Dedication The book is dedicated to the students that thrived and conquered distance learning, especially our fifth-grade classes that are now moving onto middle school.
Forward This book is a celebration of our students during the 2019-2020 school year. When the fourth quarter began, our students were heading into uncharted territory and sailed through it with ease. The creativity, diversity, and drive of our students is evident from their poetry that was picked for this book as well as their efforts during distance learning. We are very proud to have such amazing students at our school that will change the world. The students that wrote these poems are thanked by using their initials. There are not initials under each poem because this book is meant to have a sense of community, that ‘we’ wrote these poems. We hope that this project inspired our students to write, not just for a state test or an assignment in class. Writing is so much more than a grade or an assessment. It is journaling, recording our thoughts and experiences so others in the future can look back on it and make changes in their life based on previous experiences. Introduction This writing project started out to celebrate our planet and encourage others to take care of their environment. While our world went into self-isolation, the planet began to thrive. Our students were able to witness the Earth healing when we were forced to take a break. This project has become so much more to us now. It represents a school year that had so many changes, ups and downs, and global events. This collection of over one hundred poems is what they would like to share with the world to remember this year.

A Bird’s Journey Resting warm in the night when at day to take flight Through the harshest of large storms through menacing thunder as it roars through dry desolate deserts No water, tired feathers Journey back home through sea back at home to a beautiful tree right where I am meant to be tired from the day’s feat

Athena Athena is a goddess One of wisdom and war She is extremely powerful She’s as strong as a boar! She hates Poseidon The Greek god of sea ‘Cause one-time long ago He made her see A nasty show So she defaced the girl That he was with And, unfortunately She was turned into an ugly witch! The girl’s name was Medusa And her story remains To teach a lesson To all who deface Anyone’s place So all should know To not go down the road Of Medusa and Poseidon Who knows what’s worse?!

Broadway On a New York street, A fancy theater, 500 seats, Performances that last forever Butterflies The wings that flutter They softly mutter They flow with the wind The light then dimmed Calendar The days marked off by one The pages fluttering away Month by month, day by day Flowers blooming in May Which start to sway away Candy The sweet taste of the dish I single bite is all I wish Happiness is all I feel The whole experience is all surreal 15

Feathers There is much more to a feather than simply being light from a bird’s plumage after taking flight When being used it makes you laugh from tickles but when you sneeze you’re definitely in a pickle See, feathers serve more purpose than simply floating down they make you giggle and sneeze all around

The Feel of Lightning The thunder is running, but lightning is cunning It will strike you here, while you hide in fear You can hear the rumbling, while your body is trembling You are so afraid, that you hide in the shade What you fear, is coming near Then once you feel it, you reveal it Thunder can be nice, it gives me a tingle & spice It gives me groove, so I can dance & move I learned something new‌ Even though lightning is big & blue It can be something delightful too So if I try something new, I can see nature’s wonders too. The Forest The forest is as green as grass It smells like trees and its delicacy It tastes like sap and lumberjacks It sounds like leaves breaking It feels great 54
The Jungle The jungle is like another version of Earth, But smaller It takes like the sweetest candy, Bursting with flavor, And looks like a labyrinth Of trees and animals. It makes me want to be Free among the trees.
