Gastroenteritis in Children

It’s winter and the rotavirus is back, causing diarrhoea and vomiting in children - this is called gastroenteritis.

Viruses are the most common cause of gastroenteritis and the rotavirus is the most common viral cause, but since the introduction of a vaccine, given from the age of six weeks, the incidence is now significantly reduced. Other viruses also cause gastroenteritis and some bacteria also cause gastroenteritis – this is commonly known as food poisoning.

Parents must be patient, nurse the child with fluid support and do not rush to solid food. Once the stools return to normal and vomiting settles, only then can the child return to a normal diet and gain weight. All children will get gastroenteritis at some point, sometimes several times. The sooner parents learn to use oral rehydration therapy, the less the chances of dehydration. Children are small and dehydrate easily, especially with refusal to drink sufficient rehydration fluids, persistent vomiting and profuse watery stools. Seek medical help early. Top Tips for Healthy Winter Skin Cold, dry air can leave your skin itchy, red, and irritated. Combat dry winter skin with these tips for retaining your skin’s natural moisture.

Modify Your Facial Skin-Care Regimen for the Season During the winter months, choose cream-based cleansers, and apply toners and astringents Invest in a Humidifier to Maximise sparingly, if at all. Many astringents contain Moisture alcohol, which can further dry your skin. And Using a humidifier in your home or office will add don’t forget your lips. Applying a moisturising balm moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin can help heal dry, cracked lips and keep them hydrated. from getting chapped. Limit Shower Time and Temperature It may be tempting to take a long, steamy shower, but your skin will be much better-served with a five to 10 minute lukewarm shower (or bath). You should also avoid using excessively hot water when washing your hands - if the water causes your skin to turn red, it’s too hot. Opt for Gentle, Fragrance-Free Cleansers The wrong soap can worsen itchy, dry skin. For instance, regular bar soaps may contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Instead, wash with a fragrance-free, moisturising cleanser or gel.

Moisturise Frequently, Especially Your Hands Maintain healthy skin by moisturising after washing up. Wear waterproof gloves when washing dishes or cleaning around the house. Remember to Eat Right and Stay Hydrated Sometimes when skin is very dry, it can be helped by foods or supplements that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids. Static Electricity Experiment They say opposites attract and that couldn’t be more true with these fun static electricity experiments. Find out about positively and negatively charged particles using a few basic items - can you control if they will be attracted or unattracted to each other?

Instructions: Rub the 2 balloons one by one against the woollen fabric, then try moving the balloons together, do they want to or are they unattracted to each other?

the balloon on your hair again hold the balloon close to the can and watch as it rolls towards it, slowly move the balloon away from the can and it will follow.

What you’ll need: • 2 inflated balloons with string attached • Your hair • Aluminium can • Woollen fabric

Rub 1 of the balloons back and forth on your hair then slowly pull it away and look in a mirror.

What’s happening? Rubbing the balloons against the woollen fabric or your hair creates static electricity. This involves negatively charged particles (electrons) jumping to positively charged objects.

Put the aluminium can on its side on a table, after rubbing

When you rub the balloons against your hair or the fabric they become negatively charged, they have taken some of the electrons from the hair/ fabric and left them positively charged. Your positively charged hair is attracted to the negatively charged balloon and starts to rise up to meet it. This is similar to the aluminium can which is drawn to the negatively charged balloon as the area near it becomes positively charged, once again opposites attract. In the first experiment both the balloons were negatively charged after rubbing them against the woollen fabric, because of this, they were unattracted to each other.
