Dear Middle Tennessee Council Scouters and Investors:

We hope each of you had a fantastic summer and you are off to a good start with school and/or other fall activities. Our Middle Tennessee Council summer camp programs at Boxwell and Latimer Reservations were very successful. Attendance at Cub World summer camp was up 32% from last year and Scouts BSA summer camp at Boxwell was up over 8%. Latimer Reservation has camped over 1,800 Scouts and guests so far this year. Grimes Canoe Base and Parish Reservation have also had over 1,500 Scouts attend programs at these unique camps. In addition to our Middle Tennessee Council camping facilities, we had Middle Tennessee Council Scouts attend the National Jamboree, Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier Canoe Base and Sea Base. It has been a very busy summer.

This was the inaugural summer for teaching skilled trades merit badges at the brand-new Roy Grindstaff Skilled Trades Center. We believe this is the only free-standing skilled trades building for Scouts in the entire country. Merit badges such as Automotive Maintenance, Plumbing, Architecture, Painting, Home Repair, Welding and Electricity are all taught in or around this wonderful new facility.

We have started our fall recruitment for new Scouts and families and our early results look very promising. Families see the values, leadership, service, self-confidence, and positive mental health attributes that Scouting programs develop in their children. We are blessed to have over 6,000 registered adult volunteer leaders who invest their time, talent, and treasure to make a positive difference in the lives of over 13,000 Scouts. We are so very grateful to each of you.

The Middle Tennessee Council volunteers and staff work diligently to make our Scouting programs the best in the country, and we look forward to a bright Scouting future and serving even more young people in the future.

Yours in Scouting,

Dr. John Bright Cage Council President Karen Bengtson Council Commissioner Larry Brown Scout Executive

A Note from the Campaign Chair

Dear Scouting leaders, investors and friends:

We have much to be excited about at this time in our Council’s history! As the BSA National bankruptcy has concluded, the Middle Tennessee Council’s Campaign for Boxwell Reservation has restarted. Most of the priority projects for the campaign have been completed and we are especially proud of the new Roy Grindstaff Skilled Trades Center that opened to Scouts at summer camp. More than 350 Scouts BSA took hands-on classes in automotive maintenance, electricity, home repair, painting, plumbing and welding, as well as earning merit badges in American Business and architecture in a classroom setting. The building is located in Camp Parnell, just down the hill from the STEM Center. Having access to these facilities makes it possible for Scouts to earn merit badges that may not have been possible for them to do on their own. We look forward to having a grand opening celebration for the Skilled Trades Center on October 12th at 5:00 p.m. at Boxwell.

Boxwell Reservation also makes it possible for youth to have life-changing experiences. Troop 608, a new Scouts BSA troop in the East Nashville area has been growing tremendously in recent months. The youth in the troop had no experience hiking, camping or even leaving the city and this year they were able to do those things and more. They began small, doing a geocaching treasure hunt in downtown Nashville. This led them to get out of their comfort zone and spend an entire week at overnight camp at Boxwell. These Scouts are growing right before their parents’ and Scout leaders’ eyes, gaining skills and self-confidence along the way.

As of August 15, 2023, almost $7.2 million has been raised toward the $15 million goal. For more information about the Campaign for Boxwell Reservation please contact Linda Carter, Assoc. Development Director, at lcarter@mtcbsa.org.

It’s wonderful to hear about the fantastic success of Family Scouting at Cubworld with the Minion theme! The event truly offered a wide array of enjoyable and engaging activities for Cub Scouts and their families. From meeting beloved characters like Gru, Bob, Kevin, and Boxxy to participating in various fun-filled endeavors such as making pet rock Minions, face painting, dunking booth, kickball, gaga ball, Shooting BB and arrows, and sling shots. Cub Scouts got to explore the castle, fort, and pirate ships – as it’s clear that all families had an incredible time.

The significant increase in attendance, with 535 Cub Scouts this year, is a testament to the event’s popularity and impact. It’s heartwarming to see families coming together and creating lasting memories in such a positive and enriching environment.

A big shoutout and thank you to the 32 staff members and 20 Professional Scouters who dedicated their time and effort to make this camp a resounding success. Their support, dedication, and passion are instrumental in creating meaningful experiences for the Cub Scouts and their families.

The Middle Tennessee Council is looking ahead and want to announcement next year’s theme – “Family Scouting at Cubworld will launch into SPACE” – sounds incredibly exciting! The anticipation of exploring space and engaging in an out-of-this-world adventure is sure to capture the imagination of Cub Scouts and families alike.

Congratulations to everyone involved for organizing such an impactful and memorable event. Your commitment to providing a fun and enriching program for Cub Scouts and their families is truly commendable. Here’s to another fantastic year of Family Scouting at Cubworld! Make sure to plan your summer with your family and Pack for Boxwell next year!

This summer, 448 Scouts had a blast at the 2023 Adventure Camp Off to the Races! Our Scouts enjoyed a variety of activities, including shooting sports and building their own racecars. It was great to see so many Scouts earning requirements over the summer break while having fun.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our dedicated directors who worked tirelessly to plan and run these camps. We can’t wait to see what adventures await our Scouts in the future!

We are thrilled to announce the tremendous success of our Scouts BSA summer camp, with over 1,776 youth participants. We want to express our gratitude to all the participants for making this summer truly unforgettable. Week after week, we had the pleasure of witnessing young Scouts come together, create lasting memories, and grow both individually and collectively. It is through your enthusiasm and dedication that we were able to provide an enriching and rewarding experience for everyone involved. We look forward to continuing this journey with you and creating even more incredible memories in the future. Thank you for being a part of our success!

We had a great Winter Camp at Boxwell Reservation hosted by the Wa-Ha-Nasa Lodge and our youth leader Ella Burk. Ella put on a phenomenal program for our Scouts here in the Middle Tennessee Council and had an awesome staff. We had over 700 people in attendance for Sky’s the Limit as Scouts got to learn avation, space exploration, horsemanship, all three citizenships, farm mechanics and more. Scouts got to shoot archery, rifle, shot gun, cowboy action and muzzleloading. Scouts went rappelling, climbing, zipline, fly drones, play gaga ball and more.

We look forward to seeing your troop here at Boxwell Winter Camp in 2023. The dates are Dec. 27-30.

Camp Staff Opportunities Need a summer job?

Are you looking for a summer job where you can have fun, make new friends, and make a positive impact on the future of our youth? Look no further than Boxwell Summer Camp! Our camp is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team of the BEST STAFF in the Nation. As a member of our staff, you’ll have the opportunity to work with and mentor campers, develop new skills, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to be a part of our amazing team at Boxwell Summer Camp!

Memorial Day Flag Placement was a great success across the Middle Tennessee Council. As a Council, we had over 2,100 participants! These participants included Scouting youth, registered adult leaders, grandparents, and even businesses such as Oracle, Tractor Supply, Dollar General, and Amazon. They all came out and showed their support and placed over 60,000 flags all throughout the area. The largest Veteran Cemetery, Nashville National Cemetery, where over 36,000 soldiers and family members are buried, had over 1,000 participants show up bright and early at 8am to start placing flags and honoring those true heroes. We helped, supported, and placed flags on numerous other cemeteries such as the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery and Stones River National Cemetery to name a few.

Each year, we are continually growing our numbers and participants who come out and honor and support our fallen. Last year we had just over 1,800 proud participants and we are hoping to have over 2,500 participants for 2024. We appreciate and thank everyone for coming out and honoring those who served on a great, but solemn, day.

The patches will be ready in the fall. Thank you so much.

Nashville Sounds Scout Night

Our Scouts and their families had a blast out at the Nashville Sounds Stadium on July 22, 2023! With over 800 youth and adults participating, it was an incredible night filled with excitement and camaraderie. The highlight of the event was a parade around the field, followed by a thrilling game that went into extra innings. To top it off, everyone had the unique opportunity to sleep overnight on the field, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Each Scout received their own special patch to commemorate the event. We are grateful for the overwhelming response and look forward to welcoming even more youth and adults next year!

Drone Camp

Our STEM Program had a great weekend out at Boxwell Reservation and made so many memories flying, building, and coding their drones!

The youth were able to fully build a drone from scratch, use code to fly and direct their drone, and finally, fly their drone through windows and doors! We had 2 schools and over 30 youth participate in weekend filled with camp fires, hikes, and drones.

A Day of Clay Shooting Excellence

The clay shoot event, held against the backdrop of the stunning Middle Tennessee landscape, attracted both seasoned marksmen and novices eager to test their mettle. With a blend of friendly rivalry and a strong spirit of sportsmanship, participants engaged in a series of clay pigeon shooting challenges that tested their accuracy, timing, and concentration. Safety, of course, was paramount, with trained instructors and safety protocols ensuring that the event was both enjoyable and secure.

Scouting Values in Action

What set this clay shoot event apart was the way it seamlessly integrated the timeless values of Scouting into the competitive atmosphere. Throughout the day, Scouts and Shooters embodied the principles of respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness, fostering an environment where participants felt a strong sense of camaraderie. Demonstrating their commitment to leaving no trace, the Scouts and Shooters ensured the shooting range was left in pristine condition, a reflection of their dedication to conservation and stewardship of the environment.

Conclusion
