OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark The early history of faith fascinates all of us who find our meaning in the Lord Jesus. We’ve been following the heroics of Peter and Paul in the Acts of the Apostles (1st reading) and reveling in the immediate success of their efforts and the fast growth of Christians in the first century after Christ. It isn’t easy or simple for they suffer much and, eventually, every last one will die for the faith. It’s difficult for us to enter into their lifestyle, much less their mindset: Martyrdom was seen as inevitable for many who embraced Jesus while living in cultures and religions which sought to stamp out what they viewed as a dangerous threat and scourge. Much of this is why John wrote Revelations (2nd reading) presenting the hope of those who believed: they were destined for the “the new Jerusalem in God’s kingdom, where every tear will be wiped away and there will be no more mourning, death or pain.” Like theirs, our hope is rooted in God’s Word: ‘Behold, I make all things new.” But, making all things new is an on-going process requiring the response and participation of all who believe, you and me. It will never be the same: it is Jesus telling His followers at the Last Supper, and all of us: “I give you a new commandment, love one another. As I love you, you must love one another. This is how all will know you are My disciples.” It is in doing this, the only command from Jesus, that each one of us participates in the building of the kingdom. Doing so is how the kingdom becomes more and more who we are within-people who see God’s kingdom is one of justice and peace bringing harmony and unity, a kingdom not rooted in the sands of wealth, power and control. It is the realization and appreciation for understanding God’s justice is compassionate mercy and infinite, unconditional love which sets us free. When we embrace it we enter into the struggles against all forms of evil and the constant violence evil inflicts on the human family, especially poverty, misery, oppression, slavery, ignorance, fear and domination, the results of every rejection of human dignity worth, sacredness and equality. In this seemingly unending struggle the resolve to participate is rooted in knowing God’s love makes our contribution necessary and important. Weekly Offering
