2014-2015 Report on Giving
Letter from the Head of School Dear Mount family, This report recognizes all of you who so generously supported The Mount during the 2014-15 school year. I am grateful to you for your gifts which give us the resources we need to make The Mount special. Let me take this opportunity to tell you how. First and foremost, we empower young women to take their place in the world as participants, not just attendees. We do it as an all-girls school because it is an environment where girls can thrive. We do not revise our curriculum to incorporate the latest fad in academia. Rather, we make sure that our students have a solid foundation; then we encourage them to go beyond. Our Advanced Placement courses in the sciences, math, English, social studies and the visual arts are an example. Is that working? Let the class of 2015 answer that with the nearly $13 million in scholarships they earned. But a Mount education does not occur only in the classroom. We want to develop each student’s individual gifts and talents in extracurriculars. This past year saw award-winning stage productions of Our Town and The Boyfriend and championship seasons for our golf and softball teams. Your contributions helped fund these and dozens of activities, including retreats and other spiritually enriching activities. We provide an atmosphere that encourages the creation of a true community. Friendships formed here last lifetimes, as you alumnae will attest to. Girls from vastly different socio-economic backgrounds and cultures come together at The Mount and live in a harmony that is an example to us all. Financial aid, 100% funded through your contributions, makes that possible. Being part of community carries a responsibility to others. Women who receive a Mount education take action to correct injustice and to care for those in need. This past year our students met with and heard from Maggie Doyne, a young woman named a CNN Hero for founding and running a home for orphaned Nepalese children. She was an inspiring role model, as our students conducted their own efforts assisting in local soup kitchens and other actions. You have made an investment in the future of all us, helping to empower the outstanding young women of The Mount. Letter From the Chair of the Board of Trustees Dear Supporters of Mount Saint Dominic Academy: On behalf of the Board of Trustees of MSDA, I would personally like to thank those listed in this year's report for their financial support and to those who have contributed in any way to the success of the Mount, we also thank you. The education of these extraordinary young women is the common goal of all who contribute to The Mount Fund and other fund-raising activities. This past year was the most successful ever for our annual fund, The Mount Fund, which provides the resources for faculty development, classroom technology and financial aid to deserving students. More than 450 donors contributed over $391,000. Along with our other fundraising, more than $561,000 was raised for the purpose of empowering our very special young women. You were part of that enormous effort. Thank you. Your gift is an investment in our future. If the past is any indication of what our graduates can accomplish, today's students will be making an even greater impact on this world. Alumnae from the Mount are not only currently studying at some of the best colleges and universities, but they can also be found pursuing highly successful careers in law, medicine, the arts, public service, the military, science and raising wonderful families. I am so proud to take my place among my sister alumnae. You should be proud also. Thanks to your support, there are many intelligent, dynamic and caring young women who are being empowered to go forth and make this world a better place. When you look at them and the alumnae who attended The Mount before them, you - like me - cannot help but be optimistic about the future. Mount Saint Dominic Academy, established by the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell, is a Catholic, college preparatory school for young women. Mother Catharine Society Where would The Mount be today if Mother Catharine Muth had not planned for the future? Mother Catharine was prioress of the Sisters of Saint Dominic in Jersey City during a tuberculosis outbreak in the late 1800’s. She had the foresight to move some of the sisters to a hilltop in Caldwell and to establish an educational institution, Mount Saint Dominic Academy. Mother Catharine wanted to ensure that the good works of the Sisters of Saint Dominic would continue long after she was called home to God. Your gifts ensure that all our young women receive a Mount education, built upon the four pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Mission. They learn to include a spiritual component to their life (Prayer). They receive a sound academic education, including a number of classes in science and math (Study). They learn to form a community, even though they come from a variety of ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds. They develop a bias toward action, recognizing what needs to be done and then organizing to make it happen (Mission).
