Mr. Mount

FEB. 4TH DAY OF ACTION Hello everyone, Your Mount Students’ Union invites you to participate in the upcoming Day of Action on February 4th. The Day of Action will be a massive protest in the streets of downtown Halifax. We will be advocating for: · The reduction of tuition fees; ·

Converting student loans to grants (that you wouldn’t have to pay back);

·

To increase government funding to universities.

High tuition fees create barriers to education. We believe that education is a right and that it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their wealth. When we see barriers to education, we see a struggle for equality, a poor economy, and huge detriments to students and their families. Because of the soaring tuition, students are forced to take on more jobs, huge debt loads, and even more stress. Across Canada, we see Counselling Services, Disability Services, and other general support structures receive less funding, yet are being more and more relied on by students. We will be hosting several events to prepare for this event, and to get Mount student issues to the forefront of this protest. Material Making Parties + Erin Brockovich/V for Vendetta Screenings February 3rd (4:30pm – we run out of paint) Crow’s Nest – Rosaria Student Centre Grab your friends and come create your protest swag with a group of rad students. Decorate banners, placards, and other creative crafts for the protest all while enjoying some free food and drink with fellow students. Also, get in the activist spirit by watching Erin Brockovich (feat. Julia Roberts) – an unemployed single mother who sticks it to a corrupt power company. Facebook event page: www.tinyurl.com/Doa-MaterialMaking2 Pre-Rally and Day of Action February 4th (11:00am – 3:00pm) Meet outside Seton (main entrance) We will be having a pre-rally outside Seton to get everyone amped up for the day ahead! Along with lots of free coffee and muffins, the pre-rally will be feature talks from Student Union executive and several members of the Mount community about your role in dramatically empowering students.

Charter buses leave the Mount around 11:20am to bring everyone to Victoria Park, the starting point of the protest. We will meet with thousands of students from SMU, Dal, NSCAD, and Kings (to name a few) before making our way to Barrington/Spring Garden.
