NBA full of suprises in 2013 season

MSU Baseball “Game two was not pretty for the Mavericks, but they would secure a victory and walk out of the dome with at least one win on the night.” continued from 12 by any means for the Mavericks, but they would secure a victory and walk out of the Dome with at least one win for the night. Junior Jason Hoppe took the hill for MSU in game two and got in a groove early, going six strong innings for the Mavs, letting up four hits and striking out five. The fourth inning was be a wild one for the Mavericks, gaining their lone run and hit off of BSU pitcher Jaryd Marks. Marks started the inning by walking Mavericks leadoff man Parker Sullivan, and followed that with another walk to sophomore Connor McCallum. Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt with nobody out, beat the throw to first base, and registered MSU’s lone hit on the evening. Lindner then hit a towering, catchable foul ball into right field which would have likely scored Sullivan from third, when the BSU dugout screamed for second baseman Cody Jenkins to let it go, halting Sullivan at third but giving Lindner another chance to bring in a pair of runs. Lindner would ultimately fly out to right field, forcing a play at the plate as Sullivan just beat the throw from right and narrowly got under the tag from Beaver catcher Riley Hirsch to give MSU their final lead, 1-0. Senior Mahlon Zimmermann would come in to close in the seventh, going three up and three down to record his first save of the season. Jason Hoppe tallied his second win of the season in the victor. He has now begun the season without giving up a run in his first 11 innings

of work on the hill, which includes eight strikeouts and six hits during that span. Now comes a bit of a break for the Mavericks, as they do not play again until they head to Winter Ha-

ven, Fla. over spring break where they will play nine games in seven days, facing off against competition from all over during their week in the Sunshine State.

The aging San Antonio Spurs have the best record in the league, the Minnesota Timberwolves are back in the cellar of the Western Conference and Paul George is dazzling everyone out of Indiana, what more could you expect from the NBA?

One of the many great aspects of any sport, amateur or professional, is uncertainty. Whether it’s the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey team shocking the Soviet Union, or the Minnesota Twins going from the worst record in baseball in 1986, to a World Series title that very next year, to this year’s Lakers, filled with at least three, maybe even four Hall of Fame players, struggling to even make the playoffs. The 2012-13 NBA season has been filled with ups and downs, pleasant surprises, and shocking disappointments. The array of different stories that range from the beginning of the year to what’s happened in just the last week, make for some interesting banter. Odds are as the playoffs creep closer and closer, the storylines will continue to intensify. For now, we still have lots to look at.

Anthony was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player. After a while, he faded away and Kevin Durant took over the reins of what seemed to be his race to lose; that is, until LeBron James yet again entered the picture, took the lead, and will likely never look back. No player has ever had a year in terms of statistics that LeBron James is having right now. He is averaging 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while shooting 56 percent. No one has ever put up those scoring, rebounding and assist numbers, while still shooting over 55 percent. Only three guys have ever averaged at least 27-8-7 while shooting 50 percent, those players being Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan. Not bad company to be in. Some people think it’s Kevin Durant’s “turn” to win the award, but if LeBron James doesn’t come away with his third Maurice Podoloff Trophy in four years, there is something seriously wrong.
