F

ORMER State President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandelawill return to his place of birth on Saturday.

After mourning services around the country, and him lying in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria this focus now moves to the Eastern Cape. The former President’s remains will be transported to the Eastern Cape on Saturday from Air Force Base Waterkloof in Pretoria, where the ruling party will bid Madiba farewell. Also on this day, a procession will take place from Mthatha to Qunu where the Thembu community will conduct a traditional ceremony. On Sunday, 15 December, a funeral service and interment ceremony will take place at President Mandela’s home and final resting place at Qunu in the Eastern Cape. Governmental agencies have given their assurance that the Eastern Cape will be ready to accommodate the influx of Heads of State and Government, international organisations, eminent persons from around

the world and thousands of mourners. Eastern Cape Provincial Arrive Alive spokesperson Tshepo Machaea said they are ready in terms of traffic control for the funeral. On Monday Machaea said they had identified routes around Qunu which were going to be controlled by the traffic officials for 24hours. Road closures that have been in place since Friday include the N2 both directions for about 2km at Qunu. On N2 the N2 at Tsolo traffic was re-direct on the R396 towards Maclear, while at Ndabakazi, traffic was redirected to R61 towards Tsomo and Engcobo. “There will not be a shortage of officials as our municipality and the nearby metro municipalities will provide traffic officials to assist also in the Public Viewing Places.” Depending on the influx of traffic, more roads could be closed while roads will definitely be closed for the funeral procession.

Portrait of the father of a nation NELSON Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of South Africa’s democracy, passed away peacefully in the company of his family around 20h50 on December 5. The man who was to become one of the world’s greatest icons was born in Mvezo, Transkei on 18 July 1918, to Nongaphi Nosekeni and Henry Gadla Mandela. His father was the key counsellor/advisor to the Thembu royal house. After his father’s death in 1927, the young Rolihlahla became the ward of Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo, the acting regent of the Thembu nation. It was at the Thembu royal homestead that his personality, values and political views were shaped. When he was only 25 years old, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress. The young Mandela also qualified and practised as a lawyer. Together with Oliver Tambo he opened the first black legal practice in Johannesburg. He married Evelyn Nomathamsanqa Mase in 1945. They were married for 14 years and had 4 children: Thembekile (1946), Makaziwe (1947), who died at 9 months, Makgatho (1951) and Makaziwe (1954). The couple divorced in 1958. He was instrumental in the formation of the radical African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the 1940s and was elected

the league’s National Secretary in 1948 and President in 1952. Much of the years that followed saw Mandela deeply involved in activism, rallying for political change against the increasingly aggressive apartheid government. During this time he was incarcerated several times under the apartheid laws and banned from political activity. Realising that the ANC needed to prepare for a more intensive struggle, he became an instrumental force behind the formation of a new section of the liberation movement, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), as an armed nucleus. Mandela was commander in chief of MK. On 14 June 1958 Nelson and Winnie Madikizela were married at a local Bizana church. They had two children, Zenani (1958) and Zindziswa (1960). In April1992theywereseparatedanddivorcedin1996. He left the country in 1962 and travelled abroad to arrange guerilla training for members of Umkhonto weSizwe. On his return to South Africa he was arrested for illegally exiting the country and incitement to strike. Mandela decided to represent himself in court. While on trial, Mandela was charged with sabotage in the Rivonia Trial. This is his famous statement from the dock made in 1964: “I have

fought against White domination, and I have fought against Black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Mandela and the other accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial and sent to Robben Island. “While in prison, Mandela rejected offers to be released on condition that he renounced violence. He served a total of 27 years in prison. Released on 11 February 1990, Mandela plunged wholeheartedly into his life’s work. In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held inside SA after being banned for decades, Mandela was elected President of the ANC while his lifelong friend, Oliver Tambo, be-

came the organisation’s National Chairperson. Nelson Mandela accepted the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with FW de Klerk) on behalf of all South Africans who suffered and sacrificed so much to bring peace to our land. The era of apartheid formally came to an end on April 27, 1994, when Nelson Mandela voted for the first time in his life – along with his people. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was inaugurated as President of a democratic South Africa on 10 May 1994. This world icon worked tirelessly even after the achievement of democracy in South Africa to continue improving lives. Even as he retired from politics, his attention shifted to social issues such as HIV and AIDs and the wellbeing of the nation’s children. Mr Mandela is survived by his wife Graça, three daughters and 18 grandchildren.

Madiba to be honoured with dignity and pride REPORTER Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet said in a statement over the weekend the performance and conduct of government as well as the conduct of people of the Eastern Cape during this period will have a significant bearing on public opinion in the country and beyond, and all activities are therefore material to our province reputation. “We must honour Madiba with dignity and pride. The official mourning period and the State Funeral is an opportunity for all South Africans and the international community to mourn the loss we all feel – and to celebrate Madiba’s extraordinary life and contribution to all of humanity,” said Kiviet.

“Let’s Work Together to make this period one in which we maintain the dignity and proud reputation of our country. “A great number of international visitors will make their way to our province to be part of memorial events and the State Funeral,” she said. Kiviet called on all people of the Eastern Cape to work with authorities to ensure that the dignity and security of key public events is maintained throughout this period. “As the province we have aligned our memorial events along the national programme and indeed as the Eastern Cape we are ready,”. Kiviet said that the province’s infrastructure is ready namely the roads, airports, public transport, stadia, electricity. Umtata Air-

port shall be exclusively utilised for landing of Heads of State only, while the two airports in PE and EL shall be open to the VIPs and public and VVIPs attending the funeral will be driven by luxury coaches to Qunu to avoid stampede in the N2. “Eskom has assured us that their Electricity network in the area has been maintained since September and contingency plans/ backup are in place in case of lapse. “Our economic network in the form of Banks, telecommunications, retail shops, media are ready to absorb the increased volumes this time. “Our hospitality sector is ready in terms of providing accommodation and tourism attraction led by Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency – a number of tourism informa-

tion centre kiosk have been mounted around the province to make it easier for tourists and mourners to navigate our beautiful province,” she said. “Our Safety and Security cluster is ready including SAPS police and Traffic Officers. This Team will be backed up by a team of 3000 marshals,” she said. Since other mourning activities and State funeral would not be accessible to everyone, the government have identified public viewing mourning areas (PVMA’s) where public can view footage from events. Some of the public viewing areas are: Rotary stadium; Open space below Qunu Museum; Mthatha Stadium; Khaya Majola Stadium; Empa Village next to Qunu; Nkalane village next to Qunu; Mvezo village; Holly Cross; Tsolo Junction.

‘I lost a friend in Madiba’ - Gebedwana SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE AN old man and a friend to Madiba during their heydays in Qunu expressed his agony after hearing the of his friend Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela. Kekana Gebedwana (92) besides being a friend to Tata (father in Xhosa) Nelson Mandela but they are also neighbours and during their glory days they used to spend time together and share some ideas and travel distances in a helicopter visiting different Kings in the Eastern Cape where they held meetings. It was after Mandela was released from prison. He said Mandela used to come to Qunu from Gauteng and send children to Gebedwana’s home to tell him that he should be ready because the following day they have a journey. Nelson Mandela the first black president in the democratic South Africa died in his home in Houghton, Gauteng last Thursday, after a long illness of lung infection. “I wish to die even myself because I’m also sick, so that I can rest. As Dalibhunga (Mandela) is gone I’m alone because he was the only person in this location whom I used to share our old issues. We started being sick

simultaneously and after that we never had time to stay together again. I used to hear that he was home here in Qunu but I was unable to visit him because I’m sick. I even heard that he was sick and he was flown back to Johannesburg but I had no power to visit him even myself because I was also sick. Even though it is painful to lose a man like him but God has rested his soul after his dedication in a fight against apartheid and he even surrendered his family and fought for the liberation of this country”, said the old man who is battling to hear properly. When the Fever arrived in his home not far from Mandela’s homestead the old man was watching the television set whilst the long walk to freedom of Nelson Mandela was being broadcasted on SABC channel. The agony was written on his face and he looked as if he was confused. What confused the old man, was though he heard that tata Mandela was no more but he was still seeing him addressing the audience onTV until the Fever team told him that those were the old recordings for Mandela. According to his grandson Phikolomzi, he was watching TV since 03h30 in the morning after he heard that Mandela was late. At Qunu it was quite and in all the homesteads

that Fever visited people were next to their television sets and radios listen attentively to the history of Mandela to achieve freedom in this country. The Fever also visited Gcitshane family not far from the school where Mandela did his primary education. It was reported that this family borrowed Mandela money to escape to exile. Nolusapho Zidlele from this homestead confirmed that Mandela was given money by her late mother in-law. She revealed that Mandela’s mother used to visit the family as they had local organizational meetings together with her mother-law. “I can say Mandela’s family was the close friend of my in-laws. We loved him and he must rest in peace as he played his role and changed the lives of many South Africans. Look now children are getting child support grants of which we never thought about,” she said. The Qunu resident Cingeyakhe Mahashe (42) also expressed his pain on the death of tata Mandela. “He was a great leader hoping that the present leadership will follow on his footsteps.” Soon after the announcement of Mandela’s death AbaThembu Traditional Leadership met to discuss the issue as a family in

Bumbane Great Place whilst there were prayers conducted throughout Mthatha for Mandela family to be strong.

State funeral for SA’s beloved Madiba Continued from page 1. According to Machaea, the East London, Mthatha and Bulembu Airports and the surrounding roads will be expected to be busy until after the funeral. South African Airways will operate a special air transport service to ferry mourners who will attend the funeral of world icon and former president Nelson Mandela in the Eastern Cape.

This special service – for which travellers will pay - will cater for mourners who will attend the funeral and the service will also be available on the return leg of their travel. The special service does not replace and will not disrupt SAA’s existing daily operations to the Eastern Cape – except that airspace will be restricted around Mthatha. Who is expected in SA this week:

On Sunday, 13 African states have confirmed attendance, in addition to 15 from outside the continent. International and regional organisations from the United Nations and European Commission to the African Union, for example, have also confirmed attendance. Minister Collins Chabane said on Sunday that eleven (11) eminent persons will also be in South Africa during this period. From the United States, President and

Mthatha Airport upgraded just in time AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA THE Mthatha community is relieved and happy that the government listened to them when they asked for the formerly dilapidated Mthatha airport to be revamped. The airport can now receive bigger planes due to the recently launched new runway and a revamped terminal section. Only Heads of State attending former president Nelson Mandela’s funeral will be allowed to land at the Mthatha airport, said Eastern Cape Premier, Noxolo Kiviet on Sunday. The rest of the guests had been advised to use East London and Port Elizabeth airports. According to the premier, VIPs attending the funeral will be driven by luxury coaches to Qunu to avoid a stampede on the N2. Mthatha Airport upgrade task team leader and a political analyist, Professor Somadoda Fike-

ni, together with several stakeholders from Mthatha, approached the provincial government to prioritise the facelift of the then KD Matanzima Airport in 2011. After several talks and engagements, the provincial Department of Transport came on board and the national department also made a commitment to make sure that the community’s anticipation was fulfilled. “We are really happy that the government listened to us and the efforts made by the Mthatha community have yielded positive results,” said Fikeni. Fikeni alse sent his condolences to Mandela’s family and friends during this sad time. “For his age, this was expected, but death is never easily accepted and we thank the Mandela family for allowing us an opportunity to witness such an extra-ordinary life.” He added that what is left for those left behind, is to mourn, honour, celebrate and to live up to his dreams.

He said he started drawing at a very young age, but never took it seriously until the accident, which made it hard for him to proceed with his studies and kept him home-bound. “I can no longer socialise with my friends like before, so I spend more time doing what I like most,” said Songezile. His dream is to become a police sketcher and also a car designer. According to him, he wouldn’t let his disability stand in his way.

Family awaits drowned son’s remains

AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA A Mqanduli family is still waiting for the body of their son to be found. It is believed that Sindisa Mavumengwana (30) from Upper Ngqwarha location in Mqanduli, drowned while he and a colleague were trying to rescue a woman swimming at the same beach in Port St John’s last week. Mavumengwana was last seen on November 17, while he was allegedly trying to rescue the unknown woman. Both he and his colleague drowned during their joint rescue attempt. Mavumengwana worked for Power Clothing in Mqanduli and he was one of the staff members who travelled from Mqanduli to Port St John’s for their end-of-year function. His family is in mourning after losing their son and their pain is worsened by the fact that

they have no body to lay to rest. Noxolile Mavumengwana (62), Sindisa’s mother, said this is the worst nightmare for her and the entire family. “Losing your son is one thing but not being able to bury him is very painful. We are still hoping that my son’s body will be recovered, said the mother. She said there were no plans yet for a memorial service and that they were focusing on having the body recovered. Family members have joined the search and rescue team, but with no positive results and they said they got discouraged when they were told that the search had been called off. According to them, the beach had no lifesavers on duty on the day of the drownings. At the time of going to print, SAPS spokesperson in Port St John’s, Captain Mduduzi Godlwana, said he had not yet received information about the incident.

Acting Municipal Manager in Port St John’s, Fundisile Guleni, said it was unfortunate indeed that there were no lifesavers on the beach on that day. “They usually start working around November 15, but this time around, there were delays with the finalization of their contracts. “However, as we now speak, all nine beaches in PSJ have visible lifesavers working round the clock, said Guleni. He further said that due to limited resources for searches, they had to wait at least seven days with the hope that the sea would eventually push the bodies out to shore.

Chance at business opportunities for jewellery designers NOMVUYO NTANJANA THE Deputy Minister for Tourism, Thokozile Xasa, recently said that business opportunities may come for a recently trained group of young jewellery designers. This comes after she sent 15 young South Africans from different provinces, on a sixmonth jewellery design course in Beijing, China earlier this year. The course was also part of a joint skills development programme between South Africa and a Chinese jewellery company, which taught the group how to manufacture, design and market jewellery. The department paid their flight tickets and health insurance, while the Chinese company covered their accommodation and gave them a monthly allowance. Seven out of the 15 young people were selected from Mthatha, and are still not employed regardless of the training they had. Responding to the Fever about whether the department had any proper job opportunities for the group, the deputy minister said the department was busy working with government entities and Skills Education Training Authorities in South Africa (SETA), looking and exploring their incubation programme. “But it’s not 100 percent guaranteed that they will all get what they hope for. It all depends on the company’s proposal or the qualifications required, she added. She also added that the programme’s role was not to give trainees jobs, but skills so that they could create and find jobs themselves. According to the department, the programme had been in existence for the past two years, and about 40 previously disadvantaged young people had benefited so far.

Do you know the reason why bethathelana? Thoba sikuxelele iindaba ezi ungazaziyo kuba apha eFeverland sikholo lo nto. Zininzi moss iziganeko ezibuyelelana nesi besinibalisele sona in our last edition. Since the story came out we were undated by calls from people raising their feelings about the guy who unexpectedly saw his girlfriend in his buddy’s room wrapping a towel in her waist. People were asking where they stand now? Kaloku sinixelele ukuba bohlukene emveni kokuba i-outie le imbone kwindlu yale ntshebe ibikwi group yethu and nayo ngoku intshebe le ithathele umfethu is running away from us because iyazi sizokuyigcwalisela ngokuthi idle apha esithebeni sethu isazi kakuhle ukuba lo nto izakudala iyantlukwano. Into ke edala yonke le nto yokuthathelana yile yofika umntu ebalisa ngomntu wakhe ukuba unjani

nomnye ke afune ukuya kuzivela that honey kubaliswa ngayo. Watch out! These things really happen, musa nje ukumqhelisela umntu xa ekubuza ngomntu wakho. Uzakumenza ntoni or ufuna ukuthini? This goes to the guys You remember in our last week gossip column we were telling the ladies about things which make them do flops in their relationships. Le nto yokuba umntu atshintshe amqhele umntu wakhe ngathi sishlobo sakhe no more hot pants instead golf shirts if not ordinary t-shirts, when she gets to bed. We are hoping that our ladies of the soil have taken our advice kungenjalo bazakushiywa boobhuti xa beqhubeka nobuxelegu babo. Do you know guys’ grand flop? Come closer so that we will tell you news ezi ungazaziyo. Namajita ayafloper kuba umntu if the relationship is still fresh she would act big and send lunch time and again from the expensive restaurants. And he would be active in every aspect of relationship like kissing if not say I love you every time. But when the time goes by he would

stop that ubona nje ukuba he is forcing himself in whatever he is doing. Whereas usisters has became used in such practice. Even if usisi ucela just a plate of meal from the caravan umjita uyakuvela etshona esithi akanamali ibe ikhona phofu imali mara akusafani nakuqala. Musani bafethu ukuqala izinto eningazukuzigqiba because nihlukumeza oosisi bethu. Lonke ixesha xa efika endlini ufika ubalisa ngokudinwa ufuna ukutya emveni koko alale thwii. Basop kulapho ke nifike nibethelwe khona because you are no longer entertaining your partners. So that is a grand flop emajiteni. They act big and eventually fail dismally. Money, car keys, expensive phone will never propose love Other things are amusing in life. What now? Kaloku we were going to bank our few cents which we earn from gossiping. Hey, there was a guy who was wearing a beret of EFF watsiba moss, this newly formed organization of Juju. OW! Likho itshamba kula outie. He was trying to call the lady who is working at the bank with the purpose of proposing

love the way ebesibona ngayo. But the lady refused even to give him her cell number. Nantso ke into enkulu ikhupha the keys zeMerc and a big phone ibingathi sisitena. Shame, mntwana still wangasabeli. Sahleka salala ke xa sele ikhupha imali yonke ebekucaca ukuba izakuyi - ‘banker’ iyibalela phambi kwalo mntwana still umntwana wanga responda wase wawinkela igossip team ebonakalisa ukuba dar man uhlisa amanqaku, kule ntwana ebesenayo. Shame uke uthi uyaseducer kanti ulahla impahla. Side samshiya ke esabala umfana omdala. Wow! What are you doing is dangerous Uyazi we normally hear that once the female decides to do something she does not give a damn about the consequences, she just becomes fearless. Ok, we are not saying all of them as we know ukuthi there are women who use their common sense before they do anything but some, hoo! Kubanjwa amazinyo. Here is a story kukhona le outie ibidumbe intloko yile-cherrie and shame ubona ukuba umntwana wabantu kuthi kwakufowuna lo sisi abengathi umqondo lo awubambi kahle. That’s the plight of loving someone; if you never experienced that obsession you are still a lucky person because it’s so painful. Even if you are trying to calm it down or to root it out, it doesn’t work because love is dominating. Ok, le outie really loved this woman as a result of respect for this woman if not stupidity he decided to dump the woman whom he was involved with. Kanti ulahla imbo yakhe ngophoyiyana. Ibithi le outie xa ifowuna yona ifuna ukuza kuye, ukuba akathandi ayikwazi ukuya, mara kwafowuna le-chick isithi iyayifuna iyakuvuka nokuba kukwesikabhadakazi, kuba iyabizwa. We don’t think it’s fair. Now the guy is clueless because he was told by this chick ukuthi yona inomntu wayo ofull time and she is employed by the same boyfriend even the room where she stays is rented by this boyfriend. Mind this guy used to sleep there or spend the entire weekend thinking nothing that there is a ‘real owner’ of this woman. Look at the danger that was hanging over him. Xa ebengafika nje lo mjita endlwini ekuhlala umntu wakhe, yena usisters ebengayicingi indyikitya yokufa ayivulayo. Inene unesibindi sister. But wubala lolo because there are married women who use their husbands’ beds with their secret lovers, but now at least the woman who is on the agenda is not married with this ‘owner’. Don’t play big whereas you are nothing Uyazi, dear readers kukhona these chaps in social life who play big but back where they stay they are very poor. You will find them drinking expensive whiskies if not driving fancy cars with very beautiful ladies who drink ciders as if they drink ordinary water. You will find that where they stay is ridiculous. They go to bed with fat-cookies and polony. In their fridges you will find half of a whiskey, plenty of beers and just ordinary water but no food. They only braai meat in tshisa nyamas around town and at their rooms there is poverty. Even if he wins from those drunken ladies they buy something to eat in town. Early in the morning they rush to the restaurant if not tshisa nyama for a breakfast. Akazi nokuba usisi lo uyakwazi ukupheka na because our worry is that it might happen ukuba kubekhona that click between them and ended up getting married. Our question is how can you marry another man? Because if a woman does not know how to prepare a breakfast for her man in the morning, she is like a man. What kind of a life is that? You know what? You must know your self and your background first before the world knows you. Recently we visited one of the guys whom we used to meet in these bumnandi places around UTA. You know the guy, today is driving Isuzu, tomorrow Audi on the other day BMW and you will never know which car he’s driving because he is not like Gossip team which always drives iTuru-turu everyday. Bezirhwayile siqonda ukuba sizakuba sesicanda kule-outie, instead le outie ivele yasikhiphela inyambalala yama-beer endaweni yokutya. Ok, kuba uGesh akaziqhati ngesisu sakhe wavula i-fridge ejonga ukuba ngeke afumane something to eat, nokuba yi-Vienna ekungenani. Wow! Uvele washaywa sis’squeeze esizele amanzi ne-empty le-Tomato sauce. Mara lo mjita indlela ankala ngayo kuma izikolo.

Choosing the winner: The next step in the process is a stringent two-day evaluation session to be held in Gauteng in January 2014. The evaluation days offer the Jury the opportunity of reacquainting themselves with the vehicles and specific aspects such as aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money, to name but a few. MP donates sport kit worth R40 000

NOMVUYO NTANJANA MEMBER of Parliament and South African National Civic Organization’s (SANCO) provincial convener, Zukile Luyenge, donated sports kit to the value of R40 000 to the Dlukulwana Junior Secondary School in Libode last week. Presenting the items, including a complete kit for two netball teams and two football clubs, the MP appealed to the audience to keep off the streets and to stay away from drugs and alcohol during the festive season. “There will be a lot of activity during this season, including the use of drugs, and crime committed by young people. Therefore we say, instead of confusing your mind, take part in sport and the fun will follow,” he said. The handover came in the wake of his 2010 world cup visit to the area. During that visit, he discovered that ninety percent of the homes in the village were child-headed households. “Hence I made it a priority to come up with an initiative that would help the situation,” he said. Adopting the school, he promised that with all the structures that he works with, including government departments and the private sector that support the intervention, they would put ‘special focus’ on the school. “We’ve already started the process. The department of Social Development has taken down the names of all households run by

children. Our intervention will start with their report,” he added. The MP also appealed to pupils to strive higher by combining their academic work with sport. “As pupils, your future depends on your results in school. Studies must be taken seriously,” he advised. The school’s headmaster, Kaya Kupelo, thanked the MP and said the donation was on time and had come as a relief. “Among other challenges, the school lacked sports equipment.”
