Letter from the Teacher
As a final project for a unit about whose voices we do and do not hear in the news, I wanted to give my students the opportunity to take power over sharing the news that matters to them. We began this classroom magazine with a single guiding question; “What matters?� From there, this incredible group of students took charge of their own learning and developed a classroom magazine that showcases their unique voices. It is my hope that their hard work inspires other classrooms to find a shared purpose and create something similar that represents the issues that matter in their own learning communities. UFC PROFESSIONAL FIGHTERS
What is UFC? The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is an American mixed martial arts promotion company. It is the premier MMA promotion as well as the largest in the world, featuring most of it it the top-ranked fighters in the sport. Based in the United States, the UFC produces events worldwide that showcase ten weight divisions and abides by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The UFC has held over 300 events to date.
What is the UFC purpose? The first Ultimate Fighting Championship event was held on November 12, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. The purpose of the early Ultimate Fighting Championship competitions was to identify the 1 most effective martial art in a fight, with
minimal rules, between competitors of different fighting disciplines, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Sambo, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate , judo, and other styles. In subsequent competitions, fighters began adopting effective techniques from more than one discipline, which helped indirectly create an entirely separate style of fighting known as present-day mixed martial arts.
Which is the most effective martial art? The point of The Ultimate Fighting Championship was to determine which martial art was best of all. UFC 1 had eight talented fighters with skills that included boxing, kickboxing, kempo, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitzu and even sumo wrestling.
These eight men put it all on the line to represent their respective craft, but in the end, Brazilian Jiu Jitzu practitioner, Royce Gracie, proved that his takedowns and submission skills were too much for anybody in the field. And so, two things were born: the aura of Gracie Jiu Jitzu and the legend that is Royce Gracie.

My Favorite Player From Steelers My favorite player from the Steelers is Antonio Brown. He plays as a wide receiver. Antonio Brown is my favorite player because I like the way he runs all kinds of different routes. He started his NFL career in his senior year in college. He was picked by the Steelers in 2010 in round 6 pick 195. He has been in the Steelers for seven years. His 40-yd dash time is 4.48s, not bad timing for a wide receiver. This is his all time statistics and not counting 2016. His career touchdown is 38, receiving yards is 7,093, and he is averaging about 13.5 yards per game. His statistics are above average.
NFL 2016 Draft for Steelers For the Steelers, the 2016 NFL draft was very good. The first pick by the Steelers was cornerback Artie Burns from Miami. They picked a lot of defensive players. I also think their defense 1 needs some kind of boost and they got it from this draft.

Types of uber drivers
Okay, so I don’t know if you have ever experienced UBER rides but I am like a childhood friend with these UBER drivers. Lol! That was a good one! Alright! Let’s focus. So these UBER drivers are of different types and for people who don’t know what Uber is I’ll explain it to you guys first. Their website states “UBER is the smartest way to get around. One tap and a car comes directly to you. Your driver knows exactly where to go. And payment is completely cashless because they have your credit/debit information”.
1st type: the best kinds of drivers are the ones who stay silent; they don’t say anything other than “Hii! How are you?” 2nd type: As soon as I get into the car and in a minute the driver turns around asking “So how was your day?” I know this ride’s going to be nerveracking because now this UBER driver has started joining all these constellation stars to figure out my zodiac sign! It’s not like I don’t like socializing with people but sometimes you just want to sit back, chew those free gums, read magazines and relax.
3rd type: Had it ever happened to you when you get into a UBER car and it’s freezing? God knows why this driver is feeling so hot that your body temperature starts playing this game of goosebumps in that ice aged car. 4th type: Bad DJ, (yeah I’m weird that I count stuff like this). This driver plays songs of something lost in woods and I don’t even know what is he trying to find. I mean i could help you bruh! When you tell this driver to change the song, he’ll change the song but turn up the volume upto 10. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? I cannot even listen to what’s going on.
5th type: is this category of creepy drivers, they always try to flirt with you, exchange numbers and brag about their wealth.
6th type: This is the lost soul, the driver who doesn’t know where he’s going and what he’s doing. He’ll play pacman all over my location. Then there’s this absent minded driver. He’ll bump into people, hold up traffic and will still say it’s a beautiful sunset.
7th type: They think their second name is GPS. They feel like they know the whole area, current traffic, shortcuts and everything but after few minutes you find yourself stuck on rail tracks.
Then there’s this last category of old female drivers who are always over protective. They’ll make sure you have your seat belt on, you’re not uncomfortable or anything. So this was my list of all types of UBER drivers that I’ve experienced. Overall, UBER is a great application and a solid prove of improved modern technology.

Urgency of the Refugee Crisis in France It’s something that can’t be ignored. French authorities are worried.

“We have to find a solution to the problem. It has become dangerous for the refugees and our Police officers everyday,” says a young man in an interview. Everyday new people are coming illegally in the country and building what we called “Jungles” in the town of Calais, with the goal of traveling illegally into Great Britain by passing the borders illegally in the back of trucks. All these people stay in Calais, blocked there because they got caught trying to get in Great Britain in the back of trucks or because they don’t have anywhere else to go. They’re waiting for their papers, to start their lives in France and being in security far from their country where they’re in danger. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to get papers, and some of them are in these “jungles” a long time.
The major problem of this, is the violence that occurs between the police and the refugees. Sometimes, big fights happen in the middle of the road because some woman, man and kids are getting illegally into trucks. Some refugees are debating sometimes and don’t want to get down from the trucks so the French police have to force them to get down and sometimes it doesn’t go well 1

unfortunately. After the rise of Isis and terrorism, some people are leaving their country in emergency because they’re scared and they want to live in a safe country with their young kids. These poor people come in some countries where they don’t have any solutions either, but they have something that they don’t have in their original countries : Security.
Some associations show their support to refugees, and want to help them as much as they can. Refugees are human beings and should live in safe places as everyone else. Some other people said that some refugees were violent and were coming in our country to be violent and doing illegal stuff such as drug dealing, and that we should be more careful with who enters the country.
A lot of people are showing their support to the refugees, and actually do something for them and try to help them as much as they can. For example, the picture shows a website where you can donate to help. Apparently, welcoming refugees costs a lot of money for the government, and some countries are already in a bad situation considering money, so they should be careful to not “drown” themselves in a money situation. I personally think that welcoming refugees is a good thing, but we should be careful to don’t forgot our people who are homeless in our countries and help them too. We have to take care of our own countries too and our people. Some of them are dying too in the streets when it’s really cold outside and because they’re hungry. We have to help them too. Every person who are in the need deserve to be helped. The refugees need help, but homeless people in our streets do too. 2

A. Well, before I came here I thought they will all be nice with me and they were, but some of the students were like racist. They looked down on me as I am from different country but later, we all got pretty cool.

Q. Do you have any reasons why your students came to U.S.? A. Most of the students’ families come here for better jobs. Others come as they were forced to leave as refugees because of the war going on in their home country. Some already have a families here, so they come to stay with them.

District families report over 75 different home languages spoken. There is approximately 30% of the district population that is bilingual. There are many positive things about having people from different regions. You can learn about different languages, their culture and religions, behavior, and most delicious food. I’m glad that I study in the school that has so many different people. Honestly, I like different people, as they make me want to know about them and their country more. I feel like it’s interesting to know about others and the way they live and dress in their country.

Vans off the wall are really famous shoes because of skaters, snowboarders, and also bikers. Vans have been in the market for 50 years and during those 50 years Vans have not gone out of style. Vans are the number one shoes for skaters, they are also famous because of their classical shoes. Vans have not changed much in their stye of shoe since 1966.
Vans was founded in 1966 by brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren and their business partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia. The brand’s first store was located in Anaheim, California and by the late 1970s, it had opened 70 shops in the state and gained a loyal following of West Coast surfers and skaters.
Vans have stayed classical since 1966. Vans has not changed much in their shoes; they still produce the same shoes they made since 1966. The only difference is the logo on the shoe. The logo of the shoe might now be from a famous person or famous movie or just something really popular.

Van Doren and his brother created a unique company that manufactures canvas and rubber shoes, and then sells them directly to the people. Today Vans has over 415 shops around the world. This year in 2016, Vans celebrates 50 years in the making. To celebrate, Vans launched a series of films documenting its heritage and links to art, sport, fashion and music. At first it was only called Vans shoes, but the time it changed in 1976, Vans made the first Vans Off The Wall. Vans also has represented certain events like the X-games, snowboarding events. Vans has represented certain shows like the Simpsons and others. They did this by pitting their logos on the shoes. Vans are the best shoes for skating and also to wear if you go anywhere. Messi has a wonderful career, scoring many goals, winning many titles. He plays for FC Barcelona ( Spain ), which is one of the best clubs in the world. He is playing for Barcelona for eleven years, and had won the Ballon D’Or five times and made him the best player in history. He has more then five hundred games for Barcelona and he scored 464 goals. He played 348 games and he scored 312 goals. In Copa del Rey, he played 55 games and he scored 39 goals. In the Champions League, he played 106 games and scored 83. Messi was a huge part of Barcelona this year by having 23 assists in all competitions. A lot of people said that Messi had a horrible season scoring the lowest amount of goals in La Liga ( 26 ) since 2008, but don’t forget that he missed more then two months because from a knee injury and he still managed to score 26 goals and 16 assists, which is incredible. We can not talk about Messi if we don’t talk about Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo had a wonderful career also for Real Madrid and Manchester United, scoring a lot of goals and winning trophies. For Man Utd., he scored 118 goals in 292 apps which is pretty good. He is very thankful to Man Utd. When he was playing for his old club, he won his first Ballon d’Or in 2007. Having an incredible career at Man Utd, he came to Real Madrid in 2009. He is still playing for Madrid and he became the best player that Real Madrid ever had. Scoring goals, winning titles, he became a huge star for them. He won 3 Ballon D’Or, 3 Champions League titles and also 4 golden boots.

British Shorthair The British Shorthair has a crisp, plush cat that is dense and waterproof, over a compact, cobby body. It has a full chest, and medium to short thick legs. The Shorthair is a working cat, and it personifies this standard with power and strength. It is medium to large in size, with a well knit body and powerful muscles. The head is massive and round, with wide, round eyes set atop a short, thick neck. It might be described as a Bulldog of the feline world. Ears are broad and rounded, the whisker pads are full and round, giving the Shorthair a teddy bear appearance with an upturned mouth -giving the impression of a smile.

American Shorthair If you are a very calm person, this cat is right for you. The American Shorthair goes all the way back to the Mayflower. English colonists brought cats with them from England to help keep rats and mice on the ship under control. When the settlers arrived on New England shores, the cats joined them in their new home.
In the early 1900s, cats were imported to the U.S. from different countries and mixed with the first American cats. In an effort to save the original American cat, a group of fanciers chose a handful of cats showing the characteristics of the “native” cat and began breeding them selectively.
In 1906, the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) recognized the American Shorthair, which was called the Domestic Shorthair at the time. In 1966, named was changed to American Shorthair, and denotes a pure breed rather than a mixed breed cat.
American Shorthairs are known for their gentle expressions. They come in more than eighty different colors and patterns, including
calico, tabby and all white. Male American Shorthairs can weigh up to 15 pounds, while females can get up to 12 pounds at maturity. They are known for having long life spans, and can live to be 20 years old with good care.
The American Shorthair, our native shorthair breed, is one of the most adaptable breeds for any type of household; for a single person living alone, the American is an excellent companion; for a senior citizen the American is a calm, devoted pet; for a family with children, the good natured, playful American, known to be excellent with children, fits right in; for a busy household, the non-demanding American keeps itself entertained, ready for the time they have for relaxation. Apartment living suits them as well as a house. One of the natural breeds, the American Shorthair is a medium size cat, muscular with a firm, well-balanced body. They have easy care short, lustrous coat in a range of colors and patterns.
