Easy Ways to Improve Your Household Recycling Clean Up Your ‘Hood for Good Not enough South Africans are recycling, and depending on your local recycling services, around half of what goes in your bin could potentially be recycled and not end up in landfills, and recycling is an excellent way to save energy and conserve the environment. Did you know that: • One recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for three hours. • One recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. • One recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for three hours. • 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. • The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5 000 hours. • On average, 16% of the money you spend www.mumsmail.com

on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish. If you’re not already, use local recycling facilities such as glass bottle banks, participate in any recycling service your municipality may offer and if one isn’t available, use the services of a private recycling company. Remember! • Be sure also to give recyclable items a quick clean to remove any residue, whether it’s remnants in a yoghurt pot or conditioner bottle; it’s better to make sure it’s clean and dry before you pop it in the recycling bin. • Don’t get carried away though; certain items don’t belong in your recycling bin. Think nappies, plastic carrier bags and food waste. Putting the wrong things in your recycling bin results in ‘contamination’ which means your recycling could be rejected and end up in the landfill. Kidney Health for Everyone, Everywhere

The theme for World Kidney Day 2019 (observed on 8 March) is “Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere” - which highlights the increasing burden of kidney disease and the need to provide basic health care and screening to the general population, to detect and treat conditions early and prevent progression to kidney failure. Kidney disease often goes undetected in the general population, but children and adolescents are at an even greater risk as the causes of kidney disease differ from that of adults and the signs are often subtle. Babies can be born with kidney and bladder defects due to developmental abnormalities during pregnancy. Kidney disease in children can occur as a result of congenital abnormalities, genetic or immune abnormalities, or infection. Parents should look out for: • Decreased or increased amounts of urine passed • Swelling of the face and body • Burning or pain when passing urine • Blood in the urine • Change in colour or

odour of urine • Bed wetting Patients may present to their doctor with other signs such as failure to gain weight, unexplained fevers, vague abdominal pains, anaemia, abdominal mass, or headaches. Depending on the cause, kidney conditions can be treated with steroids, other immunosuppressant drugs or antibiotics. Obstructive/developmental abnormalities of the urinary system may require surgical intervention. Dialysis may be required when kidney failure develops. Transplantation is the definitive treatment, however in childhood this can be a challenge due to the age, size and long term adherence to treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease in children is therefore important to prevent progression to end stage kidney failure where possible.

Too Young or Afraid of a Mammogram?

Studies show that an abnormal Thermogram is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer; 10 times more significant than a family history of the disease. There is no compression and no radiation involved. Prevention Thermography is about breast health. This very early warning gives a woman time to take a pro-active approach to improve her breast health so she has a much better chance of detecting cancer at its earliest stage and preventing invasive tumour growth. How does it work? Medical infrared imaging is based on detecting the heat produced by increased blood vessel circulation and metabolic changes associated with a tumour’s genesis and growth. It detects thermal signs suggesting a pre-cancerous state of the breast or the presence of an early tumour that is not yet large enough to be detected by physical examination,

mammography, or other types of structural imaging. Oncology report “Mammography in women 40 to 49 years of age is associated with a small but nonsignificant increase in the risk of dying of breast cancer before age 60. Caution should be exercised when recommending mammographic screening to women before age 50.” (Reference: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC4189562/) Find a qualified thermography centre EMI (Electronic Medical Interpretation) is an internationally qualified Interpretation service with specifically EMI trained Medical Doctors. Pilates Etc

Vanessa Ankiah is a certified Pilates Instructor and Personal Trainer, with international credentials, having worked for Saudi princesses and ambassadors while residing in the Middle East. She provides wellness packages for corporate companies and runs a private Pilates studio in La Lucia, offering clients a personal Pilates experience in a tranquil environment. She was recently a finalist in the USN Face Of Fitness 2018 competition. She believes in leading a holistic lifestyle in order to have full body synergy and equilibrium. There are many benefits of doing Pilates. It develops every aspect of physical fitness, including strength, flexibility, co-ordination, endurance, improved balance, spatial and body awareness, improved concentration and muscle tone and also improves posture and body alignment. The main principles of Pilates are: concentration, control centring, lateral breathing, flowing movement, postural alignment, ribcage placement, scapular stability, pelvic placement

(neutral), leg and foot positioning. One cannot underestimate the benefit of simple exercises that support the deep postural muscles of the trunk, awareness of neutral alignment, and supple use of the shoulders and hips. It is best to learn exercises that can be practiced at home between scheduled Pilates sessions. Some of the movements in the Pilates system are very difficult and challenging and should be avoided for individuals with significant back pain or degenerative disc disease. “Always remember while Pilates is an exceptional way to help back problems/injuries, ensure you find a professional instructor and start off with one-on-one sessions. Joining a Pilates group class could worsen the injury in the long run, if the repertoire is incorrectly executed. Therefore, ensure you are in the right hands,” advises Vanessa.

Mooimaak Makeovers: Ronel Nel

A busy seamstress, Ronel Nel required a certain amount of confidence to work with the public each day. Thing is, she was being teased about her wrinkles as well as her teeth, and it became the motivating factor for her to participate in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show. Fortunately, the Skin Renewal team led by Dr Graham Duncombe and therapist Liza Schoeman, gave Ronel a series of treatments that smoothed out her wrinkles plus she got a smile makeover thanks to brilliant dentist Dr JJ Serfontein.

A new nose Ronel’s slightly crooked nose was corrected via a 3D non-surgical rhinoplasty. Hyaluronic acid filler was injected into depressed areas to fill them out and create a smoother-looking profile while a special PDO thread, called the broom, straightened the bridge. The result was a much straighter looking nose - no knives required! Get that glow Notice Ronel’s radiance? She was given microdermabrasion treatments that involved using a pen-like machine to blow a stream of micro-fine crystals across the surface of the skin to gently polish it. “I really enjoyed these treatments,” said Ronel. “I could see the improvement in my skin’s texture and overall appearance. They definitely renewed its glow!”

Smooth operator The wrinkles on the upper half of Ronel’s face were treated using botulinum toxin and strategicallyplaced Silhouette Soft threads that gave her a gentle brow lift and opened up her eyes. Charcoal Masks: Good or Bad?

So you’ve all seen those funny videos online of people pulling off a painful charcoal peeloff mask… And you may also have read about the amazing benefits of charcoal masks… but then you’ve also heard they might not be so good for you. So which is it; are they good or bad for your skin? I did a little internet research, and here’s what I found out… According to an article on www. cosmpolitan.com, many of those charcoal peel-off masks are made from charcoal and glue… doesn’t sound very good. And these masks are being sold online by unregulated beauty companies. Andy Millward, a qualified aesthetician and member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology says this; “They look very damaging to the skin. You’re literally ripping the surface layer of skin off (and probably the vellus hair with it)... As for all those “blackheads” it pulls out, the majority of the oils pulled from the skin will be sebaceous www.mumsmail.com

filaments which are actually needed by the skin so will be replaced within 30 days anyway to ensure healthy skin balance. Blocked pores (blackheads) are entirely different to sebum lined pores.” He says continued use can cause secondary skin concerns. Some women even experienced chemical burns. However, there is a difference between a peel-off mask and a wash-off, claybased mask. It’s the peel-off ones that are so damaging to your skin. The general consensus seems to be that activated charcoal does have wonderful purifying benefits for your skin, and as long as you use an organic, clay-based, wash-off mask – you should be safe! However, I am no expert and it’s probably best to ask your aesthetician before trying anything new!

Mom’s Time: Pamper Your Soul

The world seems to be getting busier and busier. Not only have our lives become busier, but our children’s lives have become busier, which means that our lives have become even busier. It’s exhausting just reading it! So many moms feel the effects of not having time for themselves, and although they know it - they find it hard to do anything about it. Making behavioural changes and forming new habits is always hard. If we really want to see genuine change, we need to change our thoughts and beliefs. KindnessCan challenges moms to start thinking about themselves as one of the important tools in raising happy, balanced children. If you are not your best, your children are losing out on a great resource. That means; taking time for you to become your best is imperative to being the best resource you can be in your children’s lives. Taking time for you is time well spent in the parenting journey. Funny how it’s always easier to commit to something when we see the benefit in it for others! But it’s a start. One of these days, we’ll get you believing in the benefit of it just for you... just because you’re also worth it.

reeling at times, feeling overwhelmed and at worst, parenting from a place of fear. I find I really have to take hold of my mind and pull it into the space of “you can only eat an elephant one mouthful at a time.” I love that saying, one my mom imparted while I was pregnant with the twins and had a darling not-even-two-year-old at home. Breathe. Everything is going to be ok. But remember - you can’t pour from an empty cup. KindenessCan hosts a weekly moms’ workshop where we use the two hours to stop, take stock and hopefully see the journey with a slightly different set of eyes. Nurture Your Child’s Natural Talent and Potential

We often hear the old adage, “knowledge is power!” However, as we transcend into higher consciousness within ourselves, to grow and become the best version of ourselves, we realise that it is the “understanding” of the knowledge that is of paramount importance. As parents, we take pride in providing our children with the best education possible. While education, the school itself and the teachers have a profound impact on our impressionable kids, we have to know our kids - we have to understand them and help them to understand themselves, if we want them to truly flourish! The environment we provide our kids with, the programming, belief systems, social conditioning, experiences and emotions etc., is what ultimately shapes our children. Mainstream thinking would have us believe that everyone needs to fit into a specific sized box, and if we can’t then there’s something wrong with us. Each child is unique. How to Select the Perfect School

Really good schools exceed the government curriculum minimum requirements with more progressive methods of teaching, ensuring a higher success rate after matriculation. In smaller classrooms the teacher has the chance to cater for the learning differences of individual pupils. The value of personal attention is immeasurable, especially in the preschool and primary school years. The ideal school will offer small classes with the low student to teacher ratio, giving each student enough individual attention needed to excel.

issues, bullying and maintaining a high standard of self-respect and a caring attitude toward others. Effective supervision in the classroom and playground as well as the encouragement of active communication in resolving disagreements means that your child will learn and develop in a safe and nurturing environment. A balanced academic, sport and extra-mural programme will meet your child’s interests and needs. Children who eat a balanced, healthy diet and who participate in athletic activities focus better in the classroom. Pupils should be given the opportunity to participate in extramural activities that could include the unique experience of outreach into the local community, thereby growing your child into a valuable and contributing member of society.

Choose a school whose culture and philosophy matches the beliefs at home; teaching and reinforcing your values and morals on a daily basis. Once you have chosen a school make sure you are aware of the school’s vision and mission so that you can best support your child’s entire schooling career. A good school will also have a code of conduct that is enforced effectively, thus minimising discipline

What is an Educational Assessment?

As an educational psychologist, I often have concerned parents bring their children in at the request of a teacher, doctor or therapist for an ‘Educational Assessment’. There is often uncertainty about what such an assessment actually is. What does it tells us? How does it benefit my child?

developmental picture in detail helps us to put together a treatment and intervention plan. Such a plan might involve referral to other therapists or specialists and also includes recommendations which can be implemented in the classroom or at home.

Broadly, an Educational Assessment can answer the question: Why exactly is my child struggling to perform in line with their potential at school? What can we do to help? An educational assessment uses standardised, evidence-based tests and tools to assess and screen a broad range of developmental, cognitive and learning areas to highlight the child’s strengths and to reveal any areas of weakness which might be acting as barriers to their learning in the classroom. Such barriers might be quite small and focussed, or a child might present with barriers in a few different cognitive areas. Each and every child is different. Understanding a child’s whole

In all aspects of child development, early intervention is key and for this reason, early and thorough educational assessment can be beneficial in guiding intervention during those critical stages of child development. However, no matter the age of the child/ teen - it is never too late to help!

By understanding, and intervening (as early as possible), we create the most conducive environment for the child to fully express their potential and hopefully create a love for learning.

Peanut Butter-Banana Pudding Cups

Ingredients: • ½ cup granulated sugar • 3 cups whole milk • 3 large egg yolks, beaten • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 1/8th teaspoon kosher salt • 1 cup smooth natural peanut butter • 2 large ripe bananas • 32 round vanilla wafer cookies • ½ cup heavy cream • 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar • 2 tablespoons honey-roasted peanuts, roughly chopped • 8 x 5-ounce paper cups

Method: Whisk together the granulated sugar, 1/3 cup of the milk, egg yolks, cornstarch and salt in a large bowl. Heat the remaining 2 and 2/3 cups milk in a large saucepan over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Whisk half into the egg mixture until smooth, then gradually whisk the egg mixture into the milk in the saucepan. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly, and cook, continuing to whisk, until the mixture thickens, 6 to 8 minutes.

Remove the saucepan from the heat, and whisk in the peanut butter until melted. Transfer to a medium bowl, and let the pudding cool to room temperature, stirring frequently to prevent a skin from forming, about 45 minutes. Cut the bananas into small chunks. Put an even tablespoon of pudding in the bottom of a 5-ounce paper cup; top with 2 cookies and then 1 tablespoon of bananas. Repeat with another layer of pudding, cookies and bananas. Top with a final layer of pudding. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make 8 pudding cups. Cover the cups with plastic wrap, and refrigerate long enough for the cookies to soften, at least 6 hours preferably overnight. When ready to serve, whip the heavy cream and confectioners’ sugar until peaks form. Top each cup with a dollop of whipped cream, and sprinkle with the chopped peanuts. Source: www.foodnetwork.com

• King Of Scars by Leigh Bardugo. The author of the much-loved Grisha Trilogy brings us the first instalment in an epic new duology brimming with dark magic, civil war and shifting alliances. Nikolai Lantsov is nothing if not a survivor. The horrors that he endured as part of his country’s devastating civil war are a secret that he keeps alone. But now he is once again under threat as his enemies amass with renewed vigour. And there is unknown menace with which to contend too, as within him a dark magic grows more powerful, fuelled by wounds and the terrible legacy he harbours. With the help of two new allies, Nikolai will have to undertake a perilous journey in search of the wealth and magic that will save not just his imperilled country, but himself as well. • Kingdom Of Ash by Sarah Maas. This breath-taking and unforgettable conclusion to the epic Throne of Glass series brings us the devastating climax of Aelin’s momentous journey from slave to assassin to queen. Packed with broody darkness, romantic tension, intense suspense and relentless twists, Kingdom of Ash is the crowning moment in this thrilling series. She has risked everything to save her people - but at a tremendous cost. Locked in an iron coffin by the Queen of the Fae, Aelin must draw upon her fiery will to endure the months of torture inflicted upon her. The knowledge that yielding to Maeve will doom those she loves keeps her from breaking, but her resolve is unravelling with each passing day. for adults • Success Habits by Napoleon Hill. Napoleon Hill, author of the legendary Think and Grow Rich, is an immortal name in the self-help genre. Now he brings us Success Habits. Originally a series of radio talks, this book employs an accessible style and numerous anecdotes in order to lay out the fundamentals of prosperity and to illustrate the importance of purpose, intention, self-discipline and aspiration. Success Habits offers a new way of looking at life and hands us the keys to make of ours what we will. • I Tweet What I Like by Jackie Phamotse. Jackie Phamotse hit the news last year as part of a gruelling legal battle that was sparked by a suggestive tweet. Now, with this book, she delves into the climate of law and policy within the landscape of social media, delivering a thought-provoking and bracing personal narrative as well as an effective social media guide for a litigious, contentious and impulsive age. Shedding light on the court case that impelled her to write the book and taking a stand against those who try to own voices that are not theirs, I Tweet What I Like is an interesting intersection of personal experience, social commentary and cautionary tale. SUNCOAST

I am a single dad with three young girls. Balancing work and family life is often quite challenging. However, with Mum’s Mail I am able to book doctor and dentist appointments and at the same time plan interesting trips for my girls. One of our trips was to the Shongweni Farmers’ Market, found in your magazine. We now have an early Saturday morning tradition of buying hot chocolate and chocolate-raspberry croissants at the market. Thank you for the excellent magazine. Peter James. Mum’s Mail... well, I am not a mum but I am absolutely hooked on this little book! I was introduced to the book by a friend and as I am an ECD educator, I found many adventures to take our little ones on. Thank you Mum’s Mail! You rock! Adila Abdul. I am a read-a-holic; I love reading and I can honestly say even before having my son, I was obsessed with your magazine. It’s so informative and enjoyable - even if you’re not a mum. It equipped me for things way before becoming a mother and this helped me tremendously. Well done guys! I love Mum’s Mail. PS. I love the calendar you guys designed - It’s on my fridge and my family checks it at least once every day! Super well done guys. Deshnie Andrew.
