The various accomplishments and achievements as highlighted in this report have shown again that the school has performed reasonably well in most, if not all areas in 2013 at both local and international levels. The school has shown marked improvements in various areas such as research and innovation, teaching, supervision, publications, and industry and community engagement in order to be in line with both the university’s and the school’s mission and vision.All these achievements would not have been possible without the continuous commitment and support from every member of the school. Thank you all for your commitment. The trust from the university’s top management is also a crucial element in the success of the school. I would therefore like to extend my sincerest thanks to USM’s management aptly led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Omar Osman. IIN N ON UCCTTIIO ODDU NTTRRO The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March 1995 after functioning for a period of 10 years as the Division of Computer Science, an independent and autonomous unit within the then School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Over the years, the school has been engaging in various developments, advances, and achievements of computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research and development, consultancy, community services and others. The school is now in a leading position as far as research and development activities are concerned and are gearing up its efforts to meet new challenges of research and development by restructuring our research activities/groups into 3 clusters to support our research activities. These 3 clusters (Enabling Technologies & Infrastructure, Data-to-Knowledge, and Service Computing) can be seen as our integrated approach in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The school has been maintaining strong and strategic linkages with the industry. Formal and informal events has been organised to exchange ideas that benefit the curriculum and the industry. The school has been involved in various joint projects with all types of industries supported by the national and international grants. The school has also been involved in consultancies, particularly in software system developments. In terms of global partners, the school has always maintained strong and strategic linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East. These smart partnerships include long-standing research collaborations with several French universities on natural language processing, distributed computing and artificial intelligence. The joint supervision of postgraduate students is made possible through such linkages. Over the next decade, the School of Computer Sciences will continue its efforts to strengthen its curriculum and research in order to produce quality graduates and to contribute to the sustainable development of the nation.

AACCAADDEEM UAATTEE MEESS:: U MM MIICC PPRRO GRRAADDU GRRAAM OG NDDEERRG UN Undergraduate Programmes The Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) degree is a 4-year degree programme that encompasses all aspects of computing as a discipline. The programme covers theoretical and scientific foundations as well as various extensive applications in industry and commerce. The curriculum of the programme emphasises problem-based learning concepts particularly through practical/project/training-based courses that are integrated throughout the years, and emphasises as well as inculcates a research orientation to the student. The Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) degree has been designed to allow students to tailor their studies to suit their particular interests, needs and circumstances. The specialisation areas are as follows: Information Systems Engineering Multimedia Computing Distributed Systems & Security Network Computing Software Engineering Intelligent Systems The school also offers minor programmes in Computer Science and Information Technology and service courses to students from other schools.

Mixed mode programme - Master of Science (Computer Science) This programme started as a coursework programme offered in the 1996/97 academic year. It had been suitably revised in the 2001/02 academic year and subsequently in the 2007/08 academic year it was offered as a mixed mode programme. Mixed mode programme - Master of Science (IT Technopreneurship) This programme was introduced in the 2007/08 academic year. It replaces the M. Sc. (IT) programme introduced in the 1996/97 academic year. Research programmes - Ph.D. & M.Sc. by Research A research degree is awarded primarily on the basis of a thesis embodying the results of a research project and any coursework topics (when necessary) or other formal studies required by the University and School of Computer Sciences to be undertaken during the candidature. The degree can be pursued under the supervision of at least one academic staff of the School. Under this mode of study, the candidate is required to complete a thesis within a stipulated time period. Usually, full-time candidates for M.Sc. complete their theses in 12 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 18 months and for Ph.D. in 30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 40 months.

The service computing cluster is divided into four sub-clusters namely Enterprise Computing, Social and Sustainable Computing, Software Engineering and Multimedia Systems. In 2013, the cluster consists of 15 faculty members who were actively involved in various research projects under the cluster. The cluster has successfully secured 14 of national and university grants with a total amount of RM 1,369,255. In terms of outputs, the members of this cluster contributed in all levels of publications. In total for 2013, this cluster had produce 76 publications, with 26 publications in citation indexed journal, 22 non-citation indexed publications, 2 publication in Chapter in Books and 26 in others publications. Besides grants and publications, our cluster members were supervising 51 postgraduate students included 7 Masters (Research) and 44 PhD levels in 2013. The cluster members were the main contributors in conducting the courses and supervising the dissertations for Master of Science (IT Technopreneurship) programme.

In 2013, Enabling Technologies & Infrastructures Cluster (ETIC) has contributed to about 17active grants of the school KPIs in term of total value amounts of grants which is RM 2,223,493 million. With strength of 20 researchers, ETIC has contributed to about 24publications in Citation Indexed Journal, 6 publications in NonCitation Indexed Journal, 2 publication in Chapter in Book and 18 in others publications. ETIC also managed to attract quite a number of research students. There are 54 active students with 41 Ph.D and 13 M.Sc. research students registered under the ETIC’s areas of research in 2013, which contributed to about 37% and 48% of the school Ph.D. and M.Sc.research students, respectively.

AACCTTIIVVIITTIIEESS Industry Training Send-Off Ceremony – 11 January 2013 For the first time the school organize this event. With this event, the students are more prepared to go for the training and have the opportunity to meet their USM supervisor before they went for the training.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1Citizen Certification Programme – January - April 2013 This programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education through Prestariang System Co., Ltd.. The aim of the programme is to increase the level of knowledge about the ethical use of digital technology. The certificate of accreditation is recognized internationally. A total of 167 students from 6 School attended this programme.

School of Computer Science, USM in cooperation with MIMOS Berhad and NVIDIA Corporation, had organized a two-day’s workshop on NVIDIA GPU Basic Programming. The programme filled by series of introductory talks on NVIDIA GPU computing as well as lab hands-on to give participants a firsthand experience in programming on NVIDIA GPU.

F-Secure National Inter-Vasity IT Security Competition – 8 April-28 May 2013 Two teams were chosen to represent the School of Computer Science, USM for the qualifying test. One team, CIA Triad made it to the finals and became the runner-up for the overall competition. Out of 28 Universities both private and public were involved in this competition. School of Computer Science becoming the runner up and received 3 Android tablets worth RM2000.

GISW 2013 is 3 series of GISW which is continuity from the success of GISW2011 and GISC-CyberSec that was successfully held last year. This workshop covered various aspects of information security comprehensively and handled by qualified and experienced trainers from USM. The main goal of this workshop is to train and create awareness among participants on information security, which has increasingly become an important issue in an organization and in life. GISW2013 will benefit those who are involved in education, network administration, law enforcement, insurance investigation, and defense against cybercrimes.

SSPPEECCIIAALL RREEPPO ORRTTSS Community Programme with Orang Asli Tangkai Cermin, Kampar Perak 22-24 November 2013 School of Computer Science, USM, had organized a community programme with Orang Asli Tangkai Cermin (OATC), Kampar, Perak with the main purpose to provide disclosures of the use of information technology and also raise awareness about the importance of education. Objectives of the programme are to reduce drop out in education among Orang Asli Tangkai Cermin children, to increase awareness of the importance of education among OATC’s parents, to expose IT to OATC’s children, bridging ties between orang asli communities and the academia through activities such as sports, talk and mutual cooperation and to strengthen the relationship between OATC’s woman and female staff of the School of Computer Science. Participation programme targeting various age groups from children to the parents involved were approximately 225 OATC, 40 USM’s students and 25 USM’s staffs with the theme "Melakar IT Bersama Komuniti". All OATC were brought to the computer lab at Pusat Latihan Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to expose to the world of information technology such as using the internet to find learning materials, social media and see the physical components of a computer. Additionally, other activities undertaken is telematches modern and traditional, coloring contests, demonstrations OATC’s daily activities such as weaving mats/basket, trapping animals and problem solving activities. The parents were also given educational motivation by experienced lecturers on the importance of education so that the OATC’s children do not drop out and can pursue their ambitions. To further enhance the educational motivation, three heads of families selected as examples of Figure Family that is Alang Uda, Anjang Johor and Alang a/p Uda Kana. They have kids who managed to go to college, get a job, and help improve the economic status of the family. The program was held successfully and got a good response from OATC residents with 70% of the target groups was fully participated in this program and 50% understood and appreciated the exposure to education and motivation provided. "This program achieves its goals and objectives while realizing USM vision to help the bottom billion. Cooperation with UiTM also very important and should be linked more closely because the village is very close to UiTM, "said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahari Belaton, USM lecturer cum advisor who is also a teak of OATC. Closing ceremony was graced by the Multimedia Development Corporation, Mohd Affandi Abdul Rahim Redzuan. Also present was the Project Leader, Dr. Zurinahni Zainol, Tok Batin Kampung Tangkai Cermin, Lan Pandak and also Tok Batin from surrounding villages.
