Editor’s Life As I type this month’s letter, we are hurtling towards our annual high tea on the 6th of September. Our theme this year promises to be another winner – Bollywood Bling! Everything at the event is focused on the theme – the decor, the photos, the outfits the ladies wear, the food, the gifts, the goodie bags, the speakers and entertainment – even the pop-up shops! It takes about six months to put together one morning of fun, and every year as the high tea looms nearer, the boxes of goodie bag samples, hampers and vouchers crowd us out of the office and house. But what never ceases to amaze me is the selfless generosity of each and every sponsor we approach. At the last count, we had more than 200 sponsors this year, which is incredible. We have a number of very loyal financial headline sponsors, who have all been on board for a number of years: Baby City, La Lucia Mall and Sanlam, as well as IBV International Vaults who came on board last year. Without these four key sponsors, we would be unable to host this phenomenal event and raise much needed funds to build the bone marrow registry of S.A. via The Sunflower Fund. We are also delighted that Sunbird Perfumes has come on board as this year’s gift sponsor and will be spoiling each lady with a fragrance of their choice – and of course the bottle lid is gold to suit the theme! We’d love to hear your theme ideas for the 2014 high tea – the best idea that we choose for the theme will win a free ticket to the event next year! Send your suggested themes to editor@ mumsmail.com.

Laidback Life September Book Reviews by Books & Books ADULTS: The Garden of Burning Sand by Corban Addison. Zoe Fleming is an American attorney working with an NGO devoted to combating child sexual assault in Lusaka, Zambia. When an adolescent girl is raped Zoe’s organisation is called in to help. Working alongside Zambian police officer Joseph Kabuta, she learns that the girl’s assailant was not a street kid or a paedophile but the son of a powerful industrialist with deep ties to the Zambian government. As the prosecution against him grinds forward, hampered by systemic corruption and bureaucratic inertia, Zoe and Joseph’s search for the truth takes them from Lusaka’s roughest neighbourhoods to the wild waters of Victoria Falls, to the AIDS-ridden streets of Johannesburg and the splendour of Cape Town. As the rape trial builds to a climax and sends shockwaves through Zambian society, Zoe must radically reshape her assumptions about love, loyalty, family and especially the meaning of justice. CHILDREN: • Atticus Claw Lends a Paw by Jennifer Grey. Atticus Grammatticus Cattypuss Claw, the world’s greatest police cat, is back. When the kittens at the local cats’ home are wrongly suspected of a knitting crime spree, Inspector Cheddar is baffled. Atticus must step in to find the real culprits. In an adventure that takes him from Littleton-on-Sea to the sands of the Egyptian desert, Atticus has to use all his tabby talents to keep one paw ahead of Ginger Biscuit and Jimmy Magpie and his gang. Can Atticus reach the lost city of cats and save the priceless treasure from the villains before it’s too late? • A Horse called Hero by Sam Angus. It is 1940. As the Second World War escalates and London becomes a target for German bombs, Dodo and her horse-mad little brother Wolfie are evacuated to the country, away from everything they know. After weeks of homesick loneliness, they come across an orphaned foal. They name the horse Hero for surviving against the odds and together they raise him, train him, and learn to ride. TEENS: Watersong 04 Elegy by Amanda Hocking. The explosive final book in the bestselling teen series, Watersong, by Amanda Hocking is not to be missed! With Gemma now holding the key to breaking the siren curse, the stakes have never been higher. At last, a future with those she loves – and a romance with Alex – is close enough to touch but not if Penn, arch nemesis, has anything to say about it. Penn is more determined than ever to have Daniel for her own and to destroy Gemma and her sister Harper along the way and Penn always gets what she wants. The final battle is about to begin. Can Gemma keep everyone and everything she holds dear? Contact: Books & Books, 031 - 563 6288, shop@booksandbooks.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each reviewed book to give away. Everyday Life City Chicks City Chicks Famous Fried Chicken is a fresh new vibey franchise that was three years in the development stage until the first store was hatched in February 2012 at the UKZN Westville Campus. This was followed closely with the launch of three more stores due to an alliance with Freshstop (Fruit & Veg City) and Chevron (Caltex), taking the franchise to further heights in that City Chicks is expanding into the Freshstop Convenience Stores throughout KZN and subsequently nationally. City Chicks, as the name suggests, is a distinctive new fried chicken franchise that is boldly making its mark on the food scene. The menu offerings range from fried chicken, burgers, wraps, sandwiches and platters, to a whole range of Grab n Go and Heat & Eat Meals with enough variety to suit any palate. As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of all invention and that is exactly how City Chicks was born. It comprises dynamic husband and wife duo, Majeed and Naseeha Dawood, who have a wealth of experience in the food industry. A home experiment with a blend of various spices created a tantalising end product. City Chicks offers great daily, weekly and monthly specials and is on a continuous drive to improve and expand on their very varied product offering. City Chicks can be found at: Caltex Freshstop Gateway, 5 Centenary Boulevard, Umhlanga, 031 – 564 4653; Caltex Freshstop Baywatch, 127 Margaret Mncadi Avenue, Esplanade, 031 – 301 3791; Caltex Freshstop Queensmead, 22 Piet Retief Road, Queensmead, 031 – 464 8144. Their hatchling store is at: Shop 1, Student Development Centre, UKZN Westville Campus, 031 – 260 8453.

Delicious Life Pack a Healthy Lunchbox The small kiwifruit is one of the world’s most nutritious fruit and contains very high levels of vitamin C, potassium, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, making them ideal fruit for growing kids and adults. They have a low G.I. and are low in fat. Zespri Kiwifruit, the world’s largest marketer of kiwifruit, has launched the Zespri Occupy Lunchbox campaign. This is in response to a study released in 2012 from the University of Witwatersrand that showed a decline in packed lunches and an increase in tuck shop purchases amongst school kids over a period of five years. Zespri Occupy Lunchbox, which champions nutritious balanced packed lunches and in particular the health benefits of the kiwifruit, is focussed on moms packing healthy lunches for their families. The aim is to encourage South Africans to pack a nutritious lunch and include the minimum daily dietary requirement, including at least one fresh fruit a day. The Zespri Occupy Lunchbox campaign with Kid Z launched in August and a blogger challenge and “Cut, Scoop and Enjoy” competition launches in September. It’s easy to eat a kiwifruit with your very own knife and spoon – simply grab your knife and cut the kiwifruit in half, then use your spoon to scoop out the delicious goodness inside. For more info visit www.zesprikiwifruit.co.za. WIN WIN WIN 1 Mum’s Mail reader will win R500 in Yuppiechef vouchers & a Zespri goodie bag in the Cut, Scoop & Enjoy competition: Take a photo of yourself (or your family) eating a kiwifruit using the cut & scoop method. Submit your photos to zespri@storybookcommunications.co.za (put “Mum’s Mail: Cut, Scoop & Enjoy” in the title). www.mumsmail.com

Home Life DIY Enthusiasts DIY enthusiasts will be ecstatic with the news that WAGNER SprayTech products are back in South Africa and here to stay. With prices starting from as little as R495 for paint spraying systems, handy paint spray guns, paint rollers or steam wallpaper strippers, WAGNER brings the avid handyman or small contractor ease of mind and pocket. Most spraying systems from WAGNER have the practical Click & Paint technology. This allows the paint carrying spraying attachment to be separated from the handle with a small twist and replaced with another WAGNER attachment. Perfect results are guaranteed every time and applications are uniform, lasting longer than conventional paint brush or roller techniques. Tests have proven that when using a conventional roller and corner brush to paint a 4 x 4m room, it takes 58 minutes. When using a WAGNER Spray Gun, it takes a staggering 15 minutes! If a roller is still preferred, then the TurboRoll is the answer. Very easy to use – the suction system is placed in the paint container and the paint is drawn into a connected 550 ml cylinder with the simple press a button. With the paint roller W3500 kit, the paint is pumped directly from the tin via a hose to the roller, enabling you to paint ceilings, internal walls and even external walls in comfort. A 15m2 wall can be completed in 10 to 15 minutes with no second coat required!

Home Life Tired Tyres Find New Life After wondering what she was going to do with her life Colleen Deetlefs hit upon the idea of using discarded tyre tubes and other recyclable materials to create recycled products. She now makes a range of bags, jewellery, wallets, belts and other accessories. Having had previous experience in the recycling, clothing & footwear, buying and production businesses, Colleen added to this her passion for the environment and a way of creating sorely needed employment, and opened her business Free Flow Dezign. Since opening she has already created six jobs. All of her employees were previously unemployed and she has trained them to sew this material. By nature the materials are difficult to work with and not easy on the hands but Colleen’s passion for recycling and her sheer determination are what have kept her going. The products are created locally and are thus 100% South African. Free Flow has taken very seriously its responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint and its commitment to sustainability goes beyond upcycling.

Healthy Life Your Children’s Ears Voltaire once said the ears are the highway to the heart. This seems an apt description considering how a child’s cry, romantic song or neighbour’s loud music can stir one’s emotions. Before becoming involved in ear-care Penny Fatsilidis had very little knowledge about caring for her and her family’s ears. Despite her children suffering from repeated ear infections, Penny didn’t know the degree to which ear infections could strip her child’s hearing. This became a reality when at six years of age Penny’s beautiful young daughter was diagnosed as hearing impaired due to repeated ear infections. How could this have happened? Penny sought ways to treat the problem naturally. She used a careful regime of preventing water at any stage from entering her daughter’s ears. This did not mean just whilst swimming. It meant any time she was in the water. Penny also became very aware of exposing her children to loud noises, e.g. at movies, airports and putting earphones right into their delicate ears. Our ears have three main enemies: • Water. • Loud noise from the environment or ear-phones. • Cotton buds. Cotton buds are very dangerous to our ears as they strip all the natural good wax out of our ears making them more sensitive and prone to infection. Ear care: To clean ears wipe the outer ear with a damp cloth, never inserting anything into the ear. Use good quality anti-bacterial or medicated earplugs to prevent water and infection from entering the ear. Monitor the noise levels of ear phones – the golden rule is maximum 15 minutes on a moderate level. Don’t insert any foreign objects into your ears. Healthy Life Seven Good Reasons to Use ORYX Desert Salt • Sustainable and renewable source. Three underground streams converge in an ancient underground lake, from which the brine is pumped, laid on the pan under the hot Kalahari sun and sun dried. The salt is then harvested and packed in bags. This process is not depleting the natural source. • Vital minerals and trace elements. From its rich underground source ORYX desert salt has a high mineral and trace elements content in the right proportion for your body to utilise and absorb for optimal functioning, vitality and health of the body. • 280 million years old. The Dwyka rock formations over which the streams flow and from where the Sodium Chloride and the minerals and trace elements leach, are geoscientifically tested between 250 million and 300 million years old. • Pollution free. The salt is harvested from an underground source in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa in a region that has never been inhabited or used for industry and is therefore as pollution free as you can get. • Unprocessed with no additives. Exactly as nature intended. No addition of iodine, anti-clumping agents or preservatives. It is not processed, washed or refined. • 100% pure. It is absolutely pure, naturally crystal white salt as it has been traded ounce for ounce for gold from 8000 years ago. • Delicious! ORYX desert salt has a unique and exceptional taste which enhances and enriches the flavour of your food. Contact: Megan Steyn, ORYX Desert Salt, 082 330 2611, megan@oryxsalt.co.za. Healthy Life The Community Pharmacist A husband and wife politely interrupted our conversation to ask Dipthi some questions. Dipthi happily answered their queries and they moved on leaving us to our coffee. This brief encounter perfectly illustrated what we had just been talking about: the personal touch that a community pharmacist brings to her work. Knowing her customers, their medical history, and developing relationships with people that make it easy for them to approach her is what community pharmacy is all about, said Dipthi, Mt Edgecombe Pharmacy’s pharmacist. Whilst other types of pharmacies have their place, community pharmacies offer something different: convenience and personal care.

Dr Paul Darby-Wade Dentist BChD (Stell.), MFGDP, Dip. in Implant Dentistry RCS (UK)

SPECIAL SERVICES: • Children • Bleaching • Nervous Patients • Implants • Cosmetic Treatment • Same Day Crowns

In this vein, Mt Edgecombe Pharmacy, which is surrounded mainly by residences, runs a clinic with a number of useful services: Discovery Vitality and Momentum Health Assessments; a baby clinic (for immunisations and weighing); wound care (which is prohibitively expensive elsewhere); pap smears; blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol testing; injections (e.g. flu); and family planning. Dipthi is particularly enthusiastic about educating her patients. She thrives on broadening their knowledge about medicine and their uses, thereby empowering them. Diminutive Dipthi Desai, who is married to a pharmacist, started off her university studies wanting to be an engineer. But, told that she was “too short” to be an engineer, Dipthi changed streams to pharmacy and “couldn’t have made a better decision.” Mother of two sons, Dipthi absolutely loves her profession, and thrives on the diversity, the challenge and the people interaction it offers. She is a wonderfully positive person, and a very knowledgeable, professional and welcome presence in this local community pharmacy.

Healthy Life Sensitive Teeth National Oral Month What causes teeth to be sensitive? Fluid moving through the dental tubules acts as a conductor for anything that is hot, cold or chemical. In sensitive teeth, the tubules are large and there are more of them than in non-sensitive teeth, and so more prone to being affected by unwanted stimulation. Sensitivity may occur when the dentine (second layer of the tooth) becomes exposed. Gum recession or loss of too much enamel are the most common causes of dentine exposure. Gum recession is usually a direct result of gum disease or over brushing. How do I treat sensitive teeth? • Visit your dentist regularly and ask them to assess the problem and give you advice. Have any fractured or chipped teeth repaired promptly. • Use low-abrasive toothpaste as highly abrasive toothpaste may lead to excessive wear in your enamel. Instead, brush twice daily with a toothpaste specially designed for sensitive teeth. This toothpaste helps to protect sensitive teeth. • Treat your gums and tooth enamel with care. Avoid brushing too firmly, flossing too vigorously, and picking at your gums. • Brush your teeth thoroughly but gently. Leaving plaque on the tooth surface may cause gingivitis, which can lead to receding gums, exposed dentine and tooth sensitivity. • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and end-rounded bristles. Healthy Life Combating Age-Related Conditions

Dr Grant Ladner

• Be aware of nutrient absorption: Changes occur with ageing that influence the nutritional requirements of older people. Stomach acid production decreases. This affects digestion and nutrient absorption – especially of vitamin B12, folic acid and iron. • Bone and joint health: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D is widespread and age-related decline in the body’s ability to absorb calcium can impact calcium levels. Taking a combination of omega-3 fatty acids with glucosamine can help maintain joint flexibility and mobility. • Immunity: New science has pointed to vitamin D as having immune-enhancing effects. Other studies suggest that immune function may be improved by supplementation with protein, vitamin E, zinc and other micronutrients. • Retaining muscle mass: Older adults experience a natural, age-related loss of muscle mass and strength call Sarcopenia. Seniors with high blood levels of vitamin D are likely to have better physical function according to another new study suggesting higher levels are recommended to ensure muscle health and physical function. Also, for the first time, a recent study from McGill University in Canada has shown a clear link between vitamin D levels and accumulation of fat in muscle tissue. • Healthy vision and eye health: The age-related eye disease study (AREDS) has shown that high levels of antioxidants such as beta carotene, vitamin A & C, zinc and copper, significantly reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration and its associated vision loss. The impact of carotenoid lutein on preserving vision and enhancing eye health has been well established and a recent study shows that daily supplement of lutein, combined with vitamin A may slow vision loss.

Healthy Life Why Should my Child Have an Eye Test? Children will rarely complain about poor vision, usually because they do not realise that the vision they have is less than perfect. It is therefore essential to get your child’s eyes tested to eliminate the possibility of them having an eye problem. An eye test can be performed from as early as three years old, but this age group would generally be tested by an Ophthalmologist. Children aged six and above can be comfortably tested by an Optometrist. Signs to look out for that may indicate a visual problem: • Sitting too close to the television. • Holding reading material very close to their faces (closer than the required minimum of 30cm). • Experiencing frequent headaches. • Squinting eyes or tilting head to view objects. • Difficulty paying attention in class. • Sudden decline Sarah Van Niekerk in class performance. • Copying down inClinical Psychologist correct information from the blackboard. M.A. Clin Psych (UKZN) PR. 0260347 • Frequent rubbing of eyes. • Skipping Special Interests: words or lines when reading or complainChild & Adolescent Therapies, Play Therapy, Adult Psychotherapies ing of words moving. Other signs include: • Abnormal alignment of eyes. • Excessive redness or tearing. • Poor visual tracking. • A white pupil instead of black. If left uncorrected, visual problems could have a long-lasting effect resulting in Amblyopia (commonly called lazy eye). However, if the visual disturbance is detected early and corrected, this may be prevented or reversed. Even if a child has had an eye examination previously which detected no problems, if they begin exhibiting any of the above symptoms, they should be retested. If spectacles are prescribed, then a yearly eye test is warranted as vision changes as children grow. Healthy Life All About Energy Have you been feeling tired and run down lately? Lacking in energy, concentration and drive? Most of us could probably benefit from taking some additional supplements. Energy is vital to staying awake, alert and alive. Running out of energy midday is just not an option for the modern man or woman who has to cope with busy schedules and everyday stressors. If you cannot get that quick snack to revitalise your energy levels, then the next best thing is an energy supplement, one that will give you energy to last you through the rest of your day. How to maintain energy: • Eat well-balanced meals. • Use caffeine and sugary snacks sparingly. • Get enough sleep and establish the habit of sleeping and waking up at consistent hours. • Delegate responsibility if you feel overworked. • Vary the assignments you’re working on to keep yourself stimulated. • Take a quick 10-minute break in your office with your eyes closed. • Exercise regularly. • Use a daily multivitamin energy enhancing supplement. Robyn Daniels, a nursery school teacher who has been using Ciplaton Capsules said: “Most energy supplements come in fizzy effervescents but I LOVE the capsule option Ciplaton offers.” Contact: Cipla Medpro (Pty) Ltd, 021 - 917 5620. Healthy Life Chiropractic: Helping you Reach your Fitness Goals Chiropractic can have a huge impact on reaching fitness goals as well as preventing injuries during training. However, there is no magic way to lose fat and get in shape. It is a process that requires discipline and motivation. If there is a joint misalignment in the body and exercise is performed, the stress placed on that joint creates unnecessary wear and tear and promotes injury. Injuries and pain can hamper progress because exercise cannot be performed or is avoided and in some cases the injury caused by the misalignment could be more severe requiring surgery. It is easier to prevent injuries by keeping the alignment correct therefore balancing the stress on the joints during exercise and this is what chiropractic does. Remember that the purpose of exercise is to get the heart rate up and to put stress on the muscles causing healthy microtears. The body then uses energy to repair the muscles in order to make them stronger for the next workout and additional fat burning is achieved in this way. If pain/injury is the reason for half-completed workouts or missed training sessions, then it’s obvious that the goal will take much longer to achieve. It is important to note how much of an impact pain can have on keeping motivated during a body transformation. Not only can chiropractic assist by removing many of the unknown factors that cause injuries, but injuries can be treated in a way to ensure that the training sessions that are lost are minimal and also strategic in order to aid the recovery. If your body is functioning optimally it will allow for more consistent intense training, less pain during the process and better results. Healthy Life Achieve Your Optimal Weight

As featured on the Doctors’ daytime TV show

You know what you should be eating. You know what exercise is ideal for your body and for your weight loss. The question is: why aren’t you doing it? What image, words or lifestyle come to mind when you hear the word “diet”? Most people think of restriction, lack, deprivation – all negative words. Most people have formed such distinct dislikes and negative associations about weight loss and eating that it’s almost impossible to achieve long term sustainable and balanced weight loss. As a personal trainer, nutritional therapist and wellness mentor over the past 12 years, Lara Brazier says it is clear that we as women have to identify our own views towards achieving our optimal weight and fitness, and work on any past misconceptions we may have taken on through all the years of diets, false promises and marketing. Lara says the best way to reach your goals is to: • Identify what your self-limiting beliefs involving your self-image and weight are. • Never use the word diet but rather lifestyle adjustment/change. • Focus on what you want to achieve, not on why you can’t achieve. • Not go to gym if you hate it (find something else you love and you will continue with it). • Plan your exercise and meals (decide on a few new habits to help boost your new goals and create new habits).

Beautiful Life Q & A: Face and Body Aesthetics Q: How do I treat sagging jowls and deep lines around my mouth? A: As we get older, sagging skin with jowl formation (loose skin and fat under the jaw line) become very common. Added to this, loss of skin elasticity, smile lines (nasolabial folds) are also very noticeable when the face is at rest. In the younger face, cheekbones are enhanced with fat pads that sit on top of the bone. As we age, these fat pads shrink and migrate downwards causing the skin to stretch and hang with jowl formation. Also, the lower eyelids stretch and elongate and, together with prominent nasolabial folds, create a sunken and drawn-in expression. The best way to counteract these effects and create a refreshed, youthful look, is to enhance cheek bones by injecting filler. This will create volume in the cheeks and lift the skin, defining the jaw and diminishing jowls. Perky cheeks also lessen the nasolabial folds and improve the under-eye area. Fillers can also be injected into the nasolabial folds alone. If the jowls consist mainly of fat, a course of radiofrequency for skin tightening together with phosphatidylcholine injections (which break down fat) can be administered. For full face revitalisation, a combination treatment of botox, filler injection, skin peels and mesotherapy can assist in rejuvenating ageing skin. Mesotherapy consists of fine micro injections of hyaluronic acid together with vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and other essential substances to provide hydration, firming, plumping and lifting. Beautiful Life The Riverside Spa Have you been to The Riverside Day Spa lately? One of my favourite spas, with friendly staff, stunning décor and great service, this gorgeous beauty haven just keeps getting better! Owner, Natalie Van Zyl, not only offers her valued clients an extensive range of treatments, but has now added laser hair removal, aesthetics, eyelash extensions and Evolve hair salon to the impressive list of services on offer. What more do you need and all under one roof!? Natalie is assisted by her two fabulous manageresses, Claudia Rodda, who has been in the industry for 18 years, and Stacey Schiefner who has travelled the world practising beauty therapy on cruise liners. This dynamic duo will make sure you are looked after very well indeed! I enjoyed a divine Dermalogica Age Smart anti-ageing facial with the bt-Micro, which was so intensive that my skin positively glowed afterwards! The bt-micro utilises rapid vibrations to loosen and remove dead skin cells leaving skin smoother and refined and my professional therapist, Gerda Reyneke, advised me on exactly what products my skin needed. Other products available include Thalgo, Lamelle and Lilian Terry aromatherapy oils. I was also treated to the ultra-relaxing Spa pedicure with a Caviar foot treatment which was absolute bliss! This pedi includes exfoliation, massage and my feet felt wonderfully soft and pampered. After treatments you can spend time relaxing in the “rest area” with a complimentary cappuccino. Martin Pearman from Evolve (formerly Head Boyz) is trained Toni & Guy style and is up to date with the latest trends and treatments. Beautiful Life Facial Oil that Heals Damage to Our Skin As we get older our faces show the telltale signs of the life we have lived. Stress, sleepless nights, smoking and airconditioned offices etc. can all age our skin. The only way to reverse ageing, and slow it down a little, says Claudette Whitehead of Sh’Zen, is to remember to exfoliate weekly and to make sure you use an oil that feeds and heals the skin. Sh’Zen has formulated an amazing 100% natural product that heals the damage we have done to our faces. The Sh’Zen PhytoExquisites™ Facial Oil contains the plant essence oils of Neroli, Jasmine and Rose in a superfine cocktail, ensuring that the essence is absorbed easily into the skin. Just a few drops revive, tone and reawaken the skin, leaving it radiant and luminous. Simply apply a few drops onto clean skin morning and evening and massage into the face and neck using upward circular movements to stimulate circulation. Rosehip, Camellia, Blackcurrant and Baobab oils in the formulation all help to condition and feed the skin whilst helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines. Apricot oil hydrates and protects the skin, whilst also helping to regenerate.

Young Life ADHD and Cogmed Training Working memory (WM), the brain’s ability to keep information for a short period of time in order to use it in our thinking, is crucial for planning, organisation, concentration, problem solving and remembering tasks. Children require WM to attend to instructions, remain focused and complete independent tasks like puzzles, maths problem solving, reading comprehension, learning and writing tests. WM deficits are exhibited in difficulties completing tasks independently, not focusing to grasp and follow instructions, flitting from one activity to the next etc. Attention is required for maintaining and manipulating information in WM, so the two are essentially inseparable. Research shows that most children with ADHD have moderate to serious weaknesses in WM. Weaknesses are more strongly related to inattention than hyperactivity/impulsivity. Developed by neuroscientists, Cogmed helps individuals of all ages improve attention by training their WM through computer-based exercises. It differs from other programmes as it is based on strong scientific research. Also training is adaptive, i.e. the complexity level for each exercise adjusts, in real time, for maximised training effect for each user. Several studies show that Cogmed leads to significant increases in WM and decreases in inattentive symptoms, as evidenced on brain scans, neuropsychology testing, parent and teacher rating scales. Children receiving medical intervention for ADHD achieve gains in WM beyond that provided by medication alone, with gains persisting after training ends. Young Life Natural Beauty for Kids Mangwanani African Spa, the beauty salon chain well known in KZN and beyond for its earthy, natural look and approach, will be launching a spa for kids later this year. The spa will be set within the uShaka Kids’ World area at uShaka Marine World and provide basic spa treatments for children aged four to 12. In keeping with Mangwanani’s natural and African style, products used on the children will be natural and organic, and the décor in the spa area will feature a delightful jungle theme. The focus on “natural” is an important one for the spa. Although there is a place for pampering and pretty nail polish etc., many mums are concerned that certain beauty products contain questionable ingredients. Others question the wisdom in applying “makeup” to such young children. In this vein, therefore, Mangwanani Kids’ Spa will focus on “treatments” (which are beneficial), not “pampering”. Treatments will consist of: a basic manicure, pedicure and shoulder massage. Strict parameters will be applied when treating children – e.g. the neck and shoulder massage does not go beyond the collarbone, the pedicure stops at the ankle etc. Therapists, too, are to be chosen with care. They will be picked for their suitability at working with children and trained in safety, security and first aid. But enough of the serious stuff. This spa is going to be fun! Replete with African children characters, outdoor ambience and a jungle environment, special gift shoes, typical face-paint dots, and the most incredible-feeling goo for squishing fingers and toes in – the Mangwanani Kids’ Spa is a place girls and boys will love and mums and dads will wish they could visit too! Young Life Ybike Extreme Balance Bike A few weeks ago we celebrated Cooper’s third year of magical existence at mr. Funtubbles at Gateway. It was such a lovely, fun and busy morning. The kids had a ball and needless to say, by the end of it all the parents were shrieking with joy as they bumped their way around the bumper car track. Once a child always a child! Coop chose his own cake and my heart melted at the request: a bright South African flag with a hand-painted picture of Madiba (aka Deeba) on it. The Queen of Cakes really outdid herself. It was a sight to behold as he blew out his candles after many practice runs at home. On his wish list in first place was the request for a “big boy’s bike” followed closely by a guitar. His godmom, Keli, pulled out all the stops by hunting down a bright yellow Angry Bird guitar. He has not put it down and walks around the house with his sunglasses on singing Three Brown Mouse. Be still my heart.

Unbeknown to him I tracked down the coolest “big boy bike” – the award-winning Ybike Extreme Balance Bike. Oh my, you should see this bad boy! It is bright orange and black and comes with all the bells and whistles of comfy and practical design. It can hold up to 25kgs and is suitable for age three and up. The whole concept of balancing on two wheels is taking some getting used to, but you should see him cruising along the beachfront now with a song in his heart and the wind blowing through his Liam Gallagher hair. Tiny Life Maternity and Nursing Bra A maternity bra is worn while you are expecting your baby. This bra will adjust with the “growing” support needs of your breasts. A nursing bra has a similar function as your breasts expand and shrink with every feed, however, it has a clasp that makes it easy to feed without taking your bra off. A maternity bra is a necessity for all expectant mothers but many mothers may not have decided whether they want to feed or not. To save money, buy a nursing bra because it expands like the maternity bra does and means that you can carry on wearing it if/when you decide to feed your baby. Whether to wear a wire in your maternity/nursing bra is entirely dependent on the size of your breasts. Most soft (nonwire) bras do not support larger breasts as well as a wire maternity/nursing bra will. Ensure that you are fitted correctly by a professional bra fitter. If your wire rubs on a very sensitive milk duct or gland you will be very uncomfortable and may not last the feeding process.

Everyday bras are not designed to accommodate breast enlargement. Considering that you may use your maternity/nursing bra for at least nine months and up to two years (depending how long you breastfeed for) it is worth the investment. Considering what breast surgery costs, a good professionally fitted maternity/nursing bra could land up costing you a lot less. It will also eliminate unnecessary stretch marks. Most stretch marks are caused by the sudden/ drastic weight change of your breasts rather than the actual growth. Tiny Life Cowgirlzzz Launches in South Africa Cowgirlzzz proudly presented their new label in sleeping bags and other cotton baby products recently at Kids’ Emporium Gateway. Leleti Khumalo, Ku Mtawarira and Julia James were among the guests who attended this informative, fun event, each of whom left with a personalised sleeping bag for their little ones. Cowgirlzzz is a new label in the children’s clothing category. This South African-based company produces cotton baby products with a main focus on sleeping bags. Originally Dutch, Cowgirlzzz founders Anne Wetselaar and Eva Lebens chose to support and grow the local economy by sourcing the materials and producing their products in South Africa. The products are practical, safe and beautiful. They use original Shweshwe fabric in some of their designs and have just introduced blankets and double-sided skirts as well. Sleeping bags include Born to be a Star (carefully designed to be used at home and on the go) and the Lala Kahle range (these come in soft cotton, in four different colours and with a unique long zip). The latter can be personalised. The Born to be a Star blankets in Shweshwe fabric are multifunctional – they can be used to cover baby or laid down as a playmat. The Stunning Star Skirt is double sided. By purchasing a Cowgirlzz product people can feel proud about the fact that they are not just giving their little ones the best quality product but they are also contributing to the growth of our economy and building our rainbow nation! Tiny Life Awaken Baby’s Senses Step into a wonderful world of colour and watch your baby develop and explore with their sense of touch and sight. The new Babi Magic range of sensory blankets is a nursery must-have for any baby. From the moment of birth, a baby experiences life through its senses. Because of their intriguing physical texture, tactile items invite babies and children to touch, rub and knead. All these actions stimulate sensors deep within the muscles and joints that encourage awareness of their body, especially fingers, hands and mouths. Babies are near-sighted and it is ideal to have a “blankie” close to them as opposed to a toy on the other side of their cot. Sensory play experiences may also help children regulate stress. The rhythmic, kinaesthetic movements of rubbing, squeezing, and so on, aid calming. These are all important experiences for a baby to regulate their own feeling states. The Babi Magic Range of blankets can also be used to swaddle since they are made from stretch cotton, to cover your baby, cover mom while feeding or to make a fashion statement when covering the pram during sleep time. The range consists of sensory blankets, sensory squares and dummy chain sensory squares.

Tiny Life A Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy and Caring Children Despite what researchers used to believe, studies are now finding that children can show signs of empathy and concern from a very early age. As moms, many of us are well aware of this fact, particularly when we see our babies act in a caring manner that warms our hearts. Not only is Pampers the country’s leading nappy brand, it is also a brand synonymous with caring. This is perhaps best evidenced by its recent UNICEF campaign which saw one life-saving vaccination donated to a mother and child in need, for every pack of Pampers nappies and wipes purchased. Pampers Institute panellist and parenting expert, Sister Lilian agrees with the need to teach children to be more compassionate and says, “In South Africa we have our very own home-grown model on how best to raise a happy, healthy and caring child. The spirit of Ubuntu is a Xhosa expression that simply means, ‘people are people through other people’. Ubuntu is an African word for a universal concept that we as mothers can use to guide us.” While children are born with their own unique personalities, Sister Lilian believes that it is our duty as parents to demonstrate to our little ones how truly important it is that they behave with kindness and a fair sense of responsibility. If we set happy, healthy and caring examples then this too, is how our bright stars will conduct themselves as they set off towards their futures. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 5 Hampers (containing 2 x Pampers Premium Care nappies & 2 x Sensitive wipes) to give away to 5 lucky readers. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Tweens & Teens’ Life Sit Straight, Young Lady! Young girls, posture and poise are as important in your life as the way you look. Your first impression comprises a combination of many things, but ultimately, it is how you present yourself for the first time that counts. If your grooming and clothing are in order, but your posture is slouchy or unfriendly, you have lost your first chance at making that great first impression! Besides making a concerted effort to sit correctly at the dinner table, at your desk or when meeting and socialising, there are other important factors that you, as a polite and confident young lady, need to take note of. Dr Paul Palmer, Durban Chiropractor, has the following advice for young ladies regarding maintaining a great posture throughout their young teen life: “Parents frequently ask me about the problems regarding heavy school bags and the long-term effects this could have on their children. My top two recommendations are as follows: First, textbooks need to be organised so that only the necessary ones are being taken in the schoolbags each day. Secondly, all bags should be double strapped AND worn with both straps. Most kids see this as ‘uncool’ but the fact is that walking around with a hunchback or scoliosis later in life is a far worse alternative. It’s the sustainable small changes we make over a continued period of time that will keep us healthy.” Fashion Nanny fashion task for the month: Organise your daily work load and only pack the necessary books you will need in your schoolbag. Don’t overload your bag! Yours in fashion... Fashion Nanny, in collaboration with Dr Paul Palmer (031 - 827 9698). Educated Life Learning Style For many parents, reading their child’s report can be an anxiety provoking exercise. Some may be delighted at their child’s progress, others may not be as content. If your child appears to be struggling, a way that could help them is to determine their dominant learning style. There are generally three different types of learning styles that children display. • Auditory learners prefer listening to explanations over reading them, and may like to study by reciting information aloud. This type of learner may want to have background music while studying, or they may be distracted by noises and need a quiet space to study. Talking to themselves, reciting important information or listening to an audio book may be most useful to them. • Kinaesthetic learners learn by doing and touching. They may have trouble sitting still while learning and they are better able to understand information by writing it down or doing hands-on activities. Writing things down multiple times, highlighting and underlining key phrases and doing hands-on activities can prove beneficial. • Visual learners process information by reading, looking at graphics, or watching a demonstration. Children with this learning style can grasp information presented in a chart or graph, but they may grow impatient listening to an explanation. Using flash cards, studying charts, tables, maps or drawing illustrations or colour-coding can assist the learner. If you would like your child assessed or if you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress contact Chandré Ezra. Educated Life Sports Talk by SharkSmart • Eating Right: Professor Tim Noakes, one of S.A.’s leading medical scientists, now advocates a low carbohydrate, high fat diet. His controversial stance has created mayhem amongst dietary and nutritional professionals. Regardless, what we need to agree on is the simple fact that our families eat too many carbohydrates! Especially the refined ones like sugar, white bread, rolls and rice. If you want your children to become healthy adults, reduce these types of foods and cut out fizzy drinks, sports drinks, juices, breakfast cereals, crisps, biscuits and sweets. Add more protein to their diets e.g. fish, meat and chicken as well as eggs and plenty of veggies. Find out more at www.sharksmart.co.za. • Bullying: The 2011 Discovery SharkSmart Pupil Wellbeing Survey showed that of the 12 500 KZN high school pupils surveyed, 33% reported being physically threatened at school in the previous 12 months and 50% were verbally abused. More worryingly, 63% said that they had witnessed bullying at their school in the past month, whilst the vast majority of pupils said they wouldn’t report bullying because they feared getting into trouble. To view The Sharks Anti-Bullying Campaign visit www.sharksmart.co.za. • Keeping It Fun: “Sport is supposed to be fun. And if you have fun while you train then the hard work is worth it every day and before you know it you’ll find yourself achieving your goals!” – Robyn Kime, Team Best 4 Kayak Centre Canoeist. • Life Healthcare Sharks Medical Centre: Remember to contact 031 – 312 7506 for your sports medicine related queries.

Jone recommended calamari (squid) as one of the best “green” category options in S.A. to eat. She also reported that Pick n Pay’s Sushi Bars are responsible partners of the SASSI programme, as are the restaurant franchises John Dory’s and Ocean Basket. Restaurant owners and their staff can be “SASSI” trained through courses held annually at uShaka Marine World. Sea World and KZN Science Centre also educate children through various marine programmes to develop a love for and knowledge of the marine world.

Jone spent her time largely explaining a little booklet that SASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) have produced as a guide for consumers when it comes to their consumption of fish. The booklet helpfully categorises fish into green (best choice), orange (think twice) and red (don’t buy) categories based on their sustainability. Red-black means it is illegal to buy/sell this fish. The booklet urges consumers to ask three questions before ordering fish at a restaurant or buying it from a shop. The questions are: “What fish is it?”, “What country is the fish from?” and “How was it caught?” Consumers can then check the booklet to see which category the fish falls into. If the fish isn’t listed they can SMS the name of the fish to 079 499 8795. They will receive an immediate reply indicating the category of the fish (I tested the number – the reply really is immediate!).

Educated Life It’s All in Your Mind

Kids’ Labels

Imagine if treating problematic symptoms was as simple as playing a video game — except that your mind is the controller. This concept isn’t only real; it’s called Neurofeedback, the procedure that treats a variety of symptoms— from ADHD to post-traumatic stress disorder — for which mainstream medicine still hasn’t found adequate long-term solutions. Neurofeedback is described as a procedure that stimulates the brain, as a method of treatment for various health conditions. Ailments that can be addressed with Neurofeedback are wide-ranging. Anxiety, depression, stress, clients suffering from autism, ADHD, migraine headaches, insomnia and age-related cognitive decline can all find relief after a series of sessions. In other words, if a problem is neurologically based, Neurofeedback can help resolve it. The process of Neurofeedback is simple enough: after an assessment that determines faulty brainwave functioning in the brain, an EQ Advantedge practitioner attaches various sensors onto a client’s scalp, their placement being unique to the individual and the symptoms being treated. The client then plays a video game or watches a video, designed specifically for Neurofeedback, controlling the outcome using nothing more than their mind. Positive results in the game or a clearly perceived video occur when brainwave frequencies reach a target range. The brain is stimulated and responds to positive reinforcement and is motivated to behave more optimally. Over time, this leads to lasting changes. The training is fun, without side effects and is long lasting. So, why just train your body if you can also train your brain to function optimally? At the EQ Advantedge Centre they specialise in Neurofeedback training for children, adults, executives and athletes. For more information visit: www.eq-advantedge.co.za.

MOSAIC PARTIES & MURALS

PERMANENT BUBBLE Use what? • Black cardboard • Clear nail polish • Rectangle shallow plastic container • Water • Plastic pipette/dropper

Marcelle Delew-Kappen 083 716 3628 marcelle@marcelledk.co.za www.marcelledk.co.za

MINI TOWN

• Hire for parties: R200 for venue & R12 per child & R12 per adult & jumping castle hire R300 • Normal entry fee: R15 per child (age 2 - 13) & R20 per adult • School groups: R8 per learner & R10 per teacher

Do What? 1. Place black cardboard in the plastic container 2. Add water until about 2cm high ( enough to cover the board fully) 3. Using the plastic pipette/ dropper, take up about 1cm of nail polish. We only need 1 drop of this. 4. Add 1 drop of the nail polish on to the surface of the water in the container. The nail polish will quickly expand to make a circular film on the surface of the water. 5. Let the circular film of nail polish dry for a while on the surface of the water. The ends will wrinkle slightly and the centre will a little longer to dry. (explain why the nail polish and water don’t mix = density; difference in density = difference in refractive index or how light bends and how fast light travels in different mediums) 6. Gently lift one end of the board out of the water, making sure you catch the edge of the thin circle on the board. 7. Let any excess water drip back into the container, then set the board onto some newspaper to dry 8. Let kids write their names on the paper using milky coloured pen. So What? This workshop introduces kid to the meaning of density as well as how light waves travel. When creating the permanent bubble, both these topics are very important. Density doesn’t allow the nail polish and water to mix because nail is less dense than water due to its oil base. Refraction of light and how fast light travels in water allows the bubble to be seen with all the different colours on its surface. Light travels slower through the nail polish which increases the refractive index. As the light travels slowly it is split into the colours of the spectrum. Relaxed Life Casual Day Casual Day, South Africa’s most successful fundraising project for persons with disabilities, has invited eight new organisations to join its beneficiary family: Autism South Africa (ASA), Down Syndrome South Africa, The National Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy (NAPCP), the South African National Deaf Association (SANDA), the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA), Alzheimer’s South Africa and the South African Disability Alliance (SADA). Casual Day stickers, caps and shirts will now be available through the new beneficiaries. Miss S.A. Marilyn Ramos has added Casual Day to her portfolio of causes that she will support this year. She is passionate about children, and has spent much of her reign so far advocating and caring for vulnerable children. By supporting the Casual Day campaign, she is helping to raise awareness of the needs of all persons with disabilities. Last year Casual Day raised a staggering R22.2 million. That is 10% more than the year before. All in all, the project has raised R170 million since its inception 18 years ago. Donations are raised R10 at a time for a Casual Day sticker. This year Casual Day is on Friday 6 September and the theme is Go Big. Visit the new website at www.casualday. co.za to find out how you can go big this year. Stickers are available at all Edcon stores, which includes the following brands: Edgars, Jet, JetMart, Boardmans, CNA, Red Square and LEGIT. Stickers will also be available at Absa, Game and DionWired stores, Checkers, Checkers Hyper or any of the participating beneficiary organisations (visit website for full list). Relaxed Life Action in the Berg

Ndumu River Lodge

I love the Berg. The calm, mature presence of the mountains, night time silence and crisp view of the stars, make a holiday here a rejuvenating experience for body and soul. I stayed at Three Cities Alpine Heath Resort in the Northern Drakensberg in July with my family and had the best five days of my year so far. Intent on some “action”, we “signed up” for a variety of outdoor activities offered at the resort and nearby. Guided hikes on different trails are conducted every day and three times a day during peak season. We especially enjoyed the Kilham Trail. Our guide, Richard Oats, is particularly enthusiastic about nature and made the walk enjoyable with titbits of information about the flora and fauna in the area. Longer day hikes can be arranged but I recommend calling ahead to organise (e.g. for the Alpine Signature Hike). Horse riding is another worthwhile activity and my daughter and I even learnt to canter while enjoying the glorious weather and open views. All Out Adventures, just a five-minute drive from Alpine Heath, offers lots of fun adventures and I braved a fear of heights to do the “Extreme Cable Tour”, an exhilarating and scenic ride on 900m of cable between seven forested platforms. With a bit of tennis, hilariously inept putt putt games and competitive poolside quiz competitions thrown in, our “action” holiday at Alpine Heath was great and comes highly recommended to others wanting the same.

Enjoy an adventure-filled long Weekend in Maputuland Just R420pp sharing on a bed & breakfast basis, or block book a group of 10 or more persons sharing B&B at ONLY R375pp Bring your own mountain bike, hire a canoe, fish for tiger on the Pongola River, visit nearby game reserves, walk around freshwater pans or just chill out at the swimming pool! Relaxed Life Tips for Safe, Stress-free Pet Travel

Ladies’ Beginner Golf Coaching Treat yourself to a new lifestyle with the unique and exciting Ladiesʼ Beginner Golf - the ultimate golfing programme designed especially for you.

• Travel Planning: If you are staying in a hotel, ensure that it is pet-friendly and that you have read their pet policy carefully. If your pets are staying in a kennel or if you have hired a pet sitter, ensure that you have received references vouching for their services. Provide an up-to-date emergency contact number list (including vet’s details) as well as a list of instructions e.g. for feeding times and medication.

Cotswold Downs (Hillcrest)

Andrew on 082 451 8953 andrew@dicksongolf.co.za

• Pet Vaccinations, Tagging and Chipping: Make sure your pets’ vaccinations are up to date – this is especially important to protect them against rabies. Always travel with your pets’ vaccination booklet or certificates. Ensure your pets are microchipped and are wearing indentification tags with your updated contact details in case of an emergency. Also apply a trusted tick and flea product before you leave to protect your pets from fleas and ticks that can endanger their health. • Packing the Doggy Bag: Remember to pack food, medicine, a leash and a tagged collar, dog baggies and whatever else your beloved pooches will need to feel safe and comfortable away from home.

“WESLEY” SAR CLASS 19D 2685 - IN SERVICE

• Road Trippin’ Pooch: When travelling in the car, keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or pet carrier that is large enough for them to stand, lie down and turn around in. Comfortable bedding is always welcome. Stop every so often so that your pets can walk around and stretch their legs, relieve themselves and stay hydrated – this will avoid unnecessary accidents in the car. NEVER leave your pets unattended in an unventilated, parked vehicle.
