Traders to vacate land

nformal traders operating their businesses in containers and shacks in Mbizana town were furious after the municipality served them with notices last week Tuesday to vacate within seven days even though the matter was still pending in court. Spokesperson for the business operators, Zwelenkosi Ngidi, said last year they received a court order from the municipality who wanted to have them removed from the places where they are trading. Since that was their only livelihood they hired a lawyer to challenge the municipality in court. “I am surprised that the municipality is giving us letters to vacate while they know very well that the matter was still in court. It is against the law for the municipality to remove us from where we are, since it is clear in the constitution of this country that if a person had built in an area and was not removed within 24 hours, the person removing him or her must find an alternative place for that person.” He said after receiving the notices the traders were very angry and they wanted to go to the municipal offices to stage a sit-in and destroy whatever they could. He said he had, however, managed to calm them down. The lawyer representing the traders, Lindile Qhina, said after receiving a call from his clients he wrote a letter to the municipality asking them to stop harassing these people since the case was in court. He said the case would have been finalized by now if the municipality’s lawyer was attending but every time when they go to court, there was no-one from the municipality. “The interim order that was granted by the court to the municipality to evict the traders had lapsed. It is only the court interdict that we launched which is still pending in court and if the municipality attends that can be finalized,” said Qhina. Express contacted the office of the Mbizana Municipal Manager, Luvuyo Mahlaka, for comment. The person who answered the phone wanted to know what the call was about and it was explained to her that a comment was needed from the manager regarding the notices given to the traders. She said the manager was busy on another call and took the Express reporter’s contact details, but at the time of going to press he had not returned the call.

Advocates to represent Plangweni victims REPORTER ADVOCATES known for their work during the Farlam Commission will defend the socalled Plangweni Eight who were arrested after the looting of an overturned truck led to the death of two people when police opened fire. At least 13 people were injured after Mzamba police opened fire with live ammunition on the crowd, who were allegedly looting the truck on the R61 outside Mbizana on December 2 last

year. The eight suspects, which were arrested for theft and attacking the police, appeared briefly in the Mbizana Magistrates Court without the advocates and their case was remanded to February 23. According to reports, the advocates will also be representing the two people who died during the shootout – a woman (32) and a man (19). Renowned advocates from the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, Dali Mpofu, backed by Richard Spoor’s office and Matthew Chas-

kalson, have decided to defend the accused and demand compensation for damages to the victims. The shooting with pump guns and 9mm ammunition against a crowd of community members took place at about 8 am in the morning. The incident happened after a truck carrying a cargo of rice, sugar and beans stalled and rolled backwards uncontrollably after trying to pass a long slope on the R61. The cargo fell on the road side.

Eight community members were arrested by the Mzamba police and charged with theft and attacking the police after they started looting the cargo on the side of the road. Among the accused is an 82 year-old woman who was shot first. She was hit by two pump gun bullets in her forehead when allegedly watching the event from afar. Another accused is the mother of an 8 year old boy who was allegedly sitting under a tree when the child was hit by a stray bullet in the leg.

Petrol price could drop by R1 REPORTER THE petrol price is falling so quickly that a further reduction of R1 may be on the cards, according to economist Mike Schüssler of economists.co.za.

OMBUDSMAN

“About two weeks ago I thought it would drop another 25 cents, then about a week ago it looked like it would be a 50 cents’ drop. Now it is looking like a rand decline could become true,” he said. “That would be the second R1 decline and would bring the whole reduction to over R4 or a saving of R580 per month for the average motorist.” This will again boost consumer spending on other products and services, in his

view. “Notice how empty shops were just after Christmas as products sold more than expected. This would be close to 6% of formal sector disposable salaries - that is takehome pay after taxes and pensions, using BankservAfrica data,” he explained. “Consumers will take this as another good sign and if it were not for the power outages, I would estimate that this would have boosted the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2% to 2.5% by now. That is if it lasted for the whole year, of course.” The BankServAfrica Disposable Salary Index shows that typical disposable salaries are still just under R10 000 per month and the average just over R12 000. In his view what is now needed is to “get

Another factor to note, he pointed out, is that Coface believes the current Brent price to be an overreaction due to weakening demand from the US. “We are further predicting the price to normalise around the $75 mark in the latter part of 2015,” he said. “Overall, consumers should be getting some relief in the form on a fuel price cut locally, but consumer confidence is still very low and we should not expect this to immediately translate into an increase in retail spend.” In his view most consumers will be wary of a petrol price hike later in the year and cautious activity could definitely be expected.

Eskom going and get all politics out” of the power utility. Saijil Singh, lead analyst of Coface, the international credit insurer, says their projections indicate another drop in petrol price is definitely on the cards, and a 50c reduction is a strong likelihood. “There are various factors to consider here and the prevalent one is definitely the drop in oil price. We must be careful, however, to not ignore the reality of a very weak rand and gains in a dollar-based commodity are not directly translated locally,” he warned. “Simply put, while the oil price has come down by more than 50% in the last six months, it does not mean that consumers will see a 50% fuel price reduction locally.”

Diploma in Animal Health launched

3

AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA EASTERN Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, together with Premier Phumulo Masuale, reopened the Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI) last Thursday in Tsolo. Also part of the event was Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Senzeni Zokwana, and Rural Development and Land Reform Deputy Minister, Mcebisi Sikwatsha. Qoboshiyane said the re-opening launches the three-year agricultural diploma that will start off with the dipping and castration of livestock. “TARDI has been processing student applications from interested students, some of whom have since been admitted to study at the Institute,” said MEC. He said that the diploma will equip all provincial animal health practitioners with professional knowledge to help curb livestock parasites, control state controlled diseases, and provide veterinary extension and advisory services to communities. “Owing to the cases of rabies and other animal diseases prevalent in their areas, the first group of students hails from Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo district municipalities.” The MEC highlighted that quality animal healthcare was critically important to the economy of the province because agriculture was one of its main economic drivers, and a major contributor to its domestic product. The first group of 30 students had been accredited by the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) to study a bridge course for 18 months, considering their accredited diploma in animal production. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also handed over a veterinary clinic to the Institute.

Business owners are living in fear

GREG NOTA BUSINESS owners, many of whom are foreign nationals, are living in fear following a spate of armed robberies last week Tuesday and Wednesday. One foreign national business owner, who did not want to have his name published fearing for his safety, said the incidents of last week have left them all with the question of “who will be the next victim?”

“These armed robbers are aware that we sleep in our business premises that we rent from the locals. They attack when they know that most of the people are sleeping and no one will identify them. We wish that community members from the areas where we rent businesses will assist us in identifying these culprits and isolate them from society,” he said. According to him the community need them the same way they need their support in buying from their shops. They are bringing groceries closer to the people as they don’t need to

travel to town saving on transport money. Provincial Police spokesperson Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni confirmed the armed robberies that took place in three areas of Bizana and an assault at the Greenville area. He said on Tuesday, January 20 a case of an alleged business robbery in Ngcingwane locality was reported and Bizana police are investigating. “A case of robbery was also reported and is currently under investigation after an incident that happened at Khaleni locality also

on Tuesday. At time of going to print no suspects had yet been arrested. There was also a report of another business robbery and assault in the Greenville area on Wednesday,” said Lt Tonjeni. He said a Somali (33) man was assaulted on the scene. Despite rumours that someone had died at the scene, according to Lt Tonjeni no one died during this incident. No one has yet been arrested and police are investigating.

Teaching starts on day one GREG NOTA TEACHERS have heeded the call by the Department of Education and started teaching on the first day of the new academic year. To ensure that this was in fact the case and that schools were ready for the year, the Eastern Cape Department of Education Portfolio Committee chairperson Kholiswa Fihlani, committee members and leaders from political parties visited several schools in the sub districts of Lusikisiki and Flagstaff.

According to the Acting District Manager, Thozamile Binase, some of the schools they visited did experience a few hiccups which were resolved. The schools that they visited were Nomzamo Junior Secondary School (JSS), Thembukazi JSS, Meyisi Senior Secondary School (SSS), Mgezwa SSS, Hillbrow SSS, Jiba SSS and Botha Sigcau SSS. Binase said some of the challenges that they came across at these school were shortage of desks, school bags not being delivered in time and problems with the infrastruc-

ture. “At Jiba SSS there was a problem whereby parents had chased away the principal but that was resolved and the principal is back at the school. “Nomzamo JSS and Hillbrow SSS had a major problem of infrastructure which caused overcrowding in the classrooms but fortunately for those two schools they have been earmarked for construction,” said Binase. He said at most of the schools that they visited, teachers and learners were ready to start working as learners were in classrooms on the first and second day and in some cases there were only a few learners that still needed to be admitted.

Mount Frere schools get big boost from bank REPORTER OVER 200 children from Ngwekazi Senior Secondary and Barkerville Primary School in Mount Frere received uniforms, shoes, stationery and soccer kit from Nedbank as part of its Back to School Campaign. Mobile libraries and labs were also donated to the schools. Initiated in 2010, the campaign, which forms part of Nedbank’s holistic education programme called Fundisa, had invested over R11 million for more than 10 000 learners’ uniforms, shoes and stationery. One of the beneficiaries, Mzuxolo Gagashe, a matriculant from Ngwekazi Senior Secondary School said; “The school uniform, shoes and stationery I received will enable me to focus more on my studies while the mobile library and labs will help me and fellow learners to prepare better for matric exams.” Nedbank’s Fundisa programme aims to build effective schools through infrastructure development, teacher training, building leadership capacity and providing classroom-based support. The bank had also been contributing to the improvement of education outcomes for learners in Grade 9 to 12 through its career guidance programme “My Future My Career” and the Matric Revision Programme, which forms part of Fundisa. “We partner with government, civil society and communities to contribute to the goals of the National Development Plan. Education is a key Corporate Social Investment (CSI) focus area for Nedbank as it contributes towards a strong and flourishing knowledge-based economy,” said Kone Gugushe, Divisional Executive for CSI at Nedbank. “We believe that investing in children will create a better society for all of us.” The bank encourages all people in South Africa to contribute towards the campaign by smsing the word ‘school’ to 40017 to donate towards stationery, uniforms and shoes.

There’s light at end of tunnel YOU know what, when you see someone who looks like he or she is seized by alcohol or by the wrong act on this world, don’t throw in the towel with that particular person. It’s just that God is still paving his or her way if not moulding his or her pot. There are people out there who were regarded as useless people but later on you see such people again moving forward in life, their appearance changed. We had the astonishment of our lives recently when we met a lady who used to be out there drinking as if there was no tomorrow. She had a professional Phuza Face, because wayengathi ulala khona avukele kubo. Now the lady is a decent woman and she is married to a very handsome guy who met her in these mnandi places. Uyabona ke ukuba kuyabhaqeka nakwezi ndawo nangona nje abaninzi bengazi thandi ncam. Jonga ngoku u-sisters ufumene umyeni. Inene umntu xa engakafumani umntu wakhe kuye kungathi akasoze amfumane and abeyinto nje nawe ozixelela ukuba soze itshintshe. Siyakubulelela wethu ntombi, uwugcine umendo wakho kuba unqabile and ke kuthiwa

emendweni kuyanyamezelwa. Obviously, uyivile intlupheko yaphaya etywaleni nekulapho uzibona sele unendoda ekumark (leyo) nokuba ubungafuni ndoda umoshe nje ngokusela utywala bayo ekuthengileyo. Asidingi kwazi imbali yenu Bafethu everybody on this Express land has his or her own secrets which we don’t want to hear about. Kusikhathaze kakhulu okuthethwe ngomnye umjita kwi-vrou yomnye umjita nekucaca ukuba babehambisa ngexesha lobutsha babo mara ngoku akuthethi ukuthi makahambe esima ngaye apha ebantwini ukuba wayenjani ngelixa babesathandana. Lo nto leyo mfethu ibifuna wena nentliziyo yakho ungabe uhamba uthetha nge-vrou yenye i-outie. Even nalo wakho zikhona izinto owazenzayo namanye amadoda ebuntombini bakhe mara abahambi bethetha ngaye; loo nto yaziwa babo neentliziyo zabo. Uvile ke boet? Asiyithandanga daai ding. Danger of faking God You can blind us on this Express land but you will never blind God.

Why boys? It’s just that there are people who act in front of our eyes as if they are living pure lives but behind the scenes they are Satan uqobo lwakhe. You can even blind the people on this land by wearing a nice church uniform if not a suit and carry a very advanced Bible, but if ukholo is not in your heart or if it is not a calling you are just playing and God will reveal that. Okay, here is a story. There was a guy whom we used to stay with at Khwezi Township in UTA some couple of years ago. Actually he was a yard-mate. The guy claimed that he was saved and he prayed about half of the night even in the middle of the night. Okay, we had no problem with that even though his action was a bit tormenting to us because he was always disturbing us in our slumber. But ke nothing esasingayenza the guy had accepted the calling and ethetha nenkosi yakhe. Every weekend he was not in UTA, stating

that he was going to spread the word of God in other places particularly Idutywa. Okay son of God. You remember we said God will reveal if your ways are not as we see when you are in front of us. In January we met the man again pushing the word of God very strong in UTA. As you know we travel a lot and sithanda ubumnandi. We took a journey to Idutywa and it is where he used to visit stating that he had lot of followers there. OW! Siya eclubini ke thina xa sifika endaweni nekulapho sifumana khona iindaba. Sihleli sibetha okuncane wangena in this club u-pastor as we normally call him. He was with beauties of the soil in jeans and miniskirts and he looked like sefikile apha kwinyembezi zikaVictoria kuba ebesethethela phezulu ephatha kunqabula aphinde aphathe izinqa zaba sisi. Wadlala pastor! We asked the lady who was next to us ukuba liyamazi na. Lavele lasikhathalisa, xa lisithi sisinxila salapha esi, qha sihlala eMthatha.

Gospel star wants to motivate others AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA YOUNG Gospel sensation, Yongama Mrwetyana (19), is spreading his wings and the word of God, not only through his music being played by local community radio stations, but also through his motivational talks. Mrwetyana is giving these talks on UCR, Khanya, Inkonjane, Vukani and Alfred Nzo community radio stations. He is also currently working on his new social show at Bay TV which will be aired around March this year. “I want to live a life that will be a motivation to many, especially for those in my age group,” said Mrwetyana. He said he wants young people to know that whatever they want to achieve in life is possible with faith in God.

“I am now a Gospel artist and that has always been my dream,” he said. He said he loves working in radio but not more than singing Gospel and worshipping God through music. “I love radio and I have big plans of growing in it, but my music career comes first. I live it and it is my ministry.” Mrwetyana is currently busy with the in-store distribution of his two albums (“Undithandile” and “Ebenezer”) and said that sales of both albums are doing well. He is also going back to school this year to finish his Matric at Holy Cross High School. By doing this he is also hoping to motivate other young people to put education first. “Education is very important. As an artist you need to sign contracts and before you can do that you must be able to to read and understand what is written.”

Butterworth United punishes its neighbours ANELE RAZIYA BUTTERWORTH United FC punished their neighbours Green Lovers FC with five goals to zero during their SAB Regional League game. The match was played in hot weather conditions at Msobomvu Sports ground last Saturday. After their humiliating defeat to the visitors, Green Lovers coach Golden Nguqu said they played very well but their goalkeeper made some mistakes which resulted in them having to pay the price. “I really don’t know what went wrong with our goalkeeper today because he used to make great saves and he is a good goalkeeper. “But today he conceded three unnecessary goals. We did not deserve to lose the game because we created a lot of chances but unfortunately we could not manage to convert

those opportunities into goals,” said Nguqu. He added that they started the game with young players in order to test them and givethem a chance. He urged community members to support soccer and to come in numbers to the grounds to watch the games as this would encourage the young players a lot. Butterworth united FC boss Mzwamadoda Sinyanya said his team maintained their game plan which was 4-3-3. They used highly skilled strikers upfront with the aim of scoring goals and they were equal to the task. “Before the match we told our midfielders to pass the ball quickly to the strikers so that we could outrun Green Lovers’ defenders and punish them, and they did exactly what we told them.” He said he was happy with a win but was disappointed with the turnout at the stadium. He said he would like to see people supporting the games and coming in numbers to the stadium.
