From the Editor’s Desk... So we’ve almost made it through the year... The festive season is just about here, and I’m really feeling the need for a holiday! 2019 has been a year of many ups and downs and big changes, especially here at Mum’s Mail. But we’ve come through it in one piece, and I’m very proud of our team and what we’ve achieved!

in December. I’m one of those eager Christmas decorators who would happily put up the tree in October, so I really have to restrain myself until December! I love getting into the Christmas spirit and having a 6-year-old in the house makes it even more exciting! We have some great articles in store for you in this issue – don’t miss our extensive holiday feature, with a host of activities to try and venues to visit in and around Durban these December holidays! You will also find amazing festive ideas, festive recipes, financial advice, book reviews, giveaways, health advice and our education feature – plus loads more! I hope you enjoy reading it!

Personally, my family is also in for some big changes next year as our son enters ‘big school’. It’s a bittersweet moment, as he leaves behind some of his innocence in pre-school but also looks forward to learning new things and maturing in Grade 1. Oh, and he looks SO cute in his new uniform! But for now, I’m looking forward to the holidays and spending some quality time with my family. This year we’ve decided to get a real Christmas tree for the first time (I won’t miss our mangy fake one that has seen better days)! And our son is eagerly awaiting the return of our Elf on the Shelf

From the Mum’s Mail team – have a magical Christmas with your family and we look forward to seeing you in 2020! Sarah xxx

Your Money: How Much Should your Spouse Know? Discussing money and finances with a spouse or significant other is like all else in a relationship - a successful outcome is dependent on the honesty and transparency of the discussion. Unfortunately, money is a sensitive topic, often avoided in relationships, but it is undeniably important to maintain financial awareness as a couple and as individuals. Financial Awareness Christine Marincowitz, a spokesperson for the Ecsponent group commented: “While our focus is on financial health and not marital health, it is important to understand that these two things go hand-inhand. For couples to achieve a healthy level of financial awareness, honesty is the first step in the right direction.”

bank accounts that the other person is unaware of. Financial fidelity is not just about what happens after marriage, but also truthful disclosure of each partner’s financial status before tying the knot. Many married couples bring debt into the marriage. While it is to be expected for couples to have some debt - study expenses, a car, clothing accounts etc. – the key to success is disclosure. If the couple understands their joint commitments and work on a financial plan, their success is more likely. Hiding the extent or detail of debt can derail the hopes and dreams of a new couple with very little notice.

usually for women, who leave the financial decisions in the hands of their husbands and are disillusioned at their death, during divorce or in retirement. Marincowitz advises “planning for and combining your fortunes is a wise move but both partners need to be completely transparent and have equal decision making powers. Prepare Your Pocket and Have a Rand-Wise Christmas In a few weeks’ time Christmas will be on your doorstep. Are you financially prepared for it?

There are various costs involved when it comes to silly season festivities - travel, accommodation, pocket money, gifts, and activities - and perhaps the biggest part of your expenditures - groceries.

Make sure in the weeks prior to Christmas that your pantry, fridge and freezer are well stocked (not overstocked) with Carla Oberholzer, debt adviser and spokesperson at DebtSafe, long-lasting ingredients to keep your budget under control and says it is time to be proactive to avoid all those last-minute in the weeks prior Christmas. “There is still time to make sure expensive purchases. you are financially ready to get For Christmas Day – Oberholzer through the festive season. recommends that everybody And, remember, the last thing should club in and pay a certain you should do is consider amount to cover the necessary creating even more debt,” lunch/dinner costs. If your friends or family members are also driving from the same area, consider carpooling. Using fewer cars means using less fuel AND saving money. Get the best fuel consumption by driving in the highest gear possible and maintaining a constant speed from your home to your destination. Because Christmastime is also summertime – be aware that your air-conditioner uses more fuel when you drive at an average lower speed. Keep your gifts personal, yet frugal this year. Let the kids bake personalised cookies for your loved ones, or use available items and get going with your own arts and crafts skills to make ornaments, bookmarks, coasters, or jewellery items. If you pre-plan your 2019 Christmas while there is still time, you will not only ease your pocket and nerves, but also pave the way many more randwise Christmases to come. Christmas Craft:

Make a Paper Plate Reindeer

A popular way to measure and treasure your child’s physical growth is by making handprints as keepsakes. • Ribbon or yarn • Low temperature glue gun

This activity spotlights everyone’s favourite reindeer, Rudolph, and preserves your child’s handprints in his “antlers”. While embarking upon this nifty winter project, your child will utilise manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination and hand/wrist flexibility. What you need: • Small paper plate • Large paper plate • Brown acrylic paint • Paint sponge or wide brush • Large red pom-pom, 1 ½ inches • Brown craft foam • Tan craft foam or felt • Pair of googly eyes • Scissors • Stapler • Pen • Hole punch www.mumsmail.com

What to do: Start by asking your child to paint both plates with a coat of brown paint. Set them aside to dry for a couple of hours. Meanwhile, make the reindeer’s antlers. Trace your child’s left and right hands twice on brown craft foam. Ask your child to carefully cut both pairs of handprints out. Next, ask your child to draw two ears on the tan craft foam or felt and cut them out. Those will be the inner section of the reindeer’s ears. Using the tan cut-outs as a guideline, your child can make a larger set by drawing around those shapes about half an inch wider all the way around. Have him cut those out and set them aside. When the paint is dry, ask your youngster to glue the googly eyes onto the large plate. Then, instruct him to glue the red pom-pom onto the smaller plate as shown. Now it’s time to add the antlers. Have your child glue one antler to another and then to the back of the large plate using hot glue. Each side should have two pairs of adorable handprint antlers. Add the ears to the rim of the large plate with a dot of hot glue. Glue the tan pieces onto the brown pieces with another dot of hot glue. Assist your child in punching two holes at the top of the plate and thread ribbon or yarn through the holes and tie a knot. Pick a place in the house where your new reindeer can be prominently hung and displayed for all to enjoy! Source: www.education.com. 18

Skin Cancer

Awareness Month

The holidays are around the corner, and CANSA reminds the public to take care and be SunSmart everywhere.

Sunburn can occur within fifteen minutes, and the damage caused is permanent, irreversible and adds up with each exposure to the sun. Saint Giles: Empowering Those with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December and aims to promote empowerment and help create real opportunities for people with disabilities. Empowerment involves investing in people – in jobs, health, nutrition, education, and social protection. When people are empowered they are better prepared to take advantage of opportunities, they become agents of change and can more readily embrace their civic responsibilities.

and assemble various products. Some of these workers were once shunned by their families and hidden away because of their disabilities. But, now that they have a job, they have pride and some are even sole breadwinners in their homes. They also have a Remedial Gymnasium, where use is free of charge subject to referral by a medical practitioner or physiotherapist and approval by the gym manager.

The gym offers remedial exercise therapy for disabled persons in the form of light and active Saint Giles Organisation for the Disabled in resistance exercise. It is 100% compatible for Durban is a non-profit dedicated to helping the patients confined to wheelchairs. In addition, disabled become empowered by providing the gym also has 2 tilt beds and specialised multiple avenues of service and support to them. Motomed machines for patients suffering from lower limb immobility, as well as specialised One such avenue, their work centre, currently recumbent cycles to aid post rehabilitation of has 79 disabled employees who pack, sort all disabled persons The gym is open each weekday morning and employs staff who are qualified to provide this specialised therapy, and is currently providing treatment to an average of 37 patients per day. Gloria (53) has been working at Saint Giles for 19 years. She says, “Getting a job at Saint Giles changed my life. Doing it for myself and not waiting for others. I paid for my sons to go to school. It has helped me so much… when my house burnt down… when my husband passed away. I am getting educated. The people are so good. I can trust them. I am so proud of Saint Giles. It is number one. There is no place better than this with what we do.” There are an estimated one billion people living with disabilities worldwide who face many barriers to inclusion in society. Saint Giles strives to help people with disabilities participate in public life, create stable democracies, active citizenship and reduce inequalities in society. Emergency Bag for the Holiday Season

When we relax over the holiday period, our natural guard is often down. Emergencies usually happen when we expect it the least, therefore the emergency bag should always be the first bag to be packed. The following situations can be treated easily and even save a life: Allergies • Make sure that your EpiPen hasn’t expired if you are highly allergic. • Wear your allergy bracelet. • Tend to any allergic reaction immediately: Pack anti-histamine tablets/ suspension as well as an anti-histamine ointment (e.g. Allergex ointment). • Ask your GP to script a few prednisone tablets/Aspelone suspension - especially when travelling where there are no medical facilities. This can save a life! Burns • Run cool tap water over the area for 20 minutes. • Give pain medication. Pack tablets and suspension (e.g. Ibuprofen/Paracetamol combination: Ibumol). • Apply something like Burn Shield to skin that is not broken (put this in the fridge as soon as you arrive at your destination) or Silbecor (an over-the-counter anti-bacterial for burn wounds) to broken skin, followed by a Jelonet dressing and bandage to prevent infection. • Sunburn: prevention is easy don’t let this one slip through. Make sure to pack Voltaren gel to apply to burnt areas. It works like a bomb!

drops (e.g. Systane) lubricant drops to soothe sensitive eyes. If you are going to a tropical destination, ask your GP for antibiotic eye drops (e.g. Tobrex) to take with, as patients often pick up “pink eye” (a bacterial infection of the conjunctiva, common in warm, humid locations). • Also pack ice packs for sprains.

Chronic medication • Do not forget to pack your regular medication. Keep it in the original packaging to make it easy to identify in case of an emergency. • Carry a script with you. • Make sure that you have enough repeats on your current script. Prevention is better than cure! Take care and make sure that your emergency bag is up to date and that nothing has expired. You might not need it yourself, but you could save the person next door’s life! By Dr Desere Ferreira, www.umhlangagp.net.

CPR • Someone in the house should be trained in CPR! • Have an emergency number on the fridge. • Make sure children that stay at home with helpers are swim safe and if you are visiting where there is an open pool - invest in a water alarm armband for your toddler. They slip out of your sight when you least expect it.

Injuries • Pack an antiseptic ointment to apply to open wounds after rinsing thoroughly, as well as a range of plasters and bandages. Always put pressure on bleeding wounds to stop the bleeding and do not remove any foreign bodies that are lodged deep into the skin - get to an emergency centre ASAP. • Pack neutral eye www.mumsmail.com

Tablets: The Tip of the Iceberg for Successful Digital Education Earlier this year, education experts cautioned against a rush to provide tablets and other digital infrastructure before a solid strategy and fundamentals have been put in place. “In the rush to get on board with the 4th Industrial Revolution - a term many are invoking without truly understanding the issues involved - private schools have increasingly been offering coding, robotics and digital learning on their campuses,” says John Luis, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools, which has been at the forefront of introducing tech in South African classrooms for several years. “However simply offering content that previously used to be in book or paper format, and not investing time and money in a holistic approach to content and delivery, as well as proper educator and support staff training will render such initiatives futile,” explains John.

While the sentiment is welcomed, there is much work to be done before the time arrives to unbox devices. “It is extremely important to understand that learning is served and not defined by technological tools,” says Dr Neelam Parmar, renowned global tech-ed expert. “All too often we think that the technology will fix our teaching and learning problems in school but what is truly important is that the technology is embedded firmly and seamlessly within the curriculum and lesson delivery in the classroom,” she says.

Luis says while there is much talk about coding and ICT in schools, the key success factor when introducing technology in classrooms is the development of an appropriate and defined curriculum. And very importantly, tech in the classroom can never replace the fundamental core skills required for academic excellence.

For more info visit www.advtech.co.za.

“There is great potential in creating online learning systems to close the widening educational gap,” she says, “but to get to this point in education, it is vital that the government first understand the relevance of emerging technologies and how to offer the necessary digital literacy skills for the next generation.”

Future Leaders In Training

In his State of the Nation address earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that government would, over the next six years, provide every school child in South Africa with digital workbooks and textbooks on a tablet device.

Confidence is the Best Gift you Could Ever Give Yourself! Self-doubt holds us back from achieving our true potential and reaching the level of success that we desire. How can you achieve selfconfidence if you have suffered from a low self-esteem most of your life?

Essentially, achieving selfconfidence is to trust and believe in yourself. This can only be achieved when you love and accept yourself unconditionally. Many people lose confidence in themselves because of past trauma, shame, self-rejection, depression, abuse and bullying, which programmes them into thinking they are worthless and not good enough. What to Consider when Choosing to Study after Grade 12

For all high-school learners, the National Senior Certificate (NSC) represents the gateway to further study.

But what exactly are the options available to the average South African student and, more importantly, does one size fit all? What Should I Study? I have two daughters in high school who every so often raise the subject of further study with me. As different as they are, the advice I offered them both was the same and it was the very same that my dad, a music teacher, offered me when I was in high school: find something that you really enjoy doing and you’ll never have to work a day in your life! Look to your own family. Chances are that the happiest among them are the ones who love what they do. While it is a given that your choice must also be able to support you financially when you eventually enter the world of work, choosing a field of study that you feel passionate about is the first step in the process. Passion fuels purpose but, more importantly, purpose fuels a meaningful life.

may seem like a large number of available public institutions, capacity at each institution is limited. This means that not everyone who applies and meets the entrance criteria is automatically accepted.

Many students thus choose to obtain a qualification at a private institution. South African private higher education institutions or PHEIs, unlike their PHEI counterparts such as Harvard or Stanford in the US, are not allowed to call themselves universities, but may offer the same levels of qualifications as a public university. At present, some 300 private providers of higher education currently help bolster the country’s tertiary capacity. Choosing a Mode of Study Nearly half of all higher education students study through distance learning. Distance learning students generally have the option to

take a little longer to complete their qualifications and save money not having to travel to or live near a campus. Distance learning students also have the time to hold full-time jobs. While distance learning is a viable option in both the public and private education spaces, it requires discipline and dedication together with a fair amount of maturity and focus. If you’re considering a private institution, keep the following in mind: • Choose a Registered Institution • Choose an Accredited Programme • Choose a Well-Respected Institution • Choose a Specialist

Teaching our Children to Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Have you noticed that we may be bringing up a generation of young people who feel so entitled to gifts, devices and whatever they desire, that gratitude is becoming a lost art? How often do you feel uncomfortable in choosing gifts for yours or other’s children because you know that the more affordable, ‘little’ things may result in a forced ‘thank-you’, or worse, a temper tantrum? The truth of the matter is that gratitude is a LEARNED behaviour that is our responsibility, as parents, to teach our children.

Making inroads to improved literacy: Rally to READ It was President Cyril Ramaphosa himself who declared that, “Early-grade reading is possibly the single most important factor in overcoming poverty, unemployment and inequality.” According to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study report, 78% of grade 4 pupils cannot read for meaning in any language. This survey, recorded in 2016, also indicated that reading scores had not improved since 2011. The ability to read in Grade 4 is regarded as crucial: from Grades 1 to 3 you learn to read‚ and from grades 4 to 12 you read to learn. Children supported by the Rally to Read initiative Unisa expert Nkidi Phatudi said in many township and rural schools‚ teachers trying to introduce English were at a disadvantage because of their own lack of proficiency in the language. In that way‚ literacy cracks grow into canyons. “The value of literacy extends beyond the classroom‚ and should ideally equip children with the knowledge‚ skills and confidence to participate actively in society‚” researcher Ursula Hoadley said. “Good reading skills enable children to learn much more than their teachers might offer, and it enables them to learn independently”.

together with The READ Educational Trust, this organisation has worked tirelessly alongside corporate and private sponsors to deliver books, teaching aids, educational toys and other muchneeded resources to these schools. Remarkable headway has been made. To date, over R91million has been raised for rural education. Over 1 000 schools have been reached through the programme, and the fruits of Rally to Read’s efforts are evident during repeated annual visits to each Rally to Read-selected school. A threeyear period is assigned to each school, and in addition to resources donated, teachers are mentored to promote literacy effectively. Make an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of grateful learners and educators – invest in Rally to Read 2019! To find out more, visit www.rallytoread. co.za or call 087 237 7781.

Managing Power Struggles without the Pain One of the most nerve-wracking parental experiences is finding yourself in a shopping mall staring down at your twoyear-old about to erupt into a full blown power struggle. Keys Steps to Managing Power Struggles Sidestep the struggle: Get your desired outcome without giving in to your child; e.g. you tell your three-year-old it’s time for bed. She declares she’s not tired. You calmly ask if she would like you to carry her to bed. She agrees. The fun element of being carried to bed kicks in, deflecting her resistance to going to bed.

So why do power struggles occur? It’s actually a natural outcome of what your child is genetically programmed to do - to develop a sense of autonomy. It’s how they internalise what their limits are. The power struggle becomes destructive when parents react in a way that overpowers instead of empowers their child. Children need to learn to make their own choices and decisions, within reason. It’s when a parent responds in a way that renders their child powerless that the child reacts by either giving in completely to obtain approval or becomes rebellious and/or destructive.

www.mumsmail.com

Provide Choices: Do make choices realistic. Do not provide a choice you have no intention of following through on. Do empower your child through the choices you give, e.g. giving your 11-year-old the responsibility of feeding the family pet. Make reasonable requests: Do ensure that your expectations of your child are age-appropriate. Having a routine for homework, playtime, chores, bath and bedtime is essential and helps reduce the stress of constantly reminding your child what comes next.

middle of a game. Do provide a five to 10 minute heads up so they can start disengaging from whatever activity they’re involved in. Do not change the goal post and add another five or 10 minutes. Acknowledge your Child’s Feelings: Do acknowledge that your child is feeling unhappy when he is disgruntled about doing something he doesn’t want to. It doesn’t change the fact that he has to tidy up his room but it helps him feel understood. Set clear consequences: Do state the consequences of non-compliance with your request, calmly. Do Not explode into an outburst or it will give your child the edge. Inject Humour: Do find a way to lighten the mood with some humour. Tickling your six-year-old playfully can create closeness and remove resistance. Move on: Once your child has complied, move on and restore the caring, trusting relationship between you and your child.

Provide a Heads Up: Do Not pounce on your child at Written by the last minute to “switch off the Carmel Murugen, Xbox now!” when they’re in the Social Worker. 38

Papier-Mâché Volcano My son was tasked with making a volcano for school. I was hoping we would get away with a simple drawing or basic model with red and orange crepe paper as lava. No such luck! Once he saw that other kids had made WORKING volcanoes, we of course had to make a working one (thanks, other moms!).

– using the masking tape as a frame. This is the fun and messy part! Let it dry overnight. Now get painting! We used all shades of brown, grey and black for the rock, then added lava in red, orange and yellow. Let it dry.

Not knowing where to begin, I decided to wing it – LOL. I used a very complicated method that involved a plastic cup and paper plates to create a not-so-stable base for our papier-mâché. I’ve since discovered that crumpled newspaper works well to form the basic shape of the volcano around your cup or bottle. I found some great tips at Red Ted Art, which I have combined with my own ideas below.

We didn’t do this step, but I would highly recommend it - add a coat of waterproof varnish. This won’t make the volcano totally waterproof, but will certainly help in preserving it. For the Volcanic Eruption: To make the lava, all you need is bicarb and vinegar. I added red food colouring to the vinegar to make it look like lava, and put some bicarb in a separate container. So my son had to just add the bicarb to the cup at the centre of his volcano and pour in the red vinegar, and it all bubbled out like real lava!

Materials: • An empty plastic bottle/cup • Newspaper By Sarah Mackintosh. • Masking tape • A box or similar “to contain” the volcano (we used a flat cake board) • Plain flour and water • Paints • Waterproof varnish (optional) Papier-Mâché Paste Mix one part flour to two parts water in a container (half a cup of flour and a cup of water). Some recipes suggest you heat the mixture in the microwave, but we used it cold and it worked just fine. Make your Volcano: Cut down the cardboard box to create a base for your volcano to go in and to capture the fluids from the erupting volcano. Place your empty plastic bottle/cup in the centre of your cardboard box and glue it in place. Scrunch up some newspaper and place it all around the bottle. Using your masking tape, make a “frame” - running from the top of the bottle down to the cardboard platform and trapping the scrunched up newspaper underneath. Tear newspaper into strips and start applying your papier-mâché layers all around the volcano www.mumsmail.com

Tween Birthday Party Ideas

Check out these cool birthday party ideas that your preteen will fall in love with!

Pool Party

Where: At home or a hotel You will need: Pool floats, swimming clothes (ask kids to bring their own) and lightweight balls. Fun games in the pool followed by delicious cake and snacks - equals happy, smiling children at the end of the day! Pool parties are just fun, more so for kids who love water. If you have a pool at home, organising a tween pool party gets a lot simpler. Clean pool, decorations, pool floats, snacks, and cake are all you need to host a party at home. If you don’t have a pool at home, you can find out about using a hotel to host a poolside party for the kids. Regardless of where the party is, ensure that the pool is clean and free of chemicals and other allergens. Most importantly, make sure that the

kids are safe in the water, and your party will be a big hit with your child and their friends!

Movie Themed Party

Where: At home You will need: Ticket stubs, movie-theatre styled popcorn tubs and 3D glasses A movie themed party is fun, has popcorn, and sodas. If they have a favourite movie, the birthday party can revolve around it. Or, you can have a generic movie theme with fake movie ticket stubs, popcorn, sodas, and perhaps even fake 3D glasses for the fun of it. You can plan this party a little early on and get custom invitations that look like movie tickets, which the guests should bring with them to enter the party zone! Source: www.momjunction.com.
