Big sister Scarlett is 11 and says she has waited her WHOLE LIFE for her sister - sixmonth-old Sophia Grace (three months old in the cover photo). Scarlett adores drama and fashion and says one day she will be a fashion designer. “We

can’t wait to see where her little life takes her,” says her proud mom. “As for little Sophs, well her journey is just beginning and we are having such fun watching her grow. Scarlett is my right-hand man. Doing this new baba road with such a big gap has so many rewards; the first being that when you are that little bit older you just choose to enjoy the moments for what they are and don’t panic about what you SHOULD be doing… even at two o’clock in the morning!” “The second reward about having such a big age gap is that Sophia has her big sister

by her side, so we constantly have another pair of very willing and very capable hands that love to sing and dance, play and tell stories - so that we can get dinner on, run the bath or even get on top of some work admin,” explains Nicole. She says the greatest reward of this big age gap is to stand back and watch the life-skill of nurturing and loving a little soul develop in Scarlett. “It leaves us with the added joy of knowing there is one more little tool Scarlett will leave home with one day,” she concludes. Emdoneni Lodge and Spa as described by my good friend Mo, who is very experienced in the hospitality industry: “Stunning luxurious rooms. Crisp clean bedding and large bathroom and shower spaces. Scrumptious healthy breakfast with a selection of hot dishes, fruit, cereals, pastries and teas and coffee. The visit to the Zululand Cat Conservation was mind-blowing which covered several types of African cats from the wild African cat to the majestic Cheetah. Stunning wildlife spotted as you enter/exit the property and the wildlife have adjusted to vehicles passing by so they don’t run off, which gives you ample time to take pictures. A turndown service was provided and a bar fridge is available in the rooms. Waiter service is available at the swimming pool if you would like a cocktail or a cup of tea! Dinner was pleasant with a selection of meat and veg options.” So what are you waiting for – go and grab your own little piece of heaven, even if it’s just for a weekend! Jungle Fever: A Roaring Success! The 14th Annual Mum’s Mail ‘Jungle Fever’ High Tea was held on Friday 6 September at The Globe at Suncoast. The dress code was ‘Jungle/Animal Print’ and the guests really had fun with this theme – the outfits were amazing, and there were prizes for the Top 3 Best Dressed Ladies plus a prize for the Best Dressed Table of 10! This exclusive event aims to raise funds for The Sunflower Fund to help them create awareness and education about blood stem cell donation, as well as to recruit more blood stem cell donors. Guests enjoyed an extensive entertainment line-up with the likes of ECR’s Darren Maule as MC and Jane Linley-Thomas and Paul Bushell of KindessCan as guest speakers, along with www.mumsmail.com

Peach Piche who gave a moving motivational message to the 500+ ladies in attendance. Comedian Jem Atkins was also there to lighten the mood and get the guests laughing. There were amazing treats for all the guests, including an exclusive gift courtesy of B.O.N Natural Oils. A scrumptious breakfast was served by Eat Greek Caterers which included a delicious slice of Chateau Gateaux’s Vanilla Dream cake for each guest (very indulgent)! Besides the guest speakers, there were dancers to entertain guests, a free cappuccino and a glass of champagne for each lady, a pampering station, lots of shopping, a fun photo booth and of course a super goodie bag packed with treats. The 10

pop-up shops were a huge success, with an amazing range of top-class products for guests to browse and buy. As always the ever-popular surprise envelopes and raffle prizes were a hit, and the winning ladies walked away with some superb prizes. Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Know Your Breasts When checking one’s breasts, the following changes should be noted and further assessed: • Change in size or shape of the breast • Breast lump • Skin changes such as puckering or dimpling • Redness or rash on the skin or nipple • Change in the appearance of the nipple • Nipple discharge • Persistent pain in the breast or armpit • Swelling in the armpit or collarbone Any of the above-mentioned changes require further evaluation by a clinician. Imaging studies such as mammography and/or ultrasound may be requested,

and if necessary, further evaluation with a needle biopsy may be performed for definitive assessment. Breast screening In South Africa, image-guided screening for breast cancer is carried out with mammography, performed annually from 40 years of age. Mammography is essential to detect signs of breast cancer that may not be palpable (i.e. clinically occult disease). In patients with dense breast tissue, the sensitivity of mammography is reduced and therefore supplementation with ultrasound is performed. In high-risk patients, in addition to mammography, screening

for breast cancer may be performed with MRI. Breast cancer screening ultimately requires a personalised approach best suited to the individual’s age, cancer risk and breast density. National Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Peace, love, security and respect for human rights are the cornerstones for human dignity and life, more so for persons with disabilities. National Down Syndrome Awareness Day is commemorated to create awareness about Down syndrome and falls on 20 October each year. Down syndrome is the most common and naturally occurring chromosomal genetic condition and is the largest single cause of intellectual disabilities. In South Africa, one in every 500 babies is born with Down syndrome each year. It is therefore vital to raise awareness and dispel

the myths that surround Down syndrome and to change society’s pre-conceived ideas and prejudice that they might have. Persons with Down syndrome are still excluded from mainstream society and this adversely affects their rights and freedoms. What is Down syndrome? Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder arising at the time of conception. There is an extra number 21 chromosome (Trisomy 21) which causes delays in physical and intellectual development. The exact cause of Down syndrome is currently unknown. It is not related to

race, age, religion and socioeconomic status and is one of the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorders. Down syndrome is characterised by a variety of unique features and a wide range of disabilities in physical and cognitive areas of development. We all share a responsibility to work together to build tolerance of differences and wipe out ignorance by joining hands and supporting National Down Syndrome Day. Alone we can do so little together we can achieve so much! To find out how you can contribute, visit www. downsyndrome.org.za.

Anxiety and Anxiety Disorder As humans, we experience a broad range of emotions which serve an important role in helping us to adapt to different life situations. Anxiety is one of our most important emotions.

What is anxiety? It is the state of emotion that becomes activated in the face of danger or threat. Anxiety is a warning signal of this threat. We are probably all familiar with the increased heart rate, sweating, shaking and changed breathing which occurs when we are anxious. Because anxiety is triggered by perceptions of threat or danger, it enables us to survive. But, and this is a large but, there is good or healthy anxiety, and there is bad or unhealthy anxiety. Healthy anxiety (such as we might feel if someone threatens to attack us) is a protection. Bad anxiety is a burden in our lives. Good anxiety is like a functional burglar alarm that goes off when there is an attempted burglary. We are able to protect our house and ward off intruders. Bad anxiety is like a faulty burglar alarm that constantly goes off when there are no intruders. We become afraid as we search for the burglars. The police or alarm company arrives, but there is no threat. What a waste of resources! Unhealthy anxiety is anxiety that occurs in the face of little or no threat. This is called an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are very common and can range in severity from being mild to quite incapacitating. But the good news

is that these disorders are fully treatable, and the earlier they are treated the better the prognosis or outcome. Anxiety disorders are best treated by a combination of psychiatric medications and psychological therapy. At Akeso Clinic, they have a team of psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists with the expertise and experience to treat these disorders. Milder anxiety disorders are treated on an outpatient basis. More severe anxiety disorders are more inclined to respond better to our comprehensive inpatient programme. By Dr Graham Lindegger. Protect Your Eyes from Too Much Exposure to Blue Light

Torga Optical offers a range of affordable and attractive blue light blocking lenses starting from just R300!

shielding your eye from the harmful effects of blue light.

Short-wavelength, high energy blue light scatters more easily than other light, which means that one cannot easily focus upon it. If you’re looking at a computer screen, smartphone or other digital device that emits blue light, this unfocused visual light reduces contrast. This can result in the user straining their eyes. Blue light is not all bad - however, the regularity of use and proximity of digital devices to the eye can result in too much exposure. Exposure to blue light at night, especially via digital devices, can result in disturbed sleeping patterns. Milder exposure to blue light can be treated with normal tinted lenses. For more prolonged exposure, special blue light blocking lenses and UV420 protective lenses are often recommended when it comes

Torga Optical offers easy solutions to reduce blue light exposure and digital eye strain. Torga Optical’s Blue Blocker Anti-Reflection coating can be applied to any pair of glasses. Their latest technology UV420 lens material offers not only blue light blocking but protection from UV radiation as well. You can upgrade any pair of glasses in Torga Optical to UV420 protection from just R300. Torga Optical Spring Promotion now on! The school aims to prepare their girls for a future that embodies change, by encouraging the girls to grow their independence and leadership skills, as well as to learn through self-discovery in a 21st Century learning environment, incorporating critical thinking, curiosity, creativity, collaboration and co-operation. Your daughter can benefit from being in an all-girls’ school that understands the dynamics at play and provides an education specifically www.mumsmail.com

designed to meet her needs and developmental stage. St Mary’s has an excellent track record of their girls gaining places at the university of their choice. A greater percentage of pupils from girls’ schools go on to study at tertiary institutions. Girls’ schools prepare and inspire pupils with pertinent knowledge by educating them to be resilient and confident. There is no obstacle preventing girls from exploring a career in any area. To achieve their best, girls need to be challenged in the right way and be in an environment which constantly reminds them that there is an enormous potential and power in being a girl. science experiment: Spinning Marbles

Science Question: Can you fight gravity?

Supplies needed: • Hot glue gun • 4 to 11 marbles The Experiment Using the hot glue, glue three of the marbles together into a triangle shape. Glue the fourth marble to the centre of the triangle, making a pyramid of sorts. Put your pile of marbles on a flat surface, balance it on one of its ends and spin the marbles. Gravity usually makes things fall. Try balancing the marbles in an “upside-down pyramid” without spinning it – you can’t.

The Outcome Your marble pyramid should have kept spinning for a while but could not balance by itself.

Safety first! Using a glue gun is an acquired skill. Adults can complete this part for younger participants.

Why it worked In order for the pile of marbles to stay upright on the table, you need to counteract gravity. As you spun the marbles, you made an axis for the marbles to move around. The momentum of the spin kept the spinning top pyramid upright. If there was no friction and the top was perfectly balanced, it would keep spinning for a very long time, indefinitely, much like our planet Earth.

Try this! Have a spinning top contest. See which spinning marbles will spin the longest. You can even have a “battle” and try to spin the marbles into each other. See if the force of your marble pile will interrupt or change the axis of the other spinning marbles’ path.

Is Bedwetting Keeping you up at Night? 2% of over-16s are still wetting the bed on a semi regular basis • The problem is more common with boys than with girls • There is a hereditary element. If the father had the problem, the child is 44% likely to have it too. If both parents had the problem this increases the risk to 77% The key thing is not to blame or shame your child. Instead, focus on positive encouragement and practical steps you can take together. Nocturnal enuresis is the medical term but most people think of it as ‘wetting the bed’! Whatever you call it, it can be a very distressing problem when it continues as a child gets older. Children often feel frustrated and that it is their fault, some go so far as to try and hide the issue from their parents due to the extreme embarrassment. Bedwetting facts that most parents are unaware of: • Nearly 10% of children over 9 years and up to

Hypnosis is a wonderful tool for helping to break unwanted habits and it may help with bedwetting, provided the problem is not medical. It also helps relieve the stress and anxiety that is almost always felt when children wet the bed. Source: Sophie Nortje, Hypnoclear, www.hypnoclear.com. WIN! WIN! WIN! Totem Teepees:

Handmade with Love in South Africa Totem Teepees are incredible toys - they inspire imaginative play and magically whisk children off to worlds they can only dream of! At Totem Teepee they believe in their teepees. They believe in the benefits of a child having his/her very own play space. Teepees are not just meant to look great in a perfectly Pinterest-worthy playroom… they have a function - and that’s what drives them. At Totem Teepe, they know how beneficial teepees are, and that’s why they make them. For you. For your children. The teepees are also endorsed by occupational

therapists, teachers, speech therapists and doctors. Totem Teepees create cocoon-like spaces for overwhelmed children to escape from the chaotic activity they’re faced with in most school and home environments. They’re a great place to curl up quietly with a book too. Legend has it that Totem Teepees are often used as headquarters for spy meetings, weird and wonderful board games, taming tigers, and keeping angry pet dragons calm and hidden away from suspicious moms (just like the mom in ET)! Totem Teepees are investments in the

Craft Activity: Painted Rocks

Cactus Pet Rocks How much cuter can these pet cactus rocks be? And they are so easy to make too! This is a craft your kids will LOVE! Here’s what you need: • Rocks – choose them based

on the size of your terracotta pot. A flat surface area is needed for the googly eyes. • Googly eyes • Outdoor acrylic paint – green, white & bright green • Mini terracotta pots • Hot glue (adults only) or glue dots for kids

Directions: First select your rocks Clean your rocks before painting Paint with your outdoor paint. Try two coats of the lighter green to ensure you get complete coverage. Once you have the green painted, use the white to create different cactus designs! Try dots, hash marks and lines and stars. Now glue on your googly eyes! Use hot glue or glue dots. Now they are ready to go into their pots! If you’d like them to stand higher in their pots, use a little bit of paper towel or foam in the bottom of the pots. Source: www. thebestideasforkids.com.
