Great boxing development in Mthatha NCEBA DLADLA
BOXING has been growing in leaps and bounds in the Mthatha region in the recent past. This is albeit Mthatha-born boxers having moved to other regions and provinces in pursuit of better opportunies or the proverbial greener pastures. Boxers like former Female SA Welterweight champion, Rita Mrwebi, whose return-fight against Julie Tshabala at the Orient Theatre in East London at the weekend was declared a draw, like being introduced as coming from Mthatha in the Transkei, even though they are currently based in Johannesburg. Former IBF world Junior Lightweight kingpin Mzonke “The Rose of Khayelitsha” Fana was born and raised in Qumbu before he moved to Cape Town. Fana had his recent outing against Themba Tshicila at Tsolo Junction Hall for the WBF Intercontinental Championship at his birth-place, Qumbu. “This was thanks to the support by the local Qumbu Municipality,” according to Boxing South African (BSA) Eastern Cape Service Provider Phakamile Jacobs. According to Jacobs, boxing was able to thrive in the Mthatha area thanks to the financial injention from the Qumbu and O.R Tambo District Municipalities. “There are boxers like the current South African and WBA Pan African Miniflyweight kingpin Simphiwe Khonco and Luthando Mbumbulwana (a useful Junior Featherweight) that still call Mthatha home. Khonco draws big crowds in the area when he fights,” noted Jacobs, adding that former

Bantamweight WBF Intercontinental champion Bulelani Nama was still based in Mthatha. “We’re working hard for boxing development here,” said Khonco’s mentor, Onemore-time Dyonase. According to Dyonashe, there were currently seven local boxing clubs that train both professional and amateur boxers in the area, including one club in Butterworth. Dyonase said that Khonco, the first boxer from the area to win national and international boxing titles, was hard at work for his upcoming contest for the vacant IBO International Miniflyweight title against unbeaten Duncan Village, East London’s Nhlanhla Ngamntwini at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday October 5. East London’s Mamali Boxing Promotions head Siphatho Handi, who looks after Khoncos’ business, confirmed the fight. Dyonase said a handful of their amateur boxers would be involved in the EC Cadet Championships at the Mqanduli Community Hall this Saturday August 30.
