WSU urges caution after blaze at residence BUNTU GOTYWA WALTER Sisulu University has urged students to use electricity with caution after fire engulfed a unit at the Kuwait residence on the Nelson Mandela Drive campus. The unit was destroyed by the fire, which is suspected to have been caused by a stove which had been left on while students were asleep. Two students were admitted to hospital with injuries suffered in the fire, but they have since been discharged. WSU spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo urged the students to be extracareful when using electrical appliances, to avoid such incidents occurring again. Students said the heaters in-
stalled in their residences were not operating, which forced them to use the stoves to keep warm. They said their rooms were not safe, with electrical wires hanging from the walls. Tukwayo said students should report anything which compromised their safety in residences. She gave the assurance that the university’s residences were safe because the fire had not been caused as a result of any electrician’s negligence but by the error of the students sleeping without switching off the stove. Tukwayo also said the university was working with all its partners and the university community in assisting the students who had lost their belongings during last week’s incident.

Fires destroy Eluhewini classrooms BABALWA NDLANYA PUPILS at the Eluhewini Junior Secondary School in Ngcobo have been left with only three classrooms following fires that destroyed seven classrooms in different incidents. A parent, Mawande Ndude, said someone had started a fire in the evening on May 18 and community members had raised the alarm. They managed to save one classroom. “In June 16 again in the evening another fire started and we again managed to save a classroom. “On July 17, fire damaged a whole block. “On July 23, the second block was also burnt in the middle of the night,” Ndude said. The school was now left with only three classrooms and the children were sharing them while they tried to come up with a solution. He said they did not know why the fires had been set because there was no misunderstanding between anyone. “What shocked us is that the department is threatening to shut down the school and take our children and the teachers to other schools. This is not going to happen. “Instead the department must assist us with temporary structures.” Education Department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said they had decided to close the school for the safety of the teachers and children.

Pupils play in front of classrooms that were destroyed. “Community members are supposed to take care of their school properties and play the major role, but they are the ones who are busy burning the school,” he said. “The person who is busy van-
dalising the school is someone from the community.” He said the district director had been sent to inform teachers and pupils that the school would be closed because it was unsafe.
