WIVES’ IN COURT FIGHT OVER FUNERAL

Chief’s burial saga continues

BUNTU GOTYWA

T sumes.

HE body of Chief Bagcine Mkono will have been in the mortuary for nine months when the court battle over his burial re-

The chief of the Mchonkco in

Ngqeleni was to be buried in November last year, but his wives took to the Mthatha High Court in a fight over burial rights. The second wife of the chief, Nonzwakazi, had already started with funeral preparations when his first wife, Noncedile, filed for an urgent court application to stop the funeral. The first wife claims the chief was

divorced from the second wife and did not want her involved in the funeral preparations after his death. During a court hearing on May 12 the matter was postponed to August. The postponement was because the first wife’s court representatives had allegedly not been paid and were thus no longer available to represent her in court.

The son of the younger wife, Saziso Mkono, said they had already spent close to R80 000 on the funeral. He said he had also spent R43 000 on lawyers and they were now struggling financially. Judge Lusindiso Phakade postponed the matter for the first wife to find a way to raise funds for court representatives.

The family was given time to find representatives as the matter cannot be handled by Legal Aid. Advocate Mwelo Nonkonyane, who represents the older wife, said for now they were challenging the will, the legality of the second wife’s marriage and after that they would challenge the right of the second wife to bury the chief.

EFF leader visits Mthatha informal settlement BUNTU GOTYWA ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters (EFF) commander in chief Julius Malema was not his usual candid self during his visit to Mthatha informal settlements Phola Park and Mandela Park last week Friday. After his supporters waited hours for his arrival, Malema spent less than 30 minutes on his visit to Mandela Park. The quality of the sound system seemed to be the reason he spent so little time on his Mthatha visit.

Student protests mar Fort Hare centenary celebrations TEMBILE SGQOLANA STUDENTS protested at the main entrance of the University of Hare and burnt tyres as President Jacob Zuma was delivering his address at at the university’s centenary celebrations on Friday. Police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, which started the protest peacefully, but changed as the time went on. Zuma said he was honored to be part of celebrating the milestone of Fort Hare. “It was clear from the beginning that Fort Hare was going to be an extraordinary site. “This institution reminds us of the history of our country. Fort Hare defied the objectives of colonial masters and became the instrument of liberation. This institution produced five heads of state, which is a rare thing in the history of mankind,” he said. Zuma said Fort Hare was more than just a college, it was a critical meeting point of great young minds who had the interests of their country and the continent at heart. “It became its ambition to liberate not only South Africa but the rest of the continent. It became a university for Southern Africa and Africa. This was most manifested in the support of such countries like Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia to name a few countries, who made an effort in our struggle,” Zuma said. “It produced a leadership that embraced Africa as a whole. Fort Hare gave future leaders tools to analyse society and to manage a liberat-

Pres. Robert Mugabe and Pres. Jacob Zuma during the University of Fort Hare's Centenary celebrations. PHOTO:TEMBILE SGQOLANA ed and normal society. Zuma said Fort Hare is a success story not only for South Africa but for the continent “It continues to open its doors to sister countries, and does public training in other countries. “Fort Hare is an African university. This university is also the home of the oldest liberation movement in the continent, and this underscores the role of Fort Hare on the continent. Zuma said the sustainable development of

the country depended on how students at Fort Hare and the youth in general behaved. “Knowledge can be used to build or destroy, to liberate or oppress. What it does depends on the orientation of the one who possesses the knowledge. In my view it must be used to build. “Use education to liberate the mind of the Africans. Liberated minds made it possible for many students of this university to defeat oppression,” he said. He said students must reflect and think deeply about whose interests they are serving when

they go all out to destroy their future. “Burning libraries and universities means burning the future”. He said there were some who claimed that people reorsted to violent protest because this was the only language the government understood. “Such a view cannot take South Africa forward. “We have a responsibility as leaders to ensure that our hard-won democracy is protected from those with sinister motives,” he said. He thanked Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe for joining the celebrations and other leaders who attended. Mugabe said it gave him great pleasure as a former student of Fort Hare to join the university in celebrating the centenary. “I was transformed here. It was here that I truly discovered my African identity. “On behalf of Zimbabwe, I extend my gratitude to the University of Fort Hare for achieving this milestone,” he said. Mugabe recalled how they used to hold ANC Youth League meetings and how they contributed in the struggle as students of Fort Hare. “I was privileged to be accepted to study at Fort Hare in 1950. At that time this university was regarded as the Oxford of Africa. It was during those years that some of us became aware of the colonial yoke on our continent.” “This galvanised our commitment to fight against all forms of oppression. This university has produced great politicians and economists who played a huge role in the development of the country.” Mugabe said young people were impatient about the few who are enjoying the economy of the country. “We cannot be equal when economically we are not equal. It has been a long struggle to prove that we are equal and we are human beings. Even now we are still struggling to prove that we can run our own affairs in Africa.” “When we became independent I decided that every child has a right to education and that our education naturally must not be primary. It must be tertiary right up to university. He said they needed to accelerate gender equality, starting with the education of the girl child. “Previously women were regarded as inferior to men and the access to education must bridge that gender bias. “That is the only way we can get our women to participate effectively in the development of our continent,” he said. African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma also attended the event and said she was honoured to be part of the centenary celebrations.

Street kid given decent send-off Bail bid in ‘heart-theft’ murder case postponed BUNTU GOTYWA EVERY person is God’s creation and everyone deserves a decent send-off after passing on from this earth. These were the words of Bishop Tshepo Machaea at the funeral of a street child, 13-year-old Nonto Mantangeni, last week. The church and the King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) and OR Tambo municipalities joined forces to give him a proper burial. Nonto died after being hit by a taxi while running away from a mentally challenged man who tried to stab him. Nonto was from Mthatha informal settlement Polar Park, where he had to sleep outside as the family did not have enough rooms. He ended up living on the streets. The news of his death prompted Machaea and his congregation, Ibandla lasemthini Evangelical Movement, to do something to send a message that many South Africans are being denied basic human rights and have no homes. Machaea organised a funeral with the sup-

port of the King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) and OR Tambo municipalities. The funeral brought together municipalities, church leaders and traditional leaders. “What we are preaching is for people to treat each other with the same respect,” Machaea said. “We know his home; he was literally sleeping outside because at home there is only a room for the mother and father. “As a congregation close to them, we know the conditions that cause them to sleep in the streets. We want to teach the spirit of Ubuntu by asking people to meet and discuss with the communities and tell us their grievances. “The municipality also promised to do something by at least having a shelter because it is not a normal situation to have children sleeping outside.” Nonkosi Peppingle of OR Tambo corporate services said the situation was unfortunate for the family and said the government should act to improve the living conditions in the community to avoid such heartbreak. She said communities like Polar Park needed urgent government intervention.

THE bail application by two men accused of murdering a man and removing his heart will be heard again on June 7 after the accused complained of poor health at their last appearance in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court. Unathi Sititshi and Khusela Mkhuliswa, both 21, told the court they were suffering from health concerns. Sititshi said he was experiencing pain from 20 old stab wounds, while Mkhuliswa said he had a sore throat, which made it difficult for him to eat. The men are facing charges of murder, housebreaking, robbery, defeating the ends of justice and attempted rape. They are alleged to have killed Lubabalo Vukulwana of Ngweni village in Sakhela location, Mthatha. Vukulwana was found underneath a bed with

his intestines and heart removed. The motive for the murder and the removal of the body parts is not yet known. A representative of the accused, Buntu Qakumbana, was accused by prosecutor Thembisa Ntloko of using delaying tactics with his application for postponement of the case. The two men have been behind bars for three months. She said the accused should have told the court beforehand about their state of health. She asked the court to consider the interests of the community in the matter and said the rights of the accused should not be above those of the victims. Magistrate Gugulethu Namba said it was in the best interests of the law to postpone the case until both accused were fit to enough to stand in front of the court again.– BUNTU GOTYWA

Land claimants warn of further protests BUNTU GOTYWA LAND claimants from four Mthatha villages say the municipality should brace itself for a shutdown in places such as the R61 between Mthatha and Ngcobo and that they may cause chaos at the Mthatha Airport. The villagers, who claim they were moved from the Gqogqorha administrative area in 2011, say it has been a long time since the government made payout promises. They say there will be disruptions if their money is not given to them soon. A task team representing the villagers says each year the government promises them pay-

ment within six months and they have grown tired of the empty promises. Task team member Bathobele Mila said it had been the same story every year. “They always tell us the same thing every year. “In June they tell us our payments will come through in December, then in December they tell us to wait for June the following year. “People are tired of the promises made each and every year so they have decided to show their anger by demonstrating and promise more protests if their money doesn’t come,” Mila said. The residents from Gqogqorha have been receiving payments which they say is rental money, but this is no longer welcome and the actual

land payout must be made. The land they are claiming is now occupied by Stocks Langeni Forest, a farming and woodland company. The task team recently met Department of Rural Development and Land Reform officials. At the top of the agenda were the reasons for the delays and the actual date the villagers could expect their payments. Mila said the officials had given them nothing new and instead had wanted to start the process of verification, which had already been done a number of times. The officials who attended the meeting were Themba Ntombela of the department and Land Claims Commission official Lebjane Maphutha.

Maphutha said verification had been a major issue holding up the payments for the Gqogqorha people. However all the verifications would be complete by next month. He also stressed the need to properly verify the claimants to avoid fraud. “The meeting we had with the claimants was called by the office of the mayor of OR Tambo and we addressed the claimants about the difficulties we have been facing with their claims. “But we promise by December all of them will have received their payments,” Maphutha said. Mila said he was not sure what the community’s response would be when they brought back the news of another postponed payout date.

SOME R500-million in land claims is still with the government as it struggles to locate the beneficiaries, Land Restitution Support director Zukile Pityi revealed last week. He was the main speaker invited by the residents of Upper Ndungunyeni in Ngqeleni to talk about the land-claim process. He said the R500-million was for people whose claims had been approved, but the government could not locate them to give them their funds. He said he and his team were visiting as many communities as possible to reach anyone who had a claim to submit. Pityi also appealed to those who had submitted claims and not received their payment to come forward because they

could not reverse the funds without everyone getting their share. “There are many people whose claims have been approved, but we cannot find them,” he said. “We are not sure whether they moved from their homes or whether they are not aware. But we will do everything possible to make sure the money reaches those people because this is a lot of money. “It’s millions and we can’t do anything about it because it is attached to particular people,” he said. He said they still faced a huge problem of people submitting claims without including family members and without confirmation from the village they lived in. He says this was part of the problem that had slowed the process of giving back what was due to people. Chief Zanokhanyo Ndamase said his village had submitted their land claim a

long time ago and even received a certificate of confirmation. He said it was important to have Pityi address the villagers as many were not aware of some particulars of land claims. Ndamase said many of the villagers in Upper Ndunyeni had submitted claims, but might have been left behind during the verification process.

Black women-owned enterprise set on conquering the region DETERGENT specialist Bee Brite Chemicals & Cleaning Services was relaunched recently at the Mdantsane Community Hall in the Eastern Cape. The 100% black women-owned company, led by Portia Mcono, will now be known as Brite Wave Products & Cleaning Services. Brite Wave, which manufactures and distributes cleaning detergents (dishwashing liquid, bleach, shampoo, degreaser and soap) for domestic and industrial markets, was founded by Mcono in 2008. Soon after establishing the company, Mcono joined the chemical manufacturing incubator (Chemin) to receive training and support for the purpose of understanding the industry better and to manufacture high-quality products. The company started with only two employees

and now has 28 across all its three branches in Mdantsane, Cradock and Butterworth. Mcono said the fourth branch would soon be opened in Grahamstown. The business has grown steadily with continued support, training and workshops received from different agencies such as Transnet and Seda. Along the way, Mcono entered some business competitions as she believed her company had something special to offer and could be competitive. Most recently, last year Mcono entered Eskom’s Business Investment Competition (BIC), which rewards outstanding work in entrepreneurship and encourages small and medium enterprises to thrive in leading and driving economic development.

EFF leader visits Mthatha informal settlements Continued from page 1

The congestion in a small tent on a sports field also did not help matters as everyone wanted a piece of the EFF leader. This was the second-last stop of the EFF in their Eastern Cape election campaign. Malema used the little time he spent there, to point fingers at the ruling party for their “inability to provide services for its people”. He said towns like Mthatha were no longer of the same eminence they had once been as a result of the ANC. He said all this was endorsed by the people who still vote for Mandela when voting for the ANC. “Nelson Mandela is no more.

Mcono’s company was named as a runnerup in the manufacturing category of the competition, receiving a R50 000 cash prize. To her, winning such a prize came as affirmation that she was on the right track. She used the prize money from the BIC to buy raw materials to increase her production as her customer base had also grown over time. “Participating in the BIC helped my company to gain more customers as more people and big companies started to develop trust in both my company and products,” said Mcono. Over the years, Mcono encountered various challenges around the name of her company (Bee Brite Chemicals & Cleaning Services), which necessitated a rebrand and name change. Much of the confusion stemmed from the ‘Bee’

Voting for the ANC is voting for Zuma,” Malema said. He briefly touched on the decline of the South African economy, which he said the ANC and Zuma had destroyed. “South Africa used to be number one, but now we are number three in Africa economically because of the corrupt ANC.” The EFF leader did not go through the party’s manifesto and promised another date to address the OR Tambo region. He urged his leadership in the region to organise a stadium for party meetings and said they were the government-in-waiting and people should be organised on a bigger platform.

6 Former Mnquma mayor Duna laid to rest News

May 26, 2016 Mthatha Express

MNQUMA executive mayor, Baba Ganjana has saluted the late former mayor, William Mabone Duna, as a selfless leader who commanded the municipality through hardship. He was speaking during a memorial service organised by the Mnquma council in Centane’s town hall last week. Duna died two weeks ago when his car was swept away by a strong stream as he attempted to cross the Nxaxho River in Centane. He was accompanied by a 49-year-old woman who was his neighbour at the time. The woman’s body was found on the river bank by community members, while Duna’s body was retrieved by police divers from East London. Ganjana said Duna had been a hero in his dedication to the struggle. “His work will be missed and we promise to follow in the footsteps of the work he was doing,” Ganjana said. “If we can compare this time and with the past, there were hardly any cases of infighting in the council during his leadership.

“There was dignity because he focused on bringing the council together,” Ganjana said. Duna’s son, Mayibuye, said the death of his father had come as shock and it had not been easy to accept the news. He said the family was proud of their father for his contribution to the struggle of the nation and the role he had played in the Mnquma municipality. “We are grateful for the efforts made by the municipality to arrange the memorial service for him. “He played a huge role in the municipality and the family is proud of everything he did,” he said. Duna was elected mayor of Mnquma municipality in 2007 and resigned a year later to join the Congress of the People. At the time of his death he was a member and one of the instituting members of the United Congress alongside former deputy defence minister, Mluleki George. He was laid to rest in his home village in Nxaxho, Centane, last Saturday. – BUNTU GOTYWA

Department aims to support women-owned companies WATER and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has announced that her department is planning a multipurpose dam to be built by a women-owned company. Mokonyane said that during a pre-budget vote media briefing in parliament recently that as part of transforming the water sector industry, her department would soon appoint a womenonly company to build the dam. “We will soon be able to speak of a dam developed by women, one that will be designed, constructed, operated and maintained by women and women-owned companies and SMMEs.

“These are the outcomes of transformation we expect to see realised and happening here in our country and during this term of office.” She said that the department was dealing with the anomalies that had previously characterised the water sector. Steps were being taken to eradicate single-purpose dams that were often used by a few and for recreational purposes only, to the exclusion of communities who lived around these dams. The department would no longer develop dams in which ordinary citizens were without clean drinking water while the precious re-

source served industries that were owned by a few. “Over the last 22 years, the government has built nine new dams as part of extending access to water for our people. “Whereas previously our people were neither consulted nor accommodated as beneficiaries in such developments, presently we are incorporating community interests and participation as a key element in the delivery of water services infrastructure,” the minister said. She said they planned to use existing and future infrastructure projects to promote “the de-

velopment of new industries within the sector and open opportunities for black industrialists to explore opportunities within this sector. “As the department, working with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, we have participated and are actively involved in the Back-2-Basics programme being implemented in 27 priority district municipalities across the country.” She boasted that the department had delivered access to clean drinking water to 80% of the country’s population and decent sanitation to another 80%. – SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

8 New move to end service delivery protests News

TO put an end to service delivery protests by disgruntled community members, Premier Phumulo Masualle launched the provincial ‘Operation Masiphathisane’ in Bizana, Monti location, on Wednesday last week.

All the MECs, except for Education MEC Mandla Makupula and Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August, and mayors from the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo districts were part of the programme where the premier ordered the municipalities to form war rooms in all their wards to address service-delivery challenges. “We are here to make sure that we live by the

constitution,” he said. “Before, we did not implement programmes in an integrated manner by making sure that people are part of government all in one place. “So with this programme, we will have all the government departments and stakeholders listening to the grievances of our people and making sure that they are being addressed.” He said challenges of development would be a thing of the past. “We are here to show our commitment to our people before they lose their cool and destroy what they already have and we will keep monitoring the success of these war rooms,” he said. All the wards in the province have been given six months to have war rooms as a platform to

table processes and challenges in each ward and full-time employees will be stationed in these war rooms to receive the challenges and views of the community members. Alfred Nzo district municipality mayor Eunice Diko said she was excited that the programme had been piloted in her district. “This will strengthen public participation and Integrated Development Programme consultations in our municipalities and here in ward 19 we have started collecting a data base of all the community challenges to be taken to the relevant departments,” Diko said. She added that the war rooms would address all the challenges with all the departments present to put an end to service delivery pro-

tests. Nompendulo Jayiya Xhakana, Masiphathisane war room ward 19 chairperson, said they had seen that the programme had come to root out poverty in their area. “In our war room, we have representatives from ward committees, traditional leaders, community policing forums, the taxi industry, the Council of Churches, school governing bodies and several government departments and it is open on weekdays for people coming in with grievances,” Xhakana said. She said they held monthly meetings with residents and conducted door-to-door campaigns to gather information and send it to the relevant departments.

Scientists develop rapid TBscreening tool REPORTER A POINT-OF-CARE rapid diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB) has been developed by a multinational team of scientists led by researchers at Stellenbosch University. “This low-cost screening test has the potential to significantly speed up TB diagnosis in resource-limited settings,” said co-inventor Professor Gerhard Walzl of Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The test is conducted on blood obtained from a finger-prick and can make a TB diagnosis in less than an hour. “Health-care workers with minimal training will be able use the test at grass-roots level and get immediate access to screening test results,” Walzl said. The diagnostic test is a hand-held, battery-operated instrument that will measure chemicals in the blood of people with possible TB. The device is in the development phase and its accuracy and efficacy will be tested in five African countries over the next three years by the ScreenTB consortium, a team of TB experts from eight African and European partnering institutions. Other recent advances in TB diagnostics have radically improved diagnostic times, but high costs and the sophisticated equipment required have made this technology inaccessible to many. “People in remote areas with high TB incidence still do not benefit from the newer developments and face long diagnostic delays and often multiple return visits to clinics before they are diagnosed,” Walzl said. The new test will be able to provide near-immediate results that will enable a person with TB to be diagnosed and started on treatment during a single visit to a health-care facility.

Help fight hunger with Shoprite, Checkers this winter

REPORTER THE Shoprite Group is helping to fight hunger in vulnerable communities this winter. Through its surplus-food donation programme and mobile soup kitchens, the retailer is providing relief to thousands of hungry people across the country every day. All Shoprite and Checkers stores across the country have a no-wastage policy, and surplus food is donated to organisations such as Foodbank South Africa, who in turn redistribute the food to hundreds of verified non-profit organisations collectively feeding thousands of hungry people daily. Last year alone, the group donated close to R100 million worth of surplus food to organisations in need. Shoprite has a fleet of 19 mobile soup kitchens servicing vulnerable communities across the country on a daily basis. More than 27 million meals have already been served since the mobile soup kitchens became operational in February 2007, and it continues to be an integral part of the Group’s actions to alleviate hunger in local communities. Hunger relief is a core pillar of the group’s corporate social investment strategy. Shoprite and Checkers customers can join forces to fight hunger in needy communities this winter by simply donating R5 or more to the group’s #ActForChange Fund at any store across the country. Shoprite and Checkers set up the #ActForChange Fund in March this year following requests by consumers wanting to be part of efforts that make a difference in communities affected by natural disasters such as the recent droughts, as well as in those communities experiencing serious challenges like poverty and food insecurity.

School pupils enjoy a cup of soup with the Shoprite team. The #ActForChange Fund has already raised well over R200 000 from customer donations since its launch and hopes to raise even more through the winter months. Kate Hamilton, fund development manager at Foodbank South Africa, said: “It costs FoodBank South Africa R1.08 to provide

enough food for one meal, so a donation of R5 will allow us to provide nearly five meals. “Considering that more than 13.8 million South Africans go hungry every day, we have a collective responsibility to work towards ending hunger in our country – and every little donation helps.”

You can #ActForChange this winter by donating R5 or more at any Shoprite or Checkers till-point nationwide. Also check out Foodbank South Africa’s website on www.foodbanksa.org for more information on how your donation will be used to make a difference.

Price of potatoes comes down LOURENS SCHOEMAN THERE is some good news for consumers – the price of potatoes has come down drastically over the past three weeks, which means the high prices of the past few months are over, for now. This is according to Potatoes South Africa (PSA). Over the past six months the demand for potatoes exceeded the supply, which was caused by the extreme drought. This is why the consumer price for potatoes was so high, with a 10 kg bag of potatoes costing more than R100 in some places. According to Pieter van Zyl, agricultural economist for PSA, the average price of potatoes dropped by half over the past three weeks, from R60 to R30 per bag. Many producers have recently yielded better crops and industry expects the price of potatoes will range between R30 and R40 until at least the end of spring this year. The price is expected to increase again in August. “Prices have started increasing since November last year, even though some regions delivered the best crops ever. Lots of potatoes were marketed. Then the drought came and consequently almost no potatoes rea-

ched the markets. “The prices continued to increase and in January and February this year the highest price ever, more than R100 for a bag of 10 kg potatoes of high quality, was fetched. “The heat damaged the potatoes in many regions where farmers could irrigate, and as a result, less potatoes were available on the market,” said Van Zyl. “From January to April this year a total of 5.67 million less of 10 kg bags, or 17% less, was sold on the national fresh produce market, compared to the same period last year. Market prices were 93% higher this year as a result.” It is expected that about 50 000 ha of potatoes will be planted for the 2016 marketing year and indications are that there will not be fewer potatoes planted this year than in 2015. According to Van Zyl, the consumer is not exploited by the wholesaler, because they are in constant competition with other wholesalers and cannot afford to drastically increase their prices. “Here and there retailers can increase their prices, but it doesn’t really benefit them, because these days consumers do their homework and know where they can get good quality products at affordable prices.”

RECIPE: POTATO AND BACON SOUP

Wholesome soup to keep winter, and high food prices, at bay

WITH dire warnings of huge food price increases already manifesting in many of the staple items in our grocery baskets, one should strike while the iron is hot, or cook using ingredients such as potatoes, which at the moment have not been hit by food price inflation (see story on page 5). Mthatha Express editor Bettie Giliomee, this week shares one of

her family’s favourite potato recipes, creamy Potato and Bacon Soup, which is always a winner whether it’s winter or summer.

Potato Soup with Bacon and Nutmeg (Serves 6) Ingredients:

50 ml butter or margarine 2 onions, diced 1kg or 6 large potatoes, peeled and diced 250 g rindless bacon salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

5 ml garlic, crushed 1 litre chicken stock 180 ml cream (can be replaced with milk) 345 ml milk Ground nutmeg, to taste

Method: . Heat the butter in a pot and saute the onion, bacon, garlic and potato lightly for about 10 minutes without letting it brown. . Add the chicken stock as well as salt and pepper. Heat until it reaches boiling point. Turn down the heat, cover the pot and let it simmer for between 20 and 25 minutes until the potatoes are soft. . Liquidise until almost smooth and stir in milk and nutmeg. Heat until boiling point and then simmer for 5 minutes. Add the cream and serve warm. Optional: Garnish with croutons, chives and crispy bacon pieces.

This is a disgrace? Guys, when are you going to change your bad ways because you are putting your lives in danger the way you are doing things. I wonder kwenzeke ntoni boys? You remember last week there were lot of graduation ceremonies in and around UTA. A vrou of our friends gave us a ring asking the whereabouts of her hubby as he normally used to spend the weekend with us. But now we do not spend time with him and during the conversation with the wife we clarified our side. Waphinda lo sisi early hours of Monday ebuza ukuba asikamboni na and ucela siye kumfunisa kwezi ndawo sidla ngokuhlala kuzo phambi kokuba aye ku-report a missing person. Okay, simncedile u-sisters sajikileza kwacaca ukuba akukho mntu ukhe wambona. Sakhumbula ukufuwonela enye i-outie whom he used to spend time with in our absence. Ithi le outie imgqibele Sunday late esithi uyagoduka ephuma ngendlela yasezifemini Vulindlela Heights, UTA. Ngenene silandele nakhona sesikuncama. OW!! Nantsi le outie ingene evalini yomgaqo mara ikari ayilimalanga kakhulu itiphile ayazi nokuba zazolukele phi, nemoto idume kwaphela igazolo. Uyabona ke le nto yeli jiki

lenu? Kuncede ukuba kungaveli bantu bazizigebenga ngoku aleleyo kungenjalo bekothathwa kwa loo moto. Naxa sizama ukumvusa he does not recognise us until de kuthethe inkosikazi yakhe. Mawwuu!!! Kunzima ezweni sokhile. Iyethandeka daai ding mara yingozi especially xa ungubhayizani. I wonder umntu xa esisahluleki kutheni engavele aselele endlini yakhe kunokuba abe ebeka ubomi bakhe emngciphekweni. Can you please listen to what gossip team tells you? We really don’t know how many times we have told people ukuba no one can make you rich while he/she is poor himself or herself. You cannot drive an old model of a car and can make another person a millionaire. Kutheni ungaqali ngawe kanti? Qha asazi ukuba abantu bakuthi baluthwa yintoni. Bathi bakubethwa ke babuye bagijime beze kuthi ukuba masibhale ngabantu bathathe iimali zabo, ngathi thina khange sibaxelele ngobungozi kokwenziwa isinhanha lihlwembu. We were listening to an old lady who was telling us how the traditional herbalist from a neighbouring African state robbed her of a large sum of money. The herbalist ran away

with her life savings and pension money estimated at R850 000. While the gogo was attending a make-rich course at herbalist zozo’s hut she heard voices that she believed were from her ancestors because they promised her R5million if she surrendered all her money. These guys have a strategy. While the herbalist conducts his crooked duties there is another person underneath the mat as they have dug a big hole. This person talks in different languages to the patient while the herbalist conducts his mission. This was discovered when the police went to hunt down this herbalist. When they pulled up the animal-skin mat they found a big, deep hole where the guy was standing and talking to the patient, who would believe the voices were coming from the ancestors. Believe it or not these guys are using their common sense, if not minds, to con our people. Even after this advice from the gossip team, you will hear of more victims in the near future. Fundani apha kuthi bantu bakithi akekho umntu angathathi imali ekhona athi uzakwenzela eninzi. He was not aware, but his blood told him about his death Dear readers sometimes we turn our backs on the crucial things in our lives despite them

telling us about the dangers ahead. This pains the entire gossip team because we saw the danger coming. Because our buddy was totally drunk and unable to listen to anyone who was trying to advise him, he died with his three friends in a vehicle accident. This is the result of alcohol. This guy, before he left where we were chilling, came to us and told us he was leaving to go to a funeral in Mzikhulu. This was during the wee hours. He demanded more booze but we refused because alcohol and slumber do not match. We were trying to stop him from going, but he continued on his way. Mara before dawn we received a call from his sister telling us that they were no more – the car had just rolled in Weza Forest near Harding and all of thpse in the car had died. I wonder how many people have died after they were told to stop driving drunk. But even his blood was telling him there was danger ahead because before he left, he told us that perhaps it was the last time we would see him or try to block his way. Uyabona ke umzimba ubusitsho ukuba ukufa kufikile. Please listen to what the umgosi team is telling you because this is a real story.

The man behind the popular ‘Ezengingqi’ on KCR BUNTU GOTYWA HE is particularly known for his hard-hitting dialogues with his listeners every Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 9pm. Izzy Mtebese has only been a radio presenter for two years, but has captured the ears of thousands of Khanya Community Radio (KCR) listeners with his unique presenting skills. His show, which is lauded by his colleagues as being responsible for the escalating listenership of KCR, is a weekly talk show. Mtebele said this was his calling, to use his God-given gift of communication for positive influence on the community. “My love for radio started at a very young age,” he said. “Growing up I listened to broadcast legends, the likes of Fikile Lubisi and Mzukisi Solani. Those are the people I am studying to better myself.”

He said the adulation he received from the listeners was the result of the work he put into his programme. “I realise that in this industry if you are not a good listener you are not going very far. “I put a lot of research into my programme to make sure that I give listeners an informative show.” Although his dream is making it on national radio, he says he is comfortable knowing he is making a difference in his community. He is young in broadcasting, but he already has one lesson for anyone trying make it in the field: “Don’t fake anything. MTHATHA CHILD ABUSE RESOURCE CENTRE COLUMN: FIKISWA MASISO AND NOKULUNGA NTAPANE

Protecting children is a societal responsibility CHILD protection refers to the protection of children from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989 stated the right to protection in article 19. The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children 1990 highlights the right to protection in different articles, like article 10, 16, 18 and 21. These articles talk about protection of children against child abuse and torture and protection of their privacy. Child protection starts from protecting a child at an early stage. Childhood is a phase in which the human being is more vulnerable because she or he has not yet finished developing physically or mentally.

Furthermore, the child requires particular attention and protection. There is a huge need to establish a protective environment for children. Not only is the immediate family the first line of protection, but extended family and caregivers are also responsible for building a protective and loving environment. A safer environment for children must be ensured by all, that is parents, caregivers, the community and the state. The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 states that every child is a unique individual with a specific need, therefore any decision taken concerning the child must address the best interest of the child. Fulfillments of this right enable children to take an active role in their own protec-

tion against abuse, violence and exploitation and they become proactive citizens. It helps them to be vocal about issues that affect them. The Mthatha Child Abuse Resource Centre as an advocacy-based organisation is using a model called the Children’s Rights Community Development Project. It’s ideology is grounded on the idea that child protection is everyone’s responsibility. This model is being implemented through sensitising community members with its leadership (traditional, political and religious), parents, community capacitated structures including school governing body members and teachers on children’s rights and child protection as it is key for children. This emphasises the theme for the 2016 Child Protec-

tion Week: “Working together to protect children”. A big role still needs to be played by the communities in ensuring that children are protected. Children are the victims of neglect in rural areas, where they are left in the care of grandparents who are unable to provide them with essential needs. They are the victims of rape and child labour and many other forms of abuse. Life is a journey and children are walking that journey as well. Together we can assist children to have a protected life. Children are the future of the world. For more information, contact the Mthatha Child Abuse Resource Centre at 047 531 1103 or email ucarc@intekom.co.za.

Ford’s Figo now available in sedan and new-look hatch

Exterior With the all-new Ford Figo, the designers incorporated Ford’s Kinetic 2.0 design language, as seen on the likes of the latest Ford Fusion and Focus. The five-door hatch incorporates a rising roofline with a sporty spoiler and good looking tailgate with a dynamic looking design. The sedan version has a more conservative styling and is more rounded at the back for a bigger boot. Interior The interior is also completely new and boasts some innovative smart features, which (depending on model) include a new device-docking station, Bluetooth with Voice Activation, the programmable MyKey® function, as well as electronic automatic temperature control. The all-new Figo has 20 smart storage spaces and convenience features which include bottle holders in both front doors that can hold a 1.5-litre and a 1.0-litre bottle at the same time, a large glove box that is big enough to fit a laptop, three cup holders for front seat occupants and a convenient bin for rear passengers at the back of the centre console. The Sedan offers up to 445 litres of luggage space in the boot with folddown rear seats increasing its loading capacity and versatility. The seat-backs of the all-new Hatch (Trend and Titanium) have a 60/40 split for greater flexibility. Smart technology The all-new Figo features impressive smart technologies that help people to integrate their car into their digital lives. MyFord Dock® is a first-in-class feature and standard in the Ambiente and Trend spec vehicles. This allows mobile phones, MP3 players and satellite navigation systems to be mounted and charged and to be integratedinto the car’s entertainment system. Ford’s SYNC® integrated multimedia and connectivity system is standard equipment in the top of the range Figo Titanium. SYNC® lets drivers interact hands-free with their mobile devices and entertainment system with voice commands. On the Ambiente and Trend models, a standard four-speaker audio

system is provided that includes a radio/CD unit with MP3-compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as USB and Aux inputs. The Titanium further gains remote audio controls on the steering wheel. The all-new Figo Titanium also features Ford’s MyKey® with which owners can set sensible restrictions for drivers with less experience, such as activating a maximum speed limit, or a persistent seatbelt minder that mutes the audio system volume and continues to play a chime until front-seat occupants fasten their seatbelts.

pulls nicely and this 1.5 engine delivers more than enough power. The transmission has a sport mode as well. The Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) provides lighter steering effort at low speeds – for parking and in-city manoeuvring – and heavier, more precise feel at high speeds for greater stability and confidence on highways. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generates 77kW of power, matched to 138Nm of torque and its combined cycle fuel consumption is stated as 5.6L/100km.

Safety It features a minimum of dual front airbags on the lower spec models, while the Titanium version has six airbags- including side and curtain airbags. There are ABS brakes across the range, plus Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist on the top derivatives. This holds the vehicle for up to three seconds as the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the accelerator.

Test drive of the Figo 1.5 TDCi Trend hatch The diesel models are powered by a 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi engine that develops 74kW and 215Nm with the average fuel consumption stated as 4.1L/100km. It has a five-speed manual gearbox. I liked the new hatch shape with its sporty look and while you will not often equate a sporty looking car with a diesel engine, this engine performs very well with impressive fuel consumption figures. The diesel engine is a bit loud when starting the car, but once it gets going and out on the open road the engine sound is hardly noticeable. The new instrument cluster design is an improvement on the old look. The hatch offers very adequate boot space and the number and placement of storage compartments is quite nifty. It offers a solid ride and can go quickly on the open road.

The test drives: Figo 1.5 litre petrol PowerShift Titanium Sedan This is the highest spec petrol version of the all-new Figo featuring an auto transmission and retailing at R203 900. The sedan’s exterior is a bit too conservatively styled to my taste and doesn’t look as attractive as the new hatch model – but sedans are by nature probably supposed to look more practical than sporty. And the practicability of its big boot space makes up for this. The interior boasts bits and pieces from the Fiesta and other Ford models and is quite roomy with ample legroom. It is a basic car but has handy gadgets such as Ford Sync, steering wheel controls and USB ports, electric windows and nice storage spaces. The automatic transmission is a bonus for me. While you will always have a bit of a problem with a heavy foot on the accelerator when you are driving a car with a smallish engine coupled to an automatic transmission, the Figo’s advanced 6-speed PowerShift Auto transmission is quite capable and willing. One soon learns how to gently increase the pressure on the accelerator so not to struggle to speed up quickly when overtaking. And once it gets going on the open road, it goes quite well. It

WHEN the first Ford Figo came out in SA, I liked the performance and features of the car, but it lacked that certain “je ne sais quoi” that its competitors, such as the Chevrolet Spark, had as far as exterior looks went. Which is strange, considering how good Ford’s Fiesta and Focus feature in the design stakes. Ford has, however, redeemed itself with its relaunch in mid-October last year of the Figo – offering it for the first time in hatch and sedan versions. And in my opinion the dynamic, sporty-looking hatch version is a vast improvement on the first model, while the sedan version could still do with a little more oomph. The new Figo is available in three specification levels i.e the Ambiente, Trend and highest spec Titanium. One has the choice between 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, as well as manual and PowerShift Auto transmission options. Express on Wheels recently took two of the new Ford Figo models on the mom’s taxi route for a week – the Ford Figo Sedan 1.5 litre petrol PowerShift (Auto) transmission in the high spec Titanium version (retailing at R209 900) and the diesel hatchback with manual transmission, the 1.5 TDCi Trend (retailing at R203 900).

5km fun run draws large turnout ANELE RAZIYA THE 5km Dr Mafuya Fun Run was a huge success last week, with more than 100 athletes taking part in the event in Butterworth. The founder of the fun run, Phelisa Mafuya, expressed her happiness about the number of athletes who took part. “I’m happy about the turnout of athletes for our annual 5km fun run and it seems we are growing every year, Mafuya said. The event was celebrating 15 years of existence in Butterworth. Mafuya said they had been going for a long time, but she felt that there were many things that needed to be done to improve the standard of the race. “We’ve been doing this for a while, but our wish one day is to get a huge sponsor in order to boost our prizes, she said. Her big dream is to see the fun run being televised and getting a major sponsor so that athletes can be motivated more by the prizes. It was the first time last week that the winning athlete won R500.
