What is Human Trafficking?

Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception, intending to exploit them for profit. The traffickers often use violence or fraudulent employment agencies and fake promises of education and job opportunities to trick and coerce their victims. Men, women, and children of all ages and backgrounds can become victims of this crime in every region of the world.

Important Facts

1 2 3

Estimates suggest that, internationally, only about .04% of survivors of human trafficking cases are identified, meaning that the vast majority of cases of human trafficking go undetected.

4

Globally, an estimated 71% of enslaved people are women and girls, while men and boys account for 29%.

Advocates report a growing trend of traffickers using online social media platforms to recruit and advertise targets of human trafficking.

In 2018, over half (51.6%) of the criminal human trafficking cases active in the US were sex trafficking cases involving only children.

Traffickers employ numerous tactics including isolation from loved ones, physical and emotional abuse, and economic threats. Traffickers can consist of men and women.

Learning & Networking

Mission Team 2 hosted a virtual discussion surrounding the Dressember documentary. This discusses the topic of how the nonprofit organization came and how their campaign works to end the exploitation of Human Trafficking.

In collaboration with Section 1, a trauma-informed instructional yoga session taught the attendees how to control and manage their body and mind through movement and breathing.

The Mission Team hosted two virtual viewings of TedTalks by Marke Dell and Yolanda

Shlabach, who were victims of Human Trafficking. The talks speak on how to converse with survivors and their path through recovery.

Mission Team members made a collaborative presentation on a topic surrounding various Human trafficking issues that were later presented to the rest of the team in the monthly meeting.

Service & Advocacy

Volunteering at Home Women's Center

Four mission team members volunteered for Hope Women's Center in November and helped them gift wrap books for children and pack food boxes with fresh groceries for families in the community. Hope Women's Center's mission is to engage, encourage, and equip women and teen girls facing any difficult life situation, including providing support for those who are survivors of human trafficking.

Service & Advocacy

Dressember Fundraiser

Mission Team 2 participated in Dressember for the first two weeks of December this year. Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to victims and survivors of human trafficking. In conjunction with this movement, we organized a fundraiser with the goal of $220.00. This fundraiser supports the Dressember foundation in the prevention, intervention, and survivor empowerment programs worldwide. During the fundraising period, we surpassed our initial goal, by raising $226.49. This was all thanks to the members and families of the NGSC community.
