MTCBSA - Jet Trails Fall 2021 - Volume 31 Issue 2

Dear Scouting Family, Our 2021 Middle Tennessee Council Summer Camp programs at Boxwell and Latimer Reservations were fantastic and very well attended. In addition, hundreds of Scouts attended Grimes Canoe Base and Parrish Reservation for individual troop adventures. The energy, enthusiasm and the discovery of adventure and new skills was evident in the Scouts. It was great to “escape the indoors” and be back at camp. The new Skilled Trades Program at Boxwell was a huge hit with over 250 Scouts taking skilled trades merit badges like welding, home repair, automotive maintenance, and plumbing. The look on a Scout’s face when he or she learns how to weld is priceless. We will be breaking ground soon on the new Skilled Trades Center at Boxwell and provide a facility that is dedicated to these merit badges and skills. If you have a chance, click on this link https://22b07f6a-828e-45a6-bc4a-a0cebce3694e.filesusr.com/ugd/219c7b_ e9ae11b84dc54ef583c801638ac5c81f.pdf to see a list of merit badges offered at Boxwell Reservation. We haven’t done an “official” comparison, but we feel certain that there are very few camps nationwide that offer such diverse selection of merit badges for Scouts to earn. Our goal is to provide the #1 summer camp experience for Scouts nationwide. We are well on our way. As you have heard, the BSA Chapter 11 Bankruptcy has loomed over us for more than a year, but it seems that BSA will be exiting the bankruptcy at year end 2021 or early in 2022. At the time of this letter there are still a few issues the BSA is working to resolve, but the outcome looks promising. The Middle Tennessee Council is committed to the continued support of our local Scouting programs and we don’t expect there to be any disruption in services and programs offered to our Scouts due to the BSA Bankruptcy. Many Scout Councils are adding an additional program fee for each Scout, in addition to the yearly BSA registration fee (none of the BSA registration fee stays local) to help offset costs for their Council. The Middle Tennessee Council does not plan to add this additional program fee. We want all Middle Tennessee youth to have the opportunity to be a Scout no matter their financial ability to participate. In fact, we are adding additional funds to help provide specific assistance (scholarships) for Scouts who can’t afford to be a part of this great program. With the challenges our young people face in these uncertain times, we know that Scouting provides an opportunity for outdoor adventure, a positive peer group, service, leadership training, a sense of accomplishment, and much needed skills that will last a lifetime. We want to thank all the dedicated Scout leaders who mentor and work tirelessly with the Scouts to ensure the Scouting mission of “teaching young people to make ethical and moral choices of their lifetimes, by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law” is being achieved.

NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experiences that they can use in their home troop, crew, or ship and in other situations demanding quality leadership. This training integrates the best of modern leadership theory with Scouting. Through activities, presentations, challenges, and discussions, NYLT participants are engaged in a unified approach to leadership. Using a wide range of activities events, games, and adventures. Our 2021 courses were a huge success with 70 Scouts completing the course. Course # 1 was under the direction of Rick Di Silvio, Course Director; Pete Palmieri, Virginia Mayfield and Andy Verble serving as Assistant Course Directors. The Senior Patrol Leader was Dalton Phillips who was supported by nine other outstanding youth staff. Course # 2 was led by Michael Moore, Course Director; Liz Worthington, Jim Button and David Petenzi serving as Assistant Course Directors. The Senior Patrol Leader was Jacob Dubois who was supported by nine other outstanding youth staff.

We are seeking nominations to be considered for “Scout of the Year”. Please vist our website at https://www.mtcbsa.org/scout-of-theyear to nominate a Scout that has demonstrated exceptional Scout spirit, leadership, heroism, community service or citizenship, either in his/her Scout unit or personal life. We will select one Cub Scout, one Scouts BSA, one Venturing Youth, one STEM Scout and one Sea Scout/Explorer to represent the Council. Each youth must be registered in a pack, troop, crew, lab, ship or post within the Middle Tennessee Council at the time of nomination. Should you wish to nominate more than one Scout, please complete a separate entry by October 8, 2021. The Scouts of the Year will be featured throughout the entire 2022 Scouting year, including a video showcasing their accomplishments. These Scouts will be recognized at the annual Patron Luncheon on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 before an audience of 1,000 community and civic leaders, and they will also be presented in Jet Trails magazine, Scout Shorts on-line, and other MTCBSA publications

Middle Tennessee Council Scouts are “escaping the inddors”! The event was a huge success as we had over 925 attend our first ever 100th Anniversary Council Camporee at Boxwell Reservation. This Scouts BSA Program offered Scouts to get back in to Scouting by going camping and participating in the Viking Warrior Challenge. Scouts got to test their skills in Tug of War, Pully four square, Hammer throw, Catapult, an Obstacle course, Climbing, Rappelling, Tomahawks, Archery, and a Viking Canoe race. Scouts then ended their day with an exciting Campfire where scouts earned awards, performed skits, and listened to a concert. Everyone in attendance had a blast. Thank you to all the staff that put in their time and hard work to make this huge event a big success for the Middle Tennessee Council and the Scouting Program.

We had ten exciting day camps this summer that resulted in 499 youth being able to shoot bows and arrows, bb guns, play sports and games, explore nature and make crafts. We also recognized and thanked some of our community super heroes for their service as we had medical, law enforcement, and fire services who visited camps to share their stories and details about their careers . We are pleased to say that all day camps were accredited in 2021!

Cub Scouts and Families were out and about at Boxwell Reservation this year, we had 413 Cub Scouts attend Cubworld and had an amazing time. Cub Scouts got to play on the Fort, Castle, 2 Pirate ships, American Indian Village, bb shooting, archery, fishing, canoeing, boating, swimming, and looking for Cubbimons. Scouts and Families got to experience a safe and fun program in a year that had so many obstacles. We would like to thank the Staff and leadership that provided this program for our Cub Scout Families. We look forward to growing our program and making everlasting memories for your families at Cubworld and Boxwell Reservation see you all at camp in 2022.

Scouting was back in full swing this summer at Boxwell Reservation as we celebrated our centennial year. This year we had 1,916 youth participated at camp and despite all the challenges accrued in the 2020 and 2021 year we were still able to offer a safe and exciting program for our youth. Scouts had over 77 merit badges and programs to choose from at camp this year and youth took 7,185 classes this summer. This year we kicked off 4 new programs like ATVs, Muzzleloading, Advance Sailing, and a Skilled Trades program that offered 9 merit badges (welding, automotive maintenance, painting, plumbing, electricity, home repairs, architecture, American labor, and American business). Thank you to all the Staff, Scoutmasters, leaders, and parents that took the time and dedication to make this year a success. Boxwell is continuing to grow and create a great and enjoyable summer camp program for our youth in the Middle Tennessee Council. We look forward to seeing you all in 2022 as we continue the legacy of Boxwell Reservation.

The Middle Tennessee Council 2021 Philmont Contingent was well represented by St. Henry Scouts BSA Troop 6, as Troop 6 made up the entire contingent. In addition, their Philmont Ranger, Colin Klich, is also a Troop 6 member. Lead Adviser, Bill Schlueter, who completed his thirteenth trek to Philmont, said Trek 22 was one of the most challenging treks, as the majority was bushwacking north of Philmont in the Valle Vidal portion of the Carson National Forest. It was fun, strenuous, hot, cold, wet, dry, with awesome views…everything one could want in a backpacking adventure at Philmont.

Scouts and leaders who attended summer camp 2021 were the first to use brand new shower houses that were a priority project of the Campaign for Boxwell Reservation. That might not sound exciting, but when you are in the woods during Tennessee’s hot and humid weather, a good shower is a blessing (for you and those around you!) Three new shower houses were completed, one in Camp Craig and two in Camp Stahlman. Three more are in the planning stages. Due to Covid related issues, such as the increase in the cost of lumber, several projects that were planned for 2021 summer completion were delayed. One of them was the new Skilled Trades Center that will now break ground this fall. It will be up and running and ready to provide merit badge classes in electricity, welding, home improvement, automobile maintenance, plumbing, painting, American Labor, American Law and Architecture during summer camp 2022. The new gateway honoring our veterans was also delayed as a new design is being completed to keep costs in line with our budget. Work has already begun at the site and the project will also be completed before summer camp 2022. As of July 23, 2021, the Campaign for Boxwell Reservation has secured $6,626,076, in pledges with 72% of that total already received. We look forward to completing our fundraising before the close of 2022. For more information about the campaign, please contact Larry Brown, Scout Executive, at lbrown@mtcbsa.org.

Heritage Society Recognizes Endowment and Planned Giving Supporters The Middle Tennessee Council Endowment Fund provides a stable, permanent source of income. Gifts to the endowment are invested over the long-term and earnings are used to support council operations. All funds remain in the Council and are restricted for its use. All Memorial Gifts and Planned Gifts received are added to the endowment. The Heritage Society was established to recognize supporters who make a $25,000 or greater outright gift or a $100,000 or greater planned gift to Endowment Fund. Outright gifts can be paid over a five-year period. The James E. West Society recognizes supporters who make outright gifts of $1,000 to $24,999 to the Endowment Fund. Planned Giving Planned giving provides a number of ways for you to include charitable giving in your total financial plan. Planned giving can provide significant tax benefits. All planned gifts designated to the Middle Tennessee Council benefit the Council’s endowment fund. Tax advantages can often make it possible for you to provide a greater gift than you thought possible, while also benefiting your family and heirs. Many donors and supporters of Scouting have chosen planned giving as a way to show their interest in supporting Scouting beyond their lifetimes, while realizing some tax benefits today. You can find more information about endowment and planned giving on the Council’s website here https://www.mtcbsa.org/generosity Contact Us Should you have questions or need additional information about supporting the Middle Tennessee Endowment Fund, please contact Zach Ross, Director of Development at zross@mtcbsa.org or 615-463-6288 or Linda Carter, Assoc. Director of Development at lcarter@mtcbsa. org or 615-463-6335.
