as part of the finished product. Designer and company namesake, Andy Cartwright, says, “Our tree offers a unique take on Christmas. Not only is it eco-friendly, it also offers families the chance to get together and assemble the tree piece by piece, just like a puzzle, except in 3D.” The tree comes in two sizes. The large one is 1250mm high and costs R680 while the smaller one stands 850mm high and retails at R490. Both trees are available through various online stockists such as Design Indaba, Yellow Box, Five Rooms and DirtyCollective.co.za. Visitors to the KZNSA Gallery in Durban will also be able to purchase one. For more information, visit www.andycartwright.biz. Healthy Life Healthy Feet Are Happy Feet I really don’t pay my feet much attention and was delighted, therefore, to be given the chance to visit Joan Barnard of Healthy Feet for a foot treatment. While she soaked and treated my feet, Joan explained some of the important aspects of her work. Firstly, feet should not be neglected. Many of Joan’s clients visit her in regular four/six week cycles. Secondly, soaking feet for half an hour in hot water is essential before exfoliating, clipping etc. As a Foot Care Therapist Joan’s main focus is to attend to the health of the feet and prevent problems which would need referral to a podiatrist or even a doctor. And so she will attend to callouses (thickened skin), corns which grow on the top or underneath of feet or in between toes, and cut toenails correctly to prevent ingrown toenails. Contrary to what many of us have always been told, cutting your toenails straight across does NOT prevent ingrown Please toenails! It may even cause them. Nails contact should be cut round, in line with the shape me to view of the toe. the latest Another important tip, explained Joan, catalogue. is to dry toes thoroughly in between. This can prevent smelly feet and Athlete’s Foot. Joan is also very down to earth in her adJoelene 084 510 0633 vice and recommends ordinary, very af- joelene.brown@yahoo.com fordable products for people to use at home. Very exciting news for Joan, who has treated thousands of feet in her 20+ years in the business, is that she will be operating out of the Just Being Holistic Centre in Durban North (in addition to her Durban North home practice) as from 1 November. To make a booking at her new practice contact: Joan Barnard, 031 – 563 8420 or 083 284 8771. Review by Brenda Daniels for Mum’s Mail.

Practical Gifts for Christmas Get practical, healthy Christmas gifts for friends and family this year and know that your money has been well spent. Encourage a healthy lifestyle in those you love with the gifts you give and give them so much more than just a once-off gift. “Dress up” a bottle of Aloe Vera with a simply decorated pot plant. Give a tin of a Healthy Drink together with two funky drinking glasses and a card that says: “Enjoy a happy and healthy year ahead!”. Give a pack of Carotenoid Complex with a sweat band and peak cap. Even a homecare product is a great idea – pair a bottle of All Purpose Cleaner with a spray bottle and a pretty apron. But how to go about shopping for the gifts? Let’s face it, finding the time to search the shops, choosing just the right gift for the right person, and trying to ensure that what you’re buying is good quality can be difficult. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if someone could just bring a selection of top quality goods to you and you could select what would be suitable? Well, that’s precisely what direct selling does! In the comfort of your own home you can look at a selection of products and find just the gift you’re looking for, because high quality products make the most perfect Christmas gifts. So get practical this Christmas – buy healthy, useful gifts, and get the gifts brought to you instead of schlepping to the shops! Contact: Dennis & Lesley Banks, GNLD Distributors, 031 – 564 4200.

Skin Doctor Q & A

Question: I have excessive hair loss. I gave birth recently and during pregnancy my hair was thick and lovely. The hair now falls out in bunches clogging the shower drain. I am afraid that I will go bald. Help! Candace. Answer: The type of hair loss you describe is called Telogen Effluvium. I can assure you that you will not become bald with this condition. There are medical, hormonal and stress causes for this type of hair loss. What you describe is Post-partum Telogen Effluvium wherein about three months after giving birth, hair falls out excessively. This is due to the effect of the pregnancy hormones that prevented hair from falling out during pregnancy but once these hormones are gone, the hair that would have fallen out before, together with the normal hair fall, all happens at once in large scary bunches! This situation usually resolves spontaneously. If it is persistent or not related to pregnancy then a thorough assessment and blood work-up may be necessary to find a cause and appropriate treatment.

What to Expect During an Eye Test

• Detailed history and lifestyle evaluation: A discussion will take place to provide the optometrist with information concerning your health and lifestyle background, and to discuss any symptoms experienced. • Focimetry: Measurement of your current spectacle power is taken if you wear spectacles to measure later if a change is required. • Autorefraction: The autorefractor reads how light passes through your eye in order to help determine your baseline prescription which would be further refined in the refraction part of the test. • Visual acuity testing: Measures the eye’s ability to see details at near and far distances. The test involves reading letters or looking at symbols of different sizes on an eye chart. • Refraction: Your optometrist shows you different choices of lenses to establish your current prescription. They will then compare this to the previous prescription details to ensure stability. • Binocular vision and pupil exam: The optometrist will assess your eye muscles to ensure the eyes are working together which is important for depth perception and ensuring the eyes are not straining. • Tonometry: This measures your eye pressure. It is a key indicator in diagnosing the eye condition glaucoma. • Retinal exam: The optometrist will assess the health of your internal eye and in particular the retina. This is done with an ophthalmoscope and retinal camera to ensure that there is no disease or deterioration. The retinal camera takes a photograph of your eye so you can see what the inside of your own eye looks like. The optometrist will explain your visual requirements. If any disease was detected you will be referred to an ophthalmologist. Contact: Tracy Watson, Rahm & Friderichs Optometrist, 032 – 525 4682. Dr Megan Medina MTech(Hom) DUT

Fitting footwear: • Children should have their feet measured every three months. • There should be a thumb’s width between the end of the shoe and the end of the longest toe. • The sole of the shoe should be relatively straight rather than curved. • The shoe should preferably have laces, Velcro or buckles and should hold the heel firmly in the back of the shoe and not allow the foot to slide forward. • The shoe should be flexible across the ball of the foot while the heel counter should be firm and stable. • Leather and canvas are a better material – they are more durable and breathe better than synthetic and plastic shoes. • Shoes should ideally have round toe boxes to give the toes more room. • No shoe should be “broken” or “worn in” – if they do they are either poorly designed or poorly fitting.

Ozone 3 in 1 Therapy The Firm at the Northway Centre in Durban North is the only branch of The Firm in KZN that offers Ozone 3 in 1 Therapy. It is a safe and effective three-way therapeutic treatment that offers ozone (oxygen), resonance (electrical impulses) and far infrared (a light – not to be confused with ultraviolet) to enhance the body’s healing powers through oxygenation and detoxification.

MbChB (Natal). F.C Dermatology (SA)

• General dermatology • Paediatric dermatology • Mole screening • Dermatology surgery Contracted to most Medical Aids (Conditions Apply)

The therapy is good for: detoxification; circulation; improving cellulite, stretch marks and eczema; tissue oxygenation and improved healing; improved immune system activity; pain relief (e.g. arthritis and sports injuries); anti-ageing and wellness; enhancing metabolism; and toning the skin and muscles. I went along to The Firm and was attended to by Jenny Campbell. The Ozone Therapy machine looks like a giant shell that opens on one side. I laid down one of my own towels on the moulded seat inside and sat on that. Jenny advised me to strip completely – a good idea as I did perspire a lot – and then I covered myself with another towel. Once I was ready, Jenny closed the pod so that only my head wasn’t inside the pod. This is because it’s not a good idea to breathe in ozone for a long time. Jenny pulled my second towel out and padded up the gap so that the ozone wouldn’t escape. She then programmed the machine for 35 minutes of “stress relief” (I did feel relaxed afterwards) and switched it on. My hands felt an electrical impulse through the handles I gripped, the infrared light came on at the end of the pod and the ozone poured into the pod. A series of treatments is required for the conditions described above. Contact: Jenny, 031 – 563 4195, durbannorth@thefirm.co.za. Review by Brenda Daniels for Mum’s Mail.

Healthy Life Diabetes Awareness Month – Know Your Number

Dr Nazeer N. Mahomed Dr Wil Ehlers MBChB (Pret) General Practitioner Family Practitioner Practice Number: 1565540

Diabetes mellitus is a condition that occurs when the body can’t use glucose (a type of sugar) normally. Glucose comes from the foods we eat and is the major source of energy needed to fuel the body’s functions. After you eat a meal, your body breaks down the foods you eat into glucose and other nutrients, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract. The glucose level in the blood rises after a meal and triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and release it into the bloodstream. Insulin is important as it allows glucose to leave the blood and enter the body’s cells. In people with diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or the body can’t respond normally to the insulin that is made (type 2 diabetes). Diabetes is one of the leading killers in South Africa.

Key risk factors of diabetes include: Western diet, genetics and being overweight. The five most common symptoms are: thirst, increased hunger, frequent urination, blurry vision and fatigue. Common conditions associated with diabetes affect the feet, eyes, teeth, gums and skin. As a diabetic, foot care is of the utmost importance. Poor circulation in the feet and legs is one of the biggest problems facing diabetics, and is characterised by leg pain, leg cramps and numbness. If this is not attended to, it could lead to severe gangrene and amputation. Use a circulation specific foot cream daily. Get your glucose tested and know your number. Don’t Let Your Weight Weigh You Down

Obesity is an excess of total body fat, where a person weighs more than 20% above their normal weight. Being obese increases the risks of high blood pressure and cholesterol, artery disease, strokes and Type 2 Diabetes. Factors that affect obesity are age, physical activity, environmental and lifestyle behaviours, illness, medications, and genetics. While the reasons may vary, the simple fact is that there is no reason to assume you are doomed to being overweight or obese. The truth is you can lose weight, and keep it off, despite the challenges you face. Lack of commitment to a healthy eating plan and failure to monitor and review weightloss goals are reasons many people fail at their weight-loss efforts. The chances of success increase if you join a programme offering regular sessions with constant monitoring and motivation, like the programme offered at The Firm – Slimming & Health Clinic, where electronic muscle stimulation machines and infrared treatments are combined with a healthy eating plan to give clients positive and lasting results. One 30-minute session provides a full, targeted, muscle workout. Other benefits include improved circulation and an increase in lymph drainage. Whether you are at a club and need both hands to get down and party, or watching a rugby game at the stadium, wanting to carry and navigate your drinks safely, or whether you are at a function and need a really glam way to carry your essential items, like bank cards, a cell phone or cash, the Wow Bag is the answer. It is an essential wardrobe must-have, worn on the wrist, for those who are driven by the principles of functionality, practicality and simple stunning style.

Tiny Life Importance of Toilet Training

Quality New & Pre-Owned Baby Goods

The day Mum packs away the nappies and puts underpants or panties on her pre-schooler is a milestone in the lives of both mother and child. When she picks up her baby it is suddenly a vastly diminished little body that she holds against her. The child’s balance is also much better and his movement much freer without the cumbersome nappy. Toilet training is part of the social code that has to be learnt. The course it will take depends on the mother and the pre-schooler concerned. Some children acquire this skill more rapidly than others do. It is important that the mother remain calm and relaxed, even if the child doesn’t manage immediately.

Quality baby goods including the imported Baby Jogger Range, Amber Teething Beads, Sheepskin Baby Rugs and Cherub Tree All-In-One Reusable Nappies. We also buy and sell pre-owned baby goods such as cots, car seats & prams. Mon - Fri: 9 - 5pm, Sat: 9 - 2pm & Sun: 9 - 1pm

During this time the pre-schooler needs lots of acceptance and praise. Initially it’s a matter of trial and error to achieve something in the potty. Children should never be forced to stay there until they have produced something. When they do manage to produce something in the potty they are usually extremely proud of it. They expect the parents to rave about it and may even pick up the potty and show it around. Pre-schoolers don’t find their excrement repulsive. They see it as part of themselves. If Mum screws up her nose at the smell, the pre-schooler will feel rejection. Some pre-schoolers can’t bear to see their first effort flushed down the toilet. In such cases leave the potty with its contents in the bathroom or toilet for a while. Ensuring the smooth running of the process of potty training is important because it forms a major part of the pre-schooler’s realisation that he is acquiring control of his own body. With praise and encouragement he will be proud of his body and its achievement.

Nursery Design Trends: Artwork, Eco-Friendly Decorating & Ceilings Cool artwork ideas for nurseries: People are using big canvas art and vintage posters to fill walls. Wall art will always look the same for babies, but now the ABCs and 123s are being done in vintage tones. People also like stretched canvasses that have the pattern of the fabric used in the nursery.

Eco-friendly: Eco-friendly decorating is huge right now. But you must do your research. Just because something has that stamp on it doesn’t mean it’s actually eco-friendly. Everything is trying to be green because it’s trendy and parents need to think accordingly. Is it something you can get made or done locally? It’s the bigger picture of being environmentally friendly as well as raising your child in an environment that is healthy that is important. A good example of eco-friendly fabric is 100% cotton percale which is cool and natural. Paint should be non-toxic. Don’t forget the ceiling: The one thing that Wendy Weir of Oki Doki always focuses on is the ceiling. Your baby stares at it for the first five to six months of his life. So unscrew the light bulb on the ceiling and introduce lamps so that the lighting is not so harsh. Also, consider painting the ceiling a colour like a blue, green or yellow to complement the room, so it has a more soothing look to it. The ceiling is often the most ignored. Sometimes it’s good for parents to lie on the floor and say: “What is my baby going to see and what can I do to make that special?” Contact: Wendy Weir, Oki Doki Baby and Kids, 031 – 701 9289, 083 799 0301, okidokibaby@mweb.co.za. www.okidokibaby.co.za.

Rebounding Gives Energy Boost

Besides the many health and fitness benefits of trampolining/rebounding, people who rebound find they are able to work longer, sleep better, and feel less tense and nervous. One of the immediate effects after a rebounding session is that you feel alive and energised – and this feeling can last for hours after you’ve bounced. Health and fitness centres throughout the U.S.A., the U.K., the E.U. and Australia have begun including rebounding classes in their programmes, with large corporations also taking advantage of its accessibility. Absenteeism is reduced and levels of energy and morale are increased. A bonus for people with busy schedules is the time efficiency. Two minutes of jumping on a rebounder or trampoline is equivalent to six minutes of running, 10 minutes of swimming and 22 minutes of walking. A five-minute bounce is therefore equivalent to doing a quick jog around the block and 20 minutes offers similar benefits to a health and fitness session of over an hour. The mild G-Force created by rebounding is so effective that a system called “buddy bouncing” is even being used for people who are weak, frail and/or recuperating from illness or surgery. A participant sits on the rebounder while an able adult stands on the mat, legs astride, and bounces them gently. It has been found that you’ll benefit even if you sit in a separate chair with your feet on the mat, which someone else bounces for you. Rebounding offers so many benefits – but the one you’ll feel immediately is the energy boost after every session, whether for three or 20 minutes. Every household should have a trampoline or rebounder for fitness and health! Contact: Hannes Pieterse, S.A. Trampoline, 083 235 7074, 012 – 548 6809, www.satrampoline.co.za.

Young Life Beesting and the Second Tree Talk Lesson: Listening with a Lenni Ear

Monumental Music School

Guitar and Piano Lessons

Beesting and the children had a lot to think about. They never knew that a forest had so many lessons to teach. “Children and Beesting,” the tree said in a gentle voice, “come closer and wrap your arms around my trunk.” Beesting and the children moved closer. “Good,” the tree continued, “now turn your head and put your right ear, which is your Lenni listening ear, close to my trunk so that you can listen very carefully to what I have to say.”

Bringing the lessons to you wherever you are in Durban! 072 499 4702 You learn more than music, you learn an art!

Beesting was puzzled. At first he couldn’t hear a thing. Everyone held their breath so that they could listen very carefully. Everything was quiet – even the birds stopped their tweeting and the wind quietened down. It was then that Beesting and the children heard it – doef, doef, swoosh, doef, swoosh doef – the heartbeat of the tree. How cool is that Andrew thought to himself – a tree with a heartbeat. Do all trees have a heart or is it only this tree he wondered? “Now children,” the tree continued, “let go of my trunk and put your right hand on your heart.” Beesting looked bewildered. He had no clue where his heart was. He tried putting his paw on his head, then on his back. He even scratched behind his left ear. Mary had to help him this time. “No Beesting,” she said, “your heart is sort of in the middle of your chest.” “Now that you have all put your hand on your heart, can you listen to what your heart is trying to tell you?” asked the tree.

BMX Champ

“Ok riders…riders ready…watch the gate…” This is what six year old Christopher Robin pupil, Kai Henning, listens for at the start of every BMX race. As the start lights flash from red to green, the gate drops, releasing the riders to battle each other over jumps, fly through the air and pedal for all they’re worth to win. Don’t let their size and age fool you – they are tough and ultra competitive. BMX is a true family sport that creates friendships from an early age. The kids race against each other on the track then play with each other between race heats, creating lasting friendships throughout their racing careers. It is one of the only sports in which the whole family can take part – there is a class for Mum, Dad, brother and sister. Riders as young as four years race BMX.

Young Life Gold on Many Levels Few children experience a school holiday like David Zondi, 16, from Focus on iThemba and his peers at Kearsney College experienced recently. There were many firsts for David: from getting his South African passport, to boarding an aeroplane, landing on U.S. soil, and the highlight – earning a gold medal at the World Choir Games. David’s story was a bit different from that of his peers. A few years ago he was vulnerable, like many other South African children, because he lost his parents at a young age. However, in 2006 David’s life changed dramatically when he was embraced by the Focus on iThemba programme and a loving family in the Joshua House Foster Care Home. In 2010 David’s blessings continued when he earned a bursary through the Kearsney Foundation to attend Kearsney College. He was overjoyed for being recognised for his extraordinary sporting abilities. Besides his athletic skill, his natural singing voice was quickly noticed and he became part of the renowned Kearsney College Choir. • Gorgeous things & fun • Classes 1 hr

Young Life Toys that Teach: Give Your Kids a Head Start International research has shown that toys are tools that help children’s personal growth and teach them about the world in which they live. According to industry experts, play: • Helps youngsters develop their physical, language and social skills. • Improves their problem-solving capabilities. • Enhances their memory and attention spans. “When we choose our toys,” says senior marketing manager of The Crazy Store, Kevin Light, “we hope that they will spark the imaginations of the kids lucky enough to play with them. We look for quality at reasonable prices so that parents have options when it comes to birthday and Christmas presents. A baking set, for example, teaches them about shapes, volume and mass. A cash register can be a fun way of learning about budgeting their pocket money and practising addition and subtraction. You never know – musical instruments or a little sewing machine could reveal hidden creative talents!”

Tweens & Teens’ Life

Prepare for Success in Life with a Gap Year Many young school leavers are unsure as to which tertiary qualification to study towards, and often take a gap year because of this. The Sigma Academy has a perfect solution to this option through a value added four to eight month programme, with the academic component offered at Varsity College. The programme effectively combines formal learning with personal development opportunities. The end result – a young adult who has gained academic knowledge, who has experienced personal development and who is ready to take life to the next level through tertiary education.

The programme is built on six core areas, which are health, business, community, life skills, self-actualisation and relationships. The Academy’s programme is unique as it engages young people in all eight critical areas of human development. These are: • Physical – fitness, health, survival and outdoor activity skills. • Mental – outside interests, hobbies, resourcefulness, creative ability. • Leadership – assuming a constructive DO YOU WANT TO BE place in society by helping and guiding others. Educated Life Extramurals: Scouts Scouting is more relevant now than ever. In an age when parents are wary about letting their children out on their own and young people are staying inside spending hours in front of the TV, on computer games or online, scouting offers a real alternative. KZN has a strong and vibrant scouting community, with scout groups in most parts of the province. These groups offer some amazing activities throughout the year, where adventure is a way of life. Scouting caters for a wide age range: Cubs (girls and boys seven to 10 years), Scouts (girls and boys 11 to 18 years) and Rovers (young men and women 18 to 35 years).

Educated Life Annie’s Busy Beez Light up Christmas Annie’s Busy Beez Baby Care Pre-School and Play Centre will be doing the “big switch on” of their Christmas lights on 1 December. Members of the public will be able to drive through the property to view the lights from a week before Christmas. Visitors are also encouraged to drop a toy in the box provided at 37 Romsey Grove, Ellis Park, Durban North. These toys will be added to the East Coast Radio Toy Story collection. Annie’s Busy Beez started nine years ago with a humble six lights strung up on the outside of their pre-school/home. They now have over 100. Annie Moodie (Queen Bee) simply wanted something beautiful at Christmas time for the children to see and be excited about. People began to show an interest as the number of lights grew, stopping Annie to ask when the “big switch on” was going to happen. “All the lights get put up by my dedicated husband who starts putting them up from October because he only has Saturday afternoons and Sundays to put them up,” said Annie. “We go through over 2000 cable ties and each year I add more lights – much to my husband’s dismay and my joy!”

Educated Life My Child’s Self-Esteem Without a healthy self-esteem, children can really be at a disadvantage. It is extremely intricate – our world today is far more complicated, competitive, complex and uncertain than the one in which we grew up. To cope, children need to be taught skills and given knowledge that will enable them to think critically and creatively, and, more than ever, to be self-reliant and confident. The biggest attribute you as a parent can give your child, is to help them build a solid and healthy self-esteem. Self-esteem is about how we think about ourselves and others and this is based on our relationship with our parents. A confident child feels comfortable in their own skin because their parents accept them just the way they are without undue criticism or judgement and they allow them to learn and explore from a supportive and unconditional position. It is critical to their development. Sometimes however, completely unintentionally, we could be jeopardising the development of our children’s self-esteem. Often we parent from love, instead of from responsibility. A typical example of this is doing everything for our children and not letting them learn. It is written: “The mind of a child is a mystical place - where character grows like a tree, and children become better or worse, by the actions of you and me.”

Educated Life Time Timer The Time Timer is a battery-driven clock. You set it and watch the red section get smaller and smaller. It shows you, even if you are too young to tell time, how much time is left. It’s ideal for the classroom, for therapists and for home use. Setting Time Timers: Use your finger to gently move the disc counter-clockwise to set the required time, in red, on the Time Timer face. Then, as time elapses, the red portion gets smaller and smaller (moving clockwise) until no red is visible indicating that the set time period has ended. Use Time Timers to: • Time tests and exams. • Measure study periods and lunch breaks. • Show time left to play, get ready or clean up. • Time counselling sessions and exercises. • Build self-esteem by allowing self-monitoring. • Oversee speech, hearing and vision therapies. • Prompt RD PRE-SCHOO memory for medications, appointments, XFO L O etc. • Manage time in the work place. • Solve the morning kitchen/breakfast cri- WORKING TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE • 2 to 5 Years • Half/Full Day sis (it works wonders set on the fridge to get • Healthy Meals/Snacks everyone ready in time to leave for school • Small Groups/Aircon • High on Hygiene in the morning)! In a teaching situation, no other tool communicates the concept of elapsed time as well as the Time Timer. Used as an interactive teaching tool, this classroomtested teaching aid reinforces the sense of elapsed time with a graphic depiction of the time remaining. Other teaching aids emphasise only what time looks like as a static number or a position on a clock face. Contact: Maati van Heerden, create@iafrica.com, 022 – 492 2979, www.maatismarket.com.

Party Life Parties at the KZN Science Centre The KZN Science Centre offers a fantastic, secure and enjoyable environment for parties. The party package includes use of the Science Centre Lab as well as party setup by the Science Centre team. Guests at the party are allowed full access to the exciting exhibition floor with over 100 interactive exhibits. BSc graduate Education Officers are on standby to explain the science behind these exhibits thus taking “edutainment” to a higher level! There is also the famous Murray & Roberts construction site where little Einsteins, or anyone for that matter, can play and build to their hearts’ content! Parents are welcome to book one of the ever-popular Scientastic Science Shows. Watch how elephant toothpaste is made, see a rocket being launched or discover how money is set alight without burning! Editor of Mum’s Mail, Alice Leah, had this to say about her son’s 9th birthday party at the Science Centre: “In a word, hassle free! I loved that we had our own dedicated and private party room which had been set up in our party theme colours and came complete with tables and chairs, a kettle/urn and cups. All I had to add were the eats and drinks! There is even a ‘main’ table upfront for the cutting of the cake. Most of the moms grabbed the chance to nip out and do some shopping, knowing that their kids were perfectly safe inside the Science Centre. Best of all, we hardly saw the kids as there is so much to do they were on the go for two hours. Highly recommended party venue and thank goodness it was indoors as that particular day was torrentially rainy.”

Party Life

Party Princess Party Princess was started with a love for children’s happy faces and a passion for party planning. There is no greater joy than seeing a child’s face light up on their birthday and the twinkle in their eye when they see their party. We forget that children see things differently to how we do and a party is normally the highlight of their year. This is obvious by the countdown of “five sleeps to my party”! Party Princess specialises in children’s parties and themed events in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg/Midlands areas, stretching to Ballito on the North Coast and Amanzimtoti on the South Coast. They supply the set-up or hire of kiddies’ chairs and tables, tableware, themed accessories, cakes, party packs, photoboards, entertainment such as face painters, games, magicians or even a clown. Party Princess not only aims to make your party stress free, but also affordable. They allow you to choose what you want to pay for with no added pressure. Any theme – they do it, boys and girls alike. Party Princess strives to make your child’s day unique with attention to detail and a dash of sparkle. Not only can they do children’s parties from ages one to 12 years, they are now venturing into themed events for any party at any age. Soon they’ll be launching their new range of themed party treats for a “classier” party. Look out for “Candy Couture” with candy bars and dessert tables to whet your appetite. Let Party Princess wave her wand and create memories to last a lifetime...

Relaxed Life

White Mountain Festival

Every so often it becomes imperative to take time out from reality. To step away from the nine to five, the deadlines, the petrol fumes and the stress, and to spend some time actually breathing in fresh mountain air. This is why I look forward to the White Mountain Festival every year, because for just a few days you actually know what it’s like to feel relaxed. Surrounded by good music, beautiful scenery and your best friends, life just doesn’t get any better. This year was no different, and Pedro and Mandy certainly outdid themselves. There is just something about festival life that is so different to the life we have become used to. Here, everyone is your friend, there are no hidden agendas and each person seems to have the same mindset – peace, love and total acceptance. White Mountain Festival has something for everyone, from the very young to the very old. You’ll have a blast coming with a group of friends or your family. The festival is sadly over and the only things I have left are the memories which I’ve thankfully captured through hundreds of photos. I’ve been going to White Mountain since 2008 and every year the same routine happens: July rolls around, the mid-year slump hits, and I start to reminisce through my photos. Stumbling across the previous year’s festival pictures I am suddenly reminded of what is to come. A few phone calls and e-mails later and plans are suddenly underway. The next White Mountain approaches. So join me next year… you’ll be hooked. Contact: Mandy Carlo, 082 447 7258. Review by Christine Bernard for Mum’s Mail.

SA’s very own Irish minstrel, Dave Monks presents an evening of mirth, merriment and above all, sing-a-long Irish music. He has a proven repertoire of rousing Irish favourites and between songs, Dave delivers a touch of the blarney in his collection of Irish tales and jokes. Dave was born and raised in Dublin, which gives more than a touch of authenticity to this Irish music and humour. The folky feel of the music is accentuated by Dave’s mastery of the fiddle, banjo and harmonica as well as the guitar. • SHOW DATES: 9 - 11 November • VENUE: Stirling Theatre, Durban North, Italian Club, 82 Fairway • TIMES: 8pm (Fri & Sat) & 3pm (Sun) • COST: R80 per ticket • BYO picnics & snacks, Cash bar, Regret no credit card facility.

Established in 2003, Mum’s Mail has become one of the most indispensable resources for parents, grandparents, teachers, business owners and other interested readers in Durban and surrounding areas, as well as Pietermaritzburg/Midlands. The targeted, specific distribution (LSM 7 – 10) of our free, full colour monthly magazine to créches, pre-schools, primary schools, shopping malls, family and baby clinics, doctors’ rooms, public libraries and selected retail outlets, ensures that your product or service reaches the right market, on time, every time. Mum’s Mail has proven time and again that it has an exceptional shelf life, which is partly due to its practical, A5 format – it’s the ideal size to pop into your handbag or cubby hole. It really is Life’s Little Toolbox!
