Our beautiful cover family this month is the Nxele family from Howick. Mom Makabelo is a key accounts manager in a state-owned entity and dad Phakaman is an electricity manager in a municipality. Baby Khumo is seven months and three weeks old and her name means “wealth”. “We named her Khumo because we feel we are super rich by having her. She is our first-born, and a first granddaughter to our parents,” says her mom. “She’s our greatest blessing and the most valuable gift from God. She is so friendly and her smile is contagious. One person she loves the most is her father
- her look when her father enters a room is priceless. We discovered when she was three months that she loves music.” As a family they love watching TV together, going to the mall and going to church every Sunday.
Advice to new parents: “Get a good nanny - as young working parents, we had to find a good nanny who we employed during the pregnancy and we could teach her the routine while we were still on maternity leave,” explains Makabelo.
“We were adamant about breastfeeding so I started expressing when our daughter was six-weeks-old and started to train her to drink her milk from the bottle at that age during the day. I still express daily at work during my lunch hour and tea breaks and it’s working well for us.” “We love the unconditional love that has come with parenting and seeing our product - our daughter - grow,” concludes Makabelo. Ingredients 1.3kg chicken, cut into pieces ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 tspn salt 1 tspn paprika ¼ tspn sage ¼ tspn ground black pepper ½ cup butter Directions Preheat oven to 230 degrees C. Mix flour, salt, paprika, sage and pepper together in a Ziploc bag. Add the chicken pieces into the bag and shake until well coated. Melt butter/margarine in a baking dish in the preheated oven. Anxiety and Anxiety Disorder
As humans, we experience a broad range of emotions which serve an important role in helping us to adapt to different life situations. Anxiety is one of our most important emotions. What is anxiety? It is the state of emotion that becomes activated in the face of danger or threat. Anxiety is a warning signal of this threat. We are probably all familiar with the increased heart rate, sweating, shaking and changed breathing which occurs when we are anxious. Because anxiety is triggered by perceptions of threat or danger, it enables us to survive. But, and this is a large but, there is good or healthy anxiety, and there is bad or unhealthy anxiety. Healthy anxiety (such as we might feel if someone threatens to attack us) is a protection. Bad anxiety is a

burden in our lives. Good anxiety is like a functional burglar alarm that goes off when there is an attempted burglary. We are able to protect our house and ward off intruders. Bad anxiety is like a faulty burglar alarm that constantly goes off when there are no intruders. We become afraid as we search for the burglars. The police or alarm company arrives, but there is no threat. What a waste of resources! Unhealthy anxiety is anxiety that occurs in the face of little or no threat. This is called an anxiety disorder. Anxiety

disorders are very common and can range in severity from being mild to quite incapacitating. But the good news is that these disorders are fully treatable, and the earlier they are treated the better the prognosis or outcome. Anxiety disorders are best treated by a combination of psychiatric medications and psychological therapy. By Dr Graham Lindegger.
