| Cover Stars

Meet the Cover Stars It’s all about dads this month – meet Dominic Stein with his gorgeous kids, Paige and Levi. Dominic is general manager of a small engineering company in Glen Anil, while his wife, Steph, is a photographer at Steph Stein Photography. Paige is five years old and is very loving; with a huge heart. She’s gentle and kind and has a witty sense of humour that she gets from her dad. She loves the beach, her friends and camping, and she doesn’t like eating squishy carrots or the thought of crabs touching her toes on the beach! She loves ballet, school and swimming.

Levi (22 months) is a strong willed, gentle-natured boy with a big dose of mischievous attitude. He also loves camping, riding his push bike and is mad about bananas. He doesn’t like mashed potatoes or when dad steals his dummy from him! He loves going to playschool and playing with his friends. As a family they take short holidays as many times in the year as possible. On being a father, Dominic had this to say: “It’s too much

DIY Father’s Day Card

Try this fun homemade Father’s Day gift idea that we have sourced from one of our favourite activity blogs! Footprint Lion

This one is perfect for the dads who love a good braai and enjoying being the braai master! To start, you can print a handy template at www. funhandprintartblog.com or if you are a whiz on the computer, you can make your own, or just hand write the message on your paper or card. • Whether handwritten or printed out, your card should read “My Dad is King of the Grill (or Braai) – and I’m not Lion” at the top. • Make a yellow footprint in the centre of the card with the toes pointed down. • Paint just the fingers (not including the thumb) with orange or brown paint. • Press them down around the heel of the foot to create the lion’s mane. Repaint the fingers as needed. • Paint a yellow tail. • Make an orange/brown thumbprint at the end of the tail. • Draw on the lion’s face when dry and add googly eyes. | Factory Shop Feature

If you’ve grown up in Durban, you will surely have been factory shopping! Stamford Hill Road, now known as Mathews Meyiwa Road, is quite possibly the hub of factory shopping in Durban, and I have many fond memories of shopping as a youngster (many moons ago) at all the surf factory shops, as well as in the Mayville area too, at places like the The Dungeon Factory Shop and others.

Basically, if you live in Durban, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to factory shopping. Here are some of our favourite factory shopping destinations in and around Durban.

Today there are also many factory shops along Point Road, and that’s just in Durban itself – there are plenty of factory shops to be found inland as well, in places like Pinetown, and north and south of Durban too! Another hub of factory shopping can be found in Durban North.

Another VERY exciting find is that Château Gâteaux KOS is a food factory outlet that has a Factory Shop. I repeat; sells top quality food products Château Gâteaux has a Factory at massive discounts. They buy Shop! and sell excess, residual, shortdated, past-dated, discontinued It’s located at their state-oflines, overruns, cancelled the-art, world-class factory orders and damaged products, located at 1 Imvubupark Close,

I recently discovered the KOS factory shop in Durban North. I WISH I had known about this place sooner! It’s not big or fancy, but wow do they have some great deals!

which is why it’s so discounted. I went in there to have a look recently, and was super excited by all the wonderful products at low prices. They have branches in Durban North, Hillcrest and Pinetown. Go and check it out, you won’t be disappointed! Visit www. koskos.co.za.

Factory Shop Feature | just off Nandi Drive, where they produce all their decadent gâteaux! Here you can find reject stock at discounted prices, as well as the standard range we all know and love at the normal Pâtisserie prices. It’s important to note everything is available on a strictly first-come-first served basis for all products and there is a strict returns policy. So what classifies a product as a reject? Either the cake does not meet the stringent specifications of the Quality Assurance Department, but is still safe to consume, or the cake meets the specifications of the Quality Assurance Department, but has decoration defects (height/shape/topping). The Factory Shop operates weekdays only from 10am to 4pm. So head over there if you have a sweet tooth! Email shop@chateaugateaux.co.za to be added to their mailing list for weekly updates of any items released. Another favourite of ours is Excess Factory Shop in Morningside. Excess has something for every occasion, and I could

seriously get lost in there… there are so many cool and useful products - it’s the perfect place to buy affordable gifts and products for your home. I did most of my Christmas shopping there last year, and found some really good bargains; from beach towels to handbags to bath products! What’s even more exciting is that from the 25th to the end of EVERY month, they have their Hot Dot Sale – where they have drastic markdowns on prices, some items are as low as R5! You can find amazing bargains, so pop in for a look! Visit www.excessfactoryshop.co.za. One not to miss is the Saradox Factory Shop, south of Durban. Saradox (Pty) Ltd develops and manufactures home and personal care products for brand owners in South Africa. The factory shop sells overruns, discontinued products and products with slight defects at discounted prices. Their ranges include body and skincare products, homecare, haircare, plus a gift range and a men’s shaving and grooming range

Make a Bee Hotel

Making a bee hotel is a wonderful way to keep children busy in the garden, and this is a fun way to help them do it. What you will need: • 7 pieces of marine plywood (to make a box 15cm in depth, 20x30cm width and height), drilled together, or pinned together with panel pins • Small logs • Offcuts of wood • Bamboo canes (try get bamboo cane fencing from garden centre, and pull it apart) • Some clay and paint to make a bee (optional) • Duct tape for the roof • Hinges and screws • Sign for bee hotel/rates How to build a bee hotel for your friendly garden pollinators

Building the box Using the panel pins, secure the panels together to form a box shape. Remember to leave two panels for the roof. Making the roof Angle the pieces of wood for the roof, in an A-frame shape and use the duct tape to keep the two pieces together. Secure the A-frame shaped roof to the box with some more duct tape for a temporary fix, or screw in some hinges. Creating hotel “rooms” for the bees Cut pieces of wood and bamboo to the same depth as the box. Drill holes of different depths and thicknesses into the logs and wood pieces (anything

www.mumsmail.com

18

between 2mm and 10mm drill bit will work). Ensure the holes are smooth and clean - remove any sharp pieces left behind and sand it down lightly. Fill the box with the wood and bamboo pieces that have been drilled and cut to size - make sure they’re evenly distributed, well compacted and secure. Location, location, location! Place the hotel in a sunny spot in the garden, on a southern-facing wall, 1m above the ground. Solitary bees love having a variety of flowers to choose from, so plant lots near the area. A multidisciplinary approach is imperative to best manage spasticity. After the injections, all patients undergo intense physiotherapy and occupational therapy to stretch the relaxed muscles and to exercise and strengthen the other muscle groups. Some patients may need casts or splints fitted to improve joint mobility. “Unfortunately there is no cure for CP, but by managing their symptoms, we are able to improve the quality of life for these children and make it easier for caregivers to care for them,” concludes Dr Keshave. Dr Des@Home: Men’s What about Dad? As keepers of the house, female patients often confess in our rooms that they put themselves last and their children first. This is one of the characteristics of a good mother according to most mothers. Us general practitioners usually then sort out the children, but also encourage the tired moms to look after themselves too! We encourage them to book an appointment to do the basic bloods, a breast examination and gynaecological check-up and remind them that if the mother goes down - the whole ship goes down! But what about the dads? They are usually too busy to even set foot in a doctor’s room… It is crucial for mothers to motivate their husbands to

Mooimaak Makeovers: Annie Delport lives in Simon’s Town where she works as a tour guide. While she loves her job, years of unprotected sun exposure had left her with visible damage. Fortunately, Annie was in for the makeover of a lifetime when she took part in kykNET’s popular makeover show, Mooimaak. The Skin Renewal team, led by Dr Andre Truter and therapist Bernice Crause gave her a series of skin rejuvenating treatments and the results were nothing short of incredible. The Vampire Facial A Vampire facial involves

drawing the patient’s own blood and running it through a process to isolate its plateletrich plasma (PRP). As the PRP contains growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration they then inject it back into the skin. This is how they managed to refine Annie’s skin texture, soften lines and create a firmer, more youthful-looking skin. The eyes have it! They rejuvenated Annie’s eye area using a device called the Jett Plasma Lift Medical. It emits a safe, high voltage charge that tightens up skin tissue and stimulates the

growth of new collagen.

A touch of light Annie’s deepest wrinkles were tackled using a CO2 fractional laser. It removes the outer layers of dead, damaged skin and stimulates the creation of yet more collagen. It requires 7 to 10 days of downtime, but Annie will be the first to tell you that the results are totally worth it. “My texture is beautiful, smooth and glowing!” she says. “I want to do it again!” Visit Skin Renewal at www.skinrenewal.co.za or contact 0861 SKIN SA.

The Gift of Dyslexia Dyslexia and similar learning differences stem from innate patterns of thinking and learning that are associated with high levels of creativity and strong problem-solving and threedimensional thinking abilities.

People who develop dyslexia think in pictures, rather than words; they are imaginative and creative; and they try to solve problems by looking at the whole picture, rather than working step-by-step.

Davis Dyslexia Correction is a strength-based approach that harnesses the mental talents that dyslexic people share to overcome their learning problems. To do this, students must use different strategies than are commonly taught with remedial programmes. When dyslexic students recognise their mental talents, they develop a renewed sense

of self-esteem and confidence. When they start to employ study methods which capitalise on their talents, progress is very rapid. To find out more about dyslexia and the Davis approach, plus the book ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’ by Ronald D. Davis, check out www.dyslexia.com or e-mail Kathryn at logicallearningsolutions@ gmail.com.

Why Climbing a Tree is Better than Watching a Screen How much screen time is too much for young children? Cindy Glass, founder and owner of Step Up Education Centres offers the following important points for consideration: Children learn by doing, not by having things done for them. Building puzzles, creating imaginative games, playing in the sand or climbing a tree require active involvement from children. They need to think, solve problems and use their innate creativity to enjoy these activities. Furthermore, they develop important motor skills. In a nutshell, children learn how to use their bodies and minds effectively. Sitting for hours in front of a screen involves www.mumsmail.com

A Dinosaur Delight in the Garden This is a great way to encourage your kids to play outdoors in the garden! The idea behind this garden is to encourage children to build a dinosaur world as they imagine it.

What you will need: • An old tyre • Some acrylic paint (let your children choose their favourite colours) • A paintbrush • Some potting mix • A double layer of weed barrier cloth • A staple gun (optional) • Small plastic dinosaurs • Some small rocks and/or stones • Plants (like ferns, moss, coleus etc) Let’s get started: Step 1 Give the old tyre a good wash the day before you begin the activity. Consider this the phase where you prep your tools. The tyre needs to be completely dry before you can use it.

www.mumsmail.com

Step 2 At this point, we’re going to take measures against weeds popping up and invading the children’s creation. You can either use a staple gun to secure a double layer of weed barrier cloth to the tyre, or you can lie a double layer of weed barrier cloth down on the space you’re going to use for your dinosaur delight garden. If you decide on the second option, ensure you’ve cleared the ground and made it fairly level.

Step 3 The children can now get busy with the paints! Let them make some dinosaur footprints along the top of the tyre, arrows, leaves, or anything else that works with the theme. Remember to leave room for creative play, if it’s not exactly on theme, that’s fine too. Let the children lead with their own ideas. Step 4 Once the paint is dry, you can place the tyre on the weed barrier cloth (if you

38

chose not to staple it to the tyre).

Step 5 Fill the inside of the tyre with soil, leaving enough room for the plants you’re going to be adding. Dinosaurs, rocks, and other small items will also need to fit in. At this stage, it’s great to talk to children about soil and its importance in sustaining life. Step 6 Now is the most fun part of all. Plant the plants, leaving space for the dinosaurs. Remember to choose plants based on the location of the tyre. Some plants will not thrive in full sun, while others require it. Once your plants are in, it’s time for the dinosaurs to make their entry! Place them in position and add rocks, shells, and other items that tie into the theme. Source: www.lifeisagarden.co.za.

Readers’ Feedback Competition

SUNCOAST

It’s been many years since I picked up a copy of Mum’s Mail. With my kids in high school, I didn’t think it would have much to offer me anymore. But I was wrong! From the article on Splashy Fen to the Mooimaak Makeover, it kept me happily occupied while I waited for my son to finish sport. Thank you, Mum’s Mail. Robyn Joubert. It’s amazing how much information on daily living one can get from one magazine - the amazing directory to lifestyle I like to call Mum’s Mail. I’m not a mother, but a teacher to many children. I find Mum’s Mail to be for everyone and not just those that are parents. We get exhausted at work and come home looking for something easy to prepare - I find such easy and simple recipies inside Mum’s Mail to snack on. I love the children’s section of the book - I don’t just use the experiments at work but also at home. Through Mum’s Mail I was able to find a great cake and party event planner. Thanks to Mum’s Mail I also live and eat healthily with all the wonderful and helpful tips that are given. Thank you for such a wonderful magazine! Shobana Mohanlal.
