Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 129 million children worldwide. ADHD, over a lifespan, differs in presentation. Symptoms are dependent on the developmental stage of the individual. Stereotypically, in preschool age, ADHD is characterised by hyperactivity, difficulty in co-operation with peers and non-compliance with instructions. In adolescents, hyperactivity lessens, conflicts with parents, risk-taking behaviours and impulsivity become predominant. In adulthood, inattention remains and may be accompanied by substance misuse, infidelity, the disintegration of relationships with peers and poor adherence to career choice. ADHD is a complex impairment often accompanied by other challenges such as: • Hyper focus (inability to shift attention from points of interest) • Poor sleep initiation (6% of children use melatonin for sleep pattern problems) • Time insensitivity or www.mumsmail.com

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

In South Africa, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is commemorated annually in September to encourage women to do screening and prevent cervical cancer. The goal of screening for cervical cancer is to find cervix cell changes and early cervical cancers before they cause symptoms. Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among South African women. Women have a 1 in 42 lifetime risk of cervical cancer (NCR 2014). It can be successfully treated if detected in the early stages, so it is important that women are aware of symptoms and what is normal for their bodies.

Symptoms include: Abnormal bleeding between periods, heavier and longer menstrual period, discharge, bleeding, pain during intercourse/after menopause, increased urinary frequency. Risk factors: Cervical cancer is mainly caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a common virus spread through skin to skin contact, body fluids and sexual intercourse. Failure to use protection during sexual

www.mumsmail.com

intercourse, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), multiple sexual partners, early sexual debut, and use of oral contraceptives all increase your risk. Women with HIV infection also have a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Furthermore, being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, poor dietary habits, smoking and exposure to chemicals increases risk too.

Reduce Risk through Pap Smears Having regular Pap smears can detect abnormal cells in the cervix that could develop into cervical cancer. Screening involves taking a swab of the cervical cells. It is uncomfortable, but painless. When abnormal cells are identified and removed, in many cases it is prior to cancer cells actually developing. Early diagnosis and treatment of precancerous lesions prevents up to 80% of cervical cancers, in high resource countries, where cervical cancer screening is routine.

per lifetime, starting at the age of 30 years or older, with a 10 year interval between each smear. Who should have a Pap smear? All women who have been sexually active, should start having Pap smears between ages 18 to 20 years. Every eligible woman should preferably have a Pap smear at least every 3 years. Note: • It is better to have a Pap smear at a less optimal time, than not at all. • Routine cervical screening is not required for women under the age of 18 years, even if they are sexually active. • If a woman is 70 years old and, within the last 5 years, had two normal Pap Smears, she need not continue with Pap smears. Contact your local CANSA Care Centre to arrange for a Pap smear, or if you live in a remote area enquire about scheduled CANSA Mobile Health Clinic visits to your area. Your health practitioner can also assist you.

Women making use of public sector screening services are Visit www.cansa.org.za for entitled to three free Pap smears more info.

Wendy’s Dolphin Swim School

In 1992 Wendy Scott opened Wendy’s Dolphin Swim School. “Over the past 27 years I have found teaching swimming very rewarding and fulfilling. I love being in the presence of children, as I believe I have the patience and passion. I love teaching children one of life’s vital skills,” says Wendy.

“My teaching career has taught me not only to deal patiently with children from all backgrounds, but also to deal with parents. I am now teaching the second generation of swimmers whose parents came to me for swimming lessons many years ago. This is due, in part, to the relationships built over the years.” Wendy stresses that swimming lessons are important because they not only help to teach your child proper swimming techniques, but also encourages them to be independent in the water. Why should you learn to swim? “It’s essential that every child learns to swim, especially to be water-safe. But there are so many levels of swimming and benefits that come along the way. Introduce your child to swimming early on so that they have the skill for their whole life. This can help improve their overall physical and mental health. Swimming has many benefits and applications in life, making it an important life skill everyone needs to learn, whether as a child or in adulthood. The most important aspect of knowing how to swim is staying safe in and around water,” concludes Wendy.
