FALL 2016

Million Dollar Bequest Funds Campus Nursing Scholarships Penn State alumna, Grace Elizabeth Keen, ’46 HHD, was born on Valentine’s Day in 1922. She passed away on February 1 of this year, just shy of her 94th birthday, and left behind a legacy that was so reflective of the person she was.

“Grace was the perfect name for her because she lived her life with grace, kindness and genuine concern for others,” stated Director of Development Maria Russoniello. In true form, Grace took measures to ensure that students from Wayne County who are interested in pursuing a degree in nursing at Penn State Worthington Scranton will benefit from an over $1 million dollar gift that she bequeathed to the campus to create a nursing scholarship endowment in the Keen name. Campus Advisory Board member, Mary McNichols,’81, ’02 Bus, who knew Grace for over 30 years in both a professional and personal capacity, commented, “Grace’s mother was a nurse and her sister was an educator. She had immeasurable respect for both of them and wanted to honor them by designating this gift for nursing education. As a proud Penn State alumna, the relationship that Grace developed with the Worthington Scranton campus over the past several years confirmed her intentions.” As one of dozens of students who have benefitted from the annual Keen Scholarship when she was pursuing her first nursing degree, Kelsey Madden ’09 ’11 BS, ’15 MS NUR shared her thoughts. "It was an honor to receive the Grace Keen scholarship two years in a row. College is a great financial burden and Ms. Keen sought to ease that burden for many

nursing students, including myself. One memory I have of her was at the annual scholarship dinner to honor recipients and donors. She insisted on having a photo taken of the two of us. Two weeks later I received a letter in the mail from Ms. Keen thanking me for the profession I had chosen as well as wishing me luck. She also included a copy of the photo we had taken. At a time when she should be thanked for her generosity, she made it a point to encourage and thank me. I'm lucky to have known Grace Keen and to have been the recipient of such a generous gift. It came as no surprise to me that she would go above and beyond to ensure that future nurses would continue to benefit from her scholarship and kindness." “Grace was a true philanthropist,” stated Russoniello. “She lived a very modest lifestyle and always placed others before herself. This incredible gift is testimony to the kind of person she was. We will always remember her as a sweet, loving, and warm individual.”

Campus Graduates 208 in Ceremony at the Scranton Cultural Center

Chancellor’s Message

Penn State Worthington Scranton held its 48th Commencement on Saturday, May 7 at the Scranton Cultural Center. “We have outgrown our campus facilities for an event this large and we wanted our students and families to have an exceptional experience,” said Dr. Marwan Wafa. “The Cultural Center provided an excellent venue for our graduation ceremony.”

As an engaged university, I have sought out, and have been invited to serve on numerous boards, including the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce; United Way of Lackawanna County; Geisinger/CMC; United Neighborhood Centers; and various committees. I have met and talked with leaders in government; business and industry; and higher and secondary education.

Campus and University alumnus Al Cappelloni, Jr. ‘79 Bus, tax partner with RSM, Boston, delivered the commencement address. In his speech, Mr. Cappelloni encouraged the graduates to always work hard and give their best effort in order to achieve success. The 208 Penn State Worthington Scranton graduates join over 13,000 students receiving diplomas this spring from all of Penn State's 24 campuses, making the entire Penn State family more than 770,000 strong! Penn State Worthington Scranton granted baccalaureate degrees in Business; Corporate Communication; English; Human Development and Family Studies; Information Sciences and Technology; Letters, Arts and Sciences; Nursing; and Science. Associate degrees were awarded in: Business Administration; Human Development and Family Studies; Information Sciences and Technology; Letters, Arts and Sciences; and Nursing.

As I begin my second year at Penn State Worthington Scranton, I continue to be impressed with this area for many reasons. In addition to the physical beauty of Northeastern PA, I am captivated by the caliber and friendliness of the people who live and work here, including the faculty and staff at Worthington Scranton. Not only is there a strong work ethic, but also the sincere desire to serve others and make this community the best it can be.

Penn State Worthington Scranton has enormous value through the intellectual capacity that can benefit various sectors in our region. We have made much progress in this regard – as members of our faculty and staff have become more engaged in our community sharing their expertise, enthusiasm and the power of Penn State’s resources. In turn, they have discovered new opportunities for our students to learn, gain valuable experiences, and give back to the communities in which they live. We currently offer 12 complete bachelor degree programs that combine the vast resources of our wonderful University in order to positively impact regional workforce needs. We have employed various means of securing important input from area employers, professionals, advisory councils and individuals to determine the most beneficial learning options for local learners. Once all critical data elements are in place, we will be introducing new baccalaureate majors and minors as a complement to our already outstanding four-year and two-year degree programs. So stay tuned! Most importantly… WE ARE… PENN STATE… with top-notch faculty and staff, a beautiful campus and a genuine interest in inspiring our students. Penn State Worthington Scranton is committed to upholding its mission and tradition of high educational standards, vital academic programs, accessibility and community outreach. Thank you for being an important part of who we are and what we can achieve together. I look forward to hearing from you.

Always Be Prepared Explosion. Chaos. Injuries. Response. As the end of the spring semester drew to a close, campus nursing students participated in a drill that mimicked an external building explosion. They had opportunities to take on various roles in the command center, triage and evacuation along with being “victims” with a myriad of basic to severe injuries. “Part of the curriculum for nursing students is education on the role of nursing in disaster preparedness,” explained Nursing Instructor Linda McAndrew, who coordinated the drill. “When graduates are hired, part of their professional orientation is related to disaster management. This drill simulated what nurses might experience in their careers.” Participating by providing expertise, supplies and/or services were Cocciardi and Associates, the United States Army, the Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency, Emergency Medical Services of Northeast PA, Commonwealth Health Emergency Medical Services and WNEP 16.

Nurses Uphold Pinning Tradition The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition, which Penn State upholds each May. Often more personally meaningful than the graduation ceremony, it signifies the soon-to-be graduates’ official initiation into the brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses. The ceremony is rich with symbolism and can be traced all the way back to the Crusades of the 12th century. The modern ceremony dates back to the 1860s, when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of St. George in recognition for her tireless service to the injured during the Crimean War. To share the honor, she in turn presented a medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice of pinning new graduates was standard throughout the U.S. and it continues today as Penn State Worthington Scranton proudly recognizes its new nurses. Shown in the photo are members of the 2016 graduating class prior to the pinning ceremony.

Worthington Scranton, Geisinger Partner to Provide BSN Penn State Worthington Scranton has partnered with the Geisinger Health System to provide its registered nurses with flexible learning options that will allow them to earn a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) in as little as 18 months. The partnership was created in response to an Institute of Medicine report that recommended that 80 percent of registered nurses in the United States be "baccalaureate prepared" by 2020. "Helping our employees obtain BSN degrees is an important mission of Geisinger Health System," said Terri Bickert, vice president of nursing, system education, research and magnet for Geisinger Health System. "We have identified Penn State Worthington Scranton as a partner that will offer our nurses a quality education with flexibility and very strong student support services. This partnership will help us reach our goal toward magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center at each of our hospitals," said Bickert. Campus Announces New Four-Year Biology Degree Chancellor Marwan Wafa recently announced that the campus will offer a new Bachelor of Science degree program in biology, effective immediately. Drs. Meg Hatch and Dale Holen will serve as program co-coordinators. This new degree is being added to the 11 Penn State bachelor’s degree programs that you can fully attain at the campus. “We are committed to offering various programs that are aligned with regional market needs in order to positively support the needs of area employers for well-prepared graduates,” Dr. Wafa stated. “Our highly qualified faculty and support staff are dedicated to maintaining Penn State University’s high standards in a supportive and welcoming learning environment.” “The addition of the baccalaureate degree in biology at Penn State Worthington Scranton will provide expanded opportunities for local Penn State students to prepare for careers in

biological, health, and environmental sciences, provide students with another science-related degree option, and complement our other campus baccalaureate degree programs that have science- and biology-related curricular requirements, in addition to our current baccalaureate science degree,” said Dr. H. Durell Johnson, PSWS chief academic officer. “Students graduating with this degree will be highly competitive for post-baccalaureate study and will be qualified for employment in a variety of in-demand jobs both in Pennsylvania and in the greater U.S.” “The Biology Bachelor of Science degree complements the existing Science B.S., as it affords students a choice of focusing on the biological sciences or being more broadly trained in science,” said Dr. Hatch. “Both degrees are flexible enough to allow specialization in areas of specific interest such as prerequisites for medical or other professional schools.”
