Escaping the Ordinary has never been easier. Presentations this year will take you around the world and beyond with cutting-edge theatrics from Scotland and Ireland, and music from the reaches of far-off Tuva and Zimbabwe. Our own backyard could not be better represented through classical music, dance and spoken word. From historic figures to pure comedy, this season will keep you in wonder, enlightenment and awe.

In this modern, multi-disciplinary interpretation based on Madame Butterfly by John Luther Long, international deaf storyteller Ramesh Meyyappan weaves visually poetic narrative and movement, and beautiful, handcrafted puppets to tell the tale of Butterfly, a female kite maker, whose life has been shattered. We follow this beautiful, complex character as she decides to conjure a happier life for herself in her head, but as she flits deeper into her imaginary world, her tale takes another tragic turn. Mature subject matter. Recommended for ages 12 and up. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Emmy winning musician Mark Izu accompanies his wife and “America’s foremost Asian storyteller” Brenda Wong Aoki to share touching and personal family histories with universal and contemporary appeal. The two acclaimed artists weave memories recorded in a recently discovered family diary with further flourish, story and song, tracking over 100 years of history in the American West. Joined by koto master Shoko Hikage, the performance offers a poignant glimpse of our shared history and demands it not be repeated.
