! "&00#@&!,9*/!.)&!G)#$9! Dear Friends, It is my honor to address you for the first time as chair of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics Foundation. As a longtime Limestone resident and MSSM supporter, I know firsthand how important this institution is to the community and to the students whose lives it changes. The 2009-2010 school year was transformative for the Foundation. In addition to changing leadership and welcoming new members, we adopted a new strategic plan and hired a parttime staff person. We are energized and ready to expand our efforts to support the school and ensure that any child accepted into the program is able to attend and participate fully in the MSSM experience. On behalf of the MSSM Foundation and its beneficiaries, I would like to thank the many staff members, parents, alumni, and friends who contributed during the 2009-2010 school year. Your generosity is helping to ensure the continued success and long-term growth of this valued institution. Please join me in sustaining that momentum by making a charitable donation to the MSSM Foundation during the upcoming year. Best regards, Art Thompson Chair, MSSM Foundation

"&00#@&!,9*/!.)&!6(.$%@!HI&(2.$J&!=$9&(.*9! Dear Friends, Greetings from Limestone and MSSM! It's my pleasure to be serving as MSSM's Acting Executive Director for the 2010-2011 school year. For those of you who may not know, I am also Vice President for Academic Affairs at University of Maine at Presque Isle. Since beginning this dualappointment in August 2010, I've quickly seen how important the MSSM Foundation is to the school's long-term success. Contributions to the MSSM Foundation support activities, programs, investments, and student assistance that the school's traditional public funding sources simply cannot cover. From financial aid and student outings to software and lab equipment, your generosity helps to ensure that MSSM students receive the best experience possible. This report contains a few examples of how your private and corporate donations enhanced MSSM last year. I hope you'll enjoy reading them. I would like to offer a special welcome and thanks to Art Thompson for stepping into his new role as the Foundation's chair. Art's leadership and local presence are having a tremendous, positive impact of the Foundation and we are grateful for all of the time he volunteers to this cause. Sincerely,

Michael E. Sonntag, Ph.D. MSSM Acting Executive Director

! "''"!1*2%-#.$*%!#.!K*9L! During the 2009-2010 school year, donations to the MSSM Foundation supported a broad array of initiatives, from financial aid and student activities to technology and professional development. The Foundation does not publicize assistance given to individual students. Below are examples of the more visible ways in which the generosity of our donors helped to enhance the MSSM experience.

!7*B*.$(0!G+2B! A $5,000 grant from Time Warner Cable allowed the MSSM Robotics Club to compete in the 2nd Annual Maine VEX Robotics Competition hosted by the University of Maine Robotics Club. The grant allowed the club to purchase equipment with which to design, construct, and test robots during MSSM's two week J-Term. Following the competition, club members Lucy Wilcox of New Gloucester and Kristy Garcia of Rockland (right) attended the 2010 STEM for !"#$%&'()*+*,%(-*..#+(#$(/*0*'+"1(/'(%23#4#+5,'6(+3%('+*7%$+'( explained and demonstrated how their robots work and presented a poster detailing the evolution of their robots.

!K$%-!H%&9@C!1$&+-!>9$8! In April 2010, the entire MSSM student body visited the University of Maine's AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center. They toured the engineering facilities and learned about wind power from the center's director, Dr. Habib Dagher. The field trip followed the March Sustainability Themed Weekend, which featured a hands-on session on ocean wind turbine design. The MSSM Foundation helped to pay for both the trip and the themed weekend through unrestricted Annual Fund contributions.

M*2.)!$%!N*J&9%/&%.! Annual Fund contributions allowed fourteen MSSM students to attend the YMCA's 2010 Youth in Government event in Augusta (left). There they were honored as the Premier Delegation and senior Sam Putney of Biddeford received the Best Bill Award. Special recognition was given to Robert Costa of Machiasport for his role as Senate President and Heath Mathieson of Liberty for his role as Newspaper Editor.

O2B+$(!7&+#.$*%0!#%-!"#9L&.$%@! In 2009-2010, the MSSM Foundation made a significant contribution to the school's public relations and marketing budget. This continues the Foundation's support for a necessary area of school operations that has not been covered fully by the state appropriation. Expanding awareness of MSSM and its success aids fund raising efforts as well as the school's admissions.

! "''"!1*2%-#.$*%!7&(&$J&0!P3QD444!H%-*R/&%.!N9#%.! In late 2008, the MSSM Foundation received an endowment challenge grant from the Maine Community Foundation. If we could raise $25,000 for our endowment over two years, then they would match those contributions with another $25,000. We are pleased to report that we reached our goal on time, received the grant, and have increased MSSM's endowment by over $50,000. Many thanks to the Maine Community Foundation and its donors for creating this unprecedented opportunity. Many thanks to the scores of MSSM graduates, staff and faculty members, parents, board members, trustees, and friends who responded with such generosity. Securing this grant was truly a community effort. Special thanks to the MSSM Alumni Association, which made this grant the focus of their 2009-2010 fund raising efforts. They worked hard to spread the work among graduates, many of whom responded by making their first contribution to the Foundation. As MSSM continues to grow, these gifts will help to strengthen and stabilize its financial base.

?%!7&(*@%$.$*%! In December 2009, Jim Patterson stepped down as the chair of the Foundation after many years of service. Dr. Patterson was one of the visionary founders of MSSM and spent years advancing the idea of an innovative, residential magnet school in Northern Maine. After working tirelessly to garner statewide support for the new institution, he served as its first Executive Director, overseeing the initial hiring of staff and faculty, recruiting students, and guiding the school through its most politically challenging years. Dr. Patterson left MSSM to launch another innovative institution, the University of Maine's Hutchinson Center in Belfast. He continued to support MSSM from afar by serving on the Foundation's board, eventually becoming chair in 2006. Even now, in retirement, Dr. Patterson advocates on behalf of the school and promotes its well-being.

As a leader, friend, colleague, donor, and fierce advocate, Dr. Patterson has touched the lives of thousands of MSSM students, graduates, parents, and staff members over the course of nearly two decades. On behalf of them all, we offer him our deepest and most sincere thanks. !S&0.!K$0)&0!.*!T$/!O#..&90*%!,9*/!M*29!19$&%-0!*%!.)&!! "''"!1*2%-#.$*%!S*#9-!*,!=$9&(.*90! Arthur Thompson, Chair Limestone
