a Bavarian Alpine Experience he story of Helen’s reinvention is one of local entrepreneurship and civic cooperation that has changed a dying lumber town into Georgia’s third most visited city. Conveniently located just 15 miles off Highway 365/I-985 and located an hour and a half north of Atlanta via I-85 or GA Hwy. 400 makes it the perfect getaway.

T

50 years ago in 1969, three Helen businessmen were wondering if there wasn’t some way to encourage tourists to spruce up the main street and encourage visitors to stop. One suggested he would speak with a local artist John Kollock, whose family had deep

roots in the area. John drew up sketches that were inspired by his time in the service in Germany and visits to small Bavarian towns. With town approval, local carpenters began turning ideas into reality and many of the old buildings had new facades. Helen's first Oktoberfest was held in 1970 and as the town grew they included the tradition of the Helen to Atlantic Balloon Race. The addition of the Festhalle, new downtown stores and cobblestone alleyways helped transform the tiny town as buildings were painted with scenes of Bavaria and North Georgia, mirroring the migration of early settlers. Festivals and events continued throughout the year including Winefest, Volksmarch, Fourth of July fireworks, and Bavarianfest. From mid-September through October, Helen hosts the longest Oktoberfest in the South. During the Holiday season from Thanksgiving through December the town twinkles with beautiful lights and decorations. The Helen Arts and Heritage Center houses The History Museum which tells the story about how it was founded. Originally this pristine mountain valley was the home to the Cherokee Indians and how pioneers developed the Unicoi Turnpike that brought thousands of miners for the Great Georgia Gold Rush. Visitors can see the original sketches of John Kollack that has shaped this picturesque Alpine Village of what it is today. Holiday 2019 | www.mountainlakeguide.com

The area is also known for its pristine beauty, exemplified by attractions such as Anna Ruby Falls, a 150-foot waterfall that's in the Chattahoochee National Forest, and the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River. Unicoi State Park also provides miles of streams and trails for unlimited fishing, hiking and biking opportunities. Many Historical landmarks such as Nora Mill Grist Mill established in 1876, The Hardman Farm, Stovall Mill Covered Bridge, and picturesque Sautee– Nacoochee Mound are all located nearby. Helen has many camping facilities, hotels, B&B’s and cabins to make your stay enjoyable. Delicious authentic German food is served in restaurants, pubs, and bakeries. With a wide variety of International food, ales, local wineries, plus entertainment, Helen offers a unique experience. Recreation and family activities are endless with trout fishing, hiking, tubing, mini golf, Ziplines, Escape rooms, Gemstone Mining, Art Galleries, Railroad Exhibit, and the new Georgia Mountain Coaster. A variety of unique shops have handcrafted items, toys, candy, and international gifts from around the globe. The beautiful scenery of the mountains, rivers, and waterfalls surround this area and continually invite visitors to Helen for a “Bavarian Alpine Experience”. VACATION GUIDE in the Mountains | 7

VACATION GUIDE in the Mountains | 17

Road Trip To

Dahlonega From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC

Dahlonega Georgia is a charming town rich with history of the first major U.S. Gold rush in 1828. There is more to this town than it’s “golden history” with wineries, downtown shops and restaurants. Outdoor venues have beautiful mountain vistas, roaring waterfalls, and hiking trails. The following are just a few of the highlights when visiting Dahlonega. Dahlonega Gold Museum - The Historic 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse is the home to Dahlonega Gold Museum where visitors can see rare gold coins, artifacts, and history of the area. From huge gold nuggets, to maps of the mines, to a document signed by the 10th President of the United States- the Gold Museum features objects that brilliantly display the charm and the history of Dahlonega. Crisson Gold Mine – Home to the only working Stamp Mill in Georgia dated to the 1800’s; this has been used at several mines in the Dahlonega area and in other states. Placed on the site in the 1960’s, it has ten stamps with each one weighing 450 lbs. each. The purpose of the Stamp Mill is to crush gold bearing rock into sand so it can be processed. See how this mine has contributed to our State Capital and how you can pan for gold plus gemstones at the mine. Wineries and Vineyards - Home to several wine tasting rooms and over five wineries, Dahlonega offers a variety of award-winning wines to locals and visitors from all over the world. Its fertile, mineral-rich soil produces versatile lines of European, French hybrids, and American wine grapes. These venues offer tours, tastings, and impressive scenic views. During seasonal times of the year, annual events like the Dahlonega Wine Trail Weekend; are held every August, to tour each venue. Historic Downtown and Special Events - Dahlonega’s historic public square is the hub of the county’s thriving tourism activity. Lined with brick sidewalks, shops, galleries, and restaurants these charming historical 19th century buildings bring a quaint feeling to any visitor. Entertainment and Festivals are an integral part of Dahlonega’s heritage and it’s not unusual to hear musicians jamming on the square or see artists with their sketch pads taking part in the outdoor beauty.

During the holiday’s, an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration is held in December with lighting of luminaries, festivities, carolers, and Santa on the Square. The Holly Theater - built in 1946 has something to offer for entertainment to locals and tourists alike. The relaxed informal atmosphere makes the theater a great place to enjoy a show for music, comedy or theatre performance. Originally used as a movie house and continued through the 80’s, it was restored with community effort in the 1990’s and re-dedicated as The Holly Theatre Community Center, Inc. and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Amicalola State Park & Lodge is an 829 acre Georgia State Park located just outside of Dahlonega on GA Highway 52. The park’s name is derived from a Cherokee word meaning “tumbling waters”. This park has camping, hiking, picnic shelters, group shelters, trout fishing, geocaching and ranger programs. Twelve miles of hiking trails surround the entryway to the Appalachian Trail. Lodging facilities offer nice accommodations and dining with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Appalachian Trail and Waterfalls - Dahlonega is home to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 plus mile hiking trail that extends up the eastern United States from Georgia to Maine. The famous trail starts on Springer Mountain which is located just a few miles from the in Amicalola State Park & Lodge. Amicalola Falls is the highest waterfall in the Eastern U.S. at an awe-inspiring 729 feet. Numerous Activities - The outdoor views in the Chattahoochee National Forest area are spectacular driving in the mountains, relaxing by Chestatee River fishing, kayaking, swimming, or tubing. Additional recreation includes golfing, horseback riding and ATV trails. Spend time in a cabin for the week or stay for a weekend. Other leisure activities such as Jolie Day Spa offer relaxing massages, spa & salon services. Stop in or call the Dahlonega Visitor’s Bureau at 13 Park Street. Call 1-800-231-5543 or go to www.dahlonega.org for more information. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Holiday 2019

Vogel State Park

Nestled in the heart of the Chattahoochee National Forest, Vogel State Park is one of Georgia’s favorite destinations. Established in 1931, Vogel, is the second oldest state park in Georgia and rises 2,500 feet above sea level. The entire area around Vogel was once linked to the Native Americans and the State Park sits at the base of Blood Mountain, the highest summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Driving from the south, visitors pass through Neel Gap, a beautiful mountain pass near Brasstown Bald, which is the highest point in Georgia. The history of the “Vogel” name starts in the 20th century when Augustus Vogel and Fred Vogel Jr. began a lumber mill in Union County. The mill employed many of the men in the county to cut and process lumber from the 65,000 acres of land owned by the Pfister Vogel Leather Company. They were the second generation of Vogels to run a leather company in Milwaukee with Charles Frederick Pfister, and the lumber in the North Georgia mountains was an excellent source for tannin (or tannic acid), an important raw material in the tanning process. Oak trees are a major source tannic acid, although most trees have at least some tannin in them. Since this required harvesting a large number of oak, the Vogels also set up a lumber mill on the site of present-day Vogel State Park. Unfortunately, the state of Georgia entered an economic downturn in the mid-1920’s and the lumber mill was no longer economically feasible. In 1929 the Vogels donated nearly 259 acres to the state, much of it still encompassed within the 233-acres within Vogel State Park. This park shares a timeless connection with its Civilian Conservation Corps builders that dammed Wolf Creek to form Lake Trahlyta and built housing around the lake for the CCC boys. The 22-acre Lake Trahlyta is named for the Cherokee maiden whose grave sits at the center of Stonepile Gap. Georgia’s poet laureate, Bryon Herbert Reece, was born in a cabin on the land where Lake Trahlyta now sits. The rest of the land donated by the Vogels is under the Chattahoochee National Forest and includes the stone building now known as Mountain Crossings at Walasi-yi and Nottla or Nottely Falls, east of the Byron Herbert Reese

Holiday 2019 | www.mountainlakeguide.com

Trail parking lot. Originally, Walasi-yi was a restaurant run by the state. Directly by Vogel is the Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center that celebrates the life of this famous poet who received numerous awards for his writing. The center has wonderful displays, restoration of the Reece writing studio, authentic farm buildings and equipment, plus selfguided tours. Vogel State Park offers a variety of hiking, swimming, fishing and enjoying family time in a diverse mountain landscape. An easy 1.0 mile hiking trail circles the lake, allowing access to fishing docks and the boathouse. A 0.1 miles side trail takes hikers down to Trahlyta Falls, also know as Spillway Falls. A spur trail off the Trahlyta Lake Loop will take you down to an observation deck at the bottom of the roaring falls! More experienced hikers may enjoy the popular 4-mile Bear Hair Gap and the challenging 13-mile Coosa Backcountry Trail. Helton Creek Falls can be found just minutes away from Vogel. There are two waterfalls to see — the lower and upper falls — and the hike is a short, family-friendly 0.6 miles. If you’re looking for another nearby waterfall hike for the whole family, look no further than DeSoto Falls! The DeSoto Falls hike also takes you to two waterfalls, and has a beautiful picnic area. Cottages, campsites and primitive backpacking sites provide a range of overnight accommodations to visitors to Vogel State Park and is particularly popular during the summer and fall when the Blue Ridge Mountains transform from lush green to a rolling blanket of trees in red, yellow and gold leaves. Reservations are always recommended as events are held year-round. Events at Vogel State Park include: Music in the Park, National Trails Day, Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo, Jr. Ranger Camp, 4th of July Celebration, Mountain Music Festival, Fall Festival and the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. For more Information see gastateparks.org/Vogel or call Park 706-745-2628 Reservations 800-864-7275. Park is open 7 am – 10 pm Office open 8 am – 5 pm.

Top of Bell Mountain Have you ever wanted to feel on Top of the World? Just head to Hiawassee and Bell Mountain Park Historical Site.

Originally Bell Mountain was very prominent rising 3,424 foot of elevation from the “Enchanted Valley” of Hiawassee. Then in the early 1960’s Bell Mountain’s land was purchased to mine for its minerals, and the top was left with a wide gap at the knob. After the mining, Mr. Hal Herrin partner of the Hiawassee Land Company, then later Mountain Realty purchased it in an effort to preserve it from future mining. Bell Mountain primarily became a home for sunset hikes and later on, a place for Jeeps, Hang gliders and other off-road enthusiasts. The mountain also became vandalized at the top with spray paint graffiti from kids and people who took advantage of the remote location that was not monitored. The Hal Herrin Estate graciously donated the 18 acre Bell Mountain Summit to Towns County. in 2016. Today, it has paved the road, established parking area, and in addition to the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook erected a 2nd platform that offers 360 degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains. From Highway 76 – Turn on Shake Rag Rd. and go slow (Speed limit is five MPH.) Hours are 8 AM - 8 PM, and is Closed during inclement weather.

of a stone formation around part of that peak. Stone piles may be formed naturally by the thrust that causes a ridge to crest during the mountain’s formation. However, these mysterious piles of nonnative rock, many of them large, form a long discontinuous zig-zag wall that runs more than 928 feet and varies in height from two to six feet.

Some scholars believe that the formation could be attributed to pre-Columbian native Americans from around 500 A.D. In this regard, it has been likened to a snake formation, similar to the Serpent Mound of Ohio, which held a ceremonial or religious purpose. The absence of religious artifacts supports this theory since it was common practice for Native Americans to take ceremonial objects with them when they moved. The ancient wall runs east to west and the alignment illuminates one side of the wall at sunrise and the other side at sunset as ancient Native American cultures often worshiped the sun.

The myths of the culture who built it abound. Cherokee Indian culture speaks of a race of “moon-eyed” people. The moon-eyed people are a race of people from Cherokee tradition who are said to have lived in Appalachia until the Cherokee expelled them. Another myth revolves around the Welsh prince Madoc, who purportedly sailed to America in 1170. The story contends that Madoc’s colonists intermarried with local Native Americans. These “Welsh Indians” were credited with the construction of a number of landmarks throughout the United States. For more information, call 706-695-2621.
